Vaulted Dome Aquaponics Greenhouse Design

What do you think about this greenhouse design? It is for an aquaponics system. 192 sq ft so no permit is required in many areas. 9ft tall by 16ft wide, vaulted dome with center support for strong snow holding ability (snow should mostly slide off the vaulted dome anyway). Do you think people would want this in their yard if I offered to sell it to them?

ceiling fan wind turbine

I am in the middle of building a ceiling fan generator/wind turbine.  I know that the electric current produced is AC (I think it's 3 phase...it has 3 wires coming out of the fan). I do not know electricity that well, and am learning as I go... I would like to use the wind turbine to drive a small garden water fountain pump that is 120 volts.  What do I need electrically to complete building this wind turbine? Does anybody have any suggestions on resources on how to connect such a device electrically?  (Do i need a diode, rectifier, ???)  Does the voltage produced by spinning the generator have to equal the volts required by the device ( small water pump)?  Thank you for any and all help as I'm trying to learn and hopefully complete this wind turbine by summer.

maintain initial and end position stepper motor without energy loss

Hi all, In a project of automated vertically folding curtain I have the problem that whatever the position of my curtain (8 kg) is, the motor is always drawing current. Let's say the curtain stays for 8 hours in the same position, then during these 8 hours the motor is wasting lots of energy. Is there a method/mechanical system which can be used to make sure the motor only uses energy ("works") if the position of the curtain has to change? Thanks in advance

Is it possible to use old cassette tape's and/or floppy disk's "film" to make circuit boards?

Is the magnetic film inside these old media conductive enough to replace the copper, and if so, would it be feasible to glue strips of tape/disk onto some plastic or cardboard and then attach (?melting/soldering?) electronic components to it?

Can anyone help me?

stewart platform with firgelli linear actuator using arduino codeing help!

I am building a stewart platform as part of a larger assembly to accuratly position an object in all six degrees (transition in x,y,z) and rotation about each of these (pitch, yaw, roll). I plan to use an arduino board and 6 firgelli linear actuators. Any help on how to go about programming this would be a great help, or if anyone knows of any open source code so that I do not have to do the reverse kinematics as Im not strong enough in math to do so. ive attached a pic screenshot of my design. thanks

Need "Timer" help right away. Automotive 12VDC

I need a 12 vdc timer that will pass thru 12v once activated, BUT only for about 1 to 1.5 seconds. Then it has to stop passing the 12v even though it is still powered (12v is the still being supplied). Once the supply voltage is removed, it needs to reset so that it can pass thru again the next time supply voltage is introduced. I can solder & read. That is about my limit of electrical circuits. Would an IC 555 timer be able to do this somehow? Thanks STEVE.

Is it good idea to replace laptop's fan by fan of cooler pad ?

There are nasty fan inside of my laptop. The fan is loud and sound is nasty and works always (its such model of laptop), so I want to remove bottom of the laptop's corpus and may be top of the cooling pad and use the pad instead of internal cooler (which I will plug out). I have AMD. I think that it's may work because: fan inside laptop blows at radiator (which is on another end of copper pipe), not right at place where processors located. And I want big fan that will blow right at those part of cooling system where processors located. I'm not gonna remove copper pipe, just plug out default fan and use pad's instead so that it will blow at cooling system from the bottom. I'm gonna use pad with 220-250 mm fan. What do you think ?

Explain me how to make an "Electromagnet Solenoid" more powerfull

I bought something like this off Ebay: http://g02.a.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1S5xyLpXXXXcGXXXXq6xXFXXX1/New-Fashion-DC-font-b-12V-b-font-2A-Pull-Type-Linear-font-b-Solenoid-b.jpg Turns out it wasnt as powerfull as i need it to be but it has the right amount of travel and is nearly perfect in size... Notice that the body where the coils are is fairly short. What if i made my own? But MUCH longer body, (theres plenty of room in my aplication LENGTH-wise) will it get more powerfull? Can i make it more powerfull by adding more coil? Turns out i have plenty of coil like the one used in my solenoid, i have plastic pipe similar size and i can CNC the central "plunger" rather easy as well. Or make it different shape etc... The solenoid i have has a metal body, does that affect how strong the solenoid is?  The coils are wrapped around a plastic tube, the plunger is rather loose inside it and the tube could be thinner. Will thicker plunger and thinner tube improve the power? Im using a 11.1V lipo battery, something you can find in RC-cars. Increasing voltage/amps IS NOT AN OPTION.  So, in simplicity, if i make a solenoid like mine, but longer, can it pull greater load than the original or do i need to do something else as well? The actual aplication itself in simplicity is the solenoid pulling certain object back around ~10mm AGAINST a spring, not very powerfull spring might i add. It pulls the object back, then lets go. It will be controlled via a circuit later but right now just a battery and nut-job holding a red button. I just need a solenoid powerfull enough to overcome the spring. The object needs some force  to return to its position so putting in a smaller spring is not an option eighter.

