Author stats and some other fixes

The author stats are back and are updated daily. See how many people have read your Instructable today, this month, and in total. Look for the stats in the upper left of your Instructables. With the author stats working again, you can sort the Instructables by pageviews. This can give you a sense of the popularity of various projects. Among other small fixes, we've found and removed the main culprit in the SQL deadlock issue. I haven't seen one in a few days, so we're cautiously declaring success. If you try to post a comment or save a step of an Instructable and get an SQL deadlock, send me an email. More fun stuff and fixes are on the way. Thanks for sharing your awesome projects and being patient while we grow.

Instructables and Squid Labs have moved!

Instructables and Squid Labs have moved! We finally ran out of space in our Emeryville warehouse. During November, there were literally people sitting on the ground working on their laptops because we didn't have enough desks, space for desks, or even chairs to sit in. We're now located in a secret location somewhere on an island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay with plenty of space and spectacular views. Since that free barge on Craigslist was taken before we could get there, I guess it's not much of a secret location considering there are only two possible spots left.Check out our new digs at the old the Alameda Naval base control tower. Yes, we are actually in the control tower building. There's three guns in the front, plenty of parking for school buses and free boats, and it's tough to beat the view from my office. New Years' Resolutions

Well, with my New Years' resolutions plastered on the Makeblog it looks like I'll have to work twice as hard to make sure I keep them. Here they are:Create more order. I find that once you have order, maintaining it isn't that hard. Apply this in practice to my garage.Learn a new language. Probably will be Ruby; Spanish will come next if I can reach a comfortable level with Ruby.Respond to or otherwise deal with every piece of email sent to me within 1 week or as soon as possible. Maintain an inbox that fits comfortably on one screen without scrolling.Say "good morning" with a smile, and mean it -- start each of my personal interactions out on a positive note every day.Try to have either a lower mass or lower volume of possessions by the end of the year. Get rid of things I don't use and probably will never use; don't buy anything that might fit this description. I need help with building a LED flashlight

I have been building this 9volt LED flashlight but I used this LED resistor calculator and it came up with a diffrent resistor then was noted in the instructable, I bought these two leds at radio shack and a 150-Ohm 1/2 watt 5% tolerance resistor (Brown Green Brown Gold). The LED lights light up but they are not bright like a flashlight and can only be seen in the dark if you put your hand up close. Im wondering where I went wrong? This is my first time working with LEDs, Maybe the radioshack LED's are just crappy? Or do you think I got the wrong resistor? Thanks,Nick

Portable USB Power HELP!!!!!!!

I'm currently working on a project for my PSP, I work long hours away from power sources to recharge my PSP. So I'm trying to build a portable USB power device which I can recharge it with.I've hacked the solar panels from two old garden lights, they had 2 AA rechargeable batteries in each and no over charge protection in the circuit.I plan on mounting the solar panels on the outside of the PSP case and the batteries inside it. I've mashed (really I have no idea of the theory behind electronics) this project up from the following people.....https://www.instructables.com/id/E8XCQO72IQETVPJYZL/?ALLSTEPShttps://www.instructables.com/id/E1QBI60DAJEQZJHW8Y/?ALLSTEPSMy problem is I seem to be getting 6 volts instead of 5 volts coming out of the regulator, like I said I'm a noob in electronics and any suggestions would great.https://static2.instructables.com/pub/FHE/TCUY/FHETCUYQBNEV2ZE6SC.medium.jpghttps://static2.instructables.com/pub/FEY/JNGP/FEYJNGP5GXEV2ZE6SX.medium.jpgI hope this worked OK it's my first post.

Happy Old Year!

2007 is fine and dandy, but what about all the cool stuff that happened here in the past year? A couple thousand projects have gone up on the site in 2006. So which ones still stand out as your favorites? Or who are some of your favorite people? Here are a few that still rock my socks:Universal Nut Sheller is a great effort at open-sourcing help to the rest of the world. The LED Throwie Rat is vile and gross and I could never make one myself, but damn if it doesn't still make me laugh whenever I see it or read the comments.I have one cat and can use another so maybe learning to deliver kittens would be a good idea.

Amps and Speaker Sizes

I read that regardless of the size of a speaker connected to an MP3 or something, the sound output should remain the same. I assume this was incorrect because using large computer speakers seems to disprove this. Is this because the speakers have more surface area and generate more sound? So will using large speakers at max volume drain more energy than small earbuds at max on the same music player?

Help - DIY Digital Picture Frame

I was finishing up a digital picture frame for my mom for Xmas, and decided to try to solder up some buttons to the on-circuit ones, but, unfortunately, the soldered wires didn't hold, and pulled some of the printed pattern off. Now the rubber button works at less than 25% efficiency. Any way to get this working better would be appreciated, thanks.

