Measuring oscillation of a multi tool

I have a harbor freight oscillating multitool that is advertised as oscillating between 10k and 20k oscillations per minute. In reality to speed control goes from 0 opm to an unknown value. I’m trying to set the tool to oscillate at 35 Hz. What is the best way to measure the frequency of the tool and set it to 35 Hz?

ESP8266 Huzzah automated connection protocol

Hello guys! I would like to make a very small android app (or anything easy to use) so that at first :1. The ESP functions as a Wifi router in a local area (so no internet access) and allows anyone using a phone for example to connect to its network to enter the credintials of his home wifi2. The ESP board automatically changes to Wifi client and connects to the given SSID/ PAssword entered by the user. This would allow people to change ssid connections on a different wifi access point even if they don't know how to use any IDE. If anyone knows a tutorial or another topic with the same question i'd be happy to know ! Thanks

what to do with a 50,000 volt Tesla coil?!

I just got a 50,000 volt Tesla coil (Oudin coil) for Christmas. I dont have a clue what i could use it for, i need inspiration. My uncle likes to surprise me with semi random things so other than shocking metal tables i just dont know what to do with it. ---from teachersource.com (where he ordered it)While more accurately called an Oudin Coil, these are commonly referred to as a hand-held "Tesla Coil." This coil is self-contained in a heavy duty Bakelite case which forms a convenient handle. The spark is adjustable from 10,000 to 50,000 volts at frequencies of approximately 1/2 megahertz. The high frequency spark produced is about 1" long and can be used for a wide array of applications. An instrument like this is intended for intermittent use only and must be turned off after 10 minutes of use. The electrode furnished is approximately 2" long and the instrument is furnished with an intensity adjusting knob. For 115v, 50/60 Hz. An improved SAFETY FEATURE is the ON/OFF momentary switch which is in the handle. This makes our Oudin Coil extra safe for classroom use. (Runs on standard North American line current, 110 volts 60 Hz)

Low quality prize

After placing second in a contest, I was very disappointed to find that the prize tool was a low quality tool from harbor freight which broke the first time I used it. I was also disappointed to see that they greatly overstated the $ value of the tool by linking to the most overpriced seller they could find (double the going rate for the tool). Last time I placed in a contest, the tool was a very nice dremel which I have used often and has not broken. Would be nice if they would give us quality tools again.

Fix the stubborn airplane mode in Windows 10

Since I got a Microsoft Update on pc, I got my airplane mode stuck to ON. I tried every possible solution provided by the internet but it got me nowhere. I tried troubleshooting it through Windows default troubleshooter, I went on to edit the registry files through registry editor, tweaked network and sharing centre but everything brought me nothing but failure.I had to reset my PC which uninstalled all of my installed programs, games and applications that were too important for me just because I thought this would set everything straight and I'll have my wireless connection back but again I got nothing out of it. You won't believe what actually the solution was. It was just a combination of the Function key and the Print Screen key that solved my problem. Earlier than this I used to have a wireless receiver to use the wifi as the inbuilt wifi was not working but this key combination enabled it and now I don't need any external wifi receiver to access the internet.

Challenge - RFID reader + Wifi Module Low Cost.

Hi Guys,I'm an Oracle Architect and I have one customer that want to monitor water dispenser, he wants to know if water bottle was changed. I have a software to control it, but actually the people need to input this data manually and I would like one solution to do it automatically. I'm thinking to use RFID Reader on water dispenser and paste passive tag on water bottle and with this I'll receive the information and this data must to be send using wifi, I can't have cable in this solution (data and power cable is not possible). In my investigation, I just find rfid reader (UHF) able read a passive tag in 1 meters distance, the issue is, the UHF module is very expensive, I saw UHF module for 40 USD and I need something more cheaper. Is there another way to do it? I need suggestions and help to developer it.If need more info, send me email.Regards, Haysar Lelis

Turn your instructable into an animated video

Hello Community, I have been kicking around the idea of making an Instructable about how to turn an Instructable into an animated video/presentation. It made me start to wonder how many people would be interested in doing this. If there is considerable demand, then I would be more than happy to move forward. I have been making animated videos for almost a year now. It is something that I REALLY enjoy doing so I am looking for more opportunities to offer my services to others and possibly make a little money on the side. My grandmother always told us that the key to a career is finding something that you love to do and then figuring out how to make money doing it. I found something that I love to do so now I am curious about whether there were others on this site that would be interested in having this service done for them. I am also looking for 1 outstanding Instructable that I can turn into a animated video/presentation for FREE. This will give me an opportunity to show the community what I can do. If you have an Instructable of your own that you would like to submit or have come across a great one that you want to recommend, please let me know. Here is an example of my work for anyone that may be interested. All feedback is welcome. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

