LEDs in resistance sensitive circuit

My question is relative to getting a LED to function correctly in a resistance sensitive circuit.  Here is the situation. 1. The Battery Warning Light in an automobile I am restoring currently uses an incandescent bulb.  2. Functionally, the light is on when the ignition is turned on, but goes off when the engine starts.  3. This works fine with the incandescent bulb, but not with a LED, even if I put the same incandescent bulb in the circuit (parallel). 4.With just the LED in the circuit, it never goes off.  This is because the circuit has about .5V leakage voltage through the device (which is a Lucas 3AW Warning Light Unit) when the engine is running (and correctly, 12V when just the ignition is on). 5. With both the LED and the incandescent in the circuit, the incandescent does not come on and the LED does not go off, both with ignition on and engine running. 6. I have also put a potentiometer in the circuit with just the LED and cranked it from 1 Ohm to 100K Ohms, with no effect. 7. Of course, an easy answer is to just use the incandescent, except that the dash is wired and complete and installed, and I prefer to get the LED to work.  Any thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Horizontal scroll bar issue

When arriving at a page such as https://www.instructables.com/tag/type-id/category-technology/ There's a horizontal scrollbar. To remove it, find this rule div#omni in your CSS files. Either: - Remove: border: 1px solid rgba(119,130,135,.4) - Add: box-sizing: border-box; Either one should fix your problem.

European Voluntary Service in Netherlands

European Voluntary Service (EVS) is an Erasmus+ program for young people (17-30 years old) who want to spend a long time living in a different country and with almost all the cost paid: apartment, wifi, transport, food... Bataviawerf (Lelystad, Netherlands) is a dockyard with special ambitions. Ships from the golden century which has been important in our maritime history, are reconstructed here. Our organisation is depending on the work of volunteers for some years already. A lot of foreign volunteers helped to build the ship “Batavia” and are now helping to build the new ship “Het water schip”. The Bataviawerf could not exist without the help of numerous volunteers which help in showing everybody the way of building ships in the 17th century. We are seeking for 3 new EVS with the next profile: Tasks Create technical drawings, finish the 3D Digital Model of the Batavia, create nice videos and photos about the Bataviawerf and handwork (rebuild some parts of the Batavia -mast, yards, etc.-, forge, wood work,...) Criteria Technical background with knowledge about SolidWorks, AutoCad and similar or experienced in graphic, digital and multimedia design (Adobe Premiere, InDesign, etc). Also creative, self-motivated and interested in shipbuilding and handwork. Procedure If you are interested and you think your profile is suitable for one of our tasks, send us your CV and a motivation letter to the email: evsbataviawerf@gmail.com More information We are seeking for 3 new European volunteers for the next periods: 1) From August 2016 to August 2017. 2) From September 2016 to September 2017. 3) From December 2016 to December 2017. IOS App?? explore Crash

Hate to beat a dead horse but, can we at least fix the IOS app to make it usable? If you don't know what I'm talking about download app and tap on explore. You only have to try it two or three times before you delete app. Seems to me many potential contributors to the DIY community will move on after discovering that such a great database is impossible to explore...wait where did it go? There it is...expl..whoops..screw it.

Tip31 Transistor alternatives

I teach middle school science, and I'm helping a small group of keen students work on DIY projects.  One of the students wants to try this: https://www.instructables.com/id/Music-LED-Light-Box/ It calls for a Tip31 Transistor, which is proving difficult to find, at least in Canada.  The comments section suggests at one point that any NPN transistor will do. Can anyone confirm this?  Or can you suggest more readily available alternatives? Thanks!

Pen + sprinkler = get out of school free!

I will not be as descriptive or dramatic in this story as I was in my last. Last year, someone in my class made a small elastic gun that shot pens and pencils. Someone, who shall remain nameless, was screwing around during LA class trying to get a pen stuck in the ceiling with it. Whats the one thing you hit if you aim at the cieling and miss? A sprinkler. Black, smelly fluid (I know, black? wtf?) sprayed out everywhere as everyone in class eight one was screaming. Within seconds, the school alarm system was activated, and the entire school (~1000 students) was evacuated. 1/4 of the school was flooded, as were 4 computers. (Nameless) did get caught and was suspended from school for ~1 week. We got the rest of the day off school. If you can hit a sprinkler with one of these weapons, and activate it, It's basically a good way to get out of school free. You must have tremendous aim though. Someone with knowledge in the field of sprinkler systems said that (nameless) was extremely lucky that he did not set off every sprinkler in the school, which probably would have gotten us out of school for a week. (and got him suspended for the rest of the year, if he were caught) remember, aim between the red part and the metal part.

