Scooter Batteries: Can you wire 4 in series and 1 in parallel?

I'm selling my electric scooter to a neighbor who trashed his own. It's a virtually identical model aside from mine being a year older than his. he says his scooter runs on 5 batteries. Looking up the scooter parts info states, the control board and motor run off 48v. When I popped my scooter battery compartment lid open, I saw 4 12v batteries wired in series. So that's where the 48v comes from. Soooo could is be possible that the scooter batteries on the neighbors scooter are wired in 4 batteries in series to get 48v and one battery in parallel to add a bit off current to the total?

Led downlight transformer converting to a battery charger/power supply?

I know everyone will just say make the Ible and be done with it, but... I got a bunch of 11.5V LED downlight transformers, 35-105W. Upon inspection I realised their design is dirt simple but quite effective. Switchmode for the beginners so to say LOL The pros: Changing the output voltage is as simple as adding or removing windings from the output transformer. In my first test I was able to go up to 20V with no problems by adding a few turns and down to 5V by replacing the secondary with far less but thicker windings - impressive 12A until my windings started to produce smoke LOL Only imple parts, no microcontroller or other complicated stuff like opto couplers... The big con: These transformers are about 20 years old, so I would say first or second generation of LED transformers. That means I have no clue if something very similar or even identical can still be bought in shops or online. And what is the point of an Ible that noone can do because the main ingredient is nowhere to be found? I can take some pics of the circuit board later on for comparison but it would be great if some people with LED downlight transformers could provide some pics too. If it turns out other transformers are still in the same simple design I would like to use all provided for an Instructable. Credits for the pics will be left if you want or simply add your username to the pic as a watermark or such.

Trying to use relays with a electronic momentary to latching converter. Relays are tripping the latching converter?

I am trying to use this devise,   to turn on a relay attached to a positive wire from a blinker can that sends the signal to the corresponding light. I have two in parallel so I can turn on and off a LH and a RH light with a momentary switch. (can't use a regular on off switch). It works perfectly when attached to its own power supply. I am using this in on a 12 volt system that has some other relays running various things in the system. when I hook this into the system, even directly from the battery, activating the other relays turns the relays on attached to this devise. I suspect it to be noise since it works great on its own power supply. I Tried running the power lead through a resistor and capacitor to help isolate the loop but didn't work. This is stretching my understanding of electricity. What I think I am looking for is how to wire this to isolate it's power +/- circuit from the rest of the system. Otherwise suggestions on how to trouble shoot. I know it is best to add a diagram but I don't know how to make one.

Need help searching for information.. SEO related? Answered

I need help finding a website, I've tried dozens of search terms and not come up with what I've needed, so posted in the hope that someone knew of a site like I'm describing or could offer better search terms. Since SEO (search engine optimisation) is such a profitable business all I'm getting is companies trying to sell me SEO services. What I'm after.... Is a site that you paste a URL and tell it search terms and it does searches at the top 5 or 10 search engines then tells you the ranking of your site with those search terms at those 5 or 10 search engines. (I want to find out the google, ask, yahoo etc ranking of one of my instructables, depending on the search terms used) This service MUST exist, I just can't find it :( If it doesn't exist, I'll bloody well write my own site to do it as I can't be the only one that wants to do this :p

More questions about an office shredder than you might expect :)

EDIT: I ruined it so I will not be fixing it. But I'm sure this gets typed into Google a lot so if you reply it will help others... I recently received one of those big (ish) office paper shredders from a company of a relative of mine to take apart (they know me... :) because it wasn't working like it was supposed to. After having the idea of fixing and selling it, I read online and figured out that the shredder had never been oiled, so I did that. But the shredder (motor) keeps heating up, like A TON compared to the 12-15 sheets it's supposed to handle. I can shred maybe 4 sheets at a time maybe 20 in total before it shuts down in the middle of the operation. I think this might be for overheating protection. Does anyone know what would make the motor heat up so much? Maybe paper dust got into the motor/bearings and makes it work extra hard? And it's not like I can turn it by hand because of these gears. I think it's a brushless motor but it's hard to tell because it's very compact inside. I do know that after it had shut down, I stopped working on it for other reasons, but after two whole hours I came back to work on it and was shocked to find out the motor was slightly warm! Anyone know? I can't find any more info on Google. Thanks!

ESP8266 version 13 DIP switch

Hi, I bought a kit that uses an ESP8266 Arduino expansion board (shield) that has a version 13 ESP8266 module on it. That expansion board is not a standard ESP8266 board. It has an unusual 2-pole DIP switch on it that can be set to "ON" or "1-2". I need to understand what the 2-pole DP switch does and I need to understand the electrical connections it is connected to. There are many instructables about the standard ESP8266, but I cannot find any details about that DIP switch in a version 13 ESP8266 arduino expansion board. Can you please tell me where the DIP switch connects to and why it is needed. Thank you

Upgraded a 12vac to 24vac z-wave thermostat for A/C unit also adding transformer???

I decided to install a Z-wave Thermostat after an old ordinary one failed to work, It worked fine with home automation and all, apart from it being 24vac thermostat but receiving only 12vac from the motherboard (I was forced to change the batteries every 3 months), To make life easier (and not have to change batteries) I ended up doing  the stupid thing tying to Upgrade from 12vac to 24vac adding a transformer, it worked fine for the first 5 mins and then stopped, it was then that I realised I may have overloaded the mother board, My question is, is there a quick fix for this? or do I have to replace the whole motherboard?, if so which one?

