12v 3w led project

I am trying to build a "knight rider" light for my car using 3w led's. I know enough that I want 2 per section (8 sections total) and to wire the led's in series. They will be mounted to an aluminum bar, so I might not need heatsinks. They will be controlled by a "chaser light" sequential controller. The specs are: yellow 3w led forward voltage:  2.9v - 3.3v forward current: 750 mA I have researched and found led drivers but they are a bit more expensive than I would like to pay, since I would need 8 of them. Can anyone help me with what I need for this to work on my 12v dc automobile? Do I need transistors, diodes? What resistors do I need (value, wattage, etc)? I need major help from the electronics gurus. How do I do this??? I posted this in the workshop section mistakenly yesterday.

Sawzall Blade Survival Knife?

Hey Everybody! I've been looking around and I've found many people who have made knives out of hacksaw blades, but I was wondering if it could be done with a Sawzall blade too. If I used a woodcutting Sawzall blade, then the knife could probably go through a limb of a tree faster, and then I could sharpen up the other non-cutting side, and add a handle of some sort, maybe out of paracord or Sugru. Add a Kydex sheath, and its pure DIY-ed. What do you all think? Would the Sawzall blade be sharp enough to cut a piece of wood with your arm (as opposed to the rpm of a Sawzall motor)? Would the Sawzall blade take an edge on the back? Would this be worth my time? Thank you!!!

I've built a few disposable camera strobes, and want to use them in solar garden lights, instead of LEDs. Answered

My problem is getting them to switch ON after dark.  The strobes draw about a half an amp, when the first start to charge.  A single AA rechargeable battery should last a few hours, but no idea on how do the switching with only 1.2 volts.  Any help or suggestions?  Was hoping to get a half dozen put together before Halloween, sort of a lightning-effect.?

Streaming a video with a 20 minute delay?

I'm working on a project where I'd like to continuously record video from a camera and play it back on a projector, but the playback should have a 20 minute delay from the recording. Any thoughts on which tools to use? I'm considering writing something in OpenGL to take video input and play it back, but I suspect there may be an easier way. Thanks!

questions for rail gun?

I have a few questions about a rail gun project i'm working on... 1.) Where are some good places that i can buy parts for a decent railgun (i already know of some places like home depot (for the rails and casing) and radio shack (for some of the minor components)? 2.) Is there a better material (cost and in efficiency) than copper for the rail? (i heard aluminum is good, and i also heard silver is good but silver is expensive) 3.) what are good power supplies (something fairly mobile would do nicely, and i am not asking for specific requirements i am asking what other people have used as power supplies) if you commented on my last question, don't on this one please, i got your opinion. I would like an answer that is to the point please and not something that has to do with whether or not i should build a rail gun (i have gotten answers like that before which bugs me when i ask a question).

