Looking for small run manufacturers

We are interested in finding some good options for small (100s-10000s) runs of HID devices that would most likely have a few fairly simple electronics components and mechanical components Anyone out there have any suggestions? We would like to find places that are cost effective, could work well with newbies to the process, and might be interested in building an ongoing relationship for multiple projects. Cheers, Heather and Joe PS The mfg need is related to this: https://www.instructables.com/community/Make-HID-beautiful-1/ which leaves the door fairly wide open for wide variety of HID designs and possible related projects. Chiptune Guitar Synth Project

So ive recently thought of doing some chiptune music. But when it comes to doing all the programming on a Gameboy with Little Sound DJ, or making some song on Rymtik Retrobits on my 3DS, i feel like i could do better with an actual chiptune instrument. Ive looked in a few nooks and crannies of the interwebs and i have acquired some knowledge of homemade synths, but nothing i dont think i could actually use. I did find a neat link of a guy who made a Guitar Hero PS2 guitar controller thing, and the chord buttons were connected in series. The different chord buttons, when two or more are pressed, create different notes. There was also a whammy bar that made the chipnotes act like guitar notes with reverb. He also added an audio jack to connect it to a speaker or an amp. The one part im trying to figure out is how to make this instrument more of a synth than a one sound chiptune device. It might be possible to replace the "strum bar" thing on the GH controller with some additional buttons that make different kinds of 8-bit sounds while the whammy bar is used by the palm. The sketch ive made should shed some light on what im talking about. With all of that being said, is there anyone out there who could help me design a schematic or something that can help to make this thing better than what i could design by myself? I got the skills to build the instrument, but not the skills to design the electronics and circuits that go with it. Any help is greatly appreciated!

PVC-Free contact paper alternative?

I recently learned about Con-Tact brand chalkboard contact paper, which I think it really cool! You can cover a surface in it and write with chalk. I thought it would be cool to use a laser cutter to cut the paper into shapes, letters, etc. and put it on the walls. Alas, after contacting the manufacturer, it turns out to be made of PVC (vinyl). Laser cutting PVC produces chlorine gas, which besides being toxic, is also highly corrosive and bad for the laser cutter. Anyone know of an alternative that's not made of vinyl or PVC? It doesn't need to be big like contact paper, and it doesn't need to be chalkboard-like either (for chalkboard stuff there's paint), but I'm most interested in some kind of material I can cut into shapes and stick onto walls and other things. Thanks for any ideas!

Craftcation 2013 Recap

As you might have seen, I recently went to Craftcation 2013 with scoochmaroo and angelabchua! It was super fun and I learned tons of things, including soap making, macrame, paper embroidery and how to make bitters and limoncello. Below I've included some photos from the trip. Ventura is a really pretty town and the people at Craftcation were wonderful. :D Important things to note in the photos: Angie got in trouble at the Ventura pier. I made soap on the first day. Soap making was really interesting and we got to wear all types of safety equipment and use lye! It was really simple to do and my soap turned out perfect. I can't wait to share the recipe with you guys! Opening night, Sarah had a booth for making painted wooden bangles, there was live music and drinks, and the line for food was really long. Because I only think with my stomach I mentioned to Angie that we should sit near the food - score one for my stomach intuition! Sarah also had fun with the tent prop outside. Look at the cute little campfire! Did I mention Ventura was pretty? Cause it is. On the second day I made bitters and limoncello - they're no where near ready yet but they already smell just as good as some of the fancy store bought bitters I have at home. This is another thing I'd love to share here - it was fun and the results are great. Plus, a good excuse to do a little drinking (or tasting, whatever.) in the afternoon. :D I also made a macrame plant hanger on day 2 - I've always loved these. Turns out they're much easier to make than I thought. I found a rock on the beach that had a face so I took him home with me. We made lego jewelry! Sarah ran a table along with Angie on the third night and it was a huge hit. All the things I made during Craftcation: a macrame plant hanger, a painted wooden bangle, a lego heart necklace, a new pair of lego earrings, two types of bitters (grapefruit + dandelion root and lemon + lavender + cinnamon + hibiscus) and lemon/lime limoncello, two pounds of soap, and three embroidered paper pieces! All in all, it was really good conference! I made a business plan for myself, learned some new crafts, met tons of new people and networked networked networked. I definitely recommend it for makers, crafters, foodies and small business owners. There are tons of things I learned that I wouldn't have otherwise. Check out the #craftcation hashtag on twitter and instagram to see more pictures of the conference, or check out the website. :D

Gelli plate substitute

Hi. there is a new craze sweeping the craft and art community with a mono printing plate called a gelli plate. It's made out of some sort of mineral oil or gel of some sort. (i think). It's a flexible, clear mat with a soft feel and a give to it, a bit like jello. There are plenty of homemade versions using gelatin. which works fine for a while but it soon breaks up or bacteria sets in as gelatin is a food substance. Are there any clever boffin types out there that can make a similiar product that doesn't use gelatin and that has a good shelf life. I first thought of Oogoo but it's not pliable enough. This Gelli plate reminds me of the soft silcone gel that is used for scar healing, but is so expensive for small sheets. here is the link to see what I am after. http://www.gelliarts.com/pages/gelli-printing-plate-demo

How to wire 2 micro switches to automatically turn off a reversible dc motor that is attached to a DPDT switch?