ATC 1000 Helmet Camera -- On the riggers

I let a friend of mine borrow the ATC 1000 helmet camera from the Magnet Challenge... I also let him use my 256MB SD card -- so he was able to get about 12 minutes of video at best quality outside(high contrast = less recording time). He started it really early - so he did not get the whole race but there's still some cool stuff on there (I edited out about 8 minutes). For a digital camera, it's not the best -- but it's pretty good for it's size and weight. And it handled the partially wet conditions like a champ :)He attached the camera to the riggers (the part that supports the oar) on their shell (aka the boat). The white box thingie is a speaker to help out the coxswain (the person yelling commands, encouragement and counting off).Video is cut short - but you get to see them start off in their power 10. At one point you can hear them catch their rhythm and everything makes nice sounds :PVideo is not as good a quality as the raw footage (too big to upload :P). I think this convinced my buddy to find one of these cameras too :P

Battery pack rebuild

I read the instructable on rebuilding the 14.4v cordless tool battery pack and I've done it before with a decent Milwaukee battery. Now I have one that the thermistor is shot. It said 6k8j on it. It was a disc like an advil pill with two leads. Where would I find a replacement? I've looked on digikey.com but can't make heads or tails of it. I imagine you would want it to stop charging at 70 degrees c like a lot of r/c packs do.

"image not available" in instructables; thumbnails won't enlarge

I can't see any of the main pics in any instructable, and the thumbnails won't enlarge. In many, I can't tell if it is something I want to do, or to save, because the images are  not there and the thumbnails are too small. When I download it to my PDF files, the images are there, but at that point I  may decide this one is not for me. Then I have to delete it. Too much trouble just to see if an instructable is one that I want to keep, or even to mark it a favorite. Thanks, Jo

wiring a dpdt switch like a dpst switch

I need a DPST rotary switch so that i can turn on two circuits at once but the closest i've been able to find with appropriate ratings is a DPDT switch, is it possible to wire it up to my circuits in such a way that it works like a DPST switch? I've attached an example diagram i found of a DPDT switch, if i was to disconnect the lamp from pin 1 and the buzzer from pin 2 would the first position of the switch become Off and the second position become On powering the LED and speaker? also assuming that the LED and speaker only connected back to their respective batteries and not to each other, could i attach a low voltage battery to pin 3 for the LED and a higher voltage battery to pin 4 for the speaker without causing damage?

I don't like the new popup bar to add instructables to my favorites

I use firefox and couldn't find a way to add an instructable to my favorites so that I can find it later. I tried with chrome and it was not apparent there either. Eventually I found that I could scroll down a bit and a bar would pop up and from there I could add to favorites and do other things. Why have this silly pop up bar that only pops up when you scroll the page to just the right spot? The buttons really don't take up that much room, just put them back on the page.

Problem - Reusing an image from the Library and editing it's tag edits all Instructables using that image

I don't know if this has always been this way, or it might be new, but I just noticed something that for me is a big issue.Sometimes I reuse images from my graphic library of images I've previously uploaded to Instructables for use in other tutorials. That sounded like a great feature. However, I just noticed that if I use the same image in two or more instructables (selected from the library), if I edit the text boxes in one, it modifies the text boxes in all of the images. What a disaster! Now I have no idea of what Instructables I've screwed up in the past thanks to this. Sometimes I might want an image for one reason, and later I might want to use it to call out a whole different issue. Please consider correcting this. I thought the point of the library was to avoid uploading duplicate content to Instructables servers. Now I'll have to upload the same image as many times as I need to reuse it, since by default I intend to use different call-out boxes (or however they are called on them). If I'm getting this wrong, and this bug is actually a feature, please let me know how I am interpreting this issue the wrong way

GE Microwave Makes Humming Sound with Smell

My GE microwave (JE1860SB 002) made a cracking sound and stopped working. After some research, I removed the cover and checked the fuse and it was good. I then checked the thermal flame/sensor and discovered it was burned out. I replaced the thermal flame/sensor and now the unit comes on but makes a loud humming sound and has a burnt smell. The next step (according to my research) is checking the diode (cable) which is attached to the capacitor. It appears I need to discharge the capacitor before proceeding? --- BEFORE replacing the sensor, the unit had been unplugged for over one week….AFTER replacing the sensor, the unit was plugged in for about 5 minutes on Jan 25, 2018.- What is the best/safest way to discharge the capacitor? Is an insulated screw driver or pliers needed or will a rubber handle tool work considering the time it has been unplugged? (Capacitor pictured below) - Should I remove the two connecting wires and diode before attempting to discharge the capacitor? - If the diode is bad should I still check the Magnetron? - If the diode is good, what is the next item to check/test?

