can i fly a very light aircraft with a small lawn mower engine?

I am trying to build an enclosed ultralight aircraft similar to the Cri-Cri made by michael colomban. I think i can make it around 100 or 150 pounds. I have an engine that is somewhere between five and ten horse power. i could possibly get another one of relatively the same amount of power. i have read about the DA-11 made by leeon davis that ran on an 18 hp engine, but is there a way to calculate weight vs. hp so i can be sure it will fly? Grow a plant in my locker?

Currently, this is an idea, and i am simply expanding on it. I had this great idea, mostly as a joke, why not grow a plant in a spare locker? I am currently a high school student that goes to a small school, and have way too much time on my hands. As i was looking at the empty lockers we have from students who left, or even just spares, an idea hit me. Why not put one of these lockers to good use? Why not put a plant inside of it, that can sustain most if not all of itself? Have a gallon of water in there, along with an arduino and a moisture sensor, that would end up watering the plant. I would also have an artificial light source to provide light, preferably LED. The hardest bit is the power. All of this would run off of either a SLA battery or two, or maybe a drill battery. I could swap the battery once every day, which means it would need to go for 24 hours without stopping. That, and the weekends, which would be three full days. I first thought about mushrooms, or other dark growing plants, but i find that boring, lacking a challenge. besides doing this just for jokes, i have also wanted to try out the idea of growing a plant fully indoors without the use of natural sunlight. I have never done this, so please feel free to bombard me with recommendations. Again, this is only an idea. I can only assume it's possible. Also, recommendations on parts and methods would be sweet. Some type of light that can be powered on 12-24v, and run off of a SLA or maybe even a lawnmower battery for minimum of 3 days. Also, plant. I was thinking a tomato plant? Some species that doesn't grow taller than 2.5ft? Anyway, that's the idea. If you guys could help with ideas, provide recommendations, or point me in the correct direction, that'd be sweet. Last note, i would like to keep this cheap. I am not going for some extreme garden or anything. Just a single plant, in a semi-self sustaining locker.

Knitting Machines?

I'm trying to knit a sweater-vest that has a two color repeating design. I'd like to use a knitting machine because I am trying to recreate a sweater-vest from a movie, and it looks like using a knitting machine is the best way to go. I know next to nothing about knitting machines, but I've seen them on eBay and Craigslist for pretty cheap (Like, less than $50.) but I have no idea what I need.  What's a good, cheap, knitting machine? Also, what's the deal with punch cards? I don't really know what they're for. Can someone explain this all to me? Thanks so much, I can't wait to see what responses I get. You guys are awesome.

HELP! Looking for mechanical engineering advice in building a multiplier/compounding gearbox for a hand crank siren project

HELP! I have a project I'm working on that involves making a hand cranked mini air-raid siren utilizing a 12v generator and a 12v siren. I've done a proof of concept rig where I direct wired the siren to the generator and then used a drill to generate enough RPM on the shaft to get the noise I want. Problem is, I'd like to make this entirely manual and will be adding a crank handle once I get the housing built...which means, I need a way to seriously up my RPM. I've done research into building multiplier gear boxes and compound gear trains and pinions and everything in between, but am going to confess that while I'm obsessed with DIY projects, this one is exceeding my engineering knowledge. I am at a loss for how best to approach this build. What ratio would you suggest? 40:1? 50:1? Does anyone have experience building gear boxes that would be ok emailing me with their advice? The input for my generator is a 20 tooth gear (please don't laugh if I'm totally messing up all the nomenclature...most of my life experience comes from writing and baking and a very short (failed) stint as an EE...this is a totally new world for me.) and I got this information from another sub: it’s a 3600 rpm motor so 60/sec. I think the fastest I would want to crank is 2/sec, so, 30:1 gear box sounds about right. With a nice long crank handle a 50:1 should also work nicely. 10:1 is too slow. Ideally (and this might be where it gets really tricky) I'd like it to all fit into a space that's about 5"X3"X3, not including the siren (I can run that further out, using the leads).I'm attaching a photo of the original proof of concept wire up that I did...and don't worry, I know there are exposed wires, I fully plan on isolating the wires, insulating the whole thing and installing the proper resistors. https://imgur.com/a/MaAR2PQ Here is a link to the generator: https://ebay.us/zgAoDQHere is a link to the siren: https://ebay.us/fEgahDThank you in advance!

