Preparedness:: Survival:: Game for Kids/adults

The Girls Scouts are hosting an Earth Day event that is about preparedness and the skills needed to be a survivor.  I'm trying to create stations or booths with different skills for students and adults to try or learn.  For example, one station will be learning knots.  Another station will have simple materials for participants to make a makeshift shelter. I need ideas that are fairly simple to teach or show at that stations that can be done in less than 10 minutes. I'm also interested in a game. Thank you.

Structure advice needed for future teaching sessions of an AS child

Here is my dilema:  I haven't a lot to spend, nor do the parents of the child I am mentoring (Asperger's Syndrome).  Kits and puzzles are great, but can range in price from a few dollars to over $100 a PIECE.   I have been trying to go through Instructables and pick out "low cost", made from scratch, projects that would be suited for an 8 year old (soldering is out, but squshy circuits look good, etc), and would keep her engaged.   My biggest problem is not knowing "what" to look under.  I haven't a critiera idea on how to get to what I want quickly (I don't always have a LOT of time on line). I would like to make plans for at least 4-6 months ahead of time, so I can start on "putting together" what is needed for those projects. ANY suggestions will be helpful and I would be very grateful for any help in this matter.   Those experienced in teaching may have the best ideas, but all others are welcome too.  Out next session looms and the kit I got is a bit too advanced for the present situation;  so I am "projectless" other then a few small things like showing her how I made my Bristle Bot, and etc. So far, shes constructed 2 soda can bots,  a skeliton of a T.Rex excavated from a block of  P.O.P. (I think), a hex bot, a few T.Rex models, the Hadogenes Troglodyte puzzle her and I built,, a model of the solar system, etc and etc. She is going to be a real challange for me to find new and engaging things to create..... Thanks ahead of time for all that can assist...

Teaching Middle School Through Instructables

I am a junior high math and shop/technology teacher. For years I have been wanting to develop a math program that uses as much hands on as possible.  Like all teachers, I have developed a few projects, but just don't have the time to develop all the activities needed to cover an entire curriculum. I would love to correspond/collaborate with others (including non teachers). Email me directly if you are interested.  mikemckay@pwsd76.ab.ca

How to make sure I've got the right type of license?

Sorry, I searched through the answers and found a couple relating to types of license, but nothing that quite answered my question. I want to publish my first Instructable but am having a hard time finding specific information relating to the different types of license that are listed in the drop down menu. I want to protect my photos and written text, so the Instructible itself, but the actual technique that the -ible is about is one that anyone should be able to do whatever they want with, including making projects to sell. What type of license should I be choosing??

Portable aircon blowing the compressor again and again? Answered

I have my sisters protable aircon here and with the summer on the way I am now finally required to see if I can fix it. But I am somehow lost with this one... Problem: The aircon runs perfectly fine as it is supposed to for about 3 - 4 weeks with usage depending on how hot it is between 4 and 6 hours a day. But without any warning, noise or things like that the compressor simply stops running - or does not start. Noone really noticed what happened but noticed it no longer cools. Fixes so far: During the warranty period, which is over now, the unit was replaced twice by the shop. After that it had to be dropped off at a repair center where the compressor was replaced twice. After each compressor replacement we were told the compressor failed because the unit was not used for weeks and then it had to run for too long - total bogus if you ask me.... Checks from my side: Twice I measured the failed compressors and there was no resistance in the motor anywhere, totally burnt out or a thermo fuse blown I would say. Even after 3 hours of ongoing use the compressor won't get any warmer than my fridge or freezer compressor. So I rule out overheating. Pressure levels seem to be fine too although I can only measure from the service port and can't check hot and cold side seperatly. However: The unit seems to have a timing/safety problem. On my aircons it is impossible to make the compressor start again once it completed a cycle, only once the gas pressure has equalised it will turn on again. If, for example, the aircon just shut off and you set a lower temp on the dial the compressor will jump in right away. Even worse if an additional fan is blowing in the wrong direction, then the unit might turn on again seconds after it shut off. Conclusions so far: I am at the point where I say the starting under still high pressure is causing the motor to stall and then burn out. Only other thing I can think of would be a very badly designed compressor.... Since the compressor is still working (so far) I am now tempted to add a resettable fuse that is just a bit higher than the nominal motor current. Questions: A fuse might help to protect the motor but certainly is not the best solution. Am I correct to assume that the motor will need far more power to start if the system is still under nominal pressure and not equalised yet? If all my assumptions are more or less correct then what would be the best place to add a timer that prevents the compressor from starting again too early? From what I can understand from the electronics inside it seems a set of triacs of thyristors is switching the compressor, but all marking on them are removed ROFL Would have to do some more digging to check for they are driven to draw a better conclusion on the type, might even be tiny SSR's !? ;) At this stage I would consider a simple 555 timer that activates once the compressor is turned off by the electronics. Once running the timer will block the signal to the triacs or whatever is used until the time is run out. Might even go for a simple timer relay if I can find one in my spre parts boxes. If I go for a 555, how can I integrate it ? Can I just keep the start signal for the timer high as long as the compressor runs? How do I "block" the start signal from the electronics to simply reset the timer before it runs out? Currently confusing myself here with the starting, stopping, timing and getting it between electronics and compressor :(

