How to change 12v outlet from always on to turn on and off with ignition

I have a 94 gmc sonoma sle 4.3L V6 and I wanted to make the outlets turn on and off with the ignition but I don't know how to do it exactly. I have 3 outlets which are always hot (have power), and I would like to be able to at least make them all turn on and off with the ignition. But it would be nice if I could choose which individual outlets I want to have on all the time and which ones I want to turn on and off with the ignition, this would be done with either a switch of some sort or have the ability to move the respective fuse over as if it were a jumper.

How do I convert an Electromagnetic brake or lock?

Hi Everyone, I've been searching for a small (20 to 30mm Dia) disc shaped EM lock for a project I'm working on but can't find any. This type of lock's function, where when the electrical power is turned on the magnet activates, attracting a pin or plate, is what I need it to do but I can't find them small and flat enough. I then found some 24V EM brakes for a "Duplicator" (copy machine?) on Ebay where the size may be ok but if they were flatter it would be better. From what I understand these work the opposite way. The brake pad is normally engaged ("locked") to the hub by a spring, then when electrical power is turned on, the brake pad separates from the hub allowing it to rotate. Is this correct? Would it be possible to convert the brake into a lock merely by reversing the wiring or would I need to reverse the direction of the winding? Would that work to then attract a plate when it is turned on? Also, how much could I reduce the voltage and have it still attract a metal plate with a decent strength - say from 1/4" away? Thanks for you help! :)

Kitchen: under cabinet lights wire to range hood light

I just removed some halogen puck size under the cabinet lights in our kitchen.  They worked but required to plugged in. Unsightly and I lost an outlet in a high demand spot.  I guess I could start putting holes in the wall and attempt to wire it to the outlet but the damn things don't have an on off switch just plug them in and they are on.  Stupid (they predate my living there).  I did find some nice LED battery powered units that work fabulously for ME.  My wife on the other hand turns them on and then walks off.  Fresh batteries in the morning and dead batteries at night.  Fortunately the one we use the most is rechareable. Here's what I'd like to do but I'm rubbish with electricity and lighting so need someone smarter to tell me how. I want to put LED lights under the cabinets for additional countertop lighting.  I'd like to have them wired into the light in the range hood and controlled by the switch that controls the light inside the hood.  Turn on the hood range light and the LED lights come on too.  It seems simple to me but many things have and not turned out that way.  I assume some sort of transformer would have to be mounted somewhere unless they came built into the base unit.   I'd be open to florescent lighting if it makes it easier. I haven't seen this instructible on the site.  If it is thanks for reading, please disregard and point me in the right direction.  I have the hardest time sometimes trying to find something specific for some reason. TIA Danneauxs

How To Get Music From an IPod (all models)

Here's how you do it. 1. Hook the iPod up to the computer. If iTunes pops up and asks you if you want to replace anything, say no. You can hit ctrl-shift-esc and go to processes, then close the iPodService.exe to get you more time. 2. Go to My Computer. It should list the iPod as whatever you named the iPod (like Joe's iPod). Click on the drive. 3. You should see some folders. If you don't see one named iPod_Control, go to the Tools option at the top of the window (its on the bar with File and Edit). Click on the "Folder Options" selection at the bottom. When that opens, click the View tab at the top, then scroll down the list and choose the "show hidden files and folders" button under the Hidden Files and Folders folder. The iPod_Control should show up. If not, go to the address bar and type it in. 4. Under iPod_Control, you should see a Music folder. From here, you can either copy the whole folder and paste it somewhere on the computer and put them in iTunes later, or you can find songs. If you do a search, you should be able to find songs by putting in what to search full under "word or phrase in file". If you want to put in music that will play in the iPod directly, you're going to have to go into one of the folders in the music folder (usually like f00 or f01 or something), find a file (usually with a random 4 letter name like MLKJ), take the song you want to play, rename it as the song you're replacing, then copy and paste it in there. Usually you want to reaname the song you're replacing first, then find it later. If you want to make sure you don't replace something you want, view the folder with details, right-click the top of the window in the bar that says "name" and check Author or Title. This will show what you're replacing. 5. If you want to put music on the iPod but don't want to have to lose anything, your best bet is to take the songs you want, put them in a folder on the iPod, and take them back to your home computer, add them to iTunes, then put them on your iPod. 6. To add songs to iTunes from a folder, go to File, click Add Folder, then find the folder you want and go. It automatically keeps the names and usually the album art with the songs. :B-Rad

Link open in new window not working

No posting dates listed on Instructables?

