Artist 3D prints sculptures with human ashes

Dutch artist Wieke Somers has created a series of sculptures that are made with human ashes. She uses a 3D printer to assemble them, although there's no detail about the construction process in this article. Much more attention is given to the reasoning why in a classic artist statement: dutch design studio wieke somers does not want to discard the many benefits of technological innovation and its inherent mentality and the joy and will to create. instead she wants to make a statement about the current state of affairs in design and our conviction that we need a new view on what is necessary in the 21st century. her project 'consumer or conserve' evaluates this notion of a second-life. she considers, how human ashes can be reused by means of rapid prototyping or 3D printing, so that we may afford someone a 'second life' as a rocking chair, vacuum cleaner, perhaps even a toaster? would we become more attached to these objects if this was the case? would our willingness to pay more for a product increase if it is made from human tissue or ashes? I'd guess the answer is "no." Little bit creepy. Then again, Ed Headrick from Frisbee had his remains mixed in with a bunch of discs after he passed on so who knows? wieki somers: consume or conserve via inhabitat

Laugh a Little

Greetings!      Where I use to live my local paper posted some funny stories or or sayings titled "Laugh a Little" hence the name. I decide to post some of them to see what you think. None of these are ones that I made up, they're all from the paper. If you want me to post more I will. I have lots of them.      Enjoy.                                Questions that haunt me! Can you cry underwater? How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered? Why does a round pizza come in a square box? What disease did cured ham actually have? How is it that we put  man on the moon before we figured out how to put wheels on luggage? Why is it that people say they 'slept like a baby' when babies wake up every to hours? If a death person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing? Why do people pay to go up in tall buildings and pay to look through binoculars at things on the ground? If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a coconut radio, why can't he fix a hole in a boat? If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?                                 Church Bloopers  The fasting and prayer conference includes meals. The sermon this morning 'Jesus walks on water.' The sermon tonight: 'Searching for Jesus.' Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husband. Don't let worry kill you off - let the church help. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community.  A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.

Moss table provides a green furniture option

These tables by Ayodhyatra are made with a sweet collection of mosses under the glass top. It makes for a really nice piece and and I'm sure if I had a coffee table like this it wouldn't be buried under magazines and books the way my current one is. No need to worry about maintaining the mosses, either. They're all dried. Link

Published Instructables never appear - spam filter bug

Without fail, every instructable I publish gets stuck in the Instructables spam filter. Now some might consider my Instructables to be spam, but it's a real pain to put a lot of effort into an instructable, and never see it make it through to official published status. I always have to send a PM to @jessyratfink to ask her to release the Instructable from the filtering system. It would be awesome if whatever it is that is causing my Instructables to be tagged as NGFI (Not Good For Instructables), be corrected. That way I would not have to bug @jessyratfink every time I hit the publish button!

Can you help me with my mini E.M.P. generator design?

Hello everyone! I am currently planning on bulding a handheld E.M.P. generator (it's dangerous, I know, sorry) that is capable of killing a small devices (e.g. a small camera) at close range (<10cm). I got to the capacitor bank and wondered if 180J is enough for my needs? I also have some other questions (in no particular order): - What is the bare minimum to kill such devices? - Does it normally take 90 secs to charge a 90uF bank to 2kV (using a DC boost converter)? I have never designed a high voltage charging circuit before so I don't really know if I'm doing things right. - Is my capacitor configuration good enough or does it need tweaking (e.g. more voltage)? - How do I protect my circuitry from getting blasted by the coil? - Is a single pulse sufficient? - What kind of switch should I use for high voltage? - Should I use lithium-ion batteries for supplying power? - Should I make the frame of the device out of metal? - Should I be using a DC boost converter for charging capacitors? If not, suggestion? - Should my coil have a little or a lot of inductance? Again, I am fully aware this has "Darwin Award" written all over, sorry about that, but I think this is safer than guessing around. Thank you for reading this! Looking forward to your responds!

Gears for Servos and Steppers

Hey guys (and gals), I've been researching this a lot, but I still haven't the solution.  When you are working on a project and you need a gear for your stepper or servo, where do you acquire it?  For example I work a lot with TowerPro 996 servos, but I haven't found any third parties selling gears for them.   Same thing for motors.  If you are using a stepper motor, like a NEMA or something where do you find a gear that attaches to it?

help creating a biosensor prototype

I will attempt to be as concise as possible. That said, please bare with me if things are explained as well as they need to be, I am very new to this. Determined, but still a novice. I am conducting research as part of an effort to create a wearable prototype. Essentially, I need to combine a ppg heart rate monitor with a infrared thermometer (to measure skin temperature) and to have both devices maintain bluetooth capability. Any input in regards to this would be amazing.  More specifically, I am wondering if there are any DIY ppg heart rate monitor and/or infrared thermometer starter kits? Or resources that will assist with building these elements, aside from tutorials. I ask because it is a challenge to uncover all of the nuance and intricacies with electrical engineering and design without having a sufficient background.  For instance, it is clearly possible to add a bluetooth component to a heart rate monitor, but I am unsure if the two components (ppg hrm and infrared therm) must "talk" to each other while maintaining a bluetooth connection to a website or some other device.  If this is all as "simple" as building these devices separately and adding a bluetooth component to each of them, it would be greatly appreciated if you can provide a specific link to easy sources to obtain the components. I think I can follow along the tutorials, though there are still questions there.  Salud

Can you build a pmdc motor that can pull a skateboard prety fast on 240W?

