Macro lens attachments

I recently got a set of marco lenses for my DSLR, an old E300. They are the simple kind, basically a magnifying lens that screws onto the the existing lens system like a filter. My first impressions of this simple and relatively cheap alternative to a dedicated macro lens in the 400$ range were quite good. But I also found some downsides and would like to know if they are a general thing to accept or a result of poor quality standards. 1. Although about 20% of the lens are unused (nothing at all visible when covering the outsides of the lens) there is some nocticable distortion happening. Especially the corner areas of the image when the object fills the entire picture appear to be slightly bend. Is that due to the marcro lens being a single and cheap system or a general thing with these marcro filter lenses? 2. It is quite hard to to get a clear focus even with F22 settings and good light. With the X4 lens it is not too bad and leaves about 8mm of totally sharp image before it gets blurry. But when using the X10 lens I often have troubles getting a sharp image of an object that goes less than 5mm into the background. Using a smaller setting, like f11 and only 1-2mm of the image is clear and sharp while everything in front or in the back of this area gets more and more blurry. Is this due to the marco lens affecting the focus? For example taking a full size shot of a rose flower is next to impossible if the entire flower should be be sharp - I would like to be able to get at least 10mm of totally sharp image when using f22 settings :( If this is a downside of cheap filter lenses then I already learned my lesson, but would like to know a bit more before saving money on a dedicated macro lens that I will rarly use...

K'nex Laptop Stand

Hello all, It's been a while since I've made anything with k'nex, but I just recently made a nice laptop stand that I wanted to share some pictures of it. If you like it you can probably make it from the pictures, but I don't think it's worthy of an instructable.

Reversing Direction of Power Tool

It would be nice to be able to reverse direction of angle grinder, mototool, and similar tools. Sparks may be flying toward ones face in certain positions. The tool also may also tend to kick due to wheel direction. These tools arent made to reverse. How can one change this?  How can one keep the wheel from unscrewing and flying loose once the motor is reversed?

Solar oven theory

When looking at various solar oven on instructables, they almost all use refective coating of some sort on the inside. That to me makes sense for the concentrators/parabolic/funnel ovens, etc. I am just wondering if the regular box ovens if it really makes as much difference or if the heating factor there is more so just the still air in the box being heated and not able to escape. I want to start making solar ovens to get an idea of how they work. I have a square piece of 1/4 inch glass, probably 4 ft by 3 ft. I thought about just digging a cubic hole in the ground and laying the glass over top.

Ember's Mechanical Designs are now Open-Source

We released the mechanical design files for the Autodesk Ember 3D printer in Fusion 360. Here's what I wrote about it on Ember's blog: The full design of Ember in Fusion 360 is now available for you to freely view, download, inspect and modify.  I've been having a blast with the explode model function! We're sharing these designs under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, the same license Arduino uses to share their design files. Just like the formulation for our resin, we're explicitly inviting you to understand, remix, and remake Ember.   Ember's Mechanical Designs are now Open-Source

PIZZA THURSDAYS!

Hey Everybody! Today is the day I decide to share this gem with you. Here at Instructables HQ, we often have pizza on Thursdays. It was initiated by Randofo's deep desire to keep his office companions happy and fed, and has evolved into a reason for me to make the following artworks. Each image is mailed out to the entire office as soon as the pizza delivery person arrives. Pizza Thursdays also lives on tumblr. Made on Mad's last day as an Artist-in-Residence. SelkeyMoonBeam and AmandaGhassaei playing Psycho Scooter Scramble   I will continue to generate sweet pizza art, every Thursday that we have pizza (and maybe forever). I will keep adding the new .gifs to the comments of this blog. Stay tuned.

Indianerfolis 2015 is basically the foam dart version of K'nex War 201#, and will include many military simulation and dart tagging games intended to provide lots of active fun! If you don't have any Nerf guns, K'nex guns are also welcome, as long as they don't have the ability to hurt someone. So far, Nerfrocketeer, JonnyBGood, a few NerfHaven members, a few of Nerfrock's friends, and possibly a few extra tagalongs will be there! More information can be found below: ---------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Saturday, June 27th, 2015 Time: 1:00 PM to around 4:00 PM. Location: Southeastway Regional Park, 5624 S Caroll Road. We will play other games later in the day if everyone wishes. WHAT TO BRING: Nerf weapons, ammo, and equipment (complying with rules). Light/Tactical Clothing Lunch Anything you may need in an emergency. This may include special medication, money, a cell phone, and so on. Eye protection, closed-toed shoes, and a ride are mandatory. Friends! Homemades and modded guns are welcome, as long as they follow these rules. Modified Nerf Ammo with sharp edges, points, or explosives, besides straight foam and hot glue stefans and slugs with washers, are absolutely not allowed. Blasters that look too realistic are not allowed. No mind-altering substances of any kind. Eye protection, closed-toed shoes, and a ride are mandatory. No homemade swords or shields. Five tags with a dart is out for the current round. Hit in the arms, blaster, or face doesn't count. Nerfrock' is a referee. Nerfrocketeer reserves the right to eject anyone from the war. No bad attitudes, vandalism, or other illegal/ socially unacceptable behavior. You can bring your dog, as long as it's friendly to strangers. No real weapons. You can trade/sell if you wish, but all responsibility for trading falls to you and the person you are trading or selling with. JonnyBGood's Other Hobby

