Instructable Crisis! Need Part!

I’ve been working on my instructable project since the begging of December and I have successfully completed 99% of it and 80% of the instructable write-up. When I reassembled my laptop I discovered that I was missing a keyboard key! If anyone has a regular sized letter or number key for the IBM ThinkPad model please contact me. I will donate some cash via paypal and include your name as an honorable mention in my instructable! Thanks!

Ultrasound Cleaning

For maintenance purposes, I would like to construct an ultrasound cleaning tank. Preferably an encapsulated ultrasound transducer and generator that could be used in an old solvent cleaning tank which now should not be used. From reading a little about the subject, its application would find a wide use as a clean and environmentally friendly solution in many industrial and domestic applications. Is it feasable and cost effective to build a generator and an encapsulated transducer, and are there any websites to go to to find out more?

Instructables Internship - Day 4

Alo Again,Well, this morning I didn't have the opportunity to burn my PB sandwich, not only because it was a PB&J; sandwich, but because the oven was filled with semi-burnt roasted tomatoes/garlic.Anyhow, Today I did some more outreach for the new Launch It! Contest and... drumroll please.... Billy and I shipped all of the remaining Laser Cutter Contest Winners' prizes! Woo Hoo! Other than that, the morning was pretty chill. I'm getting used to the much more relaxed setting here at Instructables. At all of my other internships I've had, everything was always so fast-paced, tense, and ridiculously demanding. At Instructables, everyone's just Chill. Everyone enjoys what they're doing. It's awesome. Also, I downloaded the Instructables MySQL dumpfile from Rachel, and I'm in the process of getting it back into MySQL. Eventually, I'm going to try and make some cool new statistic features for you guys!Billy and I tested out some LEDs and my ultra-thin/flexible solar panels, which are hella awesome. The specs say that they get 3V @ 22 mA max in the sunlight, but yesterday, I got that in the shade. In the sunlight?: 4.19V!After that, Jason, Billy, Noah and I checked out the Water Jet in Instructables' machine shop. Billy had to cut some stuff for a project of his, but watching the machine "do its thing" was really cool. There's so much awesome stuff here, I still can't believe it.Noah, Jason, and I then picked out some stuff that was going to get thrown out to use in Proj. X, and we ordered the Surgical Tubing, too! Then, Jason, Mike (Works for Potenco), and I went to the beach to check out the kite boarders, and fly the trainer kite. (Eventually, we'll get to kite board, too!)Alright, I think that I'm actually going to go get started on Proj. X now...I've included some pictures that I've taken throughout the day.Cheers,-MuffinatorP.S. I came up with an awesome badge idea, and I'll draw it up today on the computer. I'll post it by tonight, so make sure you tell me if you like it or not!

Maker Faire -- I gotta write this down before I forget

Okay, I realized this awhile ago, and its soooo cool, and I keep forgetting to tell people.I don't know if this was intentional, or not, but anyway. If you know French, you'll appreciate "Maker Faire", because faire can* mean "to make".Maker to make! I like the ring ;-)*Normally, its translated "to do", but it can also be translated this way... even though its barely used like this...

Internships at Instructables

Instructables needs interns, starting as soon as September! We're looking for smart, interesting people who can write well, are computer literate (sysadmin or coding skills are a definite plus, but not absolutely necessary), and are excited about sharing their knowledge with others. You'd do some site maintenance, community outreach, image manipulation, and some of the odds and ends necessary to make Instructables go. You'll also spend a few hours each week working on projects for your own Instructables, building things, taking pictures, and learning to use all of our fun tools! We'll pay you, too.You need to be creative, self-motivated, and learn quickly - things move fast in a start-up. We're particularly interested in people who are already involved with the site - a good set of well-written Instructables speaks louder than a long resume. If you're new to the site, show us something awesome that you've personally created. We want to know what you can do!Instructables is located in Alameda, CA (SF East Bay) with Squid Labs. Please send a resume, cover letter, and any other useful information to internships at instructables (dot com).

My cell is dead??

Well apparently my mother dropped my cellphone, now when you turn it on, the screen lights up, but it's blank, it vibrates when I turn it on because it was on vibrate before (startup sound). But it won't do anything else, I tried changing the ringer, hitting buttons, and it didn't make any sounds. Display cable popped out? Any ideas? -Punk

I think its kind of silly that people ask if they should make and instructable on X topic, just because no one is interested now, that doesn't mean people wont join in the future and see it. Plus Its still nice to learn something new. All in favor say "CHYA MAN, FER SURE" All against me say "STFU N00B, U HAZ NO SKILZ" All With no opinion say "........"

