Am I able to refine a search using filters?

Hello,  I would like to find a way to focus my searching requests.  For example, I entered the term 'farm' in the let's make field.  My intention is to find instructables in relationship to real life farms.  What I end up hitting is mostly how to work farms in minecraft.  So I attempted to use the google like filter of "farm -minecraft" but that seems to focus on minecraft projects rather than skip them.  Does the search engine posses a way to help me get to the projects that I am most interested in reading about and not having to flip screen after screen of minecraft farms? Thanks.

Make it easier to vote on contests

Some of the contests get hundreds of entries, and if you want until the contest is closed to vote, it can be painful to vote fairly on them all. It is too time consuming to click on each one, to assess the quality of the guide. Part of the problem is that you can't see enough entries on one page. The second problem is that you can't look at the entry without clicking through, and then you have to back up to get to the contest entry page again. Is this something that's under review? I would like to see a redesign. One solution might be to reduce the photo size to include more pictures on one page, and also to show a preview of the Instructable when you hover over it.

Arduino code help

Hey guys, So Im by no means good at coding. I can work with electronics, but the coding part of arduino is beyond me. I normally work with libraries that others have already created.  Im just wondering, is there anyway someone could help me write an arduino sketch for a personal project? Im using a arduino nano and a strip of 22 ws2812b led strips seen in my last instructable; https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Bike-LED-Lights/ I worked around the neopixal library until I got the rainbow cycle effect seen here (Not my video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUL7x_0r-bA Im just wondering if its possible to make the rainbow cycle code run between 3 different colors such as red green and yellow or red white and blue. here is my current code #include #ifdef __AVR__   #include #endif #define PIN 6 // Parameter 1 = number of pixels in strip // Parameter 2 = Arduino pin number (most are valid) // Parameter 3 = pixel type flags, add together as needed: //   NEO_KHZ800  800 KHz bitstream (most NeoPixel products w/WS2812 LEDs) //   NEO_KHZ400  400 KHz (classic 'v1' (not v2) FLORA pixels, WS2811 drivers) //   NEO_GRB     Pixels are wired for GRB bitstream (most NeoPixel products) //   NEO_RGB     Pixels are wired for RGB bitstream (v1 FLORA pixels, not v2) //   NEO_RGBW    Pixels are wired for RGBW bitstream (NeoPixel RGBW products) Adafruit_NeoPixel strip = Adafruit_NeoPixel(PUT THE NUMBER OF LED's HERE, PIN, NEO_GRB + NEO_KHZ800); // IMPORTANT: To reduce NeoPixel burnout risk, add 1000 uF capacitor across // pixel power leads, add 300 - 500 Ohm resistor on first pixel's data input // and minimize distance between Arduino and first pixel.  Avoid connecting // on a live circuit...if you must, connect GND first. void setup() {   strip.begin();   strip.show(); // Initialize all pixels to 'off'   // Some example procedures showing how to display to the pixels: } void loop() {   rainbowCycle(20); } // Slightly different, this makes the rainbow equally distributed throughout void rainbowCycle(uint8_t wait) {   uint16_t i, j;   for(j=0; j<256*5; j++) { // 5 cycles of all colors on wheel     for(i=0; i< strip.numPixels(); i++) {       strip.setPixelColor(i, Wheel(((i * 256 / strip.numPixels()) + j) & 255));     }     strip.show();     delay(wait);   } } // Input a value 0 to 255 to get a color value. // The colours are a transition r - g - b - back to r. uint32_t Wheel(byte WheelPos) {   WheelPos = 255 - WheelPos;   if(WheelPos < 85) {     return strip.Color(255 - WheelPos * 3, 0, WheelPos * 3);   }   if(WheelPos < 170) {     WheelPos -= 85;     return strip.Color(0, WheelPos * 3, 255 - WheelPos * 3);   }   WheelPos -= 170;   return strip.Color(WheelPos * 3, 255 - WheelPos * 3, 0); } Please let me know or if you can help ill take any advice Thanks!

