Does anyone know where to find a replacement part for an antique platform rocker?

I have an antique platform rocker that I need a replacement part for.  It is a cast iron arm at each end of a wood spindle.  Looking up online I found it may be called the "Lowentraut mechanism" and was designed in the late 1800's.  The rocker I have is in good shape but only has one of these cast iron arms and I am trying to find a way to get a 2nd one to complete the rocker and refinish it.  I am attaching a photo of the one arm that is on the rocker.  Any information on how to find a replacment part would be appreciated.

Old CD/DVD Drives with 2 wire DC Motors for DIY CNC

With a lot of old electronics lying around, I embarked on taking them apart  with the intention to use the sled motors to build my first CNC. Unfortunately, I found only 2 wire DC Motors with limit switches on the laser sleds.  Here is a list: 1.Sansui DVD with Sony Laser Carriage- 2 wire sled motor with Limit switch 2.DVD player from 32cm Bahun TV        -2 wire motor with limit switch 3.CD Drive from Dell Laptop                    -Miniature motor with LS & 2 track ribbon connectors. 4.Mitsumi 31/2" Diskette drive                 -Stepper with less travel The only 4 wire stepper motor was on the diskette drive. Is it possible to use the 2 wire DC motors in my project? What sort of logic control will be required. How did they function in the DC/DVD drives?

MOSFET

I am using a MOSFET with a remote control momentary switch to turn a 1.5v mini DIY motor, which in turn controls the movement of a tiny plastic mouth to simulate speaking.   My issue is this.....the MOSFET I have calls for DC 3v-5v powersupply.   When I use 3v, the battery drains very quickly.   I've found no such thing as a SMALL 5v battery in the U.S., so I switched to 6v and it works just fine, but I am worried I will damage the MOSFET.   Here is the spec info from the seller (we are using Version A - DC3v-DC5v).  Product Description 1. Working Voltage: A: DC3V-DC5V     B: DC3.5V-DC12V  Optional                                   2. Max Load: 1A (have better load less than 700ma)  3.  Working Frequency: 433.92MHz   Working Current / Quiescent current : 7ma/H  4. Frequency Deviation: more or less than 0.2MHz  5. Working temperature:  -20'C- +80'C  6. Receiving Sensitivity: ≥-110dBm  7. Output State: A: Input DC3V-DC5V  Output DC3V-DC5V

Inchies

When I say Inchie, you say What?Inchie! What?Inchie! What?I just this minute found out about this whole Inchie movement thing, and I LOVE it. An Inchie is a piece of art that is 1" x 1". The end.It can be made out of anything you want. It has to be 1" squared. I'm beginning to really catch on to tiny crafts (as you may see in some upcoming I'bles), and these are too adorable to resist. My first thought is that I'd be way too impatient to work on such a small scale. My second is that I could have a complete work of art in under 30 minutes. . . So.Here are some examples I came across on Craftster. Rainbow Inchies1000 squaresPhizzy's InchiesAnd well, you get the idea.Enjoy and be sure to post your own inchies!

Foodsaver Freshsaver Handheld AC power hack

Foodsaver makes a small handheld unit called the freshsaver handheld. It is rechargeable but has a strange design which requires the unit to be pre-charged immediately before using. After use, the unit does not hold a charge very long. 24 ish hours if I recall correctly. The starnge thing is the unit will not operate when plugged in. I guess it's just designed that way. I remember seeing a tutorial on how to make this thing work on ac power but, I just can't find it now, no matter how hard I try. Would some kind soul please solve this puzzle for me and make an instructable? Pretty please?

On iPhone iOS 10 Safari how do you bulk erase ALL bookmarks not in a subfolder w/o having to reset the whole phone?