Determining speech rate from audio

Hi, my name's Oli and I am a speech therapist - aka speech pathologist in US. I am looking for a way (e.g. an app) that can determine how fast someone is speaking, in realtime. This kind of biofeedback would be really useful for many people with communication disorders where learning to speak slower can help a lot (e.g. stuttering, dysarthria). I can also see it being useful for teaching public speaking to students etc.  Does anyone know of anything out there (hardware or app) that can do this? Or where I might find someone I could pay to develop this app?  Many thanks, Oli

Arduino & Servo problem - servo overshooting/inaccurate

Hello Forum! So I'm planning to build a robotic arm and I'm testing servos for direct response to input values in degrees, in order to later build a code for forward and inverse kinematics. My problem is as follows: I've written some code to pass numbers to the motor from the keyboard. But my motor seems to be horribly innacurate and... well when I tell it to set itself at angle 90, it goes to like 110 or so. And in order to go from 0 to 180, I must pass 165 instead, because the servo goes beyond a half-full angle. Is it the motors fault or there should be some kind of additional feedback loop somewhere? With reactions like those, I could hardly build an RC car, not mentioning a robot. I add the code and I have filmed issue.     vid 2: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_oVtjTRcVtwTnRtQWJxd1NJSEk/view?usp=sharing     vid 1: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_oVtjTRcVtwdWg3ek80MUxLaEk/view?usp=sharing I count on you guys! Thanks in advance! #include Servo myservo; int Input(0); void setup() {   myservo.attach(9);   myservo.write(180);   Serial.begin(9600);   Serial.println("system initialized");   Serial.println("input configuration value: "); } void loop() {   while (1)     {         while (Serial.available())         {           Input = atoi(Serial.readStringUntil('\n').c_str());             if(!(Input<0 || Input>180))             {                myservo.write(Input);                delay(15);                  Serial.println(Input);                Serial.println("input configuration value: ");             }             else             {                Serial.print(Input);                Serial.println("?");                Serial.println("y u do dis?");                        }         }         break;     }   delay(15);

Arduino intruder alarm modification

We have a professionally installed burglar alarm system that dials out (over a dedicated landline) to a monitoring station when an intrusion is detected.  I'd like to modify it to send us an SMS (via the mobile phone network) and/or email (via wi-fi on a different landline) as well, just in case the phone line is cut, and to make sure we get notified immediately - the monitoring station tries to call on the landline first, then it calls our keyholders and the police, which all takes time.  If I'm 5 minutes away and the alarm is triggered, I'd like to know straight away so I can rush home. The alarm company have quoted a huge sum to make this change, because an updated control control panel would be needed to deal with the texting/emailing.  I can't go cutting into their system or it will invalidate the maintenance contract, so I need to pick up when the alarm is triggered without any physical connection.  Short of remotely detecting a current in the cable to the siren (a 12V DC signal, so how would I detect that?) it occurs to me that using Arduino to listen for the siren might be the best bet.  But I'm an Arduino beginner and I have no idea whether it would be better/easier to detect a noise over a certain threshold - the siren is very loud, but the noise from the adjacent road can be pretty loud too - or to try and detect the particular sound frequency of the siren.  All suggestions gratefully received.

Batteries

Hi, I'm building a mini BB-8 unit for a project and going to make many more for a club. My biggest problem I'm encountering now is the battery needed to power it. The entire circuit draws around 500mAh and runs  on 3-5V. I don't think a 9V battery is enough to power it or even a AA battery no matter how many i put on it. The online guides that I found uses 18650 batteries either salvaged or bought. However, from where I come its very expensive to buy this batteries and it the charger cost even more. So I was thinking of buying this cheap 2400mAh powerbank that is sold commonly here. It outputs 5 volts and can be charged by USB. This powerbank cost about the same price of a 9V battery but only have life span of about 2 months which is good enough in my opinion. My main question is are there any other alternatives to power this circuit at a cheap price and is it possible to use a powerbank to power this circuit? Tq for any help and suggestions.

I don't have a welder so i can't weld the frames together. I'd like to get some 3-way connectors so i can connect a vertical piece and two lateral pieces to make something like this: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61w7DLvf8PL._SL1000_.jpg or even something like this: http://www.garden-products.co.uk/resources/images/23569_huge.jpg i also would like to have something like this swivel connector to use for the opening top window portion: http://cdn3.volusion.com/6vf93.6qdpf/v/vspfiles/photos/8940171567-2.jpg I can't seem to find any square tube couplers/connectors anywhere on the web (except for some that are in the UK) that are less than $5-$10 each. Has anyone else had a similar need, or know of a solution? if i made the drawings in ketchup, could someone reading this post 3-D print them for me to test/prototype??? thanks, Mac

Horror Stories and Poems

Hey, everybody! I decided to submit a forum for scary stories and poems. Please post something scary, but nothing longer than a short story. I may add more scary things to this forum (in the comments), so you might want to check back on this every once in a while. To start, here's a poem I came up with. Please enjoy. Horror Work 1 He'll follow and chase, Slowly driving you nuts. Steal your mind from your brain Till you're only a husk.   You'll get sicker and sicker; It grows worse with the years. Then finally the man In the dark suit appears.   His garb is the blackest. His skin is quite white. The tendrils wrap 'round, You can't put up a fight.   He draws you close in, And begins with his work. As he removes you from life, You shake and you jerk. And then he is done, This thing with no face, And takes with him your body To some strange unknown place.

