Advice on lost wax casting

I am looking at the cheapest way to begin casting pewter with the lost wax casting or with creating rtv silicone molds and it looks like dental wax is generally the same as jeweller's wax. I would like to know if this product looks suitable for carving for lost wax casting: http://dentala2z.co.uk/PRE10379/en I would of course melt it to make blocks to carve from. It looks like it would do the job, carving wax seems to be really expensive in whatever form. Im also looking at using silicone and corn starch. thank you

Microwave Oven Transformer Stack

This is my Microwave Oven Transformer stack. It is currently current limited using a heater. There is approximately 10 36 watt 4' fluorescent tubes in a string around my garage that I am lighting with the MOT stack .My MOT stack contains 4 Microwave Oven Transformers connected with their outputs in series and their inputs in parallel. They are mounted on plastic cutting boards. I am using threaded rod to hold the layers in place while the PVC pipe covers the threaded rod and it also supports some of the weight. The output of this is approximately 8800VAC at 350mA The Input voltage is 240VAC Thanks for looking, Please comment and remember to rate if you like it! Just say if you want any pics of a certain thing, e.g. the MOT stack arcing to wood/metal etc. (I will try to get more pics of it arcing soon but it is hard to use a camera that has like a second delay before it takes the actual pic from when you press the button, stupid camera) ********************************************************************************************************** Edit The new pictures are of an arc between two carbon electrodes. The other pictures are of 12 fluorescent tubes connected in series but arranged in parallel so you can see them all

Easier access to My Groups

Instructables has all these Groups and fun rewards for them like the Sponsorship. However,  I'm not one for playing Hunt the Interface for very long, and getting to the groups I have joined is not obvious or easy. There is a drop down selector for "You" in the top menu (You Page, Drafts, Inbox, Favorites, Customize...) if you select Favorites, you go to an info page about You, and a left column menu says Groups. this takes you to a page that has a BIG icon cropped from very wide group image - one per group. Other top level pages like Explore, Create Contests have much nicer presentation to find things. Perhaps you could do something similar with the Favorites, or at least cascading menu of items.

Probability question : What gender are my fish? Answered

This is NOT a school homework question; I did my last one of those three decades ago! We were sitting in the sunshine, watching our six golden rudd swimming around the garden pond and my wife asked me "how many do you think are females?"  Well, lacking a detailed veterinary examination (of the fish!) I found it hard to give any sort of answer.  All I could suggest was I'd tell her what the likelihood of each mix was . . . later. Truth is, I've found it hard to come up with an answer and get varying results depending on the reasoning I apply.  So, can someone tell me the correct method for this and the probability of each possible mix of males and females.  For the sake of argument we'll assume these six fish were drawn from a large population of equal males and females and all were equally hard to catch. I'm sure my wife is on tenterhooks, awaiting my answer to her question ;)

Arduino UNO not working with Arduino WiFi shield

I'm having a lot of issues regarding interfacing an Arduino wifi shield with the Arduino Uno. My Arduino works fine when the shield is not attached to it but when I attach the shield, I'm unable to upload the code; I get: avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00 I also tried to change my board and uploaded the code on Arduino due, then it gives: device not found on COM 8 as error Otherwise the boards are perfectly fine, they are working usually they should. Also, I'm unable to reset the board when the shield is mounted on the board The code i uploaded is simple blink code, however none of the code are uploading The shield i'm using is this , the arduino's official WiFi shield shield These are the things i have already tried but none is working : -powered up the arduino from external power supply (12 V, 1A) -removed the shield and programmed it (code loads on board ) but then mounting shield on board, the led on pin 13 cease to blink -without using the shield , arduino works as usual (like that Rx, Tx pins work and pin 13's LED and power led blinks /lit up) but with the shield stacked on board , nothing seems to work

Need a 100v voltage regulator?

