Friendship Lamp

You may have seen these online selling for ridiculous priceshttps://www.uncommongoods.com/product/long-distanc...But it occured to me how easy this would probably be on arduino. Do any of you know what would be the bare minimum you would need to get this to work? I would assume you'd need them to connect to wifi, and just send a simple signal but I'm not quite sure how to implement this. Any ideas from those more knowledgeable in the particulars? Thanks,

I can download PDF's as a free member

I've been here since April of 2009, and I've stayed updated to what the site in general has been doing. Ever since the "pro" account launch, I've kept reading over and over that you can't download a PDF as a free member and that only "Pro" members have access to this feature. I, however, could still download PDF's w/ out having to sign up for a "Pro" account. Are there exceptions for old-in-a-way members or something? I'm just curious as to why this is so...

Trying to find kit to power motor will wall A/C

I am sure this has been asked about a thousand times in a hundred places but I can't seem to get the search terms right to find these other questions.I want to get a 3-5 HP induction motor for a table mounted tool. Is there such a thing as a pre-made kit to allow me to power it with wall current? Any idea where I could buy such a thing? I am based in the USA and want to use a 120 outlet. I want to do it as safely as possible, so finding something not homemade by my own amateur self would make me happy. Obviously no kit would fit all possible motors, but I know enough to make sure I match the requirements of any kit.I appreciate any help and advice!-Ben

Armtronix 4 Relay ESP32 board

I have received 4 Relay ESP32 based wifi board.I am referring the instruction on GitHub to setup the device. As I power on the device I see the wifi source with Armtronix-xxxxxx as mentioned in the pdf document. However I do not see that visible every time. It some times appear and as I try to configure by clicking submit button, it just goes off. I have not modified default jumper positions. Also I do not see any explanation about jumper positions in the document Question:2 Normal ESP32 dev kit, we can connect using micro usb cable and connect to the board using ming32 shell. I tried connecting but it does not connect, is it possible to connect this way or always have to use the Arduino IDE only?Even after multiple restart I do not see it and some times it suddenly appear briefly. Appreciate any one has any clue about it? /Hp

I know that some GENIUS will tell me how to do this!

Okay, so I am building a CNC router table. To hold down the material to be routed, I want to use VACUUM instead of screws and clamps, so they will not be in the way of the router bit as it cuts the material. Various sizes of material will be placed onto the 60"x120" cutting area.I want to make the top surface of the vac table out of pegboard, or some other perforated board. It will be replaced occasionally, as the router will score the top surface when it cuts completely through the material. The challenge: Find a way to close off each individual hole (or bank of holes?) that is not covered by the material, so that no matter what size or shape is placed onto the pegboard, ONLY the holes beneath the material will be open to allow the vacuum to hold down the material. All other holes will be closed by a reed, or a flap, or some other means.I know NOTHING about Arduino, but I know you guys are the ones who can find a solution.Possible scenarios I imagine:1. Pegboard holes are 1/4" round and 1" spaced both vertically and horizontally. A square slightly larger is placed beneath four holes. It rotates on a center pin. When CLOSED, each corner of the square closes one of the four holes. When OPEN, the square is rotated 45 degrees, opening four holes for suction. 2. Banks of holes (perhaps four or six in a row?) are covered by a strip that slides. When CLOSED, the holes are covered and block air passage. When OPEN the six holes in the strip align with the six holes in the pegboard, allowing those six holes to provide hold down suction. Can you think of a good way to do this?Joe

Tango card OR actual prize items? What is sent to winning contestants from outside of the US?

Hey everyone :)I am from India and was reading through all the fine print rules and regulations for contests. It is stated that contestants outside of the US are given tango cards with currency equivalent of the prize value. However, on further digging, I found posts here asking about import duty, etc. for the items being shipped to India, UK, Canada, etc. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any recent posts and was wondering what the current scenario is. It would be great if someone could let me know about the same!

Pi 3 Displaytech issues

Hi I'm currently making a project involving a Displaytech 204A 20x4 LCD display. I've have followed several guides and made my own changes but I am not getting any text on the screen when I run the program. I'm using test code as follows: from RPLCD.gpio import CharLCD from RPi import GPIO lcd = CharLCD(cols=20, rows=4, pin_rs=15, pin_rw=18, pin_e=16, pins_data=[21, 22, 23, 24], numbering_mode=GPIO.BOARD) lcd.write_string(‘Hello world’) I have a 10K pot resistor for the contrast (LCD pin 3), and have tried several different resistors and pots on pin 15 but to no avail. There isn't any backlighting too it seems. Everything is wired up as it should (I believe) with the GPIO pins matching the code, could it be a difference in the display? I have checked the datasheet and the LCD pins do match up with the model used in the guide. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Wanting to dye orange-wheat work boots black but not sure what material they're made of

They look like knock off Timberlands or those typical construction work boots. They're not a brand I've heard of (ShoeVibe "Tan Fly Ankle Boot") so I'm having a hard time even finding the manufacturer online and only finding out of stock retail options. It's definitely not leather and it doesn't appear to be faux suede. The description on a site I found said "man made" upper and lining. I'm basically just wondering if I could use black shoe polish to dye them or if I need to actually dig deeper into this material thing and get shoe dye.