Stats about downloaded files?

I have some files attached to my Ibles and wanted to know if there have been any downloads of the files. After all, with no feedback I thought I could see if people actually use it (or collect the files for fun). But either I am blind or there is nothing in the stats that would give me this info. Did I miss something or this just not implemented? Also: What the size limits for uploads/attachments and is there a way to restore them in case the got lost on the servers?

"Featured On Homepage" - I Have Several Questions...

First of all, I want to thank the staff member that clicked on that awesome button! Who doesn't love having their 'Ible get featured in the Homepage? But I have a couple questions: When my SpectrumLED Instructable got featured in the Newsletter, I got a 3-Month free PRO, And another 1 full year PRO. Now, When my LED Workshop Lighting 'Ible got featured, I got a free 1 full year PRO, But without the 3-Months. Why is this? Before you think I'm just greedy, I don't need these. I like giving away a free 3-Month PRO Membership to members that make my project and share pictures. I already have enough years of free PRO... ;) My second question is: Do all Instructables that get featured on the Homepage get featured in the Newsletter? And... My third: My Instructable was at the top right of the homepage, Meaning that it was the most recent one that got featured on the Homepage. It stayed like that for several hours, But then it got "covered" with 'Ibles that were featured before that on the Homepage. Aren't they supposed to move down to the bottom? About an hour after that, I refreshed it again, And it moved to a different place again. Are they supposed to be organized randomly like that?

Sugar Cane Juicer

Well I just came back from a vacation in Vietnam and I saw that there were these machines that squeezed the juice from sugar cane, creating a very tasty drink might I add. Well I looked up how much one of these machines would cost and I found out that they are particularly pricey and unaffordable to the average Joe. So my burning question is "How do you make a inexpensive sugar cane juicer?" P.S. On another topic, "How do you grow sugar cane?" would be a good follow up to my burniing question.

LDR Grid + Smartphone = ?

Hi, I've got an idea but I don't know what it can be used for, yet. Maybe you'll have some ideas for useful applications based on this concept. The idea is to make a grid of LDRs which fits the size of a smartphone/tablet screen, write some code which draws a similar grid on the screen (or just switch images of that grid) so that each LDR will be affected by the light (and color) provided by each cell from the screen.

CDROM stepper motor problem with movement

I have been having intermittent problems with my cdrom stepper motor. I had a four pin motor soldered to a bare copper wire. I used the pins not the little ribbon cable and I left the ribbon cable attached because I figured, as soon as I snip it off I would regret it later. The other end connects to a breadboard that is in line with the stepper input to the EasyDriver motor controller. I have been using GRBL controller on my PC and when I tested it the first time in a vertical position it would just wobble around, not moving up nor down. I thought the stepper motor was bad so I got another one. The second was wired the same way, 4-pins, and it worked in the vertical no problem. Then later, while working on the rest of my project the second cdrom motor that was working did that same wiggle without moving up or down. I realized that the solder connections were very close together and that two pins were electrically connected. I modified the wire to basically a homemade male to male jumper wire. The extra pin made the room I needed to unsolder the two pins. Once again the motor worked up and down with no wobble. I have done nothing to modify the cdrom stepper any further and went to test my motor today after a couple weeks hiatus and once again, wobble with no up nor down motion. At this point I am stumped. I have reason to believe that my solder skills are lacking and that my homemade jumper has broken internally inside my shrink tubing where I cannot immediately see it but If anyone else has had this problem and knows how to rectify it please let me know. I hope there is enough info here laying out my problem and that someone can lead me in the right direction. If it also helps, I have checked my pin out and I do not feel it is backwards or crossed. I checked the resistance between the four pins and the end of my "jumper" and is approximately, 40, 20, 40, 100 ohms for A-, A+, B-, B+, respectively. I am really not sure what these number would mean but my buddy told me to check the continuity from end to end.

wind turbine- I need wiring help

Hey guys,  I decided to make a vertical wind turbine out of materials I had laying around in the garage/shed.  I found everything I need; old bike, pvc/dryer exhaust pipe, old dryer motor.   I wanna make something along this concept.... https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/b6/c1/cd/b6c1cd7b76e82cef51fefdfa4f62bfcd.jpg the wind turbine would be chain driven from the sockets on the bike wheel.  I have the whole concept of the turbine drawn out and ready to go.  But when it comes to the wiring on the motor im stumped.  If someone could help me, that would be awesome! I found two motors, here are the links to them.   http://www.ebay.com/itm/Maytag-Washer-Motor-Clutch-6-2016660-16-S68PXGCN-1002-201807-12002353-/181947664075 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genaral-electric-DRYER-MOTOR-5KH26JJ064S-/281776789034

