Can I use a multimeter to ground/drain charge from IC?

I need to ground a FlashRAM chip to clear it, and I'd like to use a multimeter to do it, but not sure how. Red probe or black? What setting on the meter? It would be great if I could see if there is a charge on the IC and watch it dissipate in real time.Any advice would be most appreciated.

Is the Prusa i3 MK3 a good 3D printer for my school? Answered

I teach a 3D animation class and have been tasked with finding a 3D printer under $2500 to be used to print the models my students make. First of all I want something reliable. Second I want ease of use. Finally I want the most bang for my buck as it were. I'm leaning toward the Prusa i3 MK3 based on the reviews I have seen, but I want to get several quotes.

Landline and mini speaker & microphone : can one use bluetooth mini speakers ?

Hello,Is it possible to use one of those small bluetooth speaker + microphone sold everywhere with a corded phone (cordless but wired to rj11 modem-routeur) to achieve some kind of JABRA-like system ?This is intended for me (light hearing impairement) and my parents.Of course the Bluetooth would not be used as bluetooth but as a "wired" speaker+mic to the phone base (with 3.5mm audio cable as for headset used by gamers..The idea is to get a louder volume than the handset or base of a corded phone can provide.and the problem of sound quality + cuts that arise from this mode of use (listener cans speak but with a delay ...) Please, don't answer me to buy "Jabra" or buy "amplified" dect phone.Just in case, I dream of a mini speaker not bigger than a glass o water connected with a lapel microphone (or replacing the microphone + speaker of my GIGASET handset ...)Any answer and/or suggestion would be appreciated.

A hot box full of Satan!!!

I'm already preparing for Halloween. One of the props I would like to build is a box to hold "Satan." I'm not yet sure what I want it to look like (rock? metal?)... but I do know that I want it to be warm to the touch. Not HOT... nothing that would actually harm anyone... but obviously - and devilishly - warm. My first best thought is to take something like an old-school metal lunchbox, create false walls on the top and bottom, and then put SOMETHING in the in-between spot. But what? Chemical hand warmers? Something battery-operated. Your ideas are welcomed. And if a little bit of smoke could come out, all the better. Please shout if you need any clarification!!! Thanks!!!

Question: Best materials to build a meter height elevator (3 floors)

I have a challenge, and that is, to build a 3 floor elevator. The main frame was built using 2mm carbon steel sheet and rivets, and painted blue. The frame, 950mm height, 250mm width. I thought of using doors (two halfs, opening to opposite sides). What I'm lacking is: • the motors to open the doors (already have one for the cabin, which is more sheet); how strong they need to be• the doors; more sheet? They will be on the main frame. And, should the doors slide on a U like tube to prevent them from woobling? or use gear racks weld to the lower part of the door? And, how would I join the doors with the motors, pulleys and belts?. I'm having stupid amounts of difficulty to view how I am to make the doors work. This will run on grafcet, already done too. Just really only need to assemble the doors and its motors.

WTV020M01 sound module need help

Hi I recently bought a cheap WTV020M01 (WTV020SD) sound module from china. i know you get what you pay for but i cant really afford to spend big on that kind of electronics or else i would have. Any ways my problems is i have wired up the component as instructed, loaded up the audio files as per instruction on the micro SD card and connected it to power and hit the play pin. And NOTHING happened. i then tested to see if it was getting power and yes the power was fine. After being frustrated i tried moving around the power connector and discovered that if i placed the power in the reset pin the module lit up as if it was working and all the buttons worked but still no sound. i am not sure that as its a cheap component its a dud or have i just wired it up up wrong, or an i missing something like an amp. any help would be good thanks. here is some links to the component specs http://www.datasheetq.com/view.jsp?pn=WTV020M01&fac;=ETC⟨=en

How long does it take to get an instructable featured?

Hi!I just published an instructable yesterday, and I know it was a Sunday, so Instructables staff weren't at work. On top of that, it was late at night as well, so that wasn't the best time to get it reviewed. However, now it's up, and I'm wondering, how long does it usually take for someone to get around to reviewing a newly published instructable to deem it worthy of a feature?Thanks!38ren

Simple homemade clutch for a flywheel toy?