Why does my Arduino script do the opposite of what I want? Answered

Hey out there! I am trying to write a code for an Arduino project I am working on. I am using an ultrasonic proximity sensor and an arduino nano clone. What I want is that when the object it detects is under 50cm an led turns on. When it senses an object farther than 50cm I want theLED to go off. Below is the script I wrote. The problem is it does the opposite of what I want(objects >50 LED goes on, objects <50 LED goes off). Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! #define trigPin 3 #define echoPin 9 int LED = 12; void setup() {   Serial.begin (9600);   pinMode(trigPin, OUTPUT);   pinMode(echoPin, INPUT);   pinMode(LED, OUTPUT); } void loop() {   float duration, distance;   digitalWrite(trigPin, LOW);   delayMicroseconds(2);   digitalWrite(trigPin, HIGH);   delayMicroseconds(10);   digitalWrite(trigPin, LOW);     duration = pulseIn(echoPin, HIGH);   distance = (duration / 2) * 0.0344;     if (distance >= 50){     Serial.print("Distance = ");     Serial.println("Out of range");     digitalWrite(LED, LOW);   }   else {     Serial.print("Distance = ");     Serial.print(distance);     Serial.println(" cm");     digitalWrite(LED, HIGH);     delay(500);   }   delay(500); }

Instructables not updated

Last night, about 2300 PST, I posted an Instructable I've been drafting for a couple weeks now.  It has been over 15 hours, and the Instructable still fails to show up in my profile feed, and in the main page under recent Instructables, It also shows it as being a draft in the summary view of the menu. But inside the profile there is a link to it as an Instructable, it just does not show up on the feed. My other Instructables each showed up almost immediately after publishing. Is there some kind of problem with the system, or did I hit an update cycle just after it finished or something?

BRIDGE RECTIFIER ? used electronic transformers 240AC in, 65va max - 12AC out,, to power LED strip lights?

Hi, I need help to understand what I would need to use a bunch of these (free) old transformers to power various 12vdc LED strip lights in my garage.          I have read-up on the subject of using a bridge rectifier in each circuit to convert the AC to DC,,, BUT,, being completely useless at formula / algebra / maths, I cannot work out which bridge rectifier would work for me. I can adjust the length of LED strip to suit, but the longer - the better!  The LED strips I have are 5m long, 300leds, & the specs say 5amp for the full length. So, is there a bridge rectifier available to buy, what number is it? (same if I need anything else)  Please help,, and try not to baffle me with techy science.  Many thanks.

I want to make a peg leg for a kitten

I found a kitten at my in the parking lot at my job and one of her front paws doesn't work. She can use her shoulder but her wrist is like a cooked noodle. I took her to the vet and he said he wrist didn't form correctly and that it's permanent. He said it doesn't hurt her and to just leave it alone. She gets around ok and somewhat uses the bad leg but when i bandaged it up( straws and gauze) she seemed to get around better. But the bandaged leg slips on the tiles so I was thinking I'd like to fashion up a little prosthetic "foot" for her. Maybe something that can strap on just above where it goes all floppy with a slip proof tip on it. It would need to fit around/over/beside her paw. Maybe a removable cast that her leg fits into...I don't know. I don't want to spend alot of money because she may not want to use it but i figured it was worth a try. I added some pictures so you can see her paw, might help with design concepts. Any suggestions?

Children's Electric Car

I started to build a pedal car for my granddaughter and fell victim to "Project Creep". What started off as a simple, standard style pedal car modeled on a Type 59 Bugatti grew to a 6' long soapbox style car that will need an electric motor to move it.  I am a DIY guy and i have the plans, materials lists (it will be wood) and motivation.  What I don't have is a parts list for the electrical components nor do i have any idea how big the motor should be, e.g. 500W, 750W,750 gigawatts.  I wish there was just a kit that had all the components from accelerator pedals, gears, motor and a way to connect the whole thing to the 16" bicycle tires.  I don't need it to go 20MPH (she'll be 4 by the time I'm finished) but i don't want flimsy - i tend to overbuild things: why use two bolts when three will do? So, the question is what do i need and where do i get it - the first part is the most important.  I promise i will document the whole project with pics and words from concept to test drive - but i need help.

A question about LEDs? Answered

Hi all first post. Called fairy lights, rain drops, peals, party strings. They come in all different colors, lengths and price points; sold on Amazon and eBay. I cannot find them individually and I can't locate any information on them. My multi-meter needs to be replaced I can't really trust it and I want to cut a string making  different lengths. The transformer that came with 12volt 1amp, will I need to put a resister in line? Their in parallel but I don't know if is the cathode or the anode that has the double wire. Does that matter? It's possible that they are the pico/micro size chips encased in a clear resin. There is approx 300 leds on the string aprox. 4 per ft.

UPS battery backup as car inverter?

I hope this isn't a dumb question, but if I were to take an old UPS unit, remove the battery, wire a 12V lighter socket plug to the battery cables in the UPS, and plug it in to the car, would it convert the 12V DC to 120V AC while the car is running? And if it worked would it draw too much power or damage anything? I wouldn't use this to run anything with a motor, just a laptop charger and maybe a light. Thanks! :)
