Clay Contest Criteria

I have a question about the Clay contest criteria....debating whether to do an instructable for a DIY downdraft kiln vent for under $50 (cf $450-600 to buy) that I built. I've actually been waiting for the clay contest before publishing, however the contest criteria says:  "For the purpose of this contest, any project that uses a moldable, malleable, clay-like product will be eligible." So question is, would a kiln vent be eligible? Previous contest criteria has been "all things" related to said topic, but this seems more narrow in scope. Obviously a kiln vent is not made with clay, but it certainly fits the pottery topic. What to the contest gurus say?

The Long-Term Viability of Solid-State Storage?

The following is a hypothetical (for now...): What Is The Long-Term Viability of Solid-State Storage? So, what does that mean? Well, I am asking about the viability and chances of data or hardware corruption of solid state storage if left in a relatively clean environment for...say...100 years, would it last? More specifically, if it were a boot drive, would it still boot? I am sure some of you will have viable alternatives to solid-state for this purpose I have not considered, which is why I am asking publically. I am trying to ensure the safety of important data over long-term (100+ years) storage and usage. Are there any recommendations/issues or alternatives any of you can think of which would decrease the chances of data loss over such a time?

Converting G clamps or similar to a bench vice?

Looking to make some stuff but don't really have access to a workshop. Not so much of a problem tool wise, all I really need as a drill and a hacksaw, but will definitely be needing a medium size bench vice. Don't have one, can't afford one. So was thinking to somehow convert one or two G clamps or something similar. Was wondering if there's any existing resources or tutorials on how to do this, just so I don't unnecessarily reinvent any wheels. ta.

If anyone has any ideas please respond because I can not finish this project until I get the lights to work and I don't want to go wasting money buying stuff in the wrong places. I will also include a link to the ebay page where I bought the lights. Another thing is I have done research and cant find what the amps they draw are.

can some one tell what is the voltage (ac and dc both )In a phone line? Answered

I have a DMM but it is of low quality so i assume may be my readings were wrong ... i found out to be 50V DC (when knob was at DC) and a Vrms of 110V when i turned my DMM's knob to AC ... even when the phone was not ringing is my method of finding the voltage right? can someone check what is the actual voltage in a phone line part 2 if the voltage is 50v Dc then when i connect a resistor it is lowered to 16V and if the resistor is 240 ohm then it is more lowered to 8V  what possibly the reason could be ? and when an led is attached directly to 50V it glows BUT theoretically it should Blow up. any idea whats going on ?

LEDs - Under-volt, over-amped?

My issue: Have multiple LED drivers, (high power LED instructable) and connected the wrong one. The LEDs are not dead. My LEDs are rated at 9-12v, 950mA and I have sets of 4 in series hooked up to a 36v power supply. The driver I used has a .3ohm resistor on it. so it's putting out ~1.3A The LEDs should have burned up. Since the driver eats up a little of the voltage, each LED is getting ~8.75v. Is this why they haven't burned up? Thanks!!

How would you make a glass speaker?

I saw an article on Dvice.com that shows speakers made with glass plates as the "cone", standing vertical.  I imagine that the coil pushes against the glass somehow, and vibrates it, creating the sound waves.  I'm curious as to how to replicate this effect, and was wondering if anyone had ideas as to how they would make one... (I'm thinking of attaching a magnet to the face of the glass and letting the horizontal/ lateral push of the voice coil make the sound...  basically, the forces of the coil are perpendicular to the orientation of the glass plate, which is standing upright)

Compact bubble gun mechanism?

My 7yo was begging for a bubble gun, and I promised I'd 3d print him one.  To my surprise, there are very few 3d printable bubble machine designs around, and none that match what he wants.  (He wants it to have a handle and trigger like a handgun.)  So, I suppose I'll be designing one. . . (FYI - My parts bin has plenty of fans and motors and even small liquid pumps and I am competent at 3d design. ) My challenge is that the basic rotating disk method of wetting the bubble hoops is both too bulky for a handgun-style bubble shooter, and is highly spill-able. I see online there are numerous toy bubble guns that look like what I want and appear to be much less spill-able.  However, I can't figure out from the pictures how they work, beyond that there is a pump that sends bubble solution to above the hoop and a funnel to route the excess back into the container.  How does the bubble solution get swiped across the hoop reliably? (And, yes, I know it would be easier and cheaper to just buy one.  That's not the point.)

How fast can you spin your Golf Ball?

I played around with some balls placed into the airstream of a little blower. Everything light enough just "danced" in the air like being hold on invisible strings. But not so much the golf ball! You would expect those dimples are good for reducing air friction but do they also offer stability in some cases by making the ball spin? Check this video I recorded while playing - to me it looks like with a proper nozzle there is even more speed possible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=014QkXuTL0o How fast can you make it spin?

Electric Lawnmower tripping circuit-breaker, Motor still runs.

I know you folks must have seen this question many times, but I still have to ask: my electric lawnmower tripped the circuit breaker (I suspect due to excessively long grass), and kept tripping it after I reset the breaker. The weird thing about it is that each time I reset the breaker and restart the lawnmower, the motor would actually start and run for half a second, before the breaker trips again. I infer that means the motor itself is not shot, and possibly not the rectifier either? Can anyone help with this? Thanks in advance!?

Has anyone any advice on building a Faraday cage for VHF - 20GHz or higher?

Hi, I've found lots on the 'net about building Faraday cages, but most of these are a couple of years old and targeted at lower frequencies up to around around the 2.4GHz range. I'm looking at making a Faraday cage for a room, to shield against a recent phone tower upgrade with transmissions now in the 19GHz range. (I've seen some other towers, fortunately not near me, recently approved for transmissions at 38GHz.) From what I've read so far, I'd need about 20 layers of heavy duty alfoil to come close to getting effective shielding, or wire with holes less than 7.5mm wide, which is going to be pretty tricky. Just wondering if anyone's tackled this problem before and, if so, how?

Can I transmit video from one mobile phone to another via Bluetooth connection?

Because I have 20 or so old mobile phones that are perfectly functional, though very outdated, I want to use them for something. I previously had an idea to extend the phone's camera wires so I could use it for a remote camera on a tether, but found no real way of doing such because they all use ribbon cables. Also, I was told voltage drop would cause it to malfunction. Now, my newer idea, for example, would be to mount a camera phone (we'll call it phone 1) to the rear window of my car and transmit the video via bluetooth to a phone mounted to my dash (and he will be phone 2) and allow the two phones to act as a rear mounted camera system. So basically phone 1 at the rear of the car would bluetooth transmit his video feed to the dash mounted phone 2 where I could  just have to glance down in order to see better behind me. This video, plus mirrors should make it pretty easy to know what/who awaits my rear-ward travelling destruction! The phone I carry everyday is an Android phone, so maybe there is an application available for download to allow another phone to connect to it in this way? I have had no luck with searching for one, but I'm not sure if anyone else here happens to know of one. I don't need to record the video, I just want to view the video from another phone in real time. Also, I am aware backup cameras can be had for next to nothing, but I want to try and find a use for some of the old mobile phones I have. I prefer to recycle them for a cool project like this if possible. Thanks for reading!