Awareness is Empty

It's a new month.  That apparently means it's time for champions of various causes to ask their online friends to repost something about awareness for whatever cause. This month happens to be April.  One of the many causes assigned to this month is autism awareness.  I'm married to an aspie.  We have three autistic children. Being "aware" of autism is about as helpful for autistics as posting your bra color in your facebook status is for curing breast cancer.  A well known autism charity likes to champion their feel good cause with pictures of children and alarmist catchphrases about how tragic and dream crushing autism is, and how we need to cure it now.  I really hope that this community doesn't need a lengthy explanation (although I can also cite sources, if you like) about why the notion of curing autism is as offensive and misguided as a campaign for "ridding the world of nerds" might be.  Let me know if you need more information on the heritable physiological structural brain differences that define autism, and the sensory and filtering challenges that determine an individual's struggle with the less advantageous sides to that type of brain. You know what's more appropriate than autism awareness?  Autism acceptance.  Everyone is born with different challenges and different talents.  Some people have very different reactions to sensory stimuli.  Try to be sensitive to that.  Allow people to be who they are without trying to force them into some arbitrarily shaped mold. If you want to learn more about what it's like for autistic people, look up first hand accounts (and ask people you might know who are on the spectrum) - there are many accounts out there, and they're quite diverse.  The more you read, the more you'll understand.  I don't understand why people would think they're getting accurate information about autism by searching the website of an organization that actively excludes autistics from any board or leadership position.  Then again, that organization touts operant conditioning as a therapy for autistic children, because apparently it's better to force a child to seem normal than to understand why he acts in unique ways and help meet his unique needs. Supporting the idea of neurodiversity doesn't mean that every difference is fantastic and easy to deal with.  It's not. Focusing solely on the negative aspects of anything can make you overlook the gifts that come with it.  I take medication for my ADD to help with the challenges that come with that, but I certainly don't try to eradicate it (which would be impossible anyway).  If my medication muted the positive aspects of ADD, I'd have to seriously reconsider whether it was worth it.  Karate or dance lessons to help with the proprioceptive challenges that can come with autism don't negate any positives, nor does compassionate speech therapy. I won't be "going blue" this month for awareness, which does little more than promote a large corporation with questionable intent.  I'm all for scientific research, but the agenda behind their funded research is highly suspect. Do you have an ache to do something for autism whatever month?  Tell a friend that instead of posting images of puzzle pieces, you're going to be more accepting of differences.  If, for some reason, you really want to spend money on a cause, you could try something practical like buying an autistic kid a lego set (not one of my kids, though... I am so sick of stepping on those darn things).  Obviously Legos aren't appropriate for all ages, nor for all spectrum kids... just ask the parents for guidance.  Toys or fidgets relevant to the kid's interests are great, especially if they help the kid further develop their unique analytical skills. If you really want to donate to some organization for some reason... there's an autistic self advocacy network. Oh, and for the record...  normal brains don't change the world.

Darlington pair not working? Answered

HI,I've uploaded a schematic of a circuit I just built and hope everything is clear in it.I need the darlington pair(made using a couple of BC547) to allow flow of current through it to power the relay only when the SPST switch between the base of the first transistor and +6VDC line is closed. But here's the problem-Even before I close the SPST switch the relay's coil get power,as soon as power is served to the circuit. The situation can be compared to directly connecting a relay to a 6vdc source because all the other components in my circuit fail to perform their functions.FYI the LM 7806 regulator gives out a max.current of 1 ampere and I suspect the issue is related with the Darlington pair receiving too much current.I tried adding a couple of resistors to block the excess current, making little difference.I request for your assistance to correct the flaw. Thanks in advance for spending your precious time.

What's the best way to increase the power on my son's electric motor bike?

I bought a riding toy for my son and it's cool, but it doesn't have enough power sometimes.  It's fast enough in the house, but it gets stuck outside.  The plastic wheels tend to slip on rough surfaces and inclines, but I can address that issue at the wheels/tires to some degree.  However, the battery that came with it is a 6V4.5AH/20HR sealed lead-acid rechargeable battery (It has F1 contacts, so unless I change or adapt the wires/connectors, I think I need to stick with a battery that has these).  The AC-DC adapter has 6V DC 500mA output, but I think I could get a UNIVERSAL AC DC ADAPTER {1.5V 3V 4.5V 6V 9V 12V 500mA} that would work with a new battery. I'm hoping that I can increase the power noticeably but safely.  One constraint is the width of the battery area inside the "engine" compartment.  It fits the present battery (1.75 x 2.75 x 4), but I'll have to mod the compartment to fit a replacement that's more than slightly bigger. I've seen some 12V4.5AH batteries online, but most are larger in every dimension. Am I even on the right track thinking a higher voltage battery is what I need? Could I use an NiMH or Li battery/batteries instead? What's the easiest, safest, cheapest route for this mod? Thanks, Dan

I need help building a 1.3V solar charger from garden light cells?