So what I am trying to do is make a variable power supply from a computer PSU, I've done thise before minus the variable part. I need a voltage regulator that will limit 200 or more volts to 100 volts DC. I also need different variable voltage regulator that will allow me to adjust this from 0 to 100 volts, they usually have a circuit in the datasheet that uses some resistors and a potentiometer. So, are there voltage regulators like this? If not what is another way to do it?

Why doesn't my potato cannon work? Answered

Today, I finally got to test my spud gun. I loaded it up with a plug of potato, sprayed in one second of hairspray, twisted the cap shut, and pressed the barbecue ignitor. I heard the ignitor work, but nothing happened. I tried this again and again, using different potatoes, cleaning the cannon, and checking the sparker. Every time I did it, it didn't work. I followed the instructions step by step from Backyard Ballistics, but I used ABS instead of PVC. I also used a barbecue ignitor instead of a lantern ignitor. I used all ABS parts, with the right cement for ABS, so I don't know what went wrong. Could it be my hairspray? I bought a $1 can, which seemed a little strange, because all the other cans were at least five dollars. Is cheap hairspray made with different chemicals? I believe the hairspray brand I used was called "White Rain", but I could be completely making that up.  Thanks, Noahh

Can I use the Arduino's digital pins for 5V and ground? Answered

I am making something using a servo and an Arduino, and it would make my design a lot simpler if I could use the Arduino's digital pins instead of its ground and 5v pins for power. However, I haven't been having much luck. When I use the ground and 5v pins for power, the servo works like it should. However, when I code the Arduino's digital pins 3 and 2 to output high and low, and then attach those pins to the servo's positive and negative wires, it just makes a ticking noise. I have done some basic troubleshooting, such as trying multiple pins and going over everything with a multimeter, but it hasn't revealed any problems. Does anyone know how to resolve this? In case you are wondering about my code, it's basically the Arduino Sweep code with two outputs added. #include Servo myservo; int pos = 0; int servoPos = 3; int servoNeg = 2; void setup() {   myservo.attach(4);   pinMode(servoPos, OUTPUT);   pinMode(servoNeg, OUTPUT);     digitalWrite(servoPos, HIGH);   digitalWrite(servoNeg, LOW); } void loop() {   for(pos = 0; pos < 180; pos += 1)   {     myservo.write(pos);     delay(15);   }   for(pos = 180; pos>=1; pos-=1)   {                                    myservo.write(pos);     delay(15);   } }

Wood working help?

To make this question as short as possible, I'll get straight to the point. I am making a replica of a weapon from a game from wood, however the blade is quite large. Its a kind of battleaxe (see picture below) however I'm having a hard time finding a way to get quite a big piece of wood to slope to a point like a blade would. So basically I want to make a large piece of wood into a long wedge shape but I cant figure out how to do it. As you can see in the picture, using the hand on the handle for size reference, it is quite a large blade. The tools I have in my workshop are: A table saw, a band saw, a scroll saw, mitre saw, drills, handsaws, and chisels. (these are the only tools I think would come in handy, I do not have any tools such as a belt sander, though I do have an orbital sander if that helps) Any help it appreciated! Thanks.

battery powered water bottle

Hello,  I'm interested in possibly modifying a water bottle with an attached battery and some heat coils, so that it could slowly melt snow in to drinkable water.  When I hike during the summer I carry little water because I'm refilling from streams regularly, and I'd like to do the same thing during the winter.  I don't normally build things on my own, but in this case I can't find any product like this.  I recognize that doing this requires quite a bit of power, so I'm not sure if it will end up being feasible or not.  I'm willing to carry quite a few batteries, however.  For a big mountain ascent, it's not uncommon to carry 4-5 liters of water, so we're talking about 10 lbs of water.  So even if I had to swap out batteries a few times, it would still be worth it to do that.  Any thoughts on the feasibility of this idea, and if so, how to proceed with it?  thanks, Chris

Tiny circuit to measure amps?