Rust in old water pipes? Answered

Problem: The house I moved in to still has galvanised steel pipes for all water connections. The rust and deposit build up is so bad that with a pressure nozzle on the garden hose I reach aroun 20m from the tap near the mater meter but only around 5m in the backyard. To make things worse these restrictions affect the hot water. If I open the hot water tap and then open a col water tap the hot slows and then the flow fully stopps. The landlord already stated he has no intentions of replacing the pipes at this stage as it is quite costly. The possible solution: I was thinking of flushing the system with oxalic or phosphoric acid to break down rust and deposits. The questions: Has anyone tried this and has some feedback on how good or bad it worked? Do I have to fill the entire system with the acid or is it enough to get a few liters in and hope it will spread/dilute through the system within 24 hours? Is it advisable to use a bucket and aquarium pump (probably something stronger) to circulate the acid through the pipes?

Simple question 230v to 12v 50w/5a timed output

Hi, know a lil about electronics and electrical just want to make sure i'm not being a dummy or if there are any other better alternatives. Problem: A timed output circuit has gone bang on an piece of work equipment, wont go into detail as it may confuse the situation but it all works apart form the timed lamp button, I can see components on the lamp circuit disintegrated etc... So I wish to make the lamp part sort of stand alone. plan is to convert a 230v suply down to 12v 5a as the lamp it needs to power is 50w. Resolution: I was going to get this https://www.amazon.co.uk/200-250V-Halogen-Light-Electronic-Transformer/dp/B00CXK30UW and http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-5V-12V-24V-Infinite-Loop-Cycle-Timing-Timer-Time-Delay-Relay-ON-OFF-Module-/192106941494 Build accordingly and place in a project box with a push button on the project box also. Can anyone see any issues with this? Or am I complicating it, maybe the transformer then this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CAR-TIMER-SWITCH-TIME-RELAY-DELAY-OFF-CAR-LIGHTS-UNIVERSAL-KIT-1-105s-10A-12V/271203168131?var=570157183343&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D46150%26meid%3D5e8c43f27aec4c1092baed675673ef1f%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D6%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D280890951562&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851 or http://www.12voltplanet.co.uk/12v-universal-interior-light-delay-timer-relay-10-sec-delay.html any alternatives? advice?

How does instructables address some projects that I see have some serious safety and liability issues?

Some projects that are on the instructables website have some serious safety and hazard concerns. In particular electrical and electronic projects that interface with 120 volts or higher. Though many of these projects are incredibly creative and brilliant, some oft these projects could put people at risk along with their associated liability. The "instructables" organization itself might be liable as well if it has not done more than some superficial notice to it's membership. I suggest that projects that could be hazardous be inspected by any controlling authority (such as building and safety) prior to their being displayed on the instructables website.

How does the 2-Pole DIP switch on version 13 ESP82266 Arduino expansion board work ?

Hi, I bought a kit that uses a version 13 ESP8266 Arduino expansion board (shield). That version 13 is not a standard ESP8266 board. It has an unusual 2-pole DIP switch on it that can be set to "ON" or "1-2". I need to understand what the 2-pole DP switch does and I need to understand the electrical connections it is connected to. The information on the makers web-site is not very clear.  ( see https://fineshang.gitbooks.io/esp8266-based-serial-wifi-shield-for-arduino-user/content/chapter3.html ) There are many instructables about the standard ESP8266, but I cannot find any details about that DIP switch in a version 13 ESP8266 arduino expansion board. Can you please tell me where the DIP switch on the version 13 board connects to  - the pin connections - and why it is needed. Thank you