I have been trying to find a tutorial, but have not been able. Basically the dc motor goes forward, hits the micro switch and turns off.  Flip the DPDT switch, the motor turns on and goes in reverse, hits another micro switch and turns off again.  Where do I attach the micro switches in the circuit? I'm not too gifted in this, if you could be as detailed as possible it would be much appreciated!

Hi Your new Home page for Instructables is dreadful. You've lost the easy overview, fast navigation, pictorial overview and replaced it with a flashy meaningless image that wipes out your valuable home page real estate. I think Autodesk don't understand where makers and builders are coming from. I have to admit I was kinda waiting for something like this post buy-out. You take something that works and turn it into clunk. Sorry, but you've missed the boat on this one. John Graphic artist - Web designer

Can Non-Hybrid Cars Get 100+ MPG Today?

We're not talking about hybrids here; our topic is cars powered by the basic IC-engine that relies on gasoline and not electric motors. Today's gasoline engines are not designed to combust/burn gasoline efficiently. Even with the advent of using high pressure fuel injection techniques that are computer controlled, we still fall short of the mark. Partly because liquid gasoline can't burn, only gasoline vapors burn, and there lies our problem. The same goes for injecting the high pressure droplets of fine-mist liquid gasoline that enters the engine cylinder using our current nozzle ejector technology, it doesn't all burn at the same time! Engine designers assume that these droplets are instantly vaporized by the engine's hot cylinder walls, and then instantly explode/combust when ignited by the sparkplug. Not true, up to 2/3 of the fuel isn't vaporized and doesn't combust until later on in the cycle. The 1/3 that gets almost-instantly vaporized and burns will do so within the several thousandths of a second (Fig-1) it has before the piston moves down its 1/2-stroke (out of today's 4-stroke cycle) completing the engine power-portion of its cycle. This releases power and tremendous heat which indeed vaporizes the remaining ~2/3 of our fuel from its liquid droplet form, but too late. It essentially does so when the power stroke is almost over or the piston is just about ready to move into its up-stroke (2nd stroke of our four stroke cycle) phase. So, because of poor vapo-timing we have 2/3 of our fuel virtually wasted by exploding at near the bottom of the power stroke. This incorrect explosive timing, which happens to most of our fuel, imparts very little energy into the crankshaft because its effective "moment" (a product of explosive force and radial-component distance from crankshaft center) is insignificant by then. Various attempts at adjusting the combustion timing spark hasn't made a significant difference. Even though ~2/3 of the fuel is now exploding and providing a huge force, its small "influence" arm distance is rapidly diminishing to zero, and any huge downward force times near zero arm-length is still zero. Some clarification here, technically thermal-efficiency is not improved, pretty much all of the gasoline gets combusted today. That means the energy of the fuel is almost totally released, but not effectively used. The problem is the timing it takes to convert fuel-injected gasoline droplets into vapor to combust at the correct engine rotational time and extract that expended energy. If you did the math for any size engine rotating at say 3200 RPM, you would find that a 4-stroke engine can only extract that energy from combustion during one of the four strokes. And the time it takes to make that stroke happen is only about 9.4 thousandths of a second or 9.4 milisecs (msecs). Now picture the piston just below TDC, all its valves closed, under pressure and containing all the fuel and air it needs to combust. At this point our deadly cocktail has about half of the 9.4 or about 5 msecs to complete combust after the timed sparkplug ignites it. The half factor exists because the max portion of our power stroke (moment arm) occurs at the mid-stroke of the piston sliding down and turning the crankshaft. If all of our fuel isn't combusted by then, the moment-arm or distance from the piston-center to the crankshaft quickly reduces to zero. Again, only vapors combust within a healthy 2 msecs (Fig-1), while fuel droplets take a relatively long time (>5 msecs) to vaporize before it can combust. Unfortunately nature is stubborn and vaporizes ~2/3 of our injected fuel droplets only during roughly the second half of the power stroke. So this huge amount of energy gets wasted because even though the forces of combustion are huge, its moment arm is rapidly approaching zero. Infinity times zero is still zero! Engine designers/engineers have been plagued by this phenomenon ever since the creation of the 4-stroke gasoline or Otto cycle engine. We need to improve this intermittent combustion/explosion process by combusting all of our injected fuel at the correct timing sequence. This is accomplished by injecting only vaporous fuel which will produce ~3X the power we now get. Another way to state this is, for the same power that we now get from a gasoline engine, if we burned the fuel correctly, we would only need 1/3 the fuel consumption to get 3X the current MPG.