I am going to use a ATTiny43U to obtain the voltage of a 2vdc solar battery, via self powering (0.8-5.5VDC). Using ohms law I know I can obtain the amps as I will have the voltage and a resistor. I want to know what resistor to use? I will feed the amps result back into the ATTiny43U as well as the temperature from another sensor. Can someone please advise me what tiny circuit I can use to get the amps as I do not know what size resistor to use? The operating voltage should be between 1.55 and 2.67 vdc give or take a bit. Thanks and kind regards, jB

Hand powered boat propellor? Answered

I am trying to build a boat for a physics project, and i wanted to try building one that used a propellor instead of the usual paddlewheel or oars that other students have used.  I bought a 2-blade trolling propellor from Walmart, and i plan on attaching it to a crankshaft via a 4:1 belt drive ratio (so with every rotation of the crankshaft, the propellor spins 4 times). Two people will be turning the crankshaft , and the boat itself is stocky with a flat bottom and pointed end. Is this even possible, and will it actually get the boat to move at a reasonable speed? ("Reasonable" meaning rowboat-ish speed)  I included a quick sketch of what im talking about, and a picture of the blueprints to the civil war submarine that I got the idea from, just for proof of concept.

Private Instructables: a warning.

Folks, a warning about "Private" instructables; if you make it public, the "published" date does not change. I started an instructable as an idea a *long* time ago, but finally got around to making it real today. Unfortunately, when if wrote the draft, I accidentally made it private.  So, although i just finished it, it looks like I've got a project that has gone four years without a view. Not complaining, just warning others.

Staining leather with acetone?

I want to put a motif on my old black leather wallet I'm too lazy to go full screenprinting on it, and by the state of the wallet, it isn't really worth it either I've read something about acetone making stains on dyed leather, and thought of just using acetone to "paint" my design on the wallet The design is simple, so I'm thinking of just making a stencil. My only concern is: How do I make sure that the acetone doesn't "leak" beyond the borders of the stencil when painting? Will normal duct tape do?

Power from a moving aluminum-part?

Hi I was playing with  some ideas and wonder if it is possible to get power from a moving piece of aluminum. I know, if you tab the alu, you can get the power because to the eddy-currents geenrated if you have a permanent-magnet near... But what if i wanted to get the power NOT from the aluminum, but from the "other" side like the magnet? If i hold a magnet near a moving piece of aluminum, can i get power from the magnet as well or are the eddys only generated in the alu and not in the magnet since it already has its magnetic field? So the basic question is: How to get power with the help of a moving piece of aluminum, but the tab-point in NOT the aluminum but something geometrically separated. Thanks a lot! :)

Outdoor swing seat

My buddy, Steeeve, and I are big fans of a local restaurant that has a "tiki bar" in back, and our favorite feature is the rope swing chair at the bar. The seat hangs from three ropes. It's basically a bucket seat with a rigid, metal frame, so it doesn't  close in around you when you sit on it. This is then covered with leather. We are in the planning process of building some swing chairs of our own at the tiki bar at Steeeve's cabin. I am looking for any suggestions regarding the frames for the seats. Neither of us knows how to weld, and although we would both like to learn, I'm also looking for some more ready-made solutions.

