What are the effects of powering a 14 volt system with 12 volts?

I have some older, but nice yamaha computer speakers. there is an external transformer, and it says the out put is 14v dc, 800 mA. I am wanting to skip the transformer, and us a 12 volt sealed led acid battery battery to power them, placing it after the transformer. I would prefer to use the 12v battery as a 12v 5 ah battery is around 25-35 dollars, and a 14.4v 2ah battery is around 70 dollars. Would this do any damage to the amplifier circuit within ? What effects would this have on the sound quality of the speakers? Would I be able to be switch from 12v dc, skipping the transformer, and plugged into the wall using the tranformer if i wired it to be able to do so, and would that have any long term effects on the speaker?

Could a 1500-2000 mA draw from a car battery (in a car) for 14 hours be a problem? Answered

I want to be able to play my portable PS2 on the ride to Colorado in February. It's a fourteen hour drive. I would probably play much of the way up. It will draw 1.5-2 amps. Will this be a problem? Will it cause problems for the battery? Can it handle that for 10 or so hours, with stops in between? Oh yeah, duh! It will draw the full twelve volts. I think the PS2 uses 8.5, but 12v comes out, so... Help?

How do you drop a 14 volt DC source to a lower voltage?

This is for a fan inside my older stereo that I just replaced. It is quite loud and irritating spinning as fast as it does. I previously ran a 12 volt DC fan off of a 4.5 volt DC source and it was quieter and slower. So how can I lower the 14 volt DC?

12volt battery to 5volt miniUSB

I'd like to be able to charge my MP3 player on my motorcycle, running off the power of the motorcycle. The motorcycle will put out 12.1 volts or so off, and around 14 volts running. What is required to bring that down to 5 volts? Will a simple voltage regulator be enough? The MP3 player will be controlling the amount of current going to it, so I don't need to worry about that, right? Thanks Jake

L.E.D desk lamp run on 12 volt? Answered

So I have an L.E.D desk lamp that plugs into the wall. It is hardwired into a power adapter witch  converts 120 volt to an output of 14 volts, If I cut off the adapter can they be run straight off a 12 volt battery. It is very bright so some lost light is okay, I fried the inverter for my cabin and need some light.

Solar??? Batteries??? controller???

I want to get these 12v solar battery chargers they come with alligator clamps to hook to the battery. i want to get enough for around 150 volts so how would i hook the solar panels in series, and do i need a controller for each battery? and how would i rig that up and how can I get it going into all the 12 volt batteries without any damage to the batteries etc. And can this be done for less than $400 if the solar panels are $30 each and the batteries are $14 each. How to Re-route 9 Volt Batterie from Smoke Detector

Hello, We have 14 feet high ceilings and smoke detectors in 4 rooms at that height. Not wanting to crawl up the ladder to switch the 9 Volt batteries, one would think you could simplify this task. Use a 9 volt battery connector to connect to the battery ports in the smoke detectors, a wire each to a central point in the house, such as a hall closet, where each wire ends in a 9 volt battery box. I can find various 9 volt battery connectors to purchase, have umpteen yards of low voltage wire (from sprinkler system installation). What I don't know is, is there a limitation on the length of wire I can have a 9 volt battery on one end, and the smoke detector on the other end? Thank you. Stefan

Modded Fart Machine, plays the 14-20 kilohertz sound

Ok, because I am not so tech savy in circuitry, I am willing to give my first daughter's virginity and an Island in Dubai to the person that can show me how to build this: Ok, the idea is a Modded fart machine that plays that intensely annoying high pitched sound that only young people can hear, between 14 and 20 kilohertz...hopefully somebody will know how to switch the programmed chips and utilize the fart machine's speaker and remote control system. It would also be quite helpful if you could add a 9-volt battery with a resistor for long life, and possibly put in a more powerful speaker for maximum annoyance.

I have a 14 volt car electrical system (standard) How can I increase the voltage back up to 14 and prevent it from dropping due to car audio? Adding a battery will only provide a small amount of time and therefore not provide a well made solution.