In an interview, the boss trying to negotiate with your expected salary, what will you do?

I find it quite hard in dealing the salary with boss whenever its come to  an interview session. I am facing this problem not because of I set my expected salary high. It is because I know my self well, I am kind of person that  not firm enough in my point sometime. (sincerely thought that) and I am kind of soft hearted person. and I am very easy to deal with everything. I am an illustrator cum graphic designer. My working experience (2 yrs). I set my expected salary wise, where i though i really deserve that price. -based of my qualification and working experience. But when come to interview, the boss usually likes to negotiate my expected salary. They will try to make it lower than my expected price. Even though I try to fight it back in the first stage, but eventually I give up. If I decided to work for that job, I may end up feeling unsatisfying to my monthly salary.  Upon of all this problem I have facing.... Anyone have any suggestion for me to stand strong on my point? or any solution for me? I need to know, so that next time when I come to interview I can have ready and make sure I satisfy my salary.  thx :]

Rockoon Project

I've seen many high altitude balloon projects and many rocketry projects on the web.  These seem to be pretty established hobbies. The I got to wondering if anyone out there had ever heard of any amateur rockoon projects? If you haven't heard of a rockoon, it is a combination of the word "rocket" and "balloon".  The concept is that a balloon is used to tow a rocket to a high altitude and then lauched. When I've searched around, most of the references I find are to the use of rockoons by Van Allen (of radiation belt fame)in the course of his research back in the 1950's.  The only thing close to anything like an amateur attempt that I found on the web was by a group called JP Aerospace back in the 90's. I'm not necessarily contemplating any such project myself, I just find it a fascinating possiblity.   And like the many amateur high altitude balloon lauches and high power rocketry, it is amazing what people put together.  I wonder if it would be feasible for a high altitude balloon plus high powered model rocket to ever technically reach the internationally recognized altitude of ~100km considered "outer space". I know that both high altitude balloons and high powered rocketry have their own FAA (or equivalent agency) approval hoops to jump through. Perhaps they just wouldn't allow it, or it would be so much red tape that no one attempts it. Even a low altitude rockoon, of a small ~3ft diameter weather balloon towing a standard model rocket would be an interesting project, for the technical challenge of pulling it off successfully. Anyway, if anyone has ever heard of amateur rockoon attempts or your own musings on the topic, I'd be interested in hearing about it!

Arduino DC-DC converter? Answered

I have an Arduino project which drives a set of 12V LEDs using NPN transistors, I had been using the linear regulator on the Arduino to convert 12V to 5V for the Arduino and Ethernet shield, however I have some IL1205 DC-DC converters which could also be used, personally I think the IL1205s are the better option as they seem to dissipate less heat then the regulator on the board. Are there any other solutions to this, It would be ideal of I could power the entire project from a single 12V power supply, it also has to run continuously so must either produce little heat or be easy to dissipate the heat away from. Also because of the circuit I have to bridge the -Vin and -Vout terminals of the converter (for the transistors to work properly) I assume there is no problem in doing so. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan

Repurposing a cell phone Li-Ion battery for a project?

I have a quick question. I made myself an electronic cigarette that runs off of AAA batteries. It works quite well, it has a heavier hit than those commercial e-cigs like Blu. The only problem is, probably because I keep smoking it like a regular cigarette, the batteries don't last long. There may be another underlying reason, but I'll deal with that later. I have three 3.7v Li-Ion batteries laying around that I used to use with my HTC G2. My question is: could I repurpose these batteries as a power source for my e-cig? I've seen some articles on repurposing them, but they don't exactly explain the method. Does it only require making the positive and negative contact as noted on the battery? So...out of four contacts, I'd only be using the two?

Human Rights Organisation wants a new type of cameras

Hi there, I am representing a human rights organisation that uses hidden cameras to collect footage of abuses. We have used a number of standard cameras over the years such as "Gum Cameras" like these ones (http://gumcamera.com/)...However the quality and reliability of these is not great. We are looking to find someone who can design us a camera with the following: -HD camera recording -Good sound recording -Removable SD card storage -Over 60 minutes of battery recording and filming - at a minimum -Easy to use -Reliable -Easily charged and accessed using a USB -(Ideally) good in low light -(Ideally) holds it's the correct time stamp -Approximately the same size as the standard gum camera - or even smaller/more concealable We would probably looking to buy a minimum of 50 cameras to start with. Ideal cost per camera is up to $40-50 dollars.

