sawing 1 1/4" EMT?

Hi everyone, I have found a local store close to my home that will sell me electrical metal tubing, but they will not cut it (they only sell it in 10'-long tubes). They have told me that they have a hacksaw in the back I can use to do it myself, but since I am just kid I thought they might be kidding me. Is it feasible to cut 1 1/4" electric metal tubing with a hack saw? The tubing looks pretty thick to me and I would need to make three different cuts. Thank you for any advice, James

How many RPM does it take to reverse the process of a 1.5V DC Motor? Answered

I excavated a toy train and pulled out a 1.5V DC Motor. I have not found a use for its motion, so I was thinking of reversing the process and creating a hand crank flashlight. But should I hand crank? How many RPM would it take to generate its standard voltage? Thank you for your answers.

Subwoofer output from my creative card??

Hey guys, can someone help me with this?? I have one of these sound cards, as you can see in the picture. It's worked pretty good for me for the past couple of years, but usually the subwoofer output comes either straight from the normal 2 channel stereo output on the card, piggybacked onto the cable that goes to my stereo and then that goes to my sub amp. Either that or right now I have the subwoofer amp hooked up to the line-level subwoofer output on my surround reciever, but it's still 2 channel audio. I've recently been fiddling around with my sound card, attempting to get the subwoofer output on it working. I've tried the black socket on the sound card with a 2 channel 3.5mm to RCA cord and apparently it's the rear channels as the subwoofer volume slider didn't do anything in my creative control panel, and according to a pdf I found online for my sound card, the S/PDIF socket also functions as the center/subwoofer outputs when not being used for S/PDIF. I've tried a 2 channel and also a "3 ring" 3.5mm cable I have for a camcorder (As I believe some of the cables that are SUPPOSED to go with this card, have 3 ring contacts on SOME of the cables). Alas, all I've been able to do is get a loud humming sound out of the connections, doesn't matter what rca channel the subwoofer is plugged into, it hums VERY loudly and absolutely no sound what-so-ever. Does ANYONE have any clue as to what I do to get subwoofer output from the card?!? Heres a link to the PDF describing what each port is for under "Creative Sound Blaster Live! Digital Entertainment 5.1 Creative Audio Software" and then the submenu "Installing sound blaster Live@ Player 5.1" and the next submenu "Connecting Related Peripherals" and that page describes what each port is for. files2.europe.creative.com/manualdn/Manuals/TSD/790/English.pdf

Japan Day 1

(I am planning on doing a forum post for each day of my trip in Japan. The first few days will just be copy pasted from my blog (but now with pictures, and image notes!), and after that I will type up the entry I kept for each day in my journal)I am writing this all on my eee pc, and, while I am getting the hang of this tiny keyboard, typing mistakes are common. I am also in various states of mental functioning so excuse any grammatical errors.I woke up at around 6:45 on Thursday morning. I had been feeling a bit under the weather, and was slightly congested. I really hoped that I did not catch something right before my trip. I woke up the other interns (Bilal, Josh, and Paul), because I knew they would be very sad and might cry, if I did not give them the last chance to say goodbye to me. We did a 4 way shoulder-tap, the universe imploded, and I was off.As I walked down Clementina I realized that it would be the last time I smelled that poo stench on the street. I had mixed feelings about this. The BART ride to SFO was very uneventful. Check in was amazingly fast. The line was short and moved quickly. I had almost everything I was taking with me in my carry-on. There was nothing in my checked baggage but knives and lint (one knife & one swiss tech mulikey). Anyway the whole process of checking in took about 15 minutes. The security checkpoint was even faster. There was no line, and for the first time in a long time I didn't set off the metal detector. I had shown up three hours before my flight to be safe, and I was now left with two hours and forty minutes to kill.I went to the currency exchange and turned 300$ into 27,000 yen. The Lonely Planet guidebook I have (which was printed just last year), has the exchange rate of one USD to 120 Yen, at the exchange booth they offered about 98 Yen for a dollar, google says the current rates are 107 yen to a dollar. Stupid weak American money. Anyway, I used ten dollars which I did not convert to yen to buy an english muffin breakfast sandwich and a gatorade. I went to my terminal, and accidentally dropped the barely touched sandwich on the floor while removing my backpack. I was hungry :(I read for two hours then boarded the plane at around 11. There were many people coughing on this eleven hour flight, so I did not have high hopes for avoiding sickness. Read some more on the flight, watched iron man in Japanese, watched iron man in english, and watched be kind rewind. They served two decent meals, and a few snacks in between. Ten hours later when we were finally over Japan, I went to the back of the plane, and stared out the window in the emergency exit door to get my first view of Japan. We landed around 2 pm on Friday. It was hot, so very hot (humid too). I filled out my customs form, got fingerprinted, and photographed, and made my way over to the baggage claim to pick up my knives. I made my way out of the airport to the train, and bought a ticket for what I hoped was a kanayama station bound train. Turns out it was. (cue the "ding" sound that is played on the audio tracks for slideshows, when it is time to change the slide). The first few pictures are of Kanayama station. There was a cool little inflatable pool, with little kids in miniature paddle boats. They also had a bunch of those water mist sprayers that people stand in front of to cool off.I relaxed at the train station for a bit before I caught the number 12 bus. I took it to the Ishikawa Bashi stop, and got off. I used a pay phone to call up Changmi who I had found on couchsurfing.com. I actually set up the couchsurf with her husband (who was out of town) who said it would be ok for me to stay, so I think she was a little surprised when I called. She said that she was currently hosting two couples who each had a small child. It was cool if I stayed, but it would be crowded. She picked me up at the nearest intersection with her mother, one of the couples, and their child in the car.We drove to downtown Nagoya and they let us out. Changmi and her mother were going somewhere, so I hung out with Sarah, Seba, and their daughter Maya. They were couchsurfers from France who had been in Japan for a couple of weeks. We walked around central park in downtown Nagoya for a bit. There is the large TV tower at one end of the park, and a bunch of art pieces scattered about randomly (metal taco boat thing). We went and got dinner, which I later found out to be pig intestines, with an egg, over rice. It was pretty good. After eating we took the subway back to Changmi's house and slept.Japan Day 2