How not to write complaints

As I see comments complaining over certain aspects of projects often enough, here is why some of these quips are utterly futile in their nature and go unacknowledged by many. Here's one posted a few days ago: "It's confusing for people without a technical understanding." This comment was posted to an instructable with 17 steps and several dozens of photographs. Because there is no indication of what the problem is, this statement is all but meaningless. There is nothing on which to base a response with help tailored to the commenter because he has not explained his plight's origins. If you are going to make a complaint or ask a question, identify the relevant subject. That will grease the skids for any correspondence that follows. Without it, your bid for a chat is more complex needlessly.

Miniature arduino controlled smoke generator

I'm looking to build a Miniature arduino controlled smoke generator for a static model of a B-17 Flying Fortress (so it has to be quite small).  I'm going to add stepper motors for the engines and start them in sequence, have Wav files for the start up and running, lights etc but I'm also looking to create the gout of smoke that is generated at start up. Any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated, it has to be controllable so that it can be timed for each of the engines. I was looking at the something like the smoke generators on the model railroads but wasn't sure how they work. Thanks in advance.

Seeking feedback on a unique vacuum accessory that can hold a mini flashlight!

Hi there! I believe this is the best place for me to ask this question. I just wanted to get your feedback or opinion on this cleaning accessory we are currently developing, the “Flashlight-Holder Vacuum Cleaner Attachment”. This product is a first-of-its-kind vacuum cleaner accessory that holds a flashlight, to provide light directly at the point of use. Please see this 4 minute video to see what this accessory is all about: https://d2pq0u4uni88oo.cloudfront.ne...-h264_base.mp4 The accessory holds a flashlight, to provide a hands-free beam of light exactly where it is needed. As someone who is engaged with cleaning services/ housekeeping or homemaking, would you consider using this kind of accessory? Or would you stick to what you are using right now? Your feedback will be very much appreciated. If you want to know more about the product, just visit http://dupreehouse.com/ Thanks

Help: Opening/Cleaning a portable air conditioner

I don't think this is the right place for it but I'm desperate. I have a portable air conditioner (Whynter Arc-14s) and need to vacuum and remove mildew from the inside, especially the fan blades. Now, I did contact Whynter support (e-mail) and they were able to help me remove the screws with a PDF guide. This allowed me to remove the front. Unfortunately, the back case won't come off, even though I took out all screws I was directed to. They couldn't assist me anymore after that. Now I'm stuck, summer is ending and I never got to use it this year. So has anyone opened up a Whynter Arc-14s portable a/c?

Any thoughts about the licensing? I think I chose the wrong one for the rubber band gun I posted. I just noticed that the license I picked says that you can't use this Instructable commercially. I would prefer that people be able to make and sell the rubber band gun if they wish. Also, I am not concerned if someone does not attribute the design to me. It would be nice but not necessary. I did not make the design to receive accolades.

Stepper Motor as a 'normal' motor

Hi, I recntly took apart a hard drive and there is a 7200 rpm motor inside. Only problem is that it is a stepper motor and I don't have any equipment to drive stepper motors and buying stuff to do is err... cost prohobititve.  Would connecting a negitive wire to 2 of the terminals and positive(in sort of a crisscross pattern e.g. -+-+) to the other make it run like a regular motor? I just don't want to invest time  to solder it only to have it not work.