CFL

Who else uses CFL ( Compact fluorecent Lightbulb) I my self replaced all my rooms light with them, so 4 bulbs in total. They sell them at Sams club, 8 CFL units that replace 60 watt bulbs for about $10. Instead of using 60 watts they only use 13, also they do not get as hot making your room cooler in the wee hours of the morning. Im not sure if they sell them for the smaller bulbs like the skinny ones ceiling fan, because thats the kind of bulbs we have on our wall. I decided not to use that light for now. Most of all the light bulbs in our house are fluorecent, except the bathrooms, a few lights we use rarely and the 3 different intensity bulbs. Who else uses CFL and if you don't, do you want to switch?

Three Sided Truth

Global Consciousness Project – Long Term ExperimentI've been watching the GCP for over 4 years. I would like to create a permanent visual installation based on acquired data from the EGG database. The installation will be a tetrahedron, displaying past, present, and the "so-called" probable data. No explanation of what the display portrays. Mysterious as it will be, time and historical data will stir subconscious minds to recognize patterns. I believe this is the perfect device that will develop questions within closed minds and thus in time, answers.Read up on GCP here: Princeton GCPI have a physical design in mind for the installation. I would like to lead the creative task force for creating such a device. I'm wondering if I can find people here that would be interested in helping with the internal electrical and mechanical engineering that will be needed to operate the device. Serious minds needed only. This is a long-term project possibly taking several months to a year to complete. Funding will be provided once the preliminary concept is thoroughly defined. I would like to see that these devices are scattered across the globe and placed in highly visible areas. The domain name ThreeSidedTruth.com has been registered for this project. I hope to find some interested minds.threesidedtruth@gmail.com~ Demannu

Some php trouble with Dreamweaver

I'm giving my sister a hand with her pharmacy website for the university she goes to. And we got a link on the main page: Pharmacy main page . The link is for the phrosh (frosh with a p due to it being "pharmacy" har har, I know). If you look on the phrosh page itself: Phrosh information . The thing is that it's supposed to have the same grey tile as the main page, and on my sister's computer (she sent me a screenshot) she's got the background on there, but you can't actually see it online.. Any ideas guys? Thanks.

"You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete."-Buckminster FullerThis is such a great quote- that's what we always strive to do. Everyone who makes, builds, or creates should probably adopt this as their motto, because such paradigm shifts are the only real way to change the world. a few LED questions

I have been modding my ps2, It's been painted a window mod, and I'm thinking about adding a flip top. but for my next mod I'm going to install 2 yellow LEDs, to light up the window mod, so far I have 3 places I can wire them to, directly to the mother board which is12v of power, on the fan power supply which is around 7v, or the usb which I read was 5v, the LEDs are 2.1v and I have 2 of them. Which area is the best to hook them to, and is their any way I could do this without using a resistor, radio shack is closed, and I would like to finish this tonight, so the only way I could get a resistor would be to steal one from some other random electronic thing I have laying around. also (just making sure) if LEDs are wired in series, will the voltage be halved between the 2, if so then the 5 volt usb, will be at 2.5v when it's split, will this work or is a resistor still needed?

I highly reccomend

I just hooked up an outlet that I've had in my wall since I've re-dry walled my room, and it's by itself on a single wire, I just hooked it up to a breaker isolated from the rest of them on my panel, and have JUST my stereo plugged into it. All of a sudden my distortion problems I was having at near full volume are gone. I highly recommend running your stereo on a seperete outlet for you audio freaks out there!

A couple Questions about Meths, Alcohol, Oil, and Phosphorus

Ok, so a few of these questions may be really simple, but I have very little experience in these categories. 1) I'm working on a small camp stove that apparently is supposed to run on meths. I don't have access to meths and cannot buy any. Will Rubbing Alcohol work as a substitute? The plans for the stove seem to say that the vapors are what are on fire; it doesn't soak up through a cotton wick. 2) Will Canola oil vaporize so I could use it for the stove mentioned in question 1? 3) Phosphorus is a key ingredient in glow/light sticks. I saw a tutorial (which, by the way, would make a good Instructable) that showed how to obtain it from strike-anywhere matches and use it to make a custom glowstick. Again, I don't have any strike-anywhere matches, and I can't seem to find anywhere near me that sells them, so: Is there any other any household items that contains phosphorus that I could extract? 4) Is aluminum the cheapest metal, as in scrap metal or non-shape-specific pieces? Edit: 5) I have 70% rubbing (Isopropyl) alcohol. Is there anyway to purify it to around 90%? Thanks!