I love those old flywheel toy cars and pump tops, but they are getting too rare to disassemble and I'd love to know how they work! I understand the push part, like in a push drill. What I can't seem to find is how to get the wheel faster and faster with repeated pumps. There must be some sort of clutch that somehow doesn't need to match speed with the spinning wheel, and it must be simple, or they wouldn't have used it in those (originally) inexpensive old toys, I do remember that there was no ratchet noise. But I can't figure it out. I know this sort of thing used to be quite common, but I'm drawing a blank on the internet. Any help will be appreciated! Many thanks!

How to make Arduino triggered still camera?

I'm looking for a simple way to make a camera using Arduino with the following properties and behavior: -when a certain signal from a sensor or switch gets to the Arduino it takes a single picture and sends it to some kind of memory, preferably a large one that can hold a lot but is small in form factor like an SD card or USB stick. -the camera is always on and waiting for input, allowing the image to trigger immediately upon sensor trigger -the whole thing would work with a fairly small form factor Arduino board, shield, and camera module -obviously camera quality is important, something that would give a reasonably clear image within a fifteen foot distance and in a variety of lighting conditions without a long time taken to focus would be ideal. It seems like most guides I've seen are for video cameras with a ton of options or other inputs. I just want a stupid simple camera that only returns one picture for one input, with an on off switch. Looking for product suggestions or pointers to guides to do this. I'm pretty inexperienced with Arduino. thanks so much!

Solar Powered Electric Fence from electric fly swatter and garden lights

Hey everyone, I'm working on a little project but circuit design isn't my area of expertise. I want to build a little electric fence to put around some potted plants and keep the squirrels away. There isn't an electrical outlet nearby, so I want to rely on solar power.I bought an electric fly swatter from Harbor Freight and two solar garden lights. The fly swatter runs on 3 volts, and each garden light has a 1.5 volt battery. I want to wire the batteries in series, but if I'm not mistaken, won't that mess with the charge controller circuits on the garden lights? How can I accomplish this?

I want to put an electric motor on a 4-wheel bike- (beach bar cruiser) i`ve got ideas but could always use more!?

I own a surrey(4-wheel bike) that seats six and i want to put an electric motor on it.I am on a really limited budget so i need to do this as cheap as possible. I need to get enough power behind this thing to run about 2 miles and it doesnt have to go fast either- if i can get it to top out at like 5-10 mph that`d be excellent. I was thinking i might use a washing machine motor(approx. 115 volt AC // 10amp) with 1 or 2 12V deep-cycle batteries and a 12V-120V AC/DC inverter. I`m no electrical engineer so i could you guys`s input/advice/opinion on whether i`m heading in the right direction and if this has any potential at all. I`m staying away from a gas-powered motor because i think the cops in my town will pull me over if they see/hear a gas engine on a 4-wheel bike. The real goal here is to get me & my friends to the bar and back without pedaling our asses off. Any advice would be greatly appreciated-

Hello world! I have a random issue that has been stumping my class since it began: the doorknob is warm. No other doorknob there is warm. There are a few other knobs in the room and they aren't warm, so I don't think it has to do with the heat difference. They aren't just a little warm, they are significantly warmer than other doorknobs. I'm in a room full of engineers and none of us have any idea why they're so warm!

Considering doing a 3D Printed 6DOF robot arm, any tips?

Hello all,I'm considering creating a medium sized 3D printed 6 DOF robot arm for Raspberry Pi or Arduino Mega, likely using 28BYJ-48 5v mini stepper motors for all joints and an optional servo for the claw. Current sketches and ideas have it laid out with a rotating base, two arm segments (one rotates), and a 2 axis "wrist". Larger steppers may be used in a second iteration based on the performance of the first. (The picture is of the two arm segments.) I want to be able to code it to the point where it can be used for 3D printing, CNC, and Laser based work, as well as accurate pick-and-place functionality. I assume my code will need to have advanced trigonometry functions to triangulate the x-y-z position and angle of the manipulator head (I already know how to do this), but I am unsure of how to get to that point from a standard g-code file (or how to read a g-code file with Arduino in the first place). Any tips or ideas that might help? Thanks, Dangerously ExplosiveP.S. If you like the idea, but don't have a tip, comment anyway with what you think I should have the arm do. It's still in the design stage and I'm trying to get a feel for how popular this idea will be, as well as possible functions.