Website-BUG: Login-Cookie-Handling over multiple PCs with feed

I had this problem in the past sporadically but never saw a pattern till recently:I come to instructables.com, i am already logged in and click on "feed" at the top. After a while an error pops up telling me a Rerouting-error happened. (Umleitungsfehler in German). I noticed, this always happens after the following action-pattern: - I visit instructables.com and log in on computer A and i DONT log out there but only close the browse. - I visit instructables.com on computer B. I am seemingly already signed in from the last visit here on Computer B at instructables.com. - If i now click feed (On Computer B), the error happens. - If i logout and log back in on Computer B, the error is gone on this computer B, even over Firefox-restarts As far as i undestand, as soon as i log in on computer A, a new login-cookie is created on Computer A and the cookie on Computer B will no longer be valid next time. Now, if i come to instructables with computer B, the cookie somehow still is interpreted valid and logs me in (I appear to be logged in with my avatar visible at the top right). However, if i want to go to my feed, it seems Instructables checks again the cookie and figures out that i have a no longer valid login-cookie on this Computer B due to my login on Computer A and refuses to redirect me to my feed. This gets sorted with Re-Log on Computer B, creating a NEW login-cookie on Computer B and all is well again on Computer B. Now i can play the same game on Computer A with re-log. :) I hope, this error-report helps you guys in pinpointing and fixing an issue with a Login-bug as it seems And Why to hell do i have to define in which channel this belongs and you dont have a channel "website of Instructables"?!? I hope this is not lost in "Circuits" - "Software" which was the closest i could find to a website-problem... Geez...

Automated Garage Door Timer

I have the bad habit of leaving my garage door open sometimes. To come home with your garage wide open is pretty scary. So I was thinking of this idea...  The garage automatically closes after 5 minutes. But that's pretty annoying so I figured you could install a switch underneath the garage door opener that will leave the garage door open. Any ideas on how this could be done or more suggestions? Thanks!

Electric Mower will not start, trips the breaker?

I have a Task Force model #25143 electric mower (corded) that suddenly stopped while I was cutting some grass that I admit was probably too tall.  I have had no previous problems with it whatsoever since I bought it new last year.  After some searching I found out that it had tripped the breaker (was plugged into the GFI outside the house).  It's only a short cord--an extension must be used.  I bought a new one last month, but tried two other ones just to be sure--no change.  I tried using a different outlet--no change.  I tried using an inside outlet and promptly tripped that breaker as well.  I checked the blade, it spins freely, there was a small amount of grass on the shaft above it, I removed that.  There was a lot of cut grass on the underside of the deck (it's a mulching mower) and I removed all that going to the side discharge and the chute where the bag would be.  I took off the cover to the motor, there was some grass and dust in there, I cleaned it all out.  As for the connections, they are still clean as a whistle--no rust, corrosion, burning, fraying, etc. they still look new.  I was looking for a fuse and couldn't find one, checked by the motor and in the handle where the switch is.  After all this it still trips the breaker so I'm thinking there has got to be a short. The plug side of the extension cord was warm.  I found an answer that said use a multi-meter and I suppose I could go buy one but then what do I do with it?  I don't know what I'm supposed to hook it to and I don't know what any of the readings would mean.  I'm too low on cash now to pay for repair or buy a new one and where I live the grass needs to be cut almost 2x a week--any advice?  How can I find the short or is the motor gone?  I also read about motor "brushes" but don't think I saw any not that I would know what they look like anyway.  I included pics of the switch and the motor.