Replacing motor in mobility scooter?

Hey all, I have a mobility scooter that I use for travel(caravaning among other). It's an Eloped Travel XL(40 kg or 88 lbs, 24V 22Ah battery), and I think it's only available in Sweden, but there are similar models all over the world. My scooter has got a 180w, 24v motor on a transaxle with integrated gearbox. The more I use it, the more frustrated I get. It's slow, 4mph/7 km/h, but worse, it really struggles uphill and sometimes it feels like its gonna stop all together. I've changed the batteries, with no improvement. It's not overheating. My guess is that it's just to weak. It might be ok to use when going to the shop or on flat surfaces, but not on gravel or grass.Anyway, I would like to replace the motor with a more powerful one, 350w or even 500w. The problem is that there isn't any compatible motors out there, so I'm guessing I'll have to replace the hole axle. I've been looking at these common China made electric motors that come in a range of sizes, have no idea about the quality though. Otherwise, maybe a powerful RC engine would work? I have no idea really, where to begin. Money is a concern unfortunately, otherwise I could buy a new transaxle or even a new, better scooter. Any ideas or help would be very appreciated! I'm quite handy but have never worked with these kind of parts before. How to pick the right sprockets, should I use chain or belt drive and so on.

Don't keep rats as pet !

When my brother decided to travel around the country, he has been forced to leave the white rat he kept as pet ... and I've been forced to adopt this little animal.Rats as pets quickly become cute, funny, and show a personality that make them even more endearing ... In other words, "la souris" (the mouse), as I renamed it because I was unable to remember the name my bro gave her formerly, quickly found her place in my home and my life. So, happy end ??No !No, because rats pets quickly develop lot of weird diseases :- dermatitis - mange- bumble feet- cysts- tumors- etc- and various infections and self-injuries because the rat scratches or bites itself because of one or several of the above diseases. The health and the life of your rat will quickly become a nightmare, and, if like me, you tend to consider your pets like full members of your family, your rat pet will become a great source of worries ... and if you're not cruel, you'll be forced to give an end to its agony. Because that's a real slow and cruel agony. Most people who adopt a rat as pet seems not to be aware of all the problems this little animal will have, neither how expensive it will be to look after it.The internet is full of sites dedicated to the diseases of rats pet. My advice : If you love pets, don't adopt or give a rat as pet !20080225 update :Despite what I said, if you still want to adopt a rat, then, you should better document yourself a lot before commitment.Member Please wrote a tiny instructable about How to take care of a rat the right way. Using aviation connectors instead of db-style connectors

Hello,I'm working on an arduino build that calls for a db9 connector, but cutting a nice, clean hole in a small, plastic project box for a db9 connector is difficult and messy. I would like to substitute a round connector so I can just drill a hole, and I came across "Aviation connectors." Would these be a decent replacement for db connectors? If so, why aren't they used more often? Is there some disadvantage when carrying a small (3.3v or 5v) DC signal? They are often rated for something like AC 200V 5A, which is total overkill, but would it be a problem? Here's what I'm looking at on Amazon: Hilitchi 32-Pieces 6 7 8 9 10 Pin 16mm Thread Male Female Panel Metal Aviation Wire Connector Plug Assortment KitIf this will work as well as the db9, I wouldn't mind buying the whole kit and having some round-hole options for other projects.Google searches have not been very helpful, and tend to give a lot of results for one or the other type of connector. Thanks in advance for any guidance!