Well this may seem out of place in the K'nex forum, but since I am a member of the group I think this still applies. For the last couple of months I've been pretty inactive as far as my K'nex building has been concerned but as you can probably see from the pictures my time was being completely consumed by my Nerf hobby. Let me also state this while I'm at it.... No this does not mean I've stopped K'nex building, I've just been sidetracked for awhile. My reasoning for moving to Nerf is mainly because of a resolve I made at New Years to start tinkering with electronics, and of course I wanted to keep shooting projectiles so Nerf was perfect. It also allowed me to participate in more wars, again I love K'nex and I look forward to our once a year K'nex war, but one isn't quite enough for me.  Nerf also gave me one other edge that I wasn't getting with K'nex, and that was a marketable product. Kids are willing to pay on average (based on me stalking ebay for a month) 40-80$ depending on gun and paint job quality. So I have a possible source of income custom painting Nerf guns.  When should I expect another K'nex ible'? Well I have one last Nerf build I really want to do ( rapidstrike uzi ) and after that I will refocus of getting some war guns together for the K'nex war this year.    So in summary, that has been what I've been up too. If you like any of my work and would like to make an offer I will gladly consider anything reasonable, so send me a PM. I plan on eventually selling "Vanguard" themed white Strongarm's because I can paint those relatively quickly. The Rayven Roughcut integration ( Mine is called the Universal Remote) is my piece de resistance right now and I'm insanely happy with how it's going. If you know a friend that may be interested in my work, I'd appreciate any referral. Also note that I'm not doing any commissions.... yet. I'm kind of addicted to the art of making a well painted and functioning Nerf gun right now.  Thanks for reading, more K'nex projects coming soon!     JonnyBGood

Raspberry Pi sensing audio?

Hi all -- I have been programming all kinds of things all my life, but I have never had a chance to build a program that responds to audio input.  Suddenly: Dancing Baby Groot.  I have a great idea for an algorithm for making a very clever and funky Dancing Baby Groot using Raspberry Pi or Arduino -- if I can figure out how to get the processor to "listen" to audio input. How would I get one of those processors (or any processor) to "listen" to the mic and translate it into either digital or analog data which one could then plunder to figure out the tempo and beat in order to get Baby Groot to Dance?  I am 100% sure I can do the plundering (because it works on digital files) if I can get the processor to "listen" to the mic and create a file of numbers which represent the music being played. Any suggestions?

Making a mold.

I am trying to make a fascia panel for a car. In order to do that I need to make a cast of one of the voids in a panel, from a vehicle console, since it can't be measured easily. I want to make the cast so that I can then make an accurate template from which I can make the panel I need. I am looking for a material that is non-destructive to the plastic panel that contains the void. That will create a rigid solid replica of the void. I know nothing about making molds and casts. Thanks in advance.

Attempting my first custom figure - Ferra/Torr

Hello, I've decided to finally try my hand at doing a custom figure. I want to try and make Ferra/Torr from Mortal Kombat X. Little guys riding on big guys is one of my favorite things for some reason. I figure it's probably best to start with Torr (the big guy). Right now I'm looking for ideas on what to use for the base body. I'm leaning towards a Marvel Select Ultimate Hulk as my base figure. I like his facial expression and his hand situation - one closed fist and one open hand with big grody fingernails. I have some concerns though, I've heard his articulation isn't as good as some other MS hulks. Does anyone have some insight into this? Would I be able to get him into a sort of hunched over pose? The little picture on the left shows the size relations between Ferra/Torr and a regular person. I was kind of thinking of going with a bigger scale and using real materials for the cloth and armor and whatnot. I work in a metal shop, so I could probably make the metal bits and bobs. Again, I have no idea if that would be a nightmare or not. Thanks, Me

Easter eggs in Google and other things

I came along some easter eggs for Google that you simply type into the search. Examples are: do a barrel roll tilt what is the answer to everything More easter can be found in the Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Google_hoaxes_and_easter_eggs For example, today, April 1, you can get a Pacman View in the street view of Google maps. Pacman uses the roads for the game :) But I guess I found one egg that is nowhere listed so far: Tpye into the Google search: currency us au $ And check the quick result, it will tell you something about 1 Australian dollar microsecond au US$ = 114 210.494 m s U.S. dollars² Not sure if it is a bug because of a confusion with the µ sign but I am sure there must be problem when I try to pay in microseconds.... Anyway check the Wiki page for more great Easter eggs on Google. Post the best eggs you find elsewhere!

