How does a joy stick work?

I recently bought a bunch of electronic parts off a site named 'electronic goldmine (goldmine-elect,com). One item is a micro joy stick. No docs of course. It has a joy stick and 8 legs to hook up to something. How would I go about testing this device? I tried using a continuity test but nothing happened. Any ideas?

modify cd player to zoetrope

I am looking to modify a portable cd player into a zoetrope. this is fairly easy to do, but i have zero electronics knowledge and thought it would be good to ask if it is even possible.here is an old zoetropehttp://courses.ncssm.edu/gallery/collections/toys/html/exhibit10.htmi just looking for a one second loop of animation to occur.cds spin at about 500 rpm - which when you do the math is about 8x too fast. so how can i modify the cd player to slow down?i know that i could get a strobe light and try variations on the strobe, but since the rate of cd player spin alters from center to far edge (goes more slowly) the strobe light would quickly get out of sync.any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

packaging hack

My question is: how can I open a sealed toy package without damaging the package and in such a way that I may reassemble it after I’ve used the contents. Background: I am in the process of making a Super 8 film. One of my props are 3 Star Trek Borg action figures. I paid a pretty penny for them and only need to use them for a few scenes. When I am finished I want to put them back in the package and resell on eBay. Of course, I will give full disclosure to next buyer. The packaging is not true blister pack. It has a printed cardboard back with a molded plastic cover. I appears to be heat pressure sealed, probably with some sort of adhesive. I can provide digital pics when needed.

Image Problems

Hey everyone, I just joined today. I was working on my first instructable, I tried to uplad an animated gif I made showing what it does. Well the gif is bugging out, and I can't figure out how to delete it from my library. So two questions: 1. Can animated gif's be uploaded somehow that won't mess them up? 2. How can I delete things from my library? PS: Is this the right place to post this?

[Idea] - Styrene Glider Modification

I propose a modification of easily obtainable Styrofoam glider's allowing longer airtime VIA a small electric motor. To be successful, the modification must be light weight, cost effective and use minimal tools so smaller children (I think of myself as a big kid) can repeat. Before you go off on me for this not being an instructable - read this: https://www.instructables.com/id/EYD12YXN3XEP2873DL/ -- I'm going to try and breathe some life into the idea :PI'm thinking I'll find a personal fan (might be hard considering it's winter time :P) and start there. If I recall, those fans are directly driven and use one or 2 1.5v batteries. I think it can handle reverse polarity at 9v.I'll bore out a hole in the nosecone for the motor and hot glue it in place. If possible, I will place the 9v battery aft of the wings -- attempting to preserve the center of gravity. In the video below, when my buddy says "Test 2" that is the second test using his glider (after the fuselage cracked off on a hard impact). His wingspan was 12 inches shorter, and his glider was heavier. The video was recorded with an ATC 1000 helmet camera*** and hastily thrown together.*** I lost some footage -- on some impacts, the camera "froze" and the video did not save. I had to pull the batteries to get it going again. I suspect the memory card got jarred and the camera didn't know what to do with it. Or, something completely different. This only happened 3 times even though the "test 2" portion of the video was a vertical impact.Suggestions and Feedback welcome :)

Can I use a multimeter for measure voltage drop in LEDs?

I have a really cheap multimeter, but it has a "diode" position in the main switch. As the LEDs are diodes, could I measure the voltage drop for use in resistor calculations? My guess is "yes", but I'am very new to electronics... Thanks a lot.

Question about USB powered Fan.

Hello! I saw this tutorial... https://www.instructables.com/id/E5EU54XP26EP2871HG/And I'm not an electrician or an engineer and am not familiar with ohms or watts or whatever. But I read in the comments that USB has a 5v power output. Uhm, is it possible to get a 12v Led Fan cooler and power it via USB? Becaue I can't find anyone selling 3pin molex connectors that converts to USB.

Composites! My recommended source for resins, glasses etc.

First, I am not affiliated with this company at all. But, the HPV team I am on has used this company as a supplier for glass and epoxy resin the past two years with excellent success :) Even the gentlemen from Lockheed Martin that has helped us greatly was pleased with the resin.http://www.uscomposites.com/ http://www.uscomposites.com/epoxy.html <-- the resin (their brand - west systems is great, just expensive)We used the medium hardener/epoxy which gave us a pot life around 20+ minutes at 75ish degrees F and cured overnight or so. I highly recommend the pump attachments to make measuring an exact science. With one exception, every batch we made came out perfect. That exception was a set of test samples that took four days under heat lamps to cure. We think that there wasn't enough hardener to kick properly. The stuff was used to make HPV fairings for the past two years with a K-mat core. The picture here is last year's fairing that got vacuum bagged.Funny story, the gentleman that assisted us (with his experience) apparently knows Burt Rattan - you know, the man that built SpaceShipOne. The window idea was just an off the cuff joke we had that eventually made its way into solid works and ProE -- and then when no other window design was thought up it was cut out :PWhen I remember where we got it, I'll post our source for Micro Balloons (air encapsulated in glass) and K-mat (square scored foam core backed with a very thin layer of glass weave).Going from memory - the fairing below used 3mm Kmat core with S-class woven glass (can't remember weight). We might have used E-class glass too (not sure) because we have a roll of it from last year. Flanges (not shown) are used to support the upper canopy in place. They are made from glass with a "coremat" core. The lower removable section also has a flange to hold screw bosses - this was made from the same "coremat" setup. The whole thing was layed up on a male plug that was made from Styrofoam that was cut on a waterjet in 1 inch thicknesses - glued together - sanded - filled - glassed (to get it nice and smooth) and then covered with a wax mold release. When everything was layed up, a vacuum bag was cut for it and I believed they pulled 10psi (they went higher and the foam started collapsing). Now you may think I'm sharing trade secrets or something. Maybe so - but the experience we had access to was so helpful (this stuff looks a lot easier than it really is). I'm told that enclosed rear wheel was pretty difficult -- and it got quite a bit of attention at the competition :PAs I find more pictures and videos from past projects -- I'll post what I've learned. If you have any questions, I'll try to answer. Just keep in mind I'm not an expert :PPS: Next time you ride Dr. Doom at Universal Studios, Orlando -- look up at the decorations and such on the ride. Our experienced friend did all of those - yes, those pyramid/circular thingamabobs are fiberglass (he still has the molds :P). He came in 100lbs underweight ;)

I have an idea for an instructable but I don't know where to start...

I recently bought an ilo mp3 player because A) I'm cheap B) I don't need 30gb+ of space... my songs barely take up 2-3gb Anyway, it runs on a single AAA battery which is nice because it keeps the size/weight down but it's inconveniant to have to cart batteries around at all times :/ What I'm wondering is would it be possible to build some sort of AC adaptor that would connect to the battery holder? If so, what sorts of materials would I need?

Idea Repository

This could be considered a suggestion for the site -- but I'm curious of the forum response. Most of us have plenty of ideas (I happen to have journals just for this purpose) - but most of us lack the time/money to actually do them. Eventually the best/feasible ideas are actually completed - but there's plenty of other ideas out there.... So I am proposing a database of ideas/projects that you don't have the time, money or tools/knowhow to complete. These should be ideas that you don't mind putting out in the open. Along with the idea, a short description would be nice and how you think it should be completed... If this works, someone might see your idea and decide that he/she wants to give it a shot. With any luck -- many more of our ideas will get out there, well documented, etc. These ideas would otherwise be lost in our memories (or in my case living a slow death on paper :P). Curious what others think and if you want to add something -- post away :P