I'm trying to build a pmdc motor (perminent magnet motor) based on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKklyuzghQg But I want to make it in a much biger scale and instead of using a ceramic magnet I wan to use 2 big industrial neodymium magnets instead they will pull up to 200 pounds. I want this homemade built motor to pull a scooter like vehicle (skateboard if you will). It will be powerd by 2 12V 10A batteries wich doing the math should get me: 12V+12V=24V 10A+10A=20A 24Vx20A=240W The coils will be made from 1.5mm thick copper wire. Based on what I've said do you think the motor could be powerful enough to pull this scooter with someone standing on it at about 20 to 25mph? can this be done?

Ethics Question

I need to do a quick survey for a class I'm taking, so consider this hypothetical situation: You are living in an apartment with a roommate. This roommate always has some form of change, and usually drops it in a bowl on the top of their dresser. Over the course of the year, this amount has grown substantially large. Today, while you can manage to get by, you are a bit short on cash. Your roommate is out, and you remember this bowl of change. The question: Would you take any money out of this bowl, and most importantly, why? If you could also tell me your gender (if you're comfortable with it) and approximate age (preteen, teen, 20's, etc.), that would be most appreciative (It's important to the survey). Cheers! ~Alt

All I have is an idea (And a love of instructables)

Hello dear Instuctablists, You can't see me, but I am down on one knee. It's intended to show my deference to you. The reason? Well, we just finished rebuilding the ground floor of my house and there's now a big, deep-ish rectangular space above the toilet (about 70cm x 50cm and 15 cm deep). I was looking at it the other day, and had an idea for what I would like to put there that made me laugh out loud. The trouble is I have NO IDEA how to make it. Not only that, I can't think of any search terms that are leading me to 'how to' videos. In short all I have is an idea and no clue how to even begin making it. So, here's my idea. What I want to make is what appears to be a framed picture of two velvet curtains. BUT when you flush, the curtains draw back (like at the theatre) to reveal a small scene inside. Lights come on, some music plays, little toys/characters/puppets appear and then ten seconds later, the curtains close and that's that.  In other words and automated, electronic, toy theatre. So what I'm asking is either a) If you have any idea where I should start with this could you tell me where or b) If the end product sounds like something you'd like to see exist and you know how to make it, do you want to mentor me? (We could turn it into a YouTube video/series, do it over Skype or if you're in/near London, UK meet up IRL). Maybe I'm over-reaching in the help stakes, but every time I look at that blank piece of wall, I think: try. Any help gratefully received. Even if you can't help, thanks for reading this. RH (Also, I can't work out how to turn that picture round either. Sheesh. This whole thing is a TALL order)

A fountain that does NOT run on electricity

I know it is possible to build a fountain that runs on gravity and water pressure, but I'm not sure how to go about making one. I understand that you can't get something from nothing, and I'm not looking for a fountain that would run endlessly. If someone could show me the basics of how such a font might work, I would greatly appreciate it.

High carbon steal annealing/tempering

First off, I'm not entirely where to post this nor if it has been posted elsewhere (i did do a quick check but i didn't spend too much time on that endeavor). So if this is not the correct/best place to post this i will move it and if it is elsewhere then i will delete it. This topic starts with a question from something I just recently did. I got a high carbon steel marking knife (its a Hock tool) and when i got it, it was bent and i heated it up to a nice red color, let it cool, tried bending it, and broke the tip off so i sharpened it back to a point and heated it up until it was no longer magnetic and heated it at 450F for about an hour. After doing this and checking some charts I was expecting a golden/brown color but instead got a blue color throughout most of it. So do i need to redo this or is it harder than i would expect from a blue colored steel? So I'm sure there are plenty of resources out there for figuring all this out but i was hoping this could be a centralized area for anyone to get all the information they need on this topic. what are some tips/tricks on annealing/heat treating/tempering iron, steel, and high carbon steels? is there a difference between the three  (annealing, heat treating, and temper)? what is the difference (if there is one)? what should someone expect from doing something like this? what would each color be useful for (which would be best for a drill bit or which would be best for woodworking tools etc.)? any tricks of the trade? any personal tricks that you wont find anywhere else? anything else to add? ANYTHING that is relevant would be helpful, im sure there are many people that could benefit from a list of tips from those who actually do these things. if i remember to do so i will post this blue marking knife that i'm talking about.

