Ipod flash drive

Hey I was looking for a broken ipod mini the other day so I could get a new case for mine, and I noticed that many of them still have working hard drives. That's when it hit me. I was thinking, why let all that space go to waste, when you pay $80 at the store for just a 2 gig flash drive. Would it be possible to make a flash drive from the hard drive in the ipod? At first I was just going to wire the drive to a USB port, but I'm thinking that may not work. Does anybody out there know more about how flash drives work? I think I have a good idea, now I'm counting on your imput!

Where did you get your start?

Hey all, I've been looking through this site a lot, and I have been intrigued by all of the amazing projects. However, I feel my knowledge of electronics is very lacking. So my question is, how did you begin getting involved in electronics? Is there a web site I can go to, or a book I can read, that will explain to me all of the basics? For example, something that will explain fairly in-depth how circuit boards, transistors, resistors, and all of those great things work. I appreciate any help I can get.

A couple of sweet new features

There's a couple of cool new things we just released that you should check out. There's now a tool bar above most of the text boxes that will help you remember the special formatting characters used to modify text. Just highlight the text and go: bold, italics, typed, bolditalics, links, and video, oh my! (Make sure the triple brackets for typed and the text you want formatted that way are all on seperate lines.)Currenly we support embedded video from Google, Yahoo!, and YouTube. Just drop the URL of the video into the Video URL. The default view on the explore page is now a selection of random Instructables. It refreshes about every 10 minutes, so hopefully you'll see a few awesome Instructables you've never seen before.I've managed to find some really great people to help out with the site, so soon we'll be able to start giving you the features you want (I really do read everything in the bugs section!). So, keep your great suggestions coming.

Want your own factory for $2400?

Article in this weeks's New Scientist - they've developed a desk-top fabricator:The standard version of their Freeform fabricator – or "fabber" – is about the size of a microwave oven and can be assembled for around $2400 (£1200). It can generate 3D objects from plastic and various other materials. Full documentation on how to build and operate the machine, along with all the software required, are available on the Fab@Home website, and all designs, documents and software have been released for free.Unlike commercial equipment, the Fab@Home machine is also designed to be used with more than one material. So far it has been tested with silicone, plaster, play-doh and even chocolate and icing. Different materials can also be used to make a single object – the control software prompts the user when to load new material into the machine.Article: http://www.newscientisttech.com/article/dn10922?DCMP=NLC-nletter&nsref;=Video of it in action: http://web.mae.cornell.edu/ccsl/temp/EvanMalone/FabAtHome/SqueezeBulbDemoMovie.wmvWhat would you build??

Kiting injuries today at work

Don't expect any website updates in the next 12 hours, Rachel and I both drew blood while kite-buggying in the parking lot this afternoon. OK, the injuries are pretty minor in the scheme of things, I just wanted to brag that we went kiting during work, at work. Previously, I've always had to leave work to kite. We didn't take any pictures while actually out there, so I've included another image from my archive to show what it should look like. A sandy beach probably would have been a lot smarter than concrete. Oh well, I should probably order Instructables-team helmets.

Valve question

Hi all ... my first post is actually a question. I have been searching for the name of a specific type of valve. More specifically the name of the valve in a refillable butane lighter (the intake valve). The little brass valve that is usually at the bottom. I need something similar for a proeject I am working on but after looking for a while I have yet even to come up with a specific name for it. Also, if somebody could tell me where I could find some (doesn't have to be brass - as long as it is metal) ... I need about 20 minimum to begin with. Thank you very much, Iza Bl..

travelmate 2350 lcd backlight trouble

The lcd screen looses the backlight (inverter replaced) right afer boot-up (dos screen barely visible). If it is visible then only for a second or so and then with some magenta shade instead of black and white. Before replacing the entire lcd I'd like to rule out anything else that may cause this problem. The external video works fine. One other finding: When depressing the hybernation switch ever so slightly (without actually activating it) the lcd jumps back to live if only for a split second. Anybody have any ideas?

Is there a particular season for ginger root?

I was grocery shopping... one place (a Walmart Neighborhood Market) did not have any ginger (they did about two months ago). The next place (Publix -- a large supermarket chain in the south east) had some, but most of it was moldy and disgusting (surprising because Publix tends to keep very high standards). Just curious if there's a reason why I can't find any. I'm looking to experiment with homemade ginger ale - I had some in a restaurant, so I want to do some testing to come up with a similar recipe :D

NEED HELP! LED project .....

