Creating an electromagnet as powerful as an NeFeB magnet with same size

Is this possible? So I'm working on this project on levitation using superconductor and strong NeFeB magnets. I'm try to determine the possibility of replacing the magnets with electromagnets equally as powerful and of the same size if not smaller. But I'm bit skeptic about the idea as I'm not sure how possible it will be to construct such electromagnet (or buy them preferable). Is this something that is possible? can anyone reading this give me recommendations? thanks

Solar Powered Electric Wheelchair

I would like to put a Challenge out there for anyone to come up with. You see, I am in a wheelchair and I would love to go hiking with my son, but my chair can only go so far before it needs to be plugged back into a socket. I hate this, because it keeps me from going most places I want to go outdoors. But it dawned on me that if I had a Solar Powered Option to my chair, nothing could hold me back from being outdoors again. Ok yah,  it would help if I could redesign the platform & wheels too, but that's not the most important part... I NEED POWER. So, if anyone feels like taking on a new challenge and you are into Solar Power perhaps you could help me in this way. Thank You for your time in reading this, I hope to plant seeds of inspiration with all of you! May Love Light Your Way, Blessings!

Need a USB-Controlled lock box

Google led me here, and I have to say that I'm very impressed with the ingenuity of the people here! Hopefully someone here can help me. I'm trying to find a USB-controlled box. The box can be quite small, as it needs to contain just a single key. As for the USB part, I can go two ways: first, I would need the state of the box lid (i.e. open or closed) to be sent via USB to the computer. Or, the second alternative would be that the box lid would only open if a certain signal was received via the USB cable. I can do the software programming to either send or interpret the signal, it's the mechanical part I can't figure out. I would happily pay someone to build this for me. Any suggestions? Thanks! Lee

Help connecting a Led strip to laptop power source.

Hi all, I want to illuminate my laptop keyboard and since the name of the device is LAPTOP meaning it is a mobile device, the tutorials on Youtube were not that promising ... and trust me I searched a lot. I work at a lighting company, we have tons of led stips ... the lowest is a 12V 7W LED strip and that's 7W per meter ... the closest CUT-HERE mark on the strip involves 6 SMD LEDs which is enough for me, this strip doesn't overheat, I put my finger on it.  The question is it possible to solder these 6 LEDS to the 12V DC power jack of the laptop or the USB power (+ / -) port ( on the mainboard ) .... as for the strip itself, I can install it on the Laptop Chassis, not necessary inside te Chassis in a very neat way. can it be done? is there any risk on the laptop ? .... will the USB still be usable ? ( again I don't want to plug a USB cable to power the LEDs I want to solder on the USB port on mainboard) Thank you

Friendship Lamp

You may have seen these online selling for ridiculous priceshttps://www.uncommongoods.com/product/long-distanc...But it occured to me how easy this would probably be on arduino. Do any of you know what would be the bare minimum you would need to get this to work? I would assume you'd need them to connect to wifi, and just send a simple signal but I'm not quite sure how to implement this. Any ideas from those more knowledgeable in the particulars? Thanks,

Rescue a defunct phone charger

I have an old cell phone charger that is very handy for charging my Kindle Touch and a set of Bluetooth earbuds. It quit working one day after someone used it to charge a high demand device. I read that the capacitors in these often fail. I got two electrolytic capacitors at a surplus store for less than a dollar total. I had to use a fine saw to open the plastic case. The new capacitors were the same electrical size, but not the same physical size. Closing the plastic case was not an option. I covered all exposed electrical contacts with hot glue, which is an excellent insulator. It looks ugly, but I have a good versatile charger again. (The high voltage connections are buried deep down where my fingers can not reach. As best I can tell, the terminals covered with hot glue for insulation are all low voltage.)

Foam Board/Cardboard Shoes

Hey, I was walking past my little sister watching PBS Kids and on one of the shows this girl was trying to make her own shoes. Out of cardboard. Lightbulb. The only reason that they didn't work is because they got waterlogged. I am thinking that with good enough sealing and strong enough glue, useable shoes made from cardboard are a possibility! The only problem is that I don't have foamboard or time to spare or a working camera at the moment. If anyone could carry this idea further than me, have at it!