I can't figure out a phone key matrix

Hello everyone,I'm Anthony and I'm a game designer / game master in an escape game, here in France. I work on Arduino most of the time and I generaly don't reuse electronics of other systems in order to modify it. But now I have to modify a phone to integrate some custom functionnalities.I followed a tutorial on this website to find out how to get a key matrix of the phone circuit (link to the tutorial)I'm quite a beginner to electronics and i admit that the key matrix I'm in front of looks really complicated. It has 9 wires soldered on it, but I can determine how much groups of keys it gets. I tried to use a multimeter with the continuity function but nothing happened. Do you have any tips for me in order to find it out ?Also, the small black lines that cross the circuit's wires are conductive but I have no idea of what the big black dot (on top of the circuit) is... It's hidding the paths so I can't see where the wires go.

SDR antenna - 50 or 75Ohm cable?

Once you get going with your new SDR dongle you soon realise that it is little fun with the supplied antenna - if it came with one...Local stations, police (unencrypted) and so on is all fine with the short antennas. But if you want to get weaker stations or even track some satellites you are as lost as trying to get anything in the 160m band on your screen.Obvious way out is to get an external antenna.Depending on your needs and layout at home you might be lucky to find a ready to go option at some cost.In most cases though you will need more than the 3-5m that come with the usual antennas for car use.And not all base station antennas come with enough cable - keep in mind that hieght above ground and no obstructions close by count...With RG58 cable already being quite expensive a lot people consider the cheap 75Ohm TV cable as an alternative...Can we use 75Ohm antenna cable for our SDR needs?Of course we can!We only need to make sure that at the antenna end AND the receiver end the cable acts and appears like a 50Ohm cable.Especially if you need a really long cable in range of over 20m the TV cable shines with less loss that can't be ignored.Let me try to explain it the simple way first:You TV needs 75Ohm but the good old dipole antenna provides 300Ohm.The so called BALUN that connects the actual antenna with cable matches the antenna to the required 75Ohm impedance for the cable and TV.Like the TV, we don't transmit anything, so we don't have to care about what happens if power would go to the antenna - it is not a radio in the common sense, we just listen ;)There are many options available to match any impedance to any other but in our case a lenght of coax pairs is all that is needed.1/12 of the wavelength for the 75 and 50Ohm cable and we have a match.But.....You are right this simple option does not really work if you want to listen to a lot of different frequencies. What works fine for the TV also works fine on both ends!I assume you use an antenna for the common 50Ohm system and a standard 50Ohm SDR module or receiver. Two simple transformers will do the trick just fine and allow us to use cheap 75Ohm TV cable. The one on the antenna end provides 50Ohm for the antenna and 75Ohm for the cable. For the receiver the transformer is the same type but connected in reverse. You can look up how to make one with a simple ferrite torioid core and wire or coax but also order them from your favourite Chinese seller in the usual online markets.Add an antenna switch and you can use multiple antennas optimised for the frequency in question with dirt cheap TV cable.Just make sure to put the balun in a metal enclosure that is connected to the braid of the coax on both ends.

Nordic Gold Answered

I'm planning on making a ring out of a coin. what to do with a 50,000 volt Tesla coil?!

I just got a 50,000 volt Tesla coil (Oudin coil) for Christmas. I dont have a clue what i could use it for, i need inspiration. My uncle likes to surprise me with semi random things so other than shocking metal tables i just dont know what to do with it. ---from teachersource.com (where he ordered it)While more accurately called an Oudin Coil, these are commonly referred to as a hand-held "Tesla Coil." This coil is self-contained in a heavy duty Bakelite case which forms a convenient handle. The spark is adjustable from 10,000 to 50,000 volts at frequencies of approximately 1/2 megahertz. The high frequency spark produced is about 1" long and can be used for a wide array of applications. An instrument like this is intended for intermittent use only and must be turned off after 10 minutes of use. The electrode furnished is approximately 2" long and the instrument is furnished with an intensity adjusting knob. For 115v, 50/60 Hz. An improved SAFETY FEATURE is the ON/OFF momentary switch which is in the handle. This makes our Oudin Coil extra safe for classroom use. (Runs on standard North American line current, 110 volts 60 Hz)

Hi, I need some help with making a circuit. I'm new here and dont have much experience with electronic components. I need a 12v circuit that whenever it receives power it waits 3 seconds then grounds the load in the circuit for 1 second. Then stays off until power is removed. It must reset every time it gets power. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
