Is there any reason you can't keep a small floor safe on its back or side permanently?

I have a small fire safe that I want to secure, but the anchor hole is on the bottom and I have no way to secure it to the floor (apartment). I do have a way to anchor it to the wall, however.  Is there any reason I couldn't leave it permanently laying on its side or back, rather than upright like normal? Might be a stupid question, but I don't want to risk damage to an expensive unit. Thanks.

LCD cable (LVDS?) Question

Hey guys, so I am in the process of *attempting* to repurpose my old laptop lcd into a video monitor.  More specifically, I am trying to replace an old home built video monitor lcd that was broken with my working laptop LCD.  When it comes to this sort of thing I would barely call myself a hobbyist. Left over from my original home built monitor I have is the LCD controller, and I am planning (hoping) to use that in order to drive the laptop LCD.  I have gotten power working (it was a snap), but here is the problem I have run into and don't really know how to solve. The laptop cable for video (in searching around I guess it's an LVDS cable) is differently shaped/designed as to what the controller requires (and the cable for the old broken LCD won't work on my working LCD.  So here is where I require help.  I have posted 2 pictures, the first one is the lvds cable that plugs into the display, and the second is of the controller connection.  They are both 30 pin connectors (although only 12 pins are in use my laptop lcd) so I really don't see why given the correct cable/adapter I shouldn't be able to get this to work. If anyone knows where I can get such a cable, or at least what the respective cable plugs are called (so I can search on my own) I would appreciate it very much.  Also, if I am a fool for attempting to do this, and I am missing some important piece of information that makes what I want to do impossible, I will appreciate that type of info as well!

How can I make a hollow, see-through sphere? Answered

This is for an adaptation of a lamp. What I want is to cover the bulb with a large (little smaller than a basketball) sphere, so there will be a hole in one end. Light obviously needs to be able to shine through. My first thought was a resin of some sort, and a quick search led me to epoxy resin. Is this see-through? Can colour be added? Any other ideas? Some early thoughts: - In an inflated balloon, inject liquid. Rotate, thereby distributing fairly evenly, until liquid hardens. Cons: How long do I have to rotate this balloon? What if it pops!? (Could use a hard container...) - Double boiler: Use two similar bowls, small inside larger, fill in between. Cons: How to get it even? Smaller bowl would float (weigh it down...) Not even close to a sphere With your suggestions I'll do a few trials, possibly put out an instructable if something works. All suggestions are welcome (even if they deviate a little). Thanks!

Fiber optic cable to laser projector? Answered

I purchased a "Mr. Christmas" Laser (green) Outdoor Holiday Projector to add to my holiday lighting this year. Being rightly concerned with theft if I was naive enough to leave the projector outside, I thought of using fiber optic cable attached to the laser lens housing (still haven't worked out how I would accomplish that), and routing it from inside the house to a point outiside where the cable end would project on a wall or my garage door, providing a show (sans sound), but protecting the laser projector from theft. Is my idea feasible? If not, I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.

Can you capture the data from a radar gun?

Hi, here's my project, I want to create a device that could capture data from a radar gun and be translated into say microsoft excel. Then I could find average speeds, time of day when people speed the most, things like that. I've have some programming knowledge, a little circuitry know-how and i'm wondering if there were any guides out there that could help? I've been looking around but no luck.  I was looking to buy a cheap toy radar gun and capture the data, perhaps using an arduino and then translate the data in excel. if all else fails, I may look into using an arduino with 2 IR outputs. set them a known distance away and measure the time it took to trip the second one after the first one.. thus giving the velocity. If theres any help on this project that would be great. I'm so interested in these kinds of projects I want try to fiddle with my own.

Electric lawn mower starts up as soon as it is plugged in. Needs new start button? Answered

Hello everyone, I have a Kobalt electric lawnmower that initially stopped working after I cut grass that was too high. I searched this forum and found out what I needed to do - replace the rectifier.  I was very excited! I replaced it and now when I plug the mower in, it starts as soon as the wires are connecting. I do not need to push the button and lift the handle in order for it to start as one normally does. In other words, it seems the start button is now malfunctioning. I am thinking that all my attempts to start the mower when the rectifier was not functioning , and me tripping the circuit breaker, etc. somehow damaged the start button. However, I don't know. So, my question is is it bad for the mower to start right up like that? Also, does it sound like it could be the start box up by the top or is it possibly something else? I would appreciate any ideas someone has.