Will a switching regulator charge an Ipod? Answered

I have a 16 gb Ipod Touch and I wanted to be able to charge it from an old laptop battery that is 14 volts. I did not like the idea of using a 7805 because it is so wasteful, so I was thinking of using a switching regulator like this one because it has an efficiency of 85% @ 14 volts.;=LM2591HVT-5.0-ND Something in me is just worried that because its switching on and off really fast to achieve the voltage that it will not work for charging my Ipod, so I came here to ask "will it work and is it the best option?"

Best, cheapest way to utilize a 10 volt, 6 amp solar panel?

Hey Instructables friends! So I have 20 solar cells that are .5 volts each and 6 amps. I plan to connect them in series to give me a 10 volt, 6 amp panel. I want to use the panel in my car to maintain the car battery and power my usb devices and be a general backup power source. The problem is that I am still new to electronics and I can't think of a cost effective, safe, and reliable way to utilize this panel. I need at least 14 volts out of the panel if I am to connect it to the car battery and even then I'm not sure how to limit the charge (I only want 1 amp maintaining the battery) and use the remaining output for other things. Any ideas are greatly appreciated! I also want to think of a free way to do this if possible.

I want to combine 2 - 12 volt 12 amp hour sealed lead acid battery's with 2 - 12 volt 50 sealed lead acid battery's

I want to extend my driving distance I know if I got with 4 - 12 volt 50 sealed lead acid battery's it will take 14 hours to charge the set of 4 and I do not know even if I bought a new 2 amp hour charger that it the charger will last very long being run for that long of time I wan to combine 2 - 12 volt 12 amp hour sealed lead acid battery's with 2 - 12 volt 50 sealed lead acid battery's is this a safe thing to do will the higher amp lead acid battery's do damage to the lesser one's ? this set up is for a E-bike which takes just under 25 amp hour draw I've seen the draw get into the first bar of red but only in winter when it's rile cold say about - 47 Celsius

What is the proper voltage/amperage to charge a 12 volt, 12 amp lead-acid scooter battery? Answered

I picked up a little electric scooter from craigslist yesterday, but I can't seem to find any info online about what charger to use.  It seems to have been some sort of promotional item, as the only brand name on the thing is "Hansen's Diet Soda." I believe the battery is lead-acid, 12 volt, 12 amp.  My limited understanding of battery charging suggests that I should go with about 12-14 volts at about 1.2-1.5 amps.  Is that right?  What would you recommend?

I have SPDT with 12 volts hooked to 2 LED strips of the same reel, I just cut them. I need some input

I have some 12 volt LED strips, well I cut and made two and wired them to  SPDT on-off-on toggle switch. Then I wired a LED indicator LED to the outside of the box to indicate one was on, not both(don't ask me why,lol). I used a 7812 to get 12 volts cause the walwart was to high, my problem is I get the 12 volts from the side I don't have the indicator light which I know now is taking away from the 12 volts from the other side I have the indicator LED to, my question is, how do I wire it so I don't have that voltage drop? Make the voltage coming in higher? Like 14 volts? That won't hurt the LED srtrips rated for 12 volts will it? I would appreciate an answer, I'm pretty green and limit my projects to only what I know but I want to learn.I have all kinds of components from resistors to caps to transistors. Sicerely Angelo  P.S. Why doesn't my windmill generator seem to charge the batteries?

Hi there, I figured Id post here because I have no one to ask and answers aren't obvious from googling. The connection is as follows: - (0 Volts to 40 Volts open voltage) Windmill to a 12 Volt Battery. - (0 Volts to 20 Volts open voltage) Solar Panel to a 12 Volt Battery. A solar panel has an open voltage @ 19.95 Vdc and delivering 0 amps.  The panel is not connected.   Then I connect the panel to the 12 Volt Battery.  Now, the solar panel now shows a voltage of 14 V and delivering 2 amps into the battery. That makes sense to me.  When connecting the solar panel to the battery, the system is now "on load", so the voltage drops.  But because the voltage drops, the amperage is being sent into the battery. ---- Now,  The windmill has an open voltage between 0 and 40 vdc.  On average it shows 20 volts when spinning. 40 volts when its faster.  Its known that it takes 14.1 volts to start charging a battery.   So, now lets assume the windmill is spinning @ 40 volts open voltage.   I connect the windmill to the battery.  For under a second, I see amperage go from the windmill to the battery.   The amperage amount is 3 amps for 1/4 a second, 0.6 2/4 of a second, then eventually 0. The voltage after connecting the windmill to the battery is the same as the battery voltage.  In my eyes, its not charging the battery, because amperage dropped to 0. As a side note, as soon as I connect the windmill to the battery, the generator/turbine, also slows down in speed.   I am also curious to know why it is slowing down as well.   Anyone have any ideas? - U