I'm using Safari on the iPhone 6 with iOS 10 and am looking for a way to erase ALL bookmarks (and only the bookmarks) that are not in a subfolder, without having to reset the whole phone, or having to delete or reset the rest of the data on the iPhone or other applications. Just Safari. Over the past few years I evidently accumulated several thousand bookmarks on Safari on my iPhone.  I never created any folders, so they are all directly in the top level "Favorites". I can find no buttons in Safari to bulk move them all into a subfolder or delete them, the only way I have found so far is to go into edit mode and individually delete each one by tapping the red minus sign, which takes forever.  Especially if you have like 8000 bookmarks.  WTF. I looked it up on the Web and all I'm seeing are older threads saying that to clear all your bookmarks in bulk, you have to reset the data for your entire iPhone.  That would be a nightmare, as I have settings and data for hundreds of other apps and e-mail that I cannot afford to lose or redo. I don't have the countless hours that would be needed to back up my phone, wipe it, and then restore it. I also found a couple of 3rd party tools that claimed to be able to wipe out the bookmarks, but in the details they all seem to be variants of the above wiping out the phone, the only difference being that these tools just use their own method to back up and restore the phone - it's still the same time consuming and invasive kludge. As a workaround I tried turning on iCloud to sync iOS Safari bookmarks to the browsers on my Windows 10 PC, hoping if I then delete them on the PC, that iCloud will delete them from Safari on my iPhone. I turned on iCloud syncing for Safari on my iPhone, and I turned on iCloud syncing for my browser on my PC (I actually tried it for several browsers - IE, Chrome AND Firefox). After a few days(!) all the bookmarks from my iPhone eventually appeared in the bookmarks on my PC, but when then tried deleting or editing the bookmarks in my browsers, the changes did NOT appear on the iPhone. Rather, any changes I made to the bookmarks on my PC were overwritten by what's on the iPhone the next time iCloud synced.  In fact, I started to see many duplicates appearing in my PC's bookmarks, and the folders and bookmarks were all out of order.  What's more, any date information that was preserved for each bookmark on my PC was reset to the date/time of sync.  I often go to my Favorites folder in Windows and sort by Date Modified, so now that is gone.  WTF. But back to the main question, how do you bulk clear out all the bookmarks in Safari on the iPhone without affecting any other apps or settings on the device?  It would be nice if Apple supported the concept of a "Select All" button in iOS (this would be useful in lots of places!) As is I am ready to just quit using Safari and find another browser (alas not Chrome because it just crashes constantly since iOS 10).  Any help appreciated.

Wind powered desktop PC, is it remotely possible?

So I was thinking up an idea this afternoon about how I could be more of a PC enthusiast, I came up with this idea: What if I could power a desktop grade PC on just the power supplied by a wind turbine (preferably that I had made myself), and batteries? My plan was to set up a (either or) BOINC Computer specifically for research, or something like a DNS/VPN server or failing that something like a NAS. Anyway, heres what I have been able to find so far in terms of wind turbines and power... http://www.mdpub.com/Wind_Turbine/ https://www.instructables.com/answers/how-to-battery-power-a-desktop-pc/ It seems way over my head, especially the second link to the other question. Computer Specs that I had in mind: Intel i5 K series chip of sorts 8-16 GB of (presumably DDR3 memory) A motherboard, again, not sure exactly what but this can be chosen nearer the time, if it helps, something with around 2-4 PCI-e lanes for numerous GPUs. (This is NOT meant to be a gaming rig). A couple of GTX 760's I was having in mind, something older will do too. (This would be using the CUDA technology for accelerated processing) A Power supply that would fit the bill... 1000 watts? May be needed depending on the number of GPUs I have. I am so ignorantly unaware of how this would work.  Other things that I would need: - A wind turbine that was able to charge batteries during the day (for example) - Batteries - Some sort of converter (I think) to change whatever AC power there may be into DC. I think that is what I need,  Thanks in advance! slippers.

Voltage rail identification on LCD PCB

I am testing the DC rails coming off an LCD TV PSU so i can convert the unit to run off an ATX PSU. i have managed to find (labelled on the board) 12v, 12v, NC, GND, GND, GND, ?, ?  the last two aren't  labelled. the two pins (when tested to GND) are giving me -12v, could this be right? I'm guessing by this point ill just have to use the 12v rails, GND and -12v from the ATX to get this powered?  what else could those last two pins be?

How to limit welder current (heat)? Answered

Hi All, I admit to being electrically dumb, well one step above dumb, I'm a software engineer not electrical engineer, but I don't even know enough enough to be dangerous yet:) I'm going to be converting an ac welder to dc. It's a harbor freight 90 amp flux wire job, comes from the factory as AC for some unknown reason, but should be DCEN for FCAW welding. There are several walk throughs availabile online. I don't know the rules for linking to other forums, so I won't post a link, but you can google 90 amp welder dcen conversion if you want details. I attached an image of the circuit I got from a post by bluecatfish onweldingweb. I'll be taking the transformer output, running through a full bridge rectifier to convert to rippled DC, using capacitors to remove ripple, and lastly running through a torroid inductor. Another problem with this welder is it only comes with high/low power settings. The low is still too hot and burns through thinner metals.  I want a way limit current further, but maintain voltage for a stable arc. I'll be adding a bleeder resistor to drain the caps, which gave me an idea. At first I thought to use several more resistors in parallel with the bleeder to reduce current. I imagine this might work but be horribly inefficient. It would still use all available power from the supply, just converting some of it to heat, leaving less power for the arc. I've read that adding resistance in series will reduce current, but won't that drop voltage available for the arc? Then I was thinking, I have a motor speed control for a router. I believe this is a pwm. Could it be used to chop the mains input (120v 20a) to the transformer and reduce overall output without effecting voltage(I've read this is 38v 80a in the factory state before my mods)? since I'm adding capacitors downstream, will they just discharge too fast leaving me with ripple/pulsing? If so, how would I slow the discharge rate? (I'm looking at 3x or 4x caps 22,000uF @65v in parallel on a bus bar, so 66,000 or 88,000uF total). Sorry if in not making sense, as I said in the intro, I have a lot to learn, and right now, the more I read, the more confused I get. Edit:  After more research, and to hopefully use correct terminology, I think I'm talking about using a current divider when referring to multiple resistors in parallel to the welding leads. I think I'm referring to a switching regulator when I suggested using a pwm to chop the transformer input. Can either of these work like I'm hoping? Is there a better way, that is relatively simple?  Thanks in advance for your patience and help.