Do I need a voltage regulator in this circuit?

Hi, I am trying to build a portable usb charger the outputs 5V when input is 1.5 or 3 Volts. I found this step up converter: goo.gl/RAV9dC The spec for the converter state that the input voltage is 1V to 10V, and the out put Voltage is -1.5V to -10V and 3V to 10V. I frankly don't know how to interpret this information. It seems to me that by inputting 1.5V, the output will be 10V. So I am wondering if am right, and IF I am, then do I need to put in a 5V voltage regulator in the circuit? Thanks!

On the Origin Of The Universe (or at least our part of it...)

In the course of a conversation in the chatroom, I triggered myself to go look up old RFC's. I found http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc-sidx1.html . It's kind of like stumbling across Moses' chicken-scrawled first drafts of Genesis...A couple of selected quotes,From RFC-6 (A Conversation with Bob Kahn), "BB&N; is prepared to convert 6, 7, 8, or 9 bit character codes into 8-bit ASCII for transmission and convert again upon assembly at the destination IMP." So ASCII was not a standard data protocol yet. From RFC-82 (Network Meeting Notes), "ARPA will not pay for the coffee and pastry being served, so please chip in to help me pay for it."[Edit 23 Jul 2009: Fixed URL above to eliminate spurious period.]

mission of sputnik 1

Russian technology satellite. One launch, 1957.10.04. Tikhonravov's 1.4 metric ton ISZ satellite was to have been launched by the new R-7 ICBM as the Soviet Union's first satellite, during the International Geophysical Year.    But it was not ready in time, so Korolev hurriedly developed Sputnik 1 as a replacement. It became the first artificial satellite of the earth. Sputnik 1 had 1 watt of power, producing an 0.4 second duration signal on the 7 and 15 m bands. Four antennae were deployed at 35 degree angles. Power was provided by three silver-zinc batteries. Thermo-regulation was by a ventilator. The 580 mm sphere had a mass of 83 kg and was made of highly polished Aluminum AMG6T alloy 2 mm thick. It was built without drawings due to the quick time schedule. Korolev was everywhere, supervising all aspects of its construction. It functioned for 21 days.      AKA: PS-1. Gross mass: 84 kg (185 lb). First date: 1957-10-04. Number: 1 .     the word sputnik is russian word for traveller

Then you pull the trigger back and repeat.  Its nothing speicial, I can't even work on it now because of the railgun though.

The Thought Bunker #1

Hello! I am doing a new Forum Topic train. This one involves some thinking. But it's not math! It's the fun thinking. The kind you can talk and laugh(and in this case, maybe yawn) about. So, what do you say? This week's Thought Bunker: If everyone in the world were to yawn at the same exact time, would Earth have enough oxygen to sustain all of us? Well, what do you think? Tell us! And now for this weeks best-thought:   Nov 4, 2009. 4:33 PMSeleziona says:  yes, everybody breathes normally, no oxygen shortages, and yawning takes a little more air, but not too much. So earth would have enough oxygen, and half of the world is asleep when we are awake, so it would be highly improbable