Windows 10 Mail

Recently I've been having an issue with the instructables news letter in the windows 10 mail application.  The links in the body of the news letter don't all work.  The larger featured links and the contest links allow me to click through tot he intructables site.  The smaller individual projects don't do anything. It's almost like there is no link associated with them.  This issue seems to be limited to the windows 10 mail application. If I open the e-mails on my android tablet, or in the MSN web mail application I can click through all of the links.   I don't have any problems with any other messages in the windows 10 mail application.  This is a recent development for the last 4 or 5 news letters. I used to be able to click through all of the links.  It could have something to do with an update to the app but why do only some of the links work? Has any one else had issues with windows 10 mail and instructables? Thanks Frank

Banner/rollover ads with uncontrolled sound and auto start

Why are you allowing ads with sound? Perhaps you should have your ad agency go here http://www.langoor.com/ethics-in-internet-selling-and-advertising/ and learn some ethics. There are ad placement firms who adhere to guidelines that help to maximize a user's experience rather than irritating the crap out of them. They seem to be doing pretty well.  Reducing a user's experience may generate you and you ad service some short term revenue, but it will ultimately reduce the user's willingness to buy the product of the offending advertiser, and will drive eyeballs off of your site.  I clicked on the "First Aid Kit for Hostile Environments" 'ible in my Mail app. My browser opened, as usual, and opened my instructable page. Then the music started. Thinking that I might have lingered over something too long, I closed the tab, went back to the mail, and clicked again. Same story. This happened three different times. ALL of the ads in the top banner did this. Idunno what the first one was, but the second one was for some Republican politician, and the third was for Mercury (the car, not the element).  I have not resorted to ad-blocking software because I believe in your site and want you guys to get paid for all your hard work. (That may soon change, though.) I haven't bought a pro membership because I don't publish anything or spend gobs of time here, and I've been a member so long that you gandfathered in most of the pro benefits for me. I'm relatively casual and limited in my use. Can you help a brother out and stop these types of ads, or are you gonna tell me to just suck it up because I'm a freeloader non-pro member?

Just wondering about what you actually get in a Pro Membership.

I was doing some poking around the site and found this page: https://www.instructables.com/account/give it talks about a few things that I haven't heard of or noticed since being pro for a while. These include: WYSIWYG Rich Text Editor? I did not notice the editor change at all when upgrading to a pro membership. Is this talking about being able to access and edit the HTML of an instructable? Author Intro - I am guessing this is different than the author bio, so I am not sure... Private Instructables - I have never seen an option to make an instructable private. --- After typing the above out, I logged out of my account and went to the signup page here: https://www.instructables.com/account/gopro and it seems the author intro and the WYSIWYG rich text editor seems to have disappeared however the private instructables feature is still there. If it has any meaning, I didn't pay for pro, I am using one my free 1 year pro memberships for getting a hompage feature.

Big Band Music Stands

I am the leader of a 17 Piece Big Band. Just like Glenn Miller or Harry James, I need to find a way to make some inexpensive but deco looking music stands. In the old days, they used to make them in all types, sizes and styles. Today, they have one kind. I would like to find a way to make some myself that can fold up and be transported fairly easily. If you have an idea of how to do this, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to email me if you have questions. The stand should be in two parts, the base and the shelf. The shelf should sit on the base. The shelf should also have a lip for the music to sit on without sliding off. The total height of the back of the stand should be 36". The height of the front of the stand, where the music sits, should be approx 29". The width of the top portion, the part that holds the music, should be 22". The lip should be 3 to 31/2 inches. The base will vary depending on style and shape. I look forward to anyone who thinks they have a way to make these. They need to be strong enough not to blow away in wind, yet easy to fold and carry. After all, I will be moving 17 of them each time I perform. As far as the style, well, the more art deco looking the better. If I could have anything I wanted without the worry of cost, I would choose stands that looked like the front of a car from the 1930's and 40's. It would look as though it had a grill in front along with the large round lights, perhaps a cap on the radiator, large wide fenders and whitewall looking tires on the side. Now, that is just my if I could have anything idea. reality says a simple square or perhaps v shaped stand. Solid colored, perhaps made from corrugated plastic. Could someone post an 'ible on making a prop of Emile's kukri from Halo: Reach?

Look at the title. A prop, preferably realistic, specs, blah blah blah.  "I'm ready! How 'bout you!"

Trouble downloading .stl files

I'm trying to download the .stl files for a couple of Instructables projects. But when I click on the links all I get is a page of garbled text. This doesn't happen all the time, but probably as often as not. Any ideas what the problem could be... and how to get around it?