Best Material to Use in Toy Manufacturing with 3D Printer

I don't really have any background in manufacturing toys but a guy in my warehouse is trying to create some prototypes on the side for a line of figures. He compares them to these Monsters in My Pocket toys: http://i1.wp.com/pixelvulture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/90s-Kid-Monster-in-my-Pocket.jpg And these Muscle Men: http://i.ytimg.com/vi/6SfDGf7b4_o/maxresdefault.jpg They look like they're made of rubber. I was wondering what material you'd suggest for creating durable prototypes of similarly sized and shaped figurines?

Two rotating discs, synced and remote controlled.

I realized that I change the angle of my speakers many times a day and it gets really cumbersome. To use my time better, I thought that I'd be nice to have motorized rotating discs under each speaker, wired so that I could adjust their angle from a simple remote controller on my desktop. This would be because if there's a program, the speaker angles would always remain in sync in relation to one another, and because sometimes the speakers are actually located a bit inconveniently in terms of getting near them to adjust the angle manually.  Take a look at the attached image. I can't get that stupid image uploader to work, it uploads but doesn't keep the file, so here goes:  https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/31684214/Speakers.jpg Before you start criticizing it, don't: The point of the image is to demonstrate a principle. It doesn't tell anything about the room that the furniture is in. It isn't in scale. The sound fields of the speakers aren't trying to portray reality accurately, they're just there to make a point. Everything in the image is a rough sketch and its purpose is to make explaining easier.  As you see, the situation is that sometimes I sit at the desk, sometimes at the back of the room. If I keep the speakers pointing almost straight (like image 2) while sitting at the desk, I feel like most of the sound really "opens up" behind my back only, going past me. If I keep the speakers in 45-degree angle (image 1) but decide to watch videos from the sofa, again I feel like the sound isn't quite pointed at me and it's especially difficult to listen to dialogue. Before you start talking about the room - yes, I know about acoustic treatment and I'm taking it onto account already, but my auditory processing isn't normal so the acoustic treatment alone isn't enough, speaker angles make a huge difference for me. I'm saying this because the internet is full of people who get too caught up on the actual principle and start explaining why they think that I don't need something or don't have a problem with something. From having manually adjusted the angle thus far, I already have the experience of how this makes my life easier. I'm looking for advice/help or someone to make this for me as a service. Due to shipping costs, makers should be in Europe only. Advisors who could guide me through, doesn't matter where you are. I'm guessing that besides the disc parts, the remote control would require knowledge on electronics and coding of microcontrollers. The controller could either have a wheel or simply two buttons, one closing the speaker angle, other spreading it wider. The angle range only needs to change within 90 degrees so that suffices, but the program doesn't need a specific angle limiter made if it happens to be able to turn, say, 360 degrees. Taking ideas of methods, estimates, part choices and possible compensation fees!

UPDATED What Airguns Do You Own/Recommend?

I ended up getting a Crosman Vantage. It was on sale for $70. I think the MSRP is $145. Yeah, I know, it's just a budget springer. But that was what I was looking for. Not something to last me the rest of my life. It has a good reputation for decent accuracy if you use the artillery hold. With 7.9 grain pellets it should be getting about 900 +/- FPS. It came in the mail the other day. Pyramid air has fast shipping. The wood is acceptable, and the barrel lock up is very solid and their is practically no barrel droop. I haven't shot it yet, but the barrel is very easy to cock for a sub magnum springer. Of course I only cocked it 80% of the way and I don't want to dry fire it. I have some Crosman Premier Hollow Points to try in it, as well as some cheap pointed pellets and destroyers I'll use to break it in. I think it will be fine for tin can killing. Not sure it's the best hunting implement, since the included scope is meh.

Induction Heating

High frequency induction heating is basically a very efficient way to heat ferrous metals. Induction heating uses an powerful magnetic field to induce currents within the surface of the metal being heated. This means that the coil will not get hot unless the material being heated transfers heat to it. Induction heating is very efficient because no heat is wasted, no heat is wasted because the coil does not produce heat, the heat comes from the workpiece being heated only.

Furniture finish made from LP's (vinyl, not wax)

I remember an old episode of The Furniture Guys where the hosts melted old wax (gramaphone) phonograph records and used it as a really nice Asian-style furniture finish (high gloss black, piano worthy).  I wish the same could be done with more modern vinyl records, of which I have a lot. Any ideas of how this might be done? P.S. No, I won't destroy any records that should be saved for future generations. Will my progeny really profit from The Bangles or Heart?