Looking at some current Instructables in various categories, I don't see any posting dates listed on the project pages. When did this start? Is there a secret way to learn the date? One of my biggest peeves on the web is press releases (or worse -- news stories) posted without a date -- one of the most important pieces of information! (the five W's of journalism, etc.). Or is this just a Chrome issue?

Hi-Cap horizontal magazine concept

Here is a concept I came up with a while ago. Basically, it is just a mechanism that allows a normal grey connector mag (I.e. One that would be used vertically) to be used horizontally, and so solving the problem of the low capacity of traditional knex horizontal magazines. However it is not without issues. The model used in these pictures is rather large, and there is an issue where the pusher cannot push the last connector out fully. Anyway, I thought I'd just I'd post this so if anybody is interested, they can use this concept and/or improve it so all issues are fixed. Just make sure to give me credit pictures: 1) overview  2/3)  overview of the mechanism 4) the red rod blocks the rotating mechanism so that no ammo falls out when not in use. Pull it out to initiate feeding

Noise cat scarer device with with motion detection

I need a cat/pet scarer device.  Main problem: Indoor housecats scratch bedroom doors during the night.  Observations: I''ve had partial success with a comercial product called "Ssscat Cat Spray Control System". It uses motion detection and a bottle of compressed air, shooting a burst of air on detection. The concept is good, but it's not easily available anymore and was a bit expensive. It seems that cats are more scared of the sound it makes than the burst of air.  Ideas: I was hoping to use a "Pyroelectric Infrared IR Motion Sensor Detector Module" and a small audio speaker to make a static sound (white noise) to accomplish a goal similar to commercial solution. A sound loudness slightly above normal talking sound would be enough.  The sound legth should be about one second. Maybe two LEDs lighting at the same time would also help. I would need about 2-5 such devices. They would have to be battery operated with an on/off switch.  Could such devices be easily built from components? If so, I would need on finding the right components and instruction on building the device. I have only basic skills like soldering and tinkering, but I don't know how to design electronic devices more complicated than simple LED projects.

Instructables YouTube Show/Series

Hello! I had the idea of making a YouTube show promoting great tutorials and projects from Instructables about 3 years ago. At the time I didn't have the skills to create it. After taking up a short course in video editing and graphics, I was finally able to create it!  I wanted the show to really help get the word out not only about Instructables, but also the world of DIY, recycling, re-using, creativity and the hands on building skills that many of us are losing because of the impact of new technologies. If the show motivates just one person who isn't familiar with Instructables to create something, I think it's a great success! Here's the first episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXky2Ot7cOg I hope you like it! There'll be more episodes to come! Thanks,  - Nick PS. All authors gave me permission to feature their Instructables in the video.

Voice changers

I know voice changers have been done, but theres only 2 instructables for some rather simple changers and other forum queries are quite old. What I'm looking for is a diy, real time voice changer circuit that can alter pitch and modulation, preferably with pots for fine tuning rather than presets, hopefully without the tinny sound I hear from the majority of samples I've listened to. An amped output with volume control would be cool too to overpower the users voice a bit easier. I'm looking for an output akin to this as an ideal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dqr5K0K4wL4 I'm no stranger to micro electronics, I can read codes and, with a little review, understand gates and ICs but still have no clue how to design my own circuits to do more than flipflop and turn things on and off. Any ideas ? Kits, DIY plans etc ? Simple and portable is better, want to incorporate it into a costume.

Calculate magnet repulsive force?

I'm looking to make a "floating" model by insetting NdFeB rare-earth magnets with same poles facing so they repel. Now, magnet selling places specify the "pull" a magnet might have, say 1.2kg. What I would like to know is if the repel is equal in magnitude as the pull if two similar magnets are placed with same poles facing, is the force exerted 1.2kg and so I could float 1.2kg of stuff? Also, does stacking magnets double the attractive or repelling force, i.e. do two 1.2kg magnets stuck together lift 2.4kg of stuff, negating the small difference in distance of one magnet from the object? Is there a way to calculate the distance between two opposing magnets with a force applied. Does it follow the inverse cube rule? And if the stacking does work, do I also need an equal number of magnets on the other side for repelling, i.e. a stack of two 1.2kg magnets repels 2.4kg with one 1.2kg on the other side, or not? Does the magnet on the other side have to be the same force? Lots of questions but hoping someone can shed some light on this as I've not been able to find anything about it :-(