Advanced Helmet

Advanced Helmet By: Arseny Ratnikov I want to create a helmet that looks like a sci fi helmet (mass effect, titanfall, halo, etc.) and that; **Want to make cool helmet, need help with having multiple camera feed output to multiple screens** * Protects my head (able to decrease force from impact by significant degree) * Can filter the air I breath (does not need to be super extreme filter, just filter out general junk, the better the filter the more pleased I am, but if it becomes too bulky/expensive then it is unnecessary)(Optional/Most Likely) * Has a HUD with my vitals on it. I would wear some sensors, such as HR monitor to have some cool biofeedback, maybe also include other information.(option) * Maybe even have it be a digital display where there are cameras on the front and maye back of the helmet that then are displayed on the interior screen, where I have voice commands setup for some different things. * Have the helmet be as sound proof as possible and have microphones where my ears would be, then inside the helmet speakers, so that I can modify the noise around me to be how I want it to be. I understand this would be rather difficult (at least including all of the bullets) and that it could even be a touch silly. Yet, I find this a rather intriguing pursuit and think it will help contribute to becoming a cyborg. Any tips would be greatly appreciated as I don't really know where to start for this. I can imagine a lot of the work might be done on an arduino, but I simply don't know the feasibility of modifying noises of the world around you and having the cameras on the helmet. So here's a little prioritization sheet I worked out, it is not exactly in order, and maybe you all have some suggestions on what might be more critical to design and functionality. Prioritization 1. Functionality a. Head protection a1. Padding/Inertia dampener a2. Sturdy/solid b. Control of phone through bluetooth b1. In helmet speakers b2. In helmet microphone b3. Voice control c. Control of other systems such as screens c1. Voice control of screens c2. Screen modification c3. Screen HUD and other functions (maybe GPS map, time, etc.) d. Camera view d1. Camera live to screen with little to no latency d1a. 360 degree view compressed to 180 degree screen (maybe) d2. Computer control of camera feed d2a. Visuals, different HUDs e. Sound modulation e1. Sound cancelling e2. Sound reproduction at low to no latency e3. Sound modification e3a. Changing pitch e3b. Change decibel levels e3c. Change relative level of external sounds f. The HUD f1. Display of vitals f1a. Heart rate, oxygenation, etc. (Requires some monitor) f2. Display of time and other running interests f3. Display of current location on google maps/GPS system g. Air Filtration g1. Filtration of air, relatively high quality g2. Seal on head or seal over mouth and nose or full body suit that connects to helmet h. Extra Features 2. Style a. Look good b. Look like popular sci-fi media c. Does not interfere with functionality and accents functionality How should I do this? I am planning on using some old phone screens if I can for the screen part and multiple cameras. I plan on using a raspberry computing system (might need multiple) to modulate the output from the cameras. How could I make multiple camera outputs lay onto multiple screens that looks good at three to five inches from the eyes? Also how can I make the raspberry pi control my phone and computer via voice, or at least change a screens properties? Thanks

How could I build a mask that can breath out fog?

I am wondering if there is a way to make a mask with some sort of built in 'fog machine' of sorts. A way that I can breath out a fog like vapor from the mouth of the mask that is safe to breath in. I intend on making the mouth of the mask able to open and close by attaching the bottom jaw to my jaw to allow it to open when my mouth opens and close when it closes. I already fairly certain that dry-ice is entirely out of the equation as breathing in the vapors produced can be harmful.

Scooter Batteries: Can you wire 4 in series and 1 in parallel?

I'm selling my electric scooter to a neighbor who trashed his own. It's a virtually identical model aside from mine being a year older than his. he says his scooter runs on 5 batteries. Looking up the scooter parts info states, the control board and motor run off 48v. When I popped my scooter battery compartment lid open, I saw 4 12v batteries wired in series. So that's where the 48v comes from. Soooo could is be possible that the scooter batteries on the neighbors scooter are wired in 4 batteries in series to get 48v and one battery in parallel to add a bit off current to the total?

Led downlight transformer converting to a battery charger/power supply?