Power Banks vs. ac wall outlets

I've observed in many power banks, that they charge up my phone a LOT quicker than a conventional ac adapter plugged into a wall socket. Why is this so? Many of my friends share the same observation. I'm building a simple power bank myself, and I want to make sure I can enjoy this feature when I use it too. I plan to use this instructable as a guideline with some modifications: https://www.instructables.com/id/Rechargeable-homemade-Power-Bank-super-Easy/ I'll be using four 3.7V batteries in parallel and stepping it up with a step up converter, so that the mAh value gets added up (forgive me if I'm wrong, but I believe mAh adds up when batteries are in parallel). Will this arrangement give me faster charging times like the power banks available in the market? Is it a safe circuit? Please suggest as I am eager to build this :) Thanks in advance :)

Need your input on the acceptability of posting a medical device ible

I am a new member but an old reader.  If websites were worlds Instructables would be my home planet. I have plans for ibles that center around stuff I make for my small farm and old house; my kid calls it The Things My Mother Finds In Other's People's Trash.  No problem there.  My editor (I do a little no-big-deal writing) told me I should make an ible about ostomy care as it's something I deal with daily since I underwent a total colectomy and nephrectomy from cancer.  By the way, if anybody happens to post an ible for a replacement kidney...  I wanted to post some ibles about different ways to cut the wafers, the part the pouch attaches to, to accomodate different body types, how to make the process so simple you can take care of it in a few seconds with a bit of privacy, how to easily and thoroughly empty the pouch, which for ileostomy patients is a 12 or more times a day;  modify underwear instead of buying special $55 a pair "ostomy wear" and most important, how to CLEAN AND REUSE those pouches that come twenty to a box (that's a MONTHS supply), cost over $100 after insurance, and are supposed to be worn DIRTY and then thrown away in the vast sea of plastic, a biohazard and a weight on the earth. I realized that although my ideas are kind of no-brainer simple, the subject might attract really brilliant people who could offer better ideas and designs.  Before I went forward with my postings though I wanted to check with you all and ensure that the subject matter would not be so gross or offensive to the community that it caused a problem.  I'm so conflicted about it myself except when I get mad about it that I didn't feel I could trust my judgement. I really appreciate you taking the time to read my long ramble here and any advice you would like to render. Thank you so much!

So I have an outline plan and want your inputs if I am doing something wrong or if you have a better suggestion. 1) Get a plastic box in which iphone cases come (some thing like this but which is strong http://i01.i.aliimg.com/photo/v3/1574895035_1/iphone_5s_case_hard_plastic_box.jpg) 2) Get a rubber seal and fit it exactly for the size.     http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/AlwAAOxyOalTYCK2/$_35.JPG 3) Make a wrist strap with some elastic and make a holder for iphone with it.       This holder is needed to keep the phone in place on hand and when I want to take the pic I can easily get it off, shoot and put it back. 4) Fish wire.      This will be used to connect the actual phone case and wrist strap so if I drop the phone it still remains with me or use a retractable cable to make it more professional. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZbiJQuOsL._SX466_.jpg So far this is my idea, what do you guys think about it ?

Velleman Sound to Light module LEDs always on.

I  have made the velleman sound to light project: http://www.vellemanusa.com/downloads/0/minikits/manuals/manual_mk103_rev1.pdf the LEDs are supposed to turn off when there is no sound and go bright when there are loud sounds. Mine are bright all the time. I first tried the kit using my own blue LEDs instead of the red ones supplied, these worked for a time then they just stated to give a VERY small amount of light. I switched to the red ones and now they are on high all the time. I also accidentaly connected R3 with C4 (see PDF). C1 and R2 are also connected by solder, im not sure if it should be like that, I also kinda damaged the C1 connection hole as I partially burnt it with my soldering iron D:.  Could any of these issues be the reason why my kit inst working? I have attached pictures of my board Many thanks, Rushmoore :)

[Arduino] Problem connection Bluetooth

Hi all, A while ago I got a HC06 bluetooth module. In the beginning everything worked OK, but now some problems have appeared. Pairing in Android works fine, as well as with my laptop. The problem arises when connecting my phone (Google Android 4.2 with Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR) to the device. BlueTooth Serial Controller 16 seems the only working app, but I would like to use my own application, based on the code described here https://www.instructables.com/id/Android-Bluetooth-Control-LED-Part-2/step8/Download/ Also other apps like BlueSerial Beta and Bluetooth ssp pro do not work. Does anyone have a clue how to solve this problem? Many thanks in advance. Regards, Zytro

Amazon Taking Orders for Custom 3D Printing of Videogame Characters

I read today that Amazon is now offering 3d printed models of videogame characters that the customer can customize. Its only certain game characters and I'm an older fella so I don't know what games they're talking about. Still, I'm glad to see 3d printing taking another step toward the mainstream.