PLANS Dragon Tiger Chu Ko Nu Repeating Crossbow

This is a set of complete plans for a Dragon or Tiger "Chu ko nu." To be purchased on Etsy as a downloadable set of files: https://www.etsy.com/listing/272230762/dragon-or-tiger-chu-ko-nu-plans?ga_order=most_relevant&ga;_search_type=all&ga;_view_type=gallery&ga;_search_query=repeating crossbow&ref;=sr_gallery_1    It is an ancient Chinese mechanical repeating crossbow. The plans include the printable dragon and tiger patterns that you glue on to your wood pieces, then cut out and wood-burn the beautiful pattern. Then you can paint or stain it how you want to. It is a crossbow and a sculpture, like a display woodworking item that is also fun to shoot! Assembly instructions here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCGHTDqgWHU I have been fascinated by this type of crossbow since my early teen years and have been building and experimenting with them for more than 10 years. This set of plans displays my most current and refined iteration. It is very fun to make this and see your own fine work come together, then see and feel the mechanism function smoothly. Very satisfying. To build this you will need some small hardwood boards as will be listed on the cover page of the plans (this wood is available at hardware stores ex: Lowes). You will also need white glue, two wood screws, and one small nail. The plans are delivered to you as a digital download in a zip file with all the pages in it. Tools needed include: Saw (prefer a band saw with scrolling blade, but a thin bladed hand saw can work), Sand paper, Round wood file, Clamps for gluing, Drill with selection of bits, Wood burning tool.

Aduino Bluetooth code problem!

I am building a Morse Code machine with bluetooth functuonality.  It is in the early stages at the moment but I have hit a problem. My code uses a button to input Morse code which is displayed on an LCD and flashes an LED on pin 5, but also incorporates a bluetooth HC05 which controls an LED on pin 13. Seperately, they work fine but I wanted to merge the two sketches. I have succeeded but for one small problem. When pressing the LED 'ON' button on my android app, the LED only comes on after the Morse code button has been pressed. And it works the same way for the LED 'OFF' function on the app. Press it, then press the Morse code button and the LED switches off again. This repeats. I cannot figure out why this button is controlling the Bluetooth LED command signal. I have changed baud rates of the bluetooth but to no joy. I have attached my code. Can anyone help me solve this problem?!?

House Boat (Suggestions/ideas/brainstorming/etc. I want everyone's opinion)

Okay! Summer project time. I've been collecting acid barrels from my dad's work. Each 55 gallon, plastic drum, is 35 inches high and 24 inches in diameter (90 x 60cm) can hold 460 pounds in fresh water. At the moment, I have 9 barrels. I get another every month, so by mid-springtime, I will have 12 barrels. My question to you, is how would you go about making a house boat, or floating platform. I don't have a specific use for it, just a place to get away with friends or by myself. I would like some kind of canopy. I live about 25 minutes away from the river I plan to set my boat on. A friend of mine has a decent sized trailer, and that is what we would haul it on. My other question is, would I have to have my house boat licensed, or 'labeled' to be legal? Thanks in advance, some sketches would be appreciated. :D

batery charging

Having had to buy a dedicated charger for some 18650 cells (at my wife's insistence) I took an interest in these cells for the first time and their smaller cousins the 123a. At with maximum capacities I've come across so far of 3700mAh and 2000mAh respectivley that's twice the capacity of the battery in my smart phone and 2.5 times the capacity of the one in my basic bar phone. The smart phone width would accommodate 3 of the 18650 cells (6 days without charging at my rate of use) and the bar phone possibly 4 of the 123a's (70 hours talk time or 10 months on standby). Yes this would mean a custom made back, but there is at least one instructable on molding a GRP/ carbon phone back adjusting it to take extra cells and maybe ports just needs modeling clay. I suppose I could just carry a power bank, but why if the phone can be its own power bank? Removing the guts of a power bank and building a new phone back to accommodate them may be the simplest answer to this but, my questions are:- A) I've got old mobiles laying around could I use their charging circuits to charge these standard Li-ion cells? Assuming that is a yes that would mean a long charge every 6 days/ 10 months. I gather there are problems associated with parallel charging/ discharging of Li-ion cells and over discharging so, B) Any advice on doing this other than don't? On the assumption that's a don't or even if its not this strikes me as a safer possibility. C) Could a micro controller be configured to discharge one cell to its limit then switch to the next full cell. D) Could a micro controller be configured to charge one cell to capacity then look for the next under capacity cell and charge that. E) if so could it do both at the same time? If A is possible and the rest not then a multi position switch is  probably the answer.