I'm stuck between a rock and a voice coil.

I know I think I've posted a question like this before. I have a new sub, it's a car subwoofer origionaly (200 watt max (not rms)). So far it's running off the internal amplifier that came out of my old/blow sub (it was rated for around 100 watts). And I have it ported out the side. I had to do some work on the dust cap, it was torn and the torn peice was flapping and making a lot of noise, so I put nail polish enamel on it, a few coats and seems to have worked, but now on the odd beat it sounds like one of the wires going to the voice coil are loose or it's rubbing on something because it makes almost a crackle noise. I figure if it was rubbing, it would make that noise on every singe beat, but it doesn't always. Is there a chance some of the enamel dripped down into the thing the voice coil sits in and it's rubbing somehow? Thanks for any ideas guys!

Back USB Ports Not Recognizing USB Drive

I recently (2 hours ago) made a case for USB drive because the case "broke" off. Anyway, my main USB ports on the front are on the bottom, with a stiff port cover over them. This makes it virtually impossible to use my USB drive now, as I cannot fit it in the tight space. So I want to use one of my 4 ports on the back. My problem is that when I plug the USB drive in, it just will not recognize it. I tried it it in my mouse port, keyboard port, everything. I tried it with another USB drive to make sure I just didn't ruin my first one; it wouldn't recognize it either. Maybe I'm missing something, or being ignorant, but I can't seem to figure out why it won't recognize it, and what can be done about it. Is there some menu like in the Control Panel (though I checked) that enables the ports, or what? I really to have to go case-less. Thanks! Edit - I'm running Windows XP Home.

timer-control of PC?

I'm trying to find a simple way to turn on my PC multiple times each day. I use the BIOS to turn it on now to record radio streams. I'd like something external to the PC, and something I could use to set several On Times each day. I don't know where to start. Should I attempt adding a relay to parallel the PC's power switch and then activate the relay? Should I attempt to build Rube Goldberg mechanism to mechanically activate PC's power switch? Wake-On-Lan doesn't seem to be the answer as how would I reliably send signal while I sleep? Even if you don't know of something specific, I'd be interested in where to look or approaches to investigate. Thanks, Scott

Inline out door amplifier

Okay i posted a while back about a project that I was converting my cd boom box into a mp3 back pack but after tranfering the it into another case it is still to big. I did wire the speaker though to a 305mm phone jack and found that if I pluged them straight ot my ipod that it gave sound, so what i need to do id buil a mini inline amp that runs on batteries so that it can boost the signal to make it louder for the speakers. Any Ideas?

Using Tungsten to Ignite Gas?

Alright, so Tungsten (which you may or may not know, is my favorite element) is combustible when current passes through it while it is exposed to oxygen. Could I place a bit of tungsten I scavenged from a lightbulb in a small pool of gas (or alcohol) while running 9 volts through, and get a reaction? Would having the whole bit of tungsten under the gas work, or would I need a piece above the gas also? I'm not looking to blow things up, just trying to do a bit more "dangerous experiments" before school starts. Thanks all!

New Knex Car 2

I know how to make a car that has two mini block trigger gun on the top that shoot off while driving on its own. With the use of a non strechy string. Lets say you have about 16 in. of string. And you put the two guns in the back of your car.You can wrap one end of the string to the block trigger gun's trigger(that sounds wierd). and the other end of the string to the back rod that has the back wheels. When it starts to go the string will begin to wrap around the back rod until all the string has been used. The string begins to get tight. For the car to go any further its gotta pull down on that string, so it pulls it down and the guns fire. DISAVANTAGES: 1. Right after it fires the car cant travel any further. 2. Probobly a pain in the butt to reset. 3. Not sure if it fires that far. 4. I havnt even finished it yet, so im not sure if it even works. ADVANTAGES: 1. There hasnt been any thing like this posted before. 2. It can have up to like a lot of guns. Thank you for reading this forum. I hope you understand. I dont have any pics for 2 reasons: 1. Im on vacation. 2. Its not finished yet. If I have any mispellings please tell me and I will fix them.