Extracting lead from car batteries?

I have a couple of battered old car batteries. There is no local scrap dealer that will take them so I was wondering if it would be possible to extract the lead myself and sell it for scrap. I have searched on google and cannot find anything about this and I suspect it would be dangerous and impractical. However I thought there's no harm in asking here. I was imagining that I could open the battery up and pour the acid into some kind of strong alkali, neutralising it to make it safe for disposal. But then, I certainly wouldn't like to try this without some advice first. Cheers! Pete

Hi, I'm a student and I'm looking for an experienced partner for help with my project :)

Hi, my name's Chaitra and i'm a 17 year old product design student in the UK, doing A level product design. As part of our coursework, we are required to find and interact with an "expert", a person with a good level of understanding of product development and technology. As you might expect, it's quite hard to find someone like this at random, which i why I've come here to see if anyone is willing to collaborate with me :)My coursework will be based on air conditioning, specifically regulating and purifying air conditions during sleep, so it will involve a good amount of electronics and physical design. As the "expert" of my project, we might exchange ideas and offer suggestions to improve the project, and even maybe advice on the best ways to manufacture the final prototype for assessment. You can be as involved as you want to be honest, I appreciate that everyone is busy so you won't be able to commit a huge amount of time to this, but maybe exchanging emails around once a month? I might send over some sketches / cad files over email for you to evaluate and suggest some improvements or ideas on, nothing more than that.If you're willing to help, please answer this topic so we can work something out! Thanks a lot :)PS. this is my first time using instructables, if I've submitted in this wrong place or something, please let me know

Is anyone skilled in metallurgical engineering?

*Yes, I know, another question involving college and my future life.*I am kind of split between mechanical engineer and metallurgical engineer. They both have some great benefits and trades that I'd love to go into, but it's difficult deciding which would be better for me.I do aspire, no matter what field I go into, to weld and do other metalworking, although I don't just want to weld for people. I know it sounds weird, but I like to take the time to know about what I am working on, and not work at "face value", if you will. So, any mechanical or metallurgical engineers who want to try to sway me one way or another, please do so now. ;-) Thanks,Bran.

1381-J replacement for Miller Solar Engine?

I know BEAM robotics have fallen out of style a bit, but I hope someone is still mucking about with them because they are super cool.  I am working on a Miller Solar Engine and trying to find a replacement for the 1381-J voltage trigger. I tried out the DS1817. It was recommended to me by one the technicians at Digi-Key as a replacement for the MN1381-J and on paper it looks like a good swap, but in the circuit it is just not resetting once the voltage drops.  I have it breadboarded and I can stick the 1381 in it and it works perfectly.  When swapped with the DS1817 it triggers once the top voltage is reached, but then never resets (it just drains forever.)  I double-checked the component type to make sure it was just not a miss shipment of the wrong item, but it checks out.  And I tried swapping the DS1817 component out thinking that I just had a dud (or 5) but it does not seem to help.  Any thoughts? Here are the data sheets on the 2 items. http://datasheets.maximintegrated.com/en/ds/DS1817.pdf http://www.semicon.panasonic.co.jp/ds4/SAG00003CEM_discon.pdf one bit of weirdness I already figured out is that the 1381 looks like it has a different 1-2-3 pin out sequence at the top of the PDF but it turns out it does not at the bottom.

An awesome website I found for sharing the tools you use in your Instructables (or for anything else!)

I recently found a free website called Kit.com, and as the name implies, it's a website for making kits of the stuff you like and useSo far, I've made a bunch of different kits such as " Dremels & Rotary Tools: All of The Accessories You Need" " My MUST Have Workshop Tools I WISH I Would've Bought Earlier!" (And several others that are organized on my Kit profile page)I think it's a pretty cool website, and encourage everyone to make their own kits of the tools and stuff they use in their projects! If you make your own kits, link them to your Instructables profile page (Like I did with Linktree), and post a comment below so can all see what you use and waste more money on tools we're sure we need! :)They also have an option for embedding the kit in a website which looks really nice (see this, though when I tried it once it looked a bit different), but unfortunately Instructables doesn't support it... (hint-hint!)You can also create an affiliate code, so when people buy through the links, you earn a few percent of the sale, which is pretty cool too!Maybe unrelated, Kit was just acquired by Patreon so if you read this in the future it might not be free. I have no idea. Also, if you're an SEO genius you need to tell me how to make it so my kits rank on Google!Post a comment if you make one!