Alexa skill?

Hi, Have you guys ever thought of creating an Alexa skill? "Alexa ask Instructables how to make a...." In theory anyone could make one by scraping the pages, but I was wondering if you guys had one in flight, or might be interested in helping me create one. By helping me, I'm thinking about a way you guys might know to provide the text/images without having to do a scrape with a third party tool. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Since Google Home just came out with a way to read out recipes, I think it would be cool to try to have Alexa read out Instructables. There are certainly challenges involved like maintaining a session while doing a project, but perhaps the user could ask Alexa to start at a particular step if needed. Just some initial thoughts. Thanks, Sam

sound effects modules

Hello!! I am planning several Halloween props that will benefit bigly from sound effects. For instance...I'm working on a mantel version of the demonic grandfather clock in Disney's Haunted Mansion. It would be awesome to have the sound of the ominous ticking, backed with a chime, that the "real" clock has. This could be an audio loop of just a few seconds. Some of the other parts of my scheme would be enhanced with short loops of sound effects or mood music...a minute or two at most. I don't have a background in electronics, but I can follow directions. Any advice on constructing a few, small sound effects modules? Thanks!!

Quadcopter using 12V battery and Wood Screwers

I’m currently attempting to rebuild the quadcopter demonstrated in the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa_x93JQhNM The materials I have are as follows: • SMAKN Buck and Boost Voltage Converter • 20 AWG Flexible 1007 Wire Electric wire 20-Gauge Copper Hook Up Wire • 2300KV 2204 Brushless Motor CW&CCW; • 12V 7 Amp EXP1270 Rechargeable Lead Acid Battery • Carbon Fiber Propeller • Digital Multimeter Attempt 1: We connected a motor to the 12V battery using clamped wire connects – there was a lot of sparking and the motor did not spin. Attempt 2: We connected 2 motors in series – connected the motors and the 12V battery to the buck boost convertor – which resulted in the battery smoking and the buck boost convertor burning out. Can you watch the video and explain to me the wiring aspect to the quadcopter - I believe I may be missing necessary wires such as a female insulated connector that connects to a terminal wire which connects to the 4 motors in series but I’m not sure.

customisable backpack blueprints

Hi there, I have been working on my final bachelor project for my Industrial design bachelor.  I have been working with a certain technique, which allows me to integrate wood into a backpack, which in turn can transform into a low table, for picnicking.  Since I still needed to integrate a digital aspect in the whole design process, I wanted to make a digital program which allows the users to customise blueprints to their own needs. My questions is: in which way, would such a program be helpful for a DIY'er? what does the program need, in order to be useful. (other than changing certain sizes) In the pictures, you can see how the blueprints are interfaced momentarily. with the mouse, you can drag the blueprints and change its sizes. however, I feel there are more aspects which could be integrated into this program. any feedback is more than welcome! greetings, thomas

What potentiometer to use as audio control in car stereo?

Hello all I am working on installing a tablet into my car instead of the original head unit. But since the tablet will be permanently mounted inside the dash, I have no way of turning the volume up or down on the tablet, therefore I need to install a potentiometer into the audio cable that goes into my amplifier.  I have tried with a dual LIN 100kOhm potentiometer, which worked to an extend, but not as well as I had hoped.  It did turn the volume up and down, but it couldn't turn the volume all the way down as I had hoped it would be able to. I just want it to be able to turn up quite loud, but also turn all the way down, so I don't have to pause the music everytime I want it to be quiet.  Cheers! Mathew

When I went to the printer tab it said no printer is connected (yes my printer was on and plugged in). I figure this is because it has a proprietary atmel processor in it. I then plugged my Arduino Mega in and went to device manager and installed the drivers. Cura did not recognize that either. Am I missing something that the printer and Arduino are not recognized??