My random bullpup model

So Dr. Richy posted his CAR which drew a little inspiration from this weapon that I posted on Red's wall in hopes he just might be able to turn it into a firing weapon. However, as I suspected, that's just not an easy task and I didn't expect it to happen. So I'm gonna just throw this out there and show anyone that didn't see it. It's made to be convincing, it could probably be turned into a real firearm. It's a bullpup designed to take 5.56 NATO rounds. I designed it to be somewhat ergonomic and compact. It has the front grip from...I don't even know how long that I used on my UMP. It's pretty simple, reasonably comfortable, and lets you quickly attach any front grip or bipod you can come up with. The muzzle was made from a new concept for a rounded barrel that could be used as a real K'nex barrel. This can also take a very cruddy and simple silencer attachment (which is actually just my Master Sword handle that I never wanted to disassemble). Then I added a basic rail on top that allows it to take airsoft or real rail accessories. It's not perfect, but you can get the accessories to grip into the grooves. I added a fake charging handle that is located in a decent, but not optimal position. This flows into a cheek rest of sorts that's rather close to the back of the gun so it can accommodate the charging handle pin. Your head is kinda cramped against your shoulder, but your face itself is comfortable aiming. And the front sight is detachable if you were to add a rail sight. I'm thinking I'll probably make a new one tonight for fun. It'll be shorter to be similar in size to a PDR. However, I might (not a definite) give it exchangeable fake barrels based on this one that allows it to lock in with a single pin. Secondly, I'm going to change the front to include an integrated folding forehandle that will also be comfortable to hold folded. Or so I hope. I'm also going to move the charging handle forward and make the roof one and the same with the rail to slim it down ever so slightly. This will also move the cheek rest forward to a more accurate position like on Dr. Richy's. Finally, I hope to add some nifty features but I'm not sure at all on these. One would be a bolt lock which probably wouldn't be too hard. It'd basically be like the charging handle is a firing pin and the bolt release would be a trigger, just mounted differently on the gun. And then the harder one would be to make a magazine release near the handle like on a PDR instead of the current one I use that makes you have to "strip" the magazine. On a real gun, this would be a great feature for making reloads a lot faster.

Audio - headphones

My daughter runs a Pre-school and uses a small cd stereo setup. The output is a pair of mono jacks (R/L) for speakers. I am looking to build a distribution box for up to 6 headphones. Thinking of one input (from the speaker jacks using a 2 to 1 plug) The headphones are mono 1/4 so those jacks are readily available. I do not know what the output is of the stereo system is but I doubt it is much over 5 watts (if that). Will I need some sort of amplifier? any thoughts on switches/switching jacks if not all are being used. Thanks for listening. guitar 52

Arduino Coder Needed - Will Pay

Hello,      I am in serious need of some help with code for a Arduino Uno project! This would not be for free of course. Just let me know what would be fair. So if your in the mood to help a dummy out, drop me a line! Here's some background on the project The project is a prop for a Halloween haunted house/escape room. The idea is for 4 RFID readers to detect 4 objects (Maybe optical sensors are better here for triggering the audio?not sure). Once all 4 objects are placed on top of each reader, the adafruit Wave Shield produces a telephone ring sound effect (I will be providing the sound .wav files to the adafruit SD card). I would also need to have a the ability to push a button to stop the ringing and skip to the next audio file on the SD card of the Adafruit wave shield. Hope that all made sense :). Below are links to all the pieces of hardware I am using: 1. Arduino Uno - I think you know what this is 2. 4 x RC522 RFID Readers  - http://www.robotshop.com/en/mifare-rc522-module-rfid-reader.html?gclid=CK7tv9qO384CFYGEaQodg8sGkA 3. Adafruit Wave Shield - https://www.adafruit.com/product/94 4. Maybe Photoresistors for triggering instead - https://www.adafruit.com/product/161

Paracord braided horse halter

Hi, I have challenged myself to make a braided paracord halter and I need LOTS of help.  I found one online that I really like and would like to duplicate.  I purchased a book "How to Braid Quality Custom Tack", however the halters in this book are not quite what I want.  Hoping someone will be able to give me some pointers or tell me where to find the directions I need. The picture of the halter I have attached is what I want to make.  It appears to me that you would need to start with the nose band to make this work but none of the patterns I have found start that way. Help!!

Tennis Project Collaboration

I roughed out a design (reversed engineered from various pictures) a tennis ball rebounder for a co-worker but it doesn’t look like he has the interest to build it anymore.  It’s a nice piece of equipment for anyone that likes to play tennis since you can set it up in driveway or basement.  Here are a couple of examples: Video 1 Video 2 I would like to do an instructables collaboration on the project with someone that would find this useful.  I would tweak the design (overall size, hardware, etc.) with your inputs.  Your responsibilities: Buy the materials which I’m estimating at less than $100.  Note that purchased versions cost up to $500. Build it - requires only a saw and drill Take a few pictures of the build and final product. Help with the documentation if needed  In the end, it is your rebounder to enjoy.  See my past instrucables for examples of my work/documentation.