The way it would work is that when an object gets close to the sensor for example 2 inches, then the servo goes from 0 degrees to 135 degrees, then wait 5 seconds and go back to original position ( 0 degrees). i was thinking of using loop. something like . loop if  sensor is close to 2 inch then servo goes from 0 to 135 degrees then delay 5 seconds and go back from 135 to 0 degrees else do nothing end if end loop

Slot Car Lap Counter using Hall Effect Sensor & Arduino

Hi guys, For a university project I am using a hall effect sensor to count laps of a slot car. I am hoping to count the laps and output the number to a 7 segment LED display. However I am very new to coding and arduinos themselves. I was wondering if anyone had any similar projects or knows of any code I could use or any ideas people may have for a potential solution. Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Electro magnetic Gloves

So, we've seen magnetic gloves..but we don't always want the magnets. So, instead of taking off the glove, why not make an electro magnetic glove? Do you guys like the idea? Should I pursue it? Make an instructable on it?

Amazing Visit in Pier 9 (2015 Summer)

Dear Community,        !!Spoiler Alert!!         Last summer, my family took a vacation to the California America!! My parents only planned 2 day in SF!! It is such an vibrant city! i wish i had stayed longer! In our brief stay we did went to ILM's lobby and Pier 9 under my strong request!! A super friendly Community manager helped us to sign up between our DM.          We began in the lobby, a gentleman Jacob was our guide! He took us through a round of self introduction, the tour size was 9. And i was the only instructable member! After learning about the exhibit in the lobby and what role does pier 9 serve for Autodesk's development, we headed to the little showroom next to the kitchen. I saw projects i read about in real life! The feeling was incredible. My father was picked to try out the cocktail mixer from Manhattan project. We also learn from example hoe artist's work give feedback to software design and the cycle goes on and on, resulting in better iteration every time.        We then are instruct to wear lab goggles since it is time to see the CNC milling room. Luckily, there were only 2 machine in used. We got open up and see the inside of the machines with its extensive variety of drill head. We also get to hear from those who are currently using  the machines! Pass this door, is the wood and metal work room. Behold the Killer view(see attached pics). All members of the tour asked interesting questions. I was wondering if the metal chips and bit can be recycled in house, turn out they don't. We didn't spent much time there, since there is nobody working there. But hey, who would mind so decent carpenter metal-smith experience, making game related armor and weapons.       I was taking picture with my Canon DSLR. At this moment, the battery flated out despite being fully charged the night before. I continued with my Phone Camera. Which turns out that my Camera was shorted and formatted the sd card. Luckily recovered some pics later.        Up stairs we went, to the 3D print farm!! There is also the laser cutter. It is the busiest room in the pier. People on computers, setting up the printers, washing the water soluble support away. I am so overwhelm by the fillament, powder, even paper based printer which eat A4 and pumps 3d models out!! A massive amount of 3d print works are on a shelf. There are multicoolor print, a sabertooth skull, Human ears. A continuous track that i was told that it was printed that way without any assemble, which was made possible by the water soluble support! It was also one of my favorite room as a 3d artist. How i could quickly prototype parts and toys!      Afterwards, it is the skywalk of over the top of the milling room. there is this fun over head track with handles. I certainly took a spin!! haha that is what i mean by tech meets fun!!      Across the skywalk, we saw the Arduino and electronics room next to the internship area, where host XYZen-Garden and mini clear King Kong!! Many more!! The sewing room with so sewing machine mounted to the wall! With every equipment and machine i see, i can see myself using it to create interesting PROJECTS!! My brain was constantly bouncing into storming mode!! Unlocking new possibility of creation! New present idea i can surprise my Girlfriend with!!      The tour ends with the restaurant grade kitchen! Which was brief, since we were running out of time. We asked so many quality questions along the tour and time is almost up. It was the most interesting workshop i have ever been to!! As a scientist-artist hybrid, I really wanna work there some how!! To put my ideas to the test!      Enough about my visit, there are so many things i didnt wrote about though. Have you been there? Any fun ideas about HQ? Please tell me!! draft and  Craft, Mchau2 Who am I? I am joined instructables at March 2013, I published my first instructable about a year later!! It was a paper ironman that i built without peps. Being picked as featured the first time was my honor. I am from HK, apart from Digital art, I focus on prop making and D.I.Y. Toys. I tried my best every time. Until next time, Happy instructabling.