Status update (Update: Barackuda soon to post)

Hey, peoples. I'm rather sad to see the community dying but I figured I'll cling on a little longer, try to spark some more activity if possible. I see people still posting instructions, so that's good. Just wish we'd keep more discussion going on the forums. Anyway, a couple things: Just to show what I have around, I tried to make something after my Barackuda but didn't end up going anywhere. I just wanted to have something around, so I remade and improved my SMRI model. This version was designed solely for looks based off my last version. I couldn't really be bothered to try making this one shoot. It still uses Red's stock because I couldn't think of a better design at the time. Anywho, this wasn't meant to be the impressive bit, just something to show while yabbering. =P With the Barackuda and the SMRI, I realized that I'm still limited in a few pieces. I desperately need more dark greys, oranges, and black hands. I also realized I feel bad destroying guns and never keeping them around so that I can build new ones. I figure I might as well build my collection up so I can keep more guns around. So I've ordered more pieces. I'll get them probably some time early next week. I'm hoping to build something right away. I'm thinking of revisiting my Barackuda to see if I can improve the trigger and feed ramp. I might redesign it entirely. I'm hoping to attempt a repeating slingshot of some form at some point too. But it's an area I've never worked in before so I might get discouraged pretty quick. I dunno, I need to try actually building these ideas I have sitting in my head for years. I'll post more in here once I get the pieces and start building something. Update 2/19/16: I'm mostly finished with my new version of the Barackuda. I filled in the empty gaps on the rods of the magazine to make it fuller looking. The trigger -should- work better now but I just noticed it struggles to set when it's still pulled back while cocking. I suspect I just need a better band setup to resolve this, otherwise it works fine when you manually push the trigger forward. Last, the stock was changed entirely to give the bolt a rail to glide inside of with a solid bolt stop right after the trigger engages, allowing for a quick and smooth action. The handle connection is also more sturdy, so the stock is surprisingly rigid. Overall I'm much more pleased with this version, as long as I can figure out the trigger bands this might be posted. I'll begin working on yet another remake of the UMP soon. Update 11/9/16: Man, the year sure flew by. I apologize for never really getting around to posting the Barackuda before. This time I think I've finally gotten over my perfectionism. I've adjusted the stock to keep the same track design but attached it differently and otherwise made the rest of the stock use less pieces. I've figured out a (I think) new pair of K'nex sights more precise than our usual chunky ones, not that it'll help much. The trigger and back of the gun has been adjusted to block the pin further back, hopefully improving range slightly. The front of the gun was made more compact and flat at the bottom to allow potential changes to the front of the magazine in the future. It also makes muzzle loading much easier in tandem with the new ramp. The ramp is also simpler, more consistent, and hopefully offers better range than my other ones. Finally, the magazine has been adjusted to be easier to load and hopefully more reliable. I'd finally say this is a practical war weapon alternative. I'll post this...hopefully sooner rather than later. This time I mean it.

Stepper Motor Controller Problem

I recently set up an Arduino Uno, stepper controller, stepper motor, and power supply. Connected the motor to a shaft on a device I`m making and was able to turn the shaft as I wanted. The controller was a TB6600 that I borrowed from a friend. Received 3 new controllers from Ebay and swapped the new one for the borrowed one. Tried all 3 controllers and none worked. Any ideas on what`s wrong or should I just return them and buy 3 more from someone else?

The new interface just made this website much worse.

What is it these days, it's like a competition that big websites want to change their visual design just for the sake of change even though the previous design was extremely clear and functional, and recently more often than not, the new design is a downgrade. Why fix something that wasn't broken? Now everything is less intuitive, you can't find anything, you have to do a lot more scrolling, and having to look at that makes your eyes sore sooner, you just want to quit. I get it that you're all obsessed with trying to make everything look like mobile phone UIs but it's a terrible idea: we're not all that obsessed with phones, plenty of us still prefer a proper computer because its large display allows us to see more things at the same time so there's no need to scroll to and fro and you can make connections between a lot of things simultaneously.Having to scroll through a lot of material because you can only see very little at a time is extremely counterproductive when you're trying to grasp the holistic picture of something, work on something that requires working memory. Using a phone UI on proper computer displays is an absolute nightmare and makes you want to not use websites that waste your time with the hide and seek game and sense-irritating visuals. It helps a little bit if I downsize the font of the entire page by several notches but because everything gets smaller, the texts that were small to begin with, will get too small, and that still doesn't fix the unintuitive randomness of how the page is composed now.I'd really appreciate it if users could at least choose which "skin" or UI to use for the site so it would be accessible to everyone.

Treadmill DC Motor Control

Hi all,I have been given a treadmill motor by a friend, sadly none of the control boards have come with it, just the motor and a transformer bolted to the same bracket.I'm hoping someone can tell me the best way for a layman to hook this up for variable speed, as I would like to improve on my 1/4hp single phase motor currently attached to my lathe.I don't know much about the motor and could not find a datasheet, but a pic is attached. Is there any plug and play options that don't cost the earth, ideally i would like to be able to plug it into the mains (UK) and just control with a pot.As always thanks in advance, you guys make this place a great resource for us noobs.