Vises, The Instructables' Newsletter, & Top 5's

This is a forum topic that I've been wanting to publish for the past week, but I wasn't able to because of a bug. 18 emails to service later, here I am: I recently published two Instructables: How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise, and Top 10 Vise Hacks!. After being featured in the newsletter, How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise got ~20K views, and Top 10 Vise Hacks. got ~50K views. Now that makes no sense (to me. Wouldn't someone that was interested in an Instructable about tips, tricks, and hacks for your vise wouldn't be interested in how to make a vise? 1.5X more? That makes no sense... (I would think that there would be a difference of 10-20%, but 200%?) Also, speaking of the newsletter, it would be awesome to receive an email at the end of the year, that shows the most viewed Instructables that were posted this year. This could be a nice feature... In my opinion, the thumbnail for How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise was taken on a white background and is really good, and the thumbnail for Top 10 Vise Hacks doesn't have text, and isn't very good. I think you'll agree with me on this... After the views from the newsletter had started to slow down to about 1000 every day, Top 10 Vise Hacks was featured again, in the "top 5 most viewed Instructables of the week" which has brought it to 98K views already. Does that mean that SO MANY people have missed it from the newsletter? That's also weird... Another thing is that my Instructable on How to Build a Wooden Drill-Press Vise has a fairly good thumbnail, and was put on the Homepage. However, my Instructable on How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise wasn't, while I think the thumbnail is WAAAY better.  What do you think? :)

Copy/Paste to Editor no longer works

I last published an Instructable the end of January.  That was my 28th.  I now want to publish another one but the capability to paste text copied from a document on my computer no longer works.  It flashes the text on the screen in the editor window but then disappears.  I write my Instructables using Microsoft Word 2007 with no fancy formatting.  I even tried copying and pasting plain text with the same results.  I am running Windows 10 and Internet Explorer 11.  The only difference in my setup and technique from January is an upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10.  I am not using the Edge browser. Oh, and just discovered that I have three drafts that I can't delete.  No amount of Google searching has provided an answer to that question either.  I guess I'll just have to quit sharing my expertise.

Clay Contest Criteria

I have a question about the Clay contest criteria....debating whether to do an instructable for a DIY downdraft kiln vent for under $50 (cf $450-600 to buy) that I built. I've actually been waiting for the clay contest before publishing, however the contest criteria says:  "For the purpose of this contest, any project that uses a moldable, malleable, clay-like product will be eligible." So question is, would a kiln vent be eligible? Previous contest criteria has been "all things" related to said topic, but this seems more narrow in scope. Obviously a kiln vent is not made with clay, but it certainly fits the pottery topic. What to the contest gurus say?

LEDs - Under-volt, over-amped?

My issue: Have multiple LED drivers, (high power LED instructable) and connected the wrong one. The LEDs are not dead. My LEDs are rated at 9-12v, 950mA and I have sets of 4 in series hooked up to a 36v power supply. The driver I used has a .3ohm resistor on it. so it's putting out ~1.3A The LEDs should have burned up. Since the driver eats up a little of the voltage, each LED is getting ~8.75v. Is this why they haven't burned up? Thanks!!

Compact bubble gun mechanism?

My 7yo was begging for a bubble gun, and I promised I'd 3d print him one.  To my surprise, there are very few 3d printable bubble machine designs around, and none that match what he wants.  (He wants it to have a handle and trigger like a handgun.)  So, I suppose I'll be designing one. . . (FYI - My parts bin has plenty of fans and motors and even small liquid pumps and I am competent at 3d design. ) My challenge is that the basic rotating disk method of wetting the bubble hoops is both too bulky for a handgun-style bubble shooter, and is highly spill-able. I see online there are numerous toy bubble guns that look like what I want and appear to be much less spill-able.  However, I can't figure out from the pictures how they work, beyond that there is a pump that sends bubble solution to above the hoop and a funnel to route the excess back into the container.  How does the bubble solution get swiped across the hoop reliably? (And, yes, I know it would be easier and cheaper to just buy one.  That's not the point.)