Hi! I need some help with building a solar charger...I don´t know much about electronics, maybe one of you has the patience to answer a few questions? The device I want to charge has a label that says 1.3V=2W (there is 1 rechargeable Nickel-Cadmium battery inside), the wall charger is labeled 1.3V=1500 mA... I have 2 solar cells from garden lights, they both were used to charge two 1.2V batteries with 600 mAh (in series). That´s all I know about them, I have no way of measuring the output... My questions: 1. How many Volts (at least) does it take to charge that device? 2. How many Volts can the battery take without getting damaged? 3. How many Volts do I usually get from those garden light cells? If they charge 2 batteries (1.2V) in series it should be 2.4V, right? 4. If 2.4 Volts is too much for the device, how do I limit it? I would like to build the charger without buying a multimeter and the parts will be salvaged from other stuff...I hope... I know those are a lot of noob questions but I would really appreciate your help!

9V Solar Cells (Parallel) to DC to DC USB Booster: Will it "fry"?

Hi all. Here is my question. I want to take 3 Solar Cells (9V, 500mA) wired in parallel (1.5A output) and run them through a DC to DC USB Boosting Circuit (5V) Now I know this circuit will boost up to 5V, but what if 6-9V comes in to it? Will it just limit to 5V running through, with no boost, or will it "fry" it? One more question: What if I wanted to have the 9V, 1.5A of the parallel solar cells route into a Mini-USB port that can take 2 amp in? Same problem, or no problem? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Random collage of junk needs a purpose....

Okay, I have: 1. An original Xbox with a possibly dirty/faulty disk drive, along with the chords to it (I turned to controller into a USB controller) 3. Random chargers, MP3/MP4 players, chargers, speakers, etc.,etc. 4. Why are "ground" and "(-)" often referred to as the same thing.

Ok, so, I am very confused with wire colors, ground and (+) and (-). I NEEd someone to answer me. What I have read is that electricity flows from (-) to (+). However red wire is always connected to (+) and referred to as the "hot or "live" wire, and (-) is the ground. This seems backwards to me. Ground wires go to ground because it is highly positively charged, It just seems like there is contradictions. I really need this cleared up. Thanks in advance!

I want to increase the amps to my laptop's external USB ports. How crazy is this plan? Answered

My laptop only has two external USB ports. I keep a mouse plugged into one constantly, but I now need to use an external USB drive that needs more amps than one port can supply.  I use a Y cable that pulls power from two ports, but I can't use my mouse at the same time. (Which is really a non-starter with the work I'm doing.) There are about 5 internal USB buses available, all of which have one port available, all drawing minimal power (fingerprint sensor, web cam, sd card reader, etc.)   My wacky idea is to tie the voltage pins from one of these 'spare' ports to one of the external ports to provide the amps needed, similar to what the Y-cable is doing but keeping it internal and keeping one more USB port available.  I've had this laptop apart and know that I can do the wiring, but I'm curious about how high the potential is to cause massive damage. Any pointers?

We are seeking excellent images of the community's authors, but keep in mind we have a particular aesthetic we are seeking: Images of Authors working on their projects Portraits of Authors in their workspace (kitchens! studios! where ever you make stuff!) High-res, well lit images (2000 px on it's SHORTEST side) Land-scape orientation Strong compositions Excellent accompanying instructables I will continue to photograph local authors, and I'll keep the forum updated as I travel to other areas. I'll tell you where I'll be, and you let me know if you want a photo taken while I'm there. By no means should we limit ourselves to featuring just the authors that I am able to visit. Can any tiny spy cam emulate the basic human visual range/angle?

I ask because i made a large almost featureless spherical mascot head which i dont want to ruin by cutting a gaping view hole through the front, iv tried the stretched mesh fabric approach but it doesnt look right at all. The current version has a wide slit so my horizontal vision is great but iv got almost no vertical vision, im taller than average and need to see where people around me are around me so i need an improved ability to look downwards. So iv been thinking about one of those tiny spycams linked to a screen mounted inside (perhaps vr goggles), is there a camera with the kind of wide viewing angle you naturally get out of your eyeballs, so i can angle my head down and actually see the ground reasonably close to my feet?