Will a 240 Volt AC Motor Operate on 120 Volts AC

I need to know if a 240 volt ac squirrel cage fan motor can be safely run on 120 volts ac. An quick internet search reveals several sources that all say no, but I am concerned that the people answering the question don't know what they are talking about - as is often the case on the internet. I know there are a lot of want-to-be engineers out there ready to answer any question posed even when they have no experience or knowledge of the issue. Please do not guess at this or offer some unsubstantiated opinion.  I need a real answer to this question. Here is what I do know about this issue from researching a couple of electrical engineering sites. Lowering the motor input voltage by 50 % does several things. 1) The motor will run slower. 2) The torque developed will drop to about 25% of its full voltage rating.  3) This decrease in torque can make the motor stall when trying to start under a heavy load. 4) There may be drastic speed fluctuations due to load variations.  5) The motor current will double if the load remains constant. I can understand how these issues could cause severe problems in some applications, but perhaps not in the application I am looking at. I want to use a squirrel cage motor rated at 1/20 HP, 240 volts, 0.5 amp in a direct drive fan application. Here is how I am looking at this issue: - I need to reduce the fan speed so the speed reduction is a good thing in my application. - I have test run the motor on 120 volts for about an hour and there is plenty of torque to operate the fan. I figure at the lower speed there is less air load on the fan blades so less torque is required. Again a good thing for this application. The is no heavy load at start up and the motor seems to have plenty of starting torque for the fan. The fan does not reach full speed as fast as it does on 240 volts, but it still does so in about 4 to 5 seconds so this shouldn't be an issue either. Since it is a fan moving air and not some machine moving gears and levers the load is constant so the speed does not fluctuate at all. Again this should not be a problem. The possibility of the motor current increasing is my only concern so far and apparently it is not an issue since a test run showed the current decreased from 0.5 amps at 240 volts to 0.4 amps at 120 volts. That is a significant current drop instead of the predicted increase. Since this is a fan, I think the current decreases because the load decreases with the lower speed. For these reasons and based on my apparently successful test run I think the motor will operate fine on the decreased voltage. However, I am not sure how to factor the motor slip into this. Slip is the difference between the synchronous and asynchronous speed of an induction motor. From what I have read the slip will increase dramatically when the voltage is cut in half, but I am not sure what physical affect that will have on the motor. If you know what effect that will have or know of some other factor I am not catching please let me know.

Led Lightbulb for r7s socket or how to repurpose from rs7 to gu10 or other sockets

I have some nice wall lights but mounting R7S bulbs. These are halogen and of course use a lot of electricity. I have looked everywhere for a compatible LED lightbulb but the problem with all the ones available is that they are designed to fit floodlights, ie. they take too much space and cannot be fit if your socket is a small linear r7s. Attached example of the led bulb shows that behind the connectors the casing takes too much space and this is what is stopping me from using these lightbulbs. Also u can see my lamp and how tight the space is behind the halogen bulb So questions 1 - do you know where i can find such a lightbulb with no space or very little space behind connectors ? or 2 - any instructions on how i can repurpuse the current lamps by replacing the current R7S socket with something else?  I dont know much about electrics so i wanted to get a understanding with a step by step process so that i dont blow myself up. pls notice this forum images are not getting saves so here is a link to a album to the wall lamp images

How do i go about charging a small lead acid battery (7Ah)? is this method ok? Answered

Regarding charging a sealed lead acid battery, can i just apply a 12v wall wart at an amperage around a tenth of the rated Ah? i.e. 12v 700mA for a 7Ah battery (for what, 10hours?) in context i'm looking at making some computer speakers (2.1) portable with a battery such as: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/YUASA-fire-intruder-alarm-battery-12v-7Ah-lead-acid_W0QQitemZ290422260055QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_AudioElectronicsVideo_Video_TelevisionSetTopBoxes?hash=item439e840157i know these may not be suitable for deep cycle charging/draining, does this use count? and will i be damaging it with 12V constant even if i take off charge once i have worked out the time to charge it for? (dividing the amp-hours by the amp rating of the wall charger gives the number of hours right?) any help possible would be great, i want to get this project rolling and of course ill post it up here!?

What equipment is needed to fill an appropriate cylinder with oxygen generated by the electrolysis of water?

Update: I need someone that has experience with gas cylinders to point out potential dangers that would be present by filling this way, We've already discussed water vapor and oil potentially making its way inside. That doesn't sound good to me so I need certainty that its safe or those can be eliminated or reduced to safe levels. Right now I would really like to know what I need so I can refill tanks myself. I'm guessing its a special adapter or replacement valve, but I don't know where to start Original: Would it be possible to fill an appropriate oxygen tank with the right adapters/compression system with the oxygen generated by electrolyzing water and what kind of equipment would be needed? I know for propane you can buy adapters and refill/transfer from one to another, but obviously this is completely different, and I don't know anything about oxygen valves/adapters or compression systems. Yes I know this could potentially be very dangerous and also have no interest in collecting the hydrogen. Just to clarify we are talking about commercial grade tanks, not a 2 liter soda bottle. Also, if possible how high of purity would be expected using optimal electrodes and electrolytes to prevent corrosion and impurities. Any information at all would be very helpful.

Power requirement for arduino with 4 servos?

Right now I have an arduino (power being supplied by a 9v battery) controlling 4 servos (using 4 digital pins). The servos are connected to a breadboard and are acquiring power from four AA batteries (essentially a 6v battery). However, I cannot figure out how much current the motors are drawing, nor how long these batteries will last. I don't know if the robot I'm building should use AA, C, or D batteries. Any ideas of a better method will be worthy of support and consideration. Looking for big tansformer cores for high frequency use... Answered

Although I have made more and more progress with my home made ferrite I am not in the need for a big transformer core for testing purposes. Desired frequency range: 30-120kHz Required power: 2kW I looked through endless pages of theoretical science stuff, a lot of useless online listings and thought: Why not do what everyone does instead of using Google and ask my friends here? ;) So far I think an iron powder core might be better in this case than the more traditional ferrite cores due to the power and saturation levels. But what size would I really need so the  whole thing won't saturate or overheat? Ring core or better a pot core?

Possible to build a Powered PA Speaker myself?

I am a musician, so I've been talking about guitar amplifiers, tubes, microphones and all kinds of gear for over 20 years. I have zero experience with building anything that involves electronics. I'm not a dummy. I know Ohm's law, and I believe I can handle the physics of electronics, no problem. I just do not know where to start. Schematics for power audio amplifiers? Where does one find them, and how do you read schematics. These are the things I need to know.  Let me preface this by saying... I do not expect to build a top-of-the-line PA speaker. I don't even expect to build something that would be considered crappy. I just want to know the theory, and where to start. Anyone got any help? Thanks!