I know everyone will just say make the Ible and be done with it, but... I got a bunch of 11.5V LED downlight transformers, 35-105W. Upon inspection I realised their design is dirt simple but quite effective. Switchmode for the beginners so to say LOL The pros: Changing the output voltage is as simple as adding or removing windings from the output transformer. In my first test I was able to go up to 20V with no problems by adding a few turns and down to 5V by replacing the secondary with far less but thicker windings - impressive 12A until my windings started to produce smoke LOL Only imple parts, no microcontroller or other complicated stuff like opto couplers... The big con: These transformers are about 20 years old, so I would say first or second generation of LED transformers. That means I have no clue if something very similar or even identical can still be bought in shops or online. And what is the point of an Ible that noone can do because the main ingredient is nowhere to be found? I can take some pics of the circuit board later on for comparison but it would be great if some people with LED downlight transformers could provide some pics too. If it turns out other transformers are still in the same simple design I would like to use all provided for an Instructable. Credits for the pics will be left if you want or simply add your username to the pic as a watermark or such.

Trying to use relays with a electronic momentary to latching converter. Relays are tripping the latching converter?

I am trying to use this devise,   to turn on a relay attached to a positive wire from a blinker can that sends the signal to the corresponding light. I have two in parallel so I can turn on and off a LH and a RH light with a momentary switch. (can't use a regular on off switch). It works perfectly when attached to its own power supply. I am using this in on a 12 volt system that has some other relays running various things in the system. when I hook this into the system, even directly from the battery, activating the other relays turns the relays on attached to this devise. I suspect it to be noise since it works great on its own power supply. I Tried running the power lead through a resistor and capacitor to help isolate the loop but didn't work. This is stretching my understanding of electricity. What I think I am looking for is how to wire this to isolate it's power +/- circuit from the rest of the system. Otherwise suggestions on how to trouble shoot. I know it is best to add a diagram but I don't know how to make one.

Need help searching for information.. SEO related? Answered

I need help finding a website, I've tried dozens of search terms and not come up with what I've needed, so posted in the hope that someone knew of a site like I'm describing or could offer better search terms. Since SEO (search engine optimisation) is such a profitable business all I'm getting is companies trying to sell me SEO services. What I'm after.... Is a site that you paste a URL and tell it search terms and it does searches at the top 5 or 10 search engines then tells you the ranking of your site with those search terms at those 5 or 10 search engines. (I want to find out the google, ask, yahoo etc ranking of one of my instructables, depending on the search terms used) This service MUST exist, I just can't find it :( If it doesn't exist, I'll bloody well write my own site to do it as I can't be the only one that wants to do this :p

Your email messages cause both of my email clients to crash

For more than a month your email messages have been crashing both of my email clients, causing them to freeze. Either you have set the security level way too high (your emails content does not need high security) or you need to incorporate style info into the default XML file. error messages are: An error occurred during a connection to cdn.instructables.com:443. Cannot communicate securely with peer: no common encryption algorithm(s). (Error code: ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap) cdn.instructables.com returns the following: This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it If you can't fix this I will have to send your communications straight to the junk mailbox

More questions about an office shredder than you might expect :)

EDIT: I ruined it so I will not be fixing it. But I'm sure this gets typed into Google a lot so if you reply it will help others... I recently received one of those big (ish) office paper shredders from a company of a relative of mine to take apart (they know me... :) because it wasn't working like it was supposed to. After having the idea of fixing and selling it, I read online and figured out that the shredder had never been oiled, so I did that. But the shredder (motor) keeps heating up, like A TON compared to the 12-15 sheets it's supposed to handle. I can shred maybe 4 sheets at a time maybe 20 in total before it shuts down in the middle of the operation. I think this might be for overheating protection. Does anyone know what would make the motor heat up so much? Maybe paper dust got into the motor/bearings and makes it work extra hard? And it's not like I can turn it by hand because of these gears. I think it's a brushless motor but it's hard to tell because it's very compact inside. I do know that after it had shut down, I stopped working on it for other reasons, but after two whole hours I came back to work on it and was shocked to find out the motor was slightly warm! Anyone know? I can't find any more info on Google. Thanks!

ESP8266 version 13 DIP switch

Hi, I bought a kit that uses an ESP8266 Arduino expansion board (shield) that has a version 13 ESP8266 module on it. That expansion board is not a standard ESP8266 board. It has an unusual 2-pole DIP switch on it that can be set to "ON" or "1-2". I need to understand what the 2-pole DP switch does and I need to understand the electrical connections it is connected to. There are many instructables about the standard ESP8266, but I cannot find any details about that DIP switch in a version 13 ESP8266 arduino expansion board. Can you please tell me where the DIP switch connects to and why it is needed. Thank you