Tin Can Turbine Engine

Hello!               Let me give you some insight into this project (Tin Can Turbine). I'm going to school to get an Airframe and Power Plant Cert. (Aircraft Mechanic). I stumbled across this idea on YouTube one day in class and it really got my gears turning. It's purely for fun, and I'm not even sure if I have the technical skills to get it to work.             First of all the way a turbine engine works in layman's terms is Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow. The fan section sucks air in from the atmosphere, Where it is moved to a compressor section which squeezes the air into a tighter pocket of air; which makes the air hotter and more explosive. When the compressed air is pushed into the combustion chamber, it is more volatile than normal air due to the compression. When you add a fuel (jet fuel, gasoline, propane, kerosene etc...) it will ignite with the compressed air (given that there is a spark to get the fuel vapors to ignite). When the fuel/air mixture is lit the fire will continue to burn without an ignition source due to the explosive nature of the compressed air. And the gas (burnt fuel/air) is pushed out the exhaust. There are blades in the rear of the engine called turbine blades, which are connected to the front of the fan/compressor section, in some cases there are two or three turbine blades, which drive the fan, compressor sections independently. Due to the turbine blades being pushed by the exiting gasses, the engine becomes self sustaining. And through black magic, you have a jet engine!!!              I'm going to attempt to construct a jet engine (not a motor!) out of a "tin can". I'm really not going to use a tin can, I'm actually going to use .032" thick 3" wide, and about 6" long exhaust piping made out galvanized steel. It's a lot thicker than a typical soup can, thus willing to stand up to more heat. My proposed fuel source will be propane, because it's cheap, and the I'm sure that I'm capable of controling the amount of fuel going into the engine. I'm not sure yet how many fan blades vs. turbine blades that I'm going to use. Right now I'm in the experiment phase. My blades are going to be made out steel can tops, because there is very little cutting involved, beside the actual cutting and angling the blades. and they fit perfectly into the pipe. As for the fuel delivery i'm going to use a copper pipe that is approx .042 thick and hallow. I'm going to cap the end, and wrap it around the inside of can. There will be eight holes drilled into the copper, which should give it plenty of fuel at equal pressure all the way around the can, equals same heat all around.         As for the drive shaft, I'm not exactly sure of what to use for that. I may want to go with something hardened already, so the heat surrounding it won't melt it. (that's the hope anyways) . I'm also not sure of what sort of bearings I will use. I was thinking skate board bearing with the plastic crap around the middle taken out (so it doesn't melt and seize the bearings) and extreme high temp. white lithium grease for lube.          This is an experiment and I guarantee myself absolutely no success. But I think it will be fun to try. Questions or comments are more than welcome. Please, if you see any problems with the design, let me KNOW!!!

Husqvarna chainsaw carburetor adjustment tool

I just worked on a Husqvarna 142 chainsaw for a friend. Yes, there are openings in the side of the machine so the Low and High carburetor screws can be adjusted, but a special tool is required, or parts need to be removed from the saw so the screw shanks can be grasped with a pair of needle nose pliers. A special tool is svailable for about $6 US. It fits over the longitudinal ridges on the upper part of the screw shank. I discovered the right size of semi-rigid plastic tubing makes an effective adjustment tool. Just cut a length three or four inches long. Push one end onto the desired screw shank and turn to adjust. The tubing is rigid enough that it does not twist, but turns the screw needing adjustment.