How to judge the quality of PCB

After the circuit board design is completed, it needs to be output to the board factory for processing production, patching, and assembly. In the face of fierce competition in the market, the cost of PCB circuit board materials is also rising. More and more manufacturers are monopolizing the market at low prices in order to improve their core competitiveness. However, behind these ultra-low prices, they are obtained by reducing material costs and process manufacturing costs. However, devices are often prone to cracks (cracks), easy scratches (or scratches), and their comprehensive factors such as precision and performance have not reached the standard. , Which seriously affects the solderability and reliability of the product used.In the face of a variety of PCB circuit boards on the market, distinguishing the quality of the PCB circuit board can be started from two aspects; the first method is to judge from the appearance, and the other is to judge from the quality requirements of the PCB itself. The method to judge the quality of the PCB circuit board: First: distinguish the quality of the circuit board from the appearance. Generally, the appearance of the PCB circuit board can be analyzed and judged through three aspects; 1. Light and color. The external circuit board is covered with ink, and the circuit board can play the role of insulation. If the color of the board is not bright, and less ink is used, the insulation board itself is not good.2. Standard rules for size and thickness. The thickness of the circuit board is different from that of the standard circuit board. Customers can measure and check according to the thickness and specifications of their products.3. Weld appearance. Because the circuit board has many parts, if the welding is not good, the circuit board with the parts easy to fall off will seriously affect the welding quality of the circuit board, the appearance is good, and the interface is stronger, which is very important.Second: High-quality PCB circuit boards need to meet the following requirements 1. The copper surface is not easy to oxidize, which affects the installation speed. It will be damaged soon after oxidation;2. It is required that the phone be easy to use after the components are installed, that is, the electrical connection must meet the requirements;3.The copper skin is not easy to fall off under high temperature;4. The line width, thickness, and spacing of the line meet the requirements to prevent the line from heating, opening, and shorting;5.No additional electromagnetic radiation;6.High temperature, high humidity and special environment resistance should also be considered;7, the shape is not deformed, so as not to deform the shell after installation, the screw holes are misaligned. Now it is all mechanized installation, the hole position of the circuit board and the deformation error of the circuit and the design should be within the allowed range;8.The mechanical properties of the surface must meet the installation requirements; The above is the method of judging the quality of the PCB circuit board. When choosing a PCB circuit board, be careful.

New/Stumped/Need Help - Solenoid Simulated Recoil

I have the body of an old Airsoft M4A1 and instead of throwing it away i had the idea of making it have simulated recoil through a solenoid. Now of course i realize that i could never make something with the kick of a real gun but at least something i could feel.(Like the arcade games) I have had some really successful tests with LI-PO batteries but they were all to big and had bad connection spots, and then i tried 6 AA batteries in series with a 1000uF 16v capacitor(I dont know if i am using the right capacitor or if i wired it incorrectly), but my attempts have failed, i am new to circuits and electricity, any thoughts on a power source,or ideas on different angles i could go.P.S.-The solenoid is homemade and is made up of 14g wire (All i had laying around)-And functioned well with a 3.7v 6000mAh Li-Po battery(Recycled from an old portable charger)

One or two tutorials to cover a large build with lots of different skills used?

I've recently been working on a Fallout Pipboy build (see attached photo). For this I scratch build the case out of junk I had in the garage, and then put together the electronics + code to make it "functional". This was a stretch for me and covered a lot of plastic/wood working, along with painting, electronics, coding...I'm wondering if its better to do one (probably large) tutorial on the entire build. Or if its more accessible to break into 2 tutorials - one on the case (which is predominately plastic/modelling) and one on the electronics/coding.Any best practices or recommendations here? Especially as I can see this really being two different categories one for craft/reuse and one circuits/code?thanks!

Repair on a Russian Belarus farm tractor?

Sirs, In 1990 we purchased a new Belarus tractor, made in Russian.  It came equipped with a large front-end loader and really for the most part it has been an economical, dependable tractor.  It has one small flaw, it doesn't like to start in cold weather, hard to believe they use these tractors in Russia.  Anyway my husband solved that problem by installing both a block heater which heats the water & an oil pan heater which of course heats the oil.  Only thing necessary is to either keep it plugged in all the time or plan ahead and plug it in the night before.  Now for my question, the seals on the arms which raise & lower the loader bucket and the ones that tilt the loader bucket are leaking hydraulic fluid.  Can anyone help us in changing the seals.  We ordered and received the necessary parts, but would like help with specific, very detailed step by step instructions to perform the repair.  It is our understanding the repair can be difficult if one is not careful in removing the end caps that hold the hydraulic cylinders.  Also the cylinder caps are external ones & the diameter is 40 mm.  Any and all assistance will be GREATLY appreciated.  Thanks so much, Debra Kay

TV Cabinet lift motor which is best?

Hello EverybodyNew to Instructables and happy to be part of the community. I'm a hobbyist wood and metal worker so this is a new type of project since it requires a little more engineering and electronics that I'm not used to. Currently building a TV cabinet for my master bedroom that will serve as a footboard with a TV lift mechanism. As you can see in the images it's a simple construction of 2 rails with drawer slides an angle iron frame with a rear plate (holds TV) and an 8mm ID pipe that houses an 8mm lead screw attached to a motor at the bottom. At the base of the frame, there is a lead screw nut that will be welded to the frame acting as the contact/lift point for the lift. The frame with tv weighs around 35lbs. My question for the community is what type of motor would work best to handle the following- Weight- Lock into place (or be able to hold the weight)- Needs to be reversable.I looked into stepper motors and gear dc motors but don't know enough about the subject to make an informed decision. Thanks in advance for any help.