Multi language instructables

Hello, As a french user, there is a feature that I feel is lacking on the website: the possibility to translate an instructable to make it available for people who do not speak english. There have been a few times here where an Instructable was the perfect how-to to share with people in my local maker community, but most french people are not fluent in english. So I had to translate it for them. Furthermore, I would be happy to translate some useful instructables here and there when needed around me. But this work is not shared to the community of Instructables and makers that could benefit from it, only to a few people around me. Could there be a functionality on the website so that an instructable could be translated and made available in multiple languages ? I do not mean that everything should be translated in every language and all, but if someone translates something, then it can be made available to other people speaking that language. Well, I hope you consider it, My 2 cents, pol / littlevache

Ongoing bugs

We have ongoing problems like postings still going into the digital nirvana for no reason. Ads showing for premium members. Contests simply show up without being on the list of upcoming contests first. The editor is still very sub-standard, although for writing this you offer already much more than for for an Ible... What I would like to see is: A) A central point where users can report bugs and site related problems. B) An official statement to the problems listed there. C) A timeframe in which we can expect the problem to be fixed. Sure I have no clue how many people are actually working on the site but I do know that improvements and fixes are more than just overdue. The site lives from the users and what they post here, so I think it is only fair to start to listen to them ;)

Image Processing Tutorial : What you do for your images?

Image Processing Tutorial : What you do for your images? Are you in possession of images you want to convert in to digital form? Or simply you would like to perform some operations to enhance their outlook?  Similarly if you just want to extract some useful information from them, all you need is a photo house that carries out image processing. This is where you can have a photo you want manipulated made  the input as you give  specified characteristics you want included. To do image processing, you may have to apply a set of signals that can give you   the desired results. There are three distinct steps to follow in any image processing. They include: Importing images using a scanner or a photography Analyzing and manipulating images using enhancement and compression methods Altering the results we obtain at the output level There are plenty of reasons for carrying out image processing; the reasons and purposes are as follows: So that you can easily observe the parts that are not visible Restoration and sharpening the images for the purpose of making them look better Image retrieval – if you are interested in any particular image, you can have it retrieved. Identify the number of elements making up a pattern Distinguish the object and its image. There are   two methods that can be used in processing any images. Digital Analog If you are analyzing hard copies and printouts, this is what is referred to as visual techniques.  It involves use of various fundamentals and image processing techniques. You need to make use of technicians who are vast in image processing. They may use visual techniques and apply a combination of individual knowledge and experience in image processing. If your pictures are in a digital form, you may employ digital processing techniques to manipulate those using computers. Images collected from sensors and satellites can be manipulated to get the real images or data.  To do this, you need experts who can take the images collected into a number of phases before coming up with the required images.  They must have the latest skills to help them get over flaws and get original information. The data or images collected may be taken through the following phases; Pre-processing, Information extraction, Enhancement and display. Other than image processing service, you may need team   to deal with computer graphics. This is where any desired image is manually made using physical models. It could include lighting, environment and natural scenes. This graphics can be used in animated movies, computer vision and plays. It can be used to create moving images to depict a story. Generally, imaging is key in image processing. The designers should consider a number of factors including; Human visual – where the designers consider the psychophysical process that takes place in human beings as they make sense out of information they see and receive. Lastly in all these, ensure that you get a clipping path company that is vast in imaging and which can work hand in hand with you to ensure that you get the required results.

Back to the Future contest opened a bit late

So, as we all know, the day that Marty McFly travels to in 2015 is fast approaching (October 21). As a big BTTF fan, I put together an entire Marty McFly costume complete with holographic hat, Nike Air Mags, and jacket. A couple of days ago I posted an Instructable on how to make the jacket, but now it seems I am ineligible to enter the Back to the Future contest that just opened today. (I didn't even know about it because it wasn't on the upcoming contests forum post or the contest page of the app) Obviously, I'm pretty bummed and honestly it seems kind of late for the contest to start only two weeks from the day that people are going to want to have a bunch of BTTF props and costume pieces put together, don't you think? I actually rushed to get my tutorial finished because I wanted to be sure that others in the community would have enough time to follow it and make their own. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a way I could still enter. I would just post a new, improved Instructable for the same thing, but I don't want to feel like I'm spamming or have my featured percentage to go down. =\