Thanks in advance ;) //*********************************** #include #define trigPin 6    //trigPin #define echoPin 7    //echoPin LiquidCrystal lcd(12,11,5,4,3,2); int tempPin = A1;   // the output pin of LM35 int fan = 10;       // the pin where fan is int led = 9;        // led pin int temp; int tempMin = 35;   // the temperature to start the fan int tempMax = 70;   // the maximum temperature when fan is at 100% int fanSpeed; int fanLCD; int duration, distance; int buzzer = LOW; void setup() {   Serial.begin (9600);        //Baud rate   pinMode (trigPin, OUTPUT);  //trig pin as output   pinMode (echoPin, INPUT);   //echo pin as input   pinMode (13, OUTPUT);       //Buzzer pin as output   pinMode(fan, OUTPUT);   pinMode(led, OUTPUT);   pinMode(tempPin, INPUT);   lcd.begin(16,2);   } void ultrasonic() {   digitalWrite (trigPin, HIGH);   delayMicroseconds (1000);   digitalWrite (trigPin, LOW);   duration = pulseIn (echoPin, HIGH);   distance = (duration/2) / 29.1;   if (distance > 30)   {     Serial.print(distance);     Serial.println(" cm");     digitalWrite (13, HIGH);   }   else   {     Serial.println (distance);     Serial.println ( "cm");     digitalWrite (13, LOW);   } } void heat() {   temp = readTemp();     // get the temperature   if(temp < tempMin) {   // if temp is lower than minimum temp     fanSpeed = 0;      // fan is not spinning     digitalWrite(fan, LOW);         }   if((temp >= tempMin) && (temp <= tempMax)) {  // if temperature is higher than minimum temp     fanSpeed = map(temp, tempMin, tempMax, 32, 255); // the actual speed of fan     fanLCD = map(temp, tempMin, tempMax, 0, 100);  // speed of fan to display on LCD     analogWrite(fan, fanSpeed);  // spin the fan at the fanSpeed speed   }   if(temp > tempMax) {        // if temp is higher than tempMax     digitalWrite(led, HIGH);  // turn on led   }   else {                    // else turn of led     digitalWrite(led, LOW);   }   lcd.print("TEMP: ");   lcd.print(temp);      // display the temperature   lcd.print("C ");   lcd.setCursor(0,1);   // move cursor to next line   lcd.print("FANS: ");   lcd.print(fanLCD);    // display the fan speed   lcd.print("%");   delay(200);   lcd.clear();   } float readTemp() {  // get the temperature and convert it to celsius   temp = analogRead(tempPin);   return temp * 0.48828125; } void loop() {    ultrasonic();   heat(); } //***********************************

Not receiving notifications when comments are made

Today I noticed that there were a few comments to my instructables that were made some time ago and I never knew existed.  In my settings I had made the choice to send me an email when comments are made so that I can respond in a timely manner. Looks like it is not happening.....can you help?  Thanks in advance.   V/R ElmarM

How fast can you spin your Golf Ball?

I played around with some balls placed into the airstream of a little blower. Everything light enough just "danced" in the air like being hold on invisible strings. But not so much the golf ball! You would expect those dimples are good for reducing air friction but do they also offer stability in some cases by making the ball spin? Check this video I recorded while playing - to me it looks like with a proper nozzle there is even more speed possible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=014QkXuTL0o How fast can you make it spin?

No intentions to rip off anyone's work! I am new to this and really want to play around with the style. I just don't get how the silk flowers are attached, though! Thanks in advance. Kindly, Danielle *Photo is from BeSomethingNew on Etsy

Removing duct tape residue

Does anybody know of an effective way to remove the residue left from gaffa tape that wont melt plastics or harm electrics? I recently got an old keyboard that covered with it. (there is a lot of the stuff)

garden hose spigot: fixing/replacing

I have a spigot like the one pictured. The bottom connection is a male 5/8 inch garden hose connection. It is leaking pretty badly around the handle/pretty much through it when opened. Any ideas on how to best fix it, or perhaps what to replace it with if replacement is a better idea, would be more than welcome. Thanks. Boris.

Laser Cutting Help!

Hello, just wondering if anyone knows how you can laser cut an engraved image (bitmap) which you have taken off the internet? I am using Coreldraw, Corellaser and Laserdrw and don't have much experience at all with it. Thank you.:)