TDA7293 isnt turning on Answered

I recently bought some TDA7293 chips figuring they'd make nice amplifiers, but when I tested one just now, nothing happens.  It doesn't even seem to take any power in, it doesn't heat, hum, smoke, pop, or anything else, and I've checked the wiring a bazillion times.  (12, actually, but that should be enough)  I'm using this circuit :  http://sound.westhost.com/project127.htm   on a +-12V supply, which is the minimum specs according to the datasheet.  I can't use a higher voltage because I don't have a higher voltage power supply right now (the 24V one I had hummed enough to destroy one of the other TDA7293s I had), and I want to remove all other possibilites before buying another split supply.  It has a little static when I take the power off, but leave the input connected, but it turns compleatley off if I apply voltage (but doesn't click or anything, there is no voltage going to the speaker at all.)  Any ideas?

control Stereo Volume

I have an old style Cassette SONY x-plod car audio stereo player for car. i have removed main cassette section & replaced it with an USB MP3/FM board with remote control. I made this because i believe in SONY's amplifier so successfully tracked amp track to get source from USB board. But here i got a problem with board which forgets volume level & restores to 25 level(Default range 0 to 50 level). so volume is boosting at high at every start of player. Now i want to Analog stereo volume controller between USB board's output & SONY amplifier's input. so what should be the configuration for volume controller??? Output target for amplifier is 4speaker(2x150Watts[Front] & 2x180Watts[Rear]). Does my idea works?? if it works what is the configuration for Analog stereo volume controller.??

nPlayer Game Clock for Hexagonal Chess (Need Help Sourcing LCD and Misc Parts)

Hello, I am sourcing components for a project. There is a 3 player chess variant called hexagonal chess. I want to make a 3 player game timer. The idea is to have three displays, one for each player on their side of the board. Each display has a button to stop the timer and start the next. Because there are 3 players, it won't work well to have a single timer between them, as is done with a 2 player timer. I don't have much hardware experience but I can read/write C/C++ well enough. I will be developing under Linux. These are the components I am considering. FRDM-KL25Z arm m0+, needs some modification to activate real time clock. has usb control 4 digit, 7 segment display A basic LCD display - $6.86 each, can I find these cheaper elsewhere? Will the m0+ be capable of driving 3 of such displays simultaneously? Is there perhaps a more appropriate solution? What other bits am I missing? Like I said, I don't have much hardware experience. I know I need buttons...I've never hooked up an LCD before, is there anything special I need? I downloaded the manufacturer PDF for the particular unit (FE0202W). It doesn't give much info. It doesn't even say how much voltage it is rated for. Is this just such a basic component that it doesn't matter so much??? Kind Regards, Movo PS: All designs/code will be published under an opensource license.

See the screenshots. Android tablet. (On a note of personal bias, the colour if Instructables is orange, not blue-grey.) EDIT: It looks like somebody took a mallet to the server, and it appears fixed.

Identifying Sliders and Knobs on circuit board M-audio Axiom 49

Hello there, I broke 4 of my sliders of my M-audio Axiom 49 and bended 5 Precision rotary knobs. I tried to order new parts at M-audio but they discontinued the production of the 1ste generation of M-audio Axiom 49 keyboard controllers and they cannot deliver the goods. So opened this sucker up and just googled Pots B10k and to my amazement I found a website with all these Precision Potentiometers. http://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?FS=TRUE&N;=4294759271+16330845+1323043 http://http://www.alibaba.com/catalogs/--400502------------351-4333 I mean 1000, I went looking for what I needed. The only problem is everything looks the same, I don't see any part numbers that could identify the parts on my board. So I was thinking I should ask some one who has and eye for this and is much smarter than me :) Can you help me identify the type of Precision Potentiometers on the boards you see on the pictures I posted.-->(sorry for the bad quality)

any ideas for an old palm pre?

Found one with the orig. packaging about to be tossed.  I figure there must be some good ideas out there; i wanted it originally to be turned into a pay as you go for my kids or as a back up as i crack a few screens.  Any ideas?  Please dont snark.

new drop-down link not working on safari with the iPad2

When I touch the "you" button I get a drop down menu that does not work. example. I click "you" then "you profile" it takes me to tech shop. (the button on tech shop works) If I click "you" then click "inbox" it activates the search box underneath the drop down menu... Anything on that drop down menu does not work... it just makes the menu dis-appear and touches whatever is under the drop down...