Learning Redstone

I'm here today to teach you how to have fun with Redstone, now if you don't, you may just jump into a Minecraft sand well and drown. Okay, first thing is first, the BASICS. You may already know that there are what we call 'Logic Gates' in all forms of machines from a computer to a simple on and off switch. We are going to be talking about the main logic gates for now. So let's get started. The NOT Gate: The NOT Gate is what I think is the easiest logic gate to comprehend in Minecraft. It is basically an inverter. It inverts the input. For example, if I were to take an input of Redstone that is on, it would invert it and give an output of Redstone that is off.If it were off, it would be an output of on. This is one of the most used Redstone logic gates. The OR Gate: The OR Gate is also VERY simple to understand, and is also called a Universal Logic Gate, this is because you can use this gate to make any other gate existent. OR basically means 'One input OR the other input  OR both will give us an output'. This is like saying 'Jeff's dog will get a treat if he jumps in the air OR he rolls over, OR does both'. This is also easy to comprehend. (The NOR Gate is the same as the OR Gate except its output is inverted) The AND Gate: The AND Gate reciprocates the OR gate except for one major difference. Instead of 'If one OR the other is on the output is on', it is 'If one AND the other are on the output is on, otherwise it is off'. So what this is saying is that you need to have BOTH inputs on in order to have the output on. This is like saying 'Jeff needs to turn the handle AND push the door to open it'. (The NAND Gate is the same as an AND Gate except its output is inverted, the NAND Gate is also a universal gate) The XOR Gate: The XOR Gate is also very similar to the OR gate but instead of 'One or the other or both', it is 'One or the other'. XOR means 'Exclusive OR', meaning only one of the inputs can be on or else I wont turn on. This is very important when dealing with Redstone calculators or ALUs. It is one of the main functions of a Redstone Adder or Subtractor. (The XNOR Gate is the same as an XOR Gate but its output is inverted) Those are all of the main basic logic gates I'm going to take you through today! These ones are the most important ones to be used and can help people a lot. There are PLENTY more to go through but that would be a bit much documentation for me to handle. If you need any help or need some easy visuals, you can go to StephennJF's YouTube page, or you can also go to bennyscube's YouTube page for help too.

How do I set up a mobile wifi router (LAN), and a wifi windows machine? Answered

We are a collective of dancers and bicyclists that organize huge bicycle rallies up and down the west coast. There are dozens of bicycle sound systems on these rides, and we seek to send an airplay audio signal to everyone's smartphone with wifi. The software of choice is Airfoil. http://rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/  For it to send audio, it needs to be installed on a windows or mac computer (not cell phone or tablet). Smart phones can then receive the audio signal. I need help designing a road worthy wifi router and windows machine to be the moving hub of this wifi broadcasting party. Extra points for durability, signal strength and thrift. Please be detailed, because I am only vaguely knowledgeable of wifi, and I'm not that bright. Please note that I am well versed with other options for sending an audio signal. I have reasons for being this specific. Without your help, I would acquire a used netbook with a solid state drive running windows (maybe about $200), grab a wifi router (I have a few older ones lying around) run it all on an inverter and give it a go. Because I am a mac guy, I don't know how to do anything, like how to set up a local area network.... (I usually jam in a cable from a high-speed modem).... we are not doing that on a bicycle, so I'm a bit fuzzy on that part. I am well versed with power supplies, and willing for the range to be less than ideal at first... (that can be improved later) I am just looking to get a trial of this system up and running. I am most appreciative of your help, and I plan on writing a full article on what I've learned, if successful~ Thanks!!! Tor PS, Photo not of me, but these people are obviously awesome, and will love what we are doing.

It is usually made from fruits. Information on product design? Answered

Hello all!! I have something in mind that I want to build. I will try to market it and make money but my first point is to actually get it to work. It is a mechanical product, imagine it like a blender but twice the size. It will have motors, valves, wiring, and will need manufacturing. I have never designed something, so I was wondering whether there is a source that can help me with my product design. I am not looking for tips on how to sell my design, or how to make a minimalist interface, or make it beautiful. I am looking for help on purely mechanical design and tips for the product to work best. Some of the things i want to know are: 1. Which material should i use? Normal steel? Stainless? Galvanized? How thick a sheet metal? Plastic? Glass? 2. Which  material is easy to handle and cheap to manufacture? Which shapes can be made easily which shapes cannot. 3. What type of transparent material is cheapest and best? 4. What do i need to look out for in my product? Weight? Sharp edges? Hiding wires?  This is the type of information that I want. Practical things! Any information is appreciated!!! Point out any books, pdfs, slides, or sources please!  Thank you in advance, Chris