Wood varnish questions

I want to varnish this birch plywood platform to keep it as waterproof and UV resistant as possible but also keep it as close to it's original pale birch colour as possible. i've never varnished anything before so i've been googling for answers and i'm getting some conflicting information, i've been looking at different clear outdoor varnishes and most claim to protect against UV light and not leave a yellow tint but most reviews say otherwise and some general varnishing info articles claim that clear varnish can't protect against UV at all and i'd need a dark stain which i really don't want. so what can i do to protect the wood against the elements and maintain the colour as much as possible? can i combine varnish with other stuff? i found some clear 'marine varnish' is this heavier duty than normal wood varnish or something?is there an alternative to varnish that will have a similar effect?if i need to modify the platform later, cutting bits out or drilling new holes is it ok to just apply another layer of varnish to reseal it or will it need preparing in some way or some additional step?

Instructables, Contests and Copying

Copying and rehash are not things often regarded as good for do-it-yourself communities, yet Instructables is currently quite accepting of things that would fit under this umbrella and in some cases even sponsor it. I hope to convince the administrators that new rules need to come into play--particularly with regard to competitions. I'll discuss why unoriginal projects are a problem, lay out the causes of this and present some solutions that the administration could pursue. Copying is a problem for Instructables because making your own example of someone else's creation with no alterations does not advance development at all. In many cases, these copies even infringe on copyrights. In competitions, such as ones on Instructables, copied projects can become popular and even eclipse original designs; this discourages originality. An author might ask himself why he should bother investing time researching and developing a project when he could just as easily locate an existing design and copy it instead. In many cases, the causes of copying can be innocent, such as when a child who posts his friend's favorite paper airplane design (which actually originates out of a copyrighted book, for instance). While innocent, this action still proves unhealthy to the DIY community. There are also less innocent types of copying as well; such as those who knowingly steal creations and post photographs or links to media of creations not of their own design. While this latter type is less prevalent on Instructables than places like YouTube, it still occurs due to embedding. To discourage unoriginality and encourage advancement, Instructables staff should make a few changes to how entries are looked at as far as appropriateness goes, as well as what gets featured or judged a winner in contests. Projects that are not original should be recognized as such. It might be appropriate to outright disqualify an entry or issue it a penalty or rank reduction in judging. It is not advisable to feature unoriginal designs. These sort of steps could encourage people to contribute rather than copy. I hope I have inspired thought in others regarding this. I have talked about the problems of copying, why it happens and how it might be addressed--hopefully it is.

Anyone have any information (not contained in the ad) on this?   It'd be most appreciated.

Hi there. Very simple question from an idiot. I'm making a mini puppet of robby the robot from forbidden planet. for the mouth i've a simple set of cheap battery powered leds. There are 20 leds and i've got them in 2 rows of 10. I want to be able to operate them in a really simple way so that the top row comes on or the bottom row or both on to simulate robby speaking. My plan is to split the set of lights into 2 sets of 10 and have each on a circuit where i was going to make a switch for each set that is simply something you press down. Then having the 2 switches next to one another so you can press 1 or the other or both at once simply with your thumb, and i'm thinking of simply using a coke tin aluminium to complete each circuit. I can imagine someone who actually knows what they are doing thinking, this guy knows nothing! and they'd be right! but any tips or alternative methods or even confirming this plan will work are much appreaciated, thankyou.

I need help writing a program on Lego Mindstorms EV3

Whattup y'all, I have a Lego Mindstorms project underway, but I can't figure out how to write the program. If somebody out there who is familiar with programming EV3 could help or give me some tips, that would be great! The project is as follows: I built a start/stop timer for micro drones (i.e., a Tiny Whoop) so you can measure your time around your course. Start the program by pressing the center button on the Smart Brick. The setup measures whether or not the drone is on the starting block with the color sensor (either ambient or reflected light intensity). After the drone leaves the starting block, a timer will be set. The timer stops after the drone hits the stop gate, which presses the touch sensor. The time is then displayed on the screen, where you can view it, and then the program is restarted by pressing the center button again. My problem is that I have no earthly idea of how to make a timer with the EV3 software. If you know how, then screenshot it and send it to me, and you will be rewarded with a great Instructable in the near future!Auf Wedersehen, and thanks in advance!