Hello, I'll make this as quick and simple as possible ... I'm working on making a headlight for my motorcycle (Kawasaki KLR 650) ... I have about 55 watts to work with (probably a little more than that now) ... it has to run on a 12v system... How much light is it possible to produce with this amount of power? ( I might have as much as 60 - 90 watts to work with, as I've swichted all the other lights on the bike to LEDs so my power usage is down from stock) It would have to have a running light ... and a "bright" light. I have no experience with LEDs, and A minimal amount with electronics. Any help would be apreciated.... I have no idea where to start with this... Requirements: Waterproof Super Bright (brighter than a 55w halogen bulb, would like to be as bright at possible) dim and bright mode Able to run in 0 - 130 degrees ferenheight evironment(spelling)

LED Light via USB?

Hi guys, I've been searching about, and this seems to be quite the vibrant community for DIY gadgets. I'd like to have as final product, a led light connected to a PC via USB - that has a software-controlled dim functionality (ie, 1 is on, 0 is off, values valid 1 < x < 0). I'm a seasoned programmer, but the hardware side of things has always been a mystery. Where to begin? Is this a complex project? Cheers. Alex

Embroidery Text Ideas -- Get a Free Custom Shirt!

So.... I'm at home for winter break and my mother has acquired this newfangled sewing machine that can do CNC embroidery. I've taught myself how to use it (and now teaching my mom :P) and I want to do an instructable.Tell me -- what text would you like to see on a T-shirt beyond the word instructables (I have several patches already :P)? Add it to my list below and I'll pick out a few ;)If the house is quiet enough (family of 6 et. al.) - I can probably take video of the process (from how to make a bobbin --> set the top thread --> fabric stabilizers --> needle selection etc.) and post it. I know it is a bit specialized to the machine -- but from what I found at the quilt shop... There's a lot of people that own the machine and don't know how to use it...Running List#Stercus fit (Translated from Latin: Shit Happens) <-- my girlfriend wants this :D#Jag Lik Bananerna (From Swedish: I like Bananas)#I Do My Own instructables#This T-Shirt Is Now VoidIf I like your post -- I'll make a second T-shirt for you. So post your T size with your submission. You can eMail me if you don't want to post your T size ;) Be aware - I'm learning through use. So there might be minor defects. Post soon because I won't be home very long.

Author stats and some other fixes

The author stats are back and are updated daily. See how many people have read your Instructable today, this month, and in total. Look for the stats in the upper left of your Instructables. With the author stats working again, you can sort the Instructables by pageviews. This can give you a sense of the popularity of various projects. Among other small fixes, we've found and removed the main culprit in the SQL deadlock issue. I haven't seen one in a few days, so we're cautiously declaring success. If you try to post a comment or save a step of an Instructable and get an SQL deadlock, send me an email. More fun stuff and fixes are on the way. Thanks for sharing your awesome projects and being patient while we grow.

Instructables and Squid Labs have moved!

Instructables and Squid Labs have moved! We finally ran out of space in our Emeryville warehouse. During November, there were literally people sitting on the ground working on their laptops because we didn't have enough desks, space for desks, or even chairs to sit in. We're now located in a secret location somewhere on an island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay with plenty of space and spectacular views. Since that free barge on Craigslist was taken before we could get there, I guess it's not much of a secret location considering there are only two possible spots left.Check out our new digs at the old the Alameda Naval base control tower. Yes, we are actually in the control tower building. There's three guns in the front, plenty of parking for school buses and free boats, and it's tough to beat the view from my office. More pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/93327160@N00/sets/72157594460055354/Directions to the control tower here.

New Years' Resolutions

Well, with my New Years' resolutions plastered on the Makeblog it looks like I'll have to work twice as hard to make sure I keep them. Here they are:Create more order. I find that once you have order, maintaining it isn't that hard. Apply this in practice to my garage.Learn a new language. Probably will be Ruby; Spanish will come next if I can reach a comfortable level with Ruby.Respond to or otherwise deal with every piece of email sent to me within 1 week or as soon as possible. Maintain an inbox that fits comfortably on one screen without scrolling.Say "good morning" with a smile, and mean it -- start each of my personal interactions out on a positive note every day.Try to have either a lower mass or lower volume of possessions by the end of the year. The LED lights light up but they are not bright like a flashlight and can only be seen in the dark if you put your hand up close. Im wondering where I went wrong? Amps and Speaker Sizes

I read that regardless of the size of a speaker connected to an MP3 or something, the sound output should remain the same. I assume this was incorrect because using large computer speakers seems to disprove this. Is this because the speakers have more surface area and generate more sound? So will using large speakers at max volume drain more energy than small earbuds at max on the same music player?