How glue gun heating element works?

I've got this little glue gun. On the package it said: 10 watts, AC 120-240V. First of all how is it the same wattage at 120 and 240 volts? I wouldn't think it could be. Another question. I took it apart expecting to find a coil of nichrome like in a soldering iron. That is not what I found. Instead I found that the power cord was soldered to two inch long twisty tie wire looking, insulated wires. I dont know what type of wire that would be. It appeared to be brass or copper on the inside coated in what looked like steel though the wire was not magnetic. These two inch long sections of wire had two little paddle contacts on the end and between them was a little rectangular chunk of aluminum. THe contacts and the aluminum chank were wrapped in orange cellophone it looked like. then Sandwiching that were two more flattish rectangular pieces of aluminum. That whole deal was tightly clipped with a steel clip to the alumium housing/nozzle inside of which the glue melts. My question is-where is the resistor here? Measuring the resistance of the whole glue gun, cold, at the prongs of the plug, the resistance is around 1900 Ohms. I'm seeing some wires hooked to a chunk of aluminum. What am I missing thats creating 1900 Ohms of resistance? It must be that thin cellophane wrapper no? How this type of element works I do not understand. Help?

How can I register a physical button press on a webplatform using the Feather HUZZAH with ESP8266?

I am trying to make a cube where 4 of its sides have a physical button which can be pressed. I want to be able to receive what button was pressed and when via long distance. So wherever the cube is, I can read what it sends on a webplatform of any kind.I looked into Adafruit IO, the feather boards and IFTTT automation but can't figure out how to do this still... I have a basic arduino kit already but nothing Adafruit related yet, before I buy more parts I need to make sure I know what I need and how I will make it work. So far my best research has gotten met to the Feather HUZZAH with ESP8266, but I am not skilled in coding are working with circuit boards. All I know is that it has the option for a battery so my cube can function on it's own (which is very important) So the main question is: How can I make a small portable cube with buttons on its side to send the data of those button presses to an online platform wherever it may be used?

How to power servo without driver/arduino?

Hi, I'm trying to make a servo motor spin without using a driver or micro controller, I just want to power it directly. It doesn't need to move a specific distance, or be precise. How would I wire this up? The idea is to power it on by using a HC-05 Bluetooth module, either directly, or by optocoupler. It would have to trigger the servo on whenever a Bluetooth device that has already been paired connects to the HC-05 module (in wireless range), and then off when a Bluetooth device disconnects (out of range). My idea is to use an app that automatically plays an audio file through the HC-06 when it connects (this app already exists), and that audio file happens to be the correct frequency to act as a PWM signal. Is this even possible?

Trying to power an AR9331 router using a power supply have made

Hi, I am trying to power an AR9331 router using a power supply I have made. The AR9331 requires a 3.3V supply. My power supply takes 12V as input, then converts it into 5V using a LM2576 step down voltage regulator and then a LM1117 regulator to convert 5V to 3.3V. The output is at the desired 3.3V level and is ripple free. I have verified this using a scope. The problem is that if I use this power supply the AR9331 boots and then hangs. If I try booting the same AR9331 with a lab power supply set at 3.3 V it boots perfectly.I learned about inrush current and tried to measure it using the following setup: (see the attached 1)Since the resistor is 1 ohm the potential across it equals the current. The next figure shows the potential across the 1 ohm resistor: (see the attached 2)The inrush current is about 1A, whereas the normal operating current is 250mA. I tried two solutions, 1. Tried a current limiting resistor between my 12V lab supply and the LM2576 input. This works. The router boots perfectly. 2. Tried lowering the lab supply to 9V and connecting it to the LM2576 input. without any current limiting resistor. This also works. I suspect the problem is inrush current. Any suggestions? One interesting observation is that if I power my power supply with 9V or even down to 5.5V the router boots just fine. This has been happening repeatedly during my experiments. This is confusing me completely since the LM2576 is designed for input voltages well above 12V (see datasheet: http://www.kynix.com/uploadfiles/pdf2286/LM2576D2T-012.pdf)Thanks.