Oops!

Over the years I've done a lot of things that didn't work out well, and I try learn something from them  hoping to avoid similar problems in the future. I think ibles  needs a place to share these 'educational moments'  to help others avoid pitfalls and to console with laughter anyone who is sitting amidst the ruins of their own project.   So here's the  place to share.    I'll go first........... My first dramatic failure at about age 8 - Gluing glitter onto balloons. Not a good idea. The glue popped the balloon (I think it was 'airplane glue' ) The result was glue and glitter everywhere (including in my eyes) and a lot of unhappiness. Then there was the hot glue surprise -  Using a glue gun to close drip irrigation holes in a garden hose.  It plugged the holes and worked just fine in the overcast cool spring weather. Then a rare sunny day  heated the hose, and all those plugs melted and the holes started jetting water.  I hadn't realized how hot a green hose in the sun could get. And I have made some just plain stupid moves - like spending hours pulling all the shreds of paper out of the toothed wheels on the paper shredder.... you know how they get sucked inside.  After getting it all clear I thought I might as well lubricate the thing with spray silicon stuff.  So far so good. And then I was so excited to see how it much better it would work, I turned it on.  Flash of flame, slightly singed eyebrows, and a TOTALLY dead smoking shredder.  Ummm.... it's really worthwhile to let solvents totally evaporate before turning on electrical things.

Educators and Where to Find Them

I am in search of educators and students using Instructables as part of a course or class. I would like to present at my state and national art education conference in the next year on how to use Instructables.com as a resource for student learning, sharing, critique, and assessment, but I have not been able to try this yet in my own classroom. It is a hope for the future, as my district has Instructables blocked through our web filter presently. If you are using Instructables for any of these purposes or know of someone who is, please drop me a line through a comment or PM so we might connect and share thoughts and experiences.   I'm posting this in feedback, because I am unaware of any way to find these people otherwise. Could there be some way to search for users that have added a particular city, state, or country to their profile? A profession section in the profile that is also searchable would be helpful as well.  Additionally, I am all for web anonymity and staying safe online, but it seems rare for authors to include their location in their profile. Requiring or encouraging authors to include at least the country of origin would  make it easier to understand and connect with those who come from a country or state/province/county that is not your own. For example, if I see an ible with less than perfect grammar or spelling, it is easier to overlook when I see that the author is not from an english speaking country. I have my state listed on my location, because we Texans have some pretty unique traditions and perspectives that may seem foreign even to those in another state.

[Help]Opening a Asus laptop charger

Hi everyone! My asus charging cord broke and i bought a replacement. However, im having trouble acutally opening the charger case/brick. I have been trying to use a screw driver to open it up, i used a hammer, a hammer and a knife but nothing =/  Anyone has any suggestions? These "methods" i tried were the ones i found on youtube and they seem to have worked in the videos but mine seems a bit more tricky.  It doesnt have any screws in sight to take off either. I attached a picture of one like it here Thanks in advance!

I HATE group work.

HATE HATE HATE!It is really the one thing I dread about school. More than anything. It makes me want to pull my hair out. It is a requirement in Kentucky schools that you have a group assignment in each class and it makes my life a living hell.I always end up doing all the work and I really don't like other people getting the same grade as me for doing nothing! For example - I am in a group with five other people right now, 3 of which are athletes. They can never do anything. They constantly say they're busy. They decided that we should do our outside work tomorrow, right before I have to go into work. And as if that's not stressful enough, none of them actually mentioned doing the work we need to do before we go out and do assessments. The pre-assessment work is very involved - we have to do six physical activity assessments on elementary school kids, with 3 criteria that should be met for each assessment, as well as making up data collection sheets for each assessment. We also need to get our assessments OK'd by the teacher before we go. So now I'm sitting here stressing out wishing that I could just do this project myself and ease the pain. I emailed the teacher and let him know what was going on, and none of my group mates have emailed me back yet.I think I'm going to go make grumpy faces in the other room and get off the computer. :P