Ship of Theseus - Philosophy of Identity

This past saturday there was a show on TV about the advancements in the field of prosthetics and human augmentation. I only watched less than half of it - but the timing was interesting. I came across an article about the Ship of Theseus (from Greek Legend) and have been reading quite a bit about "identity" and similar topics. This is philosophy - so there's really no right answer, but I have found it very interesting to think about and thought I'd share and see what others think. The gist of the story: Say we were to preserve Theseus' ship. As parts deteriorated and rotted away, we replace them with new (better/stronger) parts. Eventually, we replace each part with a new one. The question now is - Is it still the same ship? I'm willing to bet most of you will say yes.Now lets say that instead of replacing the ships components with new ones - we take all of the parts from the warehouse (where the parts are being stored) and reconstruct the ship from these new/better parts. Which ship has the "identity" of Theseus' ship? This is an interesting question because I'm again willing to bet that the "first" ship mentioned is your answer. But why? The parts would have gone to the "first" ship if not into the "second" ship. Why should this be different?Third Case:We take Theseus' ship and we tear it completely down in dry dock. In its place, we reconstruct using new parts. Is it still Theseus' ship? Now lets look at a digital device - my laptop for instance. Let us say that I have an "identical" machine (spec wise) and I cut and paste each file from this hard disk to the "new" machine. Does this "new" machine take the "identity" of the "old?" Can we say this "new" laptop (ship) is in fact Theseus' laptop? Talking with my colleagues - their answer (unanimously) was no - it is not the same.So here is where I get to the human side of things... Biological process have our bodies continuously replicating cells. In about a year, roughly 90% of the cells in your body will die. But no worries - they are continuously replaced with new ones. So, does that mean we are a different person compared to 12 months ago (I've read this question from several sources)? How about amputees? Today, prosthetic limbs can allow them to do what many of us choose not to do - run marathons. Are they any less of what they were before? <-- I know that sounds "wrong" - put put "political correctness" aside (but by no means am I putting down the situation of an amputee).Again, I'm willing to bet many will say yes - we're the same person. One argument is that our memories make our "identity." Fair enough. Now lets entertain the future. We now have the technology to save your memories digitally. We can digitize the human brain preserving its intelligence and thinking ability. Just entertain this idea for a few minutes. So if my brain (and its memories) are now digital and I copy it to another vessel. Is it still me? Do "I" still have the same identity? I'd like to think yes, but what was your answer about copying a laptop's memory (was it no - they are not the same)? Why should my digitized memories be any different than that of a laptop's digitized memory? At this point, my colleagues were floored. They figured out where I was going a few sentences before I said it. That's what makes the topic so interesting (in my opinion). If anyone has ever heard of HAL-5 - you already know what a feat it is. HAL-5 (yes, that's a play off of a space odyssey) is a human exoskeleton designed to assist those whom otherwise would be unable to walk for long periods of time. The user can lift heavy weights (80kg - say a dishwasher) among other helpful tasks. How does it know to move? Sensors on the skin detect electrical impulses in the brain that tell the muscle to react. Those signals are processed and turned into mechanical motion. All of this happens before the muscles have time to move. That is, the machine is moving before you even do.So if we replace our bodies and even our nervous system with mechanical devices - what makes us the same person? AND, are we the same person if we can simply copy ourselves to a new body?So last point - and it's not even my own. One of my colleagues brought this to the table today (literally at the lunch table) :P We were talking about the advancements and the potential/reality of human augmentation. Then he says something that makes complete sense to me. He said that we are at the point where our brain is evolving at a rate faster than our human bodies are. Just give yourself a minute to contemplate and wrap your head around the potential of that statement. To a degree - we have already done this (just not internally). Why else would we fly in a plane or drive a car? Well, I for one sure can't fly or run at 70+mph.1. I apologize for the length.2. I'm curious of your thoughts -- if you have another aspect of this, please do post.3. Remember there is no "correct" answer, this is just philosophy.4. There will always be more question than answers on this subject (at least I think so).HAL-5: http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/29/hal-5-robotic-suit-ready-for-mass-production/HAL-5 (mountain climb): http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/08/hal-robot-suit-almost-summits-with-quadriplegic-man-in-tow/

URGENT Need Hard Drive Converter Recommendation SATA --> IDE

My parent's laptop took a crap on them. I'm 60% sure it is hardware related (well, not the HD that is).Unfortunately, they never backed up their photos and our family trip to Mexico is on there (the photos :P). What really sucks (kinda) is that the HD is SATA. It sucks because I don't have a SATA enclosure (but I do have an IDE).So do I go with a SATA to USB2 converterSATA to USB2 converter -- or a SATA to IDE converterSATA to IDE converter? This is urgent because I need to determine if its the HD or some other component so that it can be sent in for warranty repairs. Crossing fingers that its some sort of hardware.

Inflatable Fabrics

Out of curiosity - does anyone know what kind of fabric is used for inflatable structures... like inflatable kites? At the same time -- how is it sewn to hold pressure? I'm curious because earlier I was thinking why inflatable tents (for say: camping) are not too common. I mean, it seems like a good idea. No poles and such to worry about -- just inflate and go. Any thoughts?

12v 1.8w solar panel to charge AA 1.2v NiMh batteries

A 12v 1.8w solar panel is on sale for $15. its specs are: # Includes quick-connect hardware: connecting wire, DC clips, 12 V socket plug and barrel plug, mounting hardware/accessories # Built-in reverse current protection; won't deplete the power-supply system so can i use this to charge AA batteries? if so how many, 2,4,6,8,10?. i would want to keep it simple so i would just wire my battery holders to the panel if possible.

60 Second Time delay for photo cell LED's

Ok here is my dilemma. I have created hallway lighting with leds using the same setup as the blue bawls photo cell lights Blue Bawls . so what i need now is a way to delay the "on" time of the leds for 60 seconds after i break the beam. The trigger is a laser pointed at the photocell so when i break the beam the leds turn on. its currently running on 7.5V dc. Any suggestions or schematics are greatly appreciated .