How to get 9 volt from a computer power supply? Answered

To save some energy i thought it would make sense to remove all those small powersupplys. They all transform pricey power (24 eurocents per kw/h here) into heat. However, in my computer is a powersupply that actually is very efficient, also, if i take more energy from it, it wouldn't have much more loss. Right now my computer uses about 54 watts if idle (i selected the components to be as efficient as possible). My DSL-Router uses 14 watts, but i guess most of it goes away as heat in it's own little PSU. The DSL-Router needs 12 volt and my computers PSU can deliver that, and since the DSL-Router is only needed when the computer is switched on i plan to use the computers PSU to power it. I have a pair of speakers with an internal PSU and AMP. After opening them i saw that both are on separated boards. The PSU gives 9 volt to the AMP and gets quite hot while doing it. The problem: as far as i know there is no 9 volt power connection in the computers PSU :(.

power supplies in series question

Just asking before I blow up 2 of my power supplies that I just made/salvaged/fixed/modified. I need 19 volts at 2.95 amps (practically 3) for a laptop that I found (yay dumpster diving, don't worry I'm not a guy who steals identity, it was actually my dad's lab and they're throwing away a bunch of stuff, it's a goldmine!) and it was marked dead. I pull out the battery and it has 0 charge. It had no charging adapter, so can I just make one? I have to power supplies, one from a computer that I modified and an adjustable one the goes up to about 15 volts at 6 amps (and they were throwing it away! it only need a new fuse). After all of that background info, here's my question: can i put the 5 volts from the comp supply in series with the 14 volts from my adjustable supply to get 19 volts at enough amps to power on this laptop? I don't want to buy a 60 dollar charger just to find out the comps broken cause of something else.

I need Magnets arrangement for a wind power using car alternator N42 (20x10x2.5mm) magnets are glued on modified rotor ?

Hi all, I am modifying a car alternator to a PMG .The winding system is 3 phases the diodes are still connected to have a DC voltage and the rotor circuit has thrown away. The rotor have been machined and a steel pipe is weld on it to adjust the diameter.On the surface of the steel pipe I glue the 14 N42 (20x10x2.5 mm) magnets N & S pole alternately to have 7 pair of N&S poles.The number of poles is 14/ph.I am not getting good result at 1150 rpm it gives 15 volts & at 1450 rpm --> 20 volts.But i need around 15 Volts at 300 rpm how could I get it? Please advise magnet arrangement note that gap between magnets and stator is about 2mm. Hasen

Help with LM741 op-amp? Answered

Just to test it out, I hooked up a voltage follower with a LM741 Op-amp. But, when I measure the voltages, it doesn't work. When I have problems with such simple circuits, it makes me want to kick a small animal. Please, save the small animals, help me with my circuit. When I measure Vout, I expected something somewhere around 7-8 volts, but I'm actually getting 13-14 volts. I also tried changing the resistors in the voltage divider, but the output did not change. I'm getting my power from an unregulated 12v 1A wall transformer, but I measured it at around 15v unloaded. I replaced the chip once to rule out static electricity as the problem, and I got an output 0.1 volt higher. Any ideas?

Calculate capacitance across full wave bridge rectifier? Answered

OK,so I need an AC to DC converter.I used a 9 Volts transformer to convert 220VAC to 9VAC,then rectified it to 9VDC using a full wave bridge rectifier(IN4007).I need to know the value of capacitance which is to be connected to the 9 volt DC output(I heard somewhere that its got by multiplying the forward current*5 then dividing it by input voltage to the rectifier and the result is obtained in Farads........well I'm not sure if this is right and I need clarification).I've currently used a 1000uf capacitor and my multimeter shows the dc output from the bridge as 14 volts which is really confusing because before I used the capacitor it showed 9 volts.I really need a way to deal with capacitance.Pls do help me. I've added some pics(not much of help but.....)

Why do I get a voltage drop from my solar panels....? Answered

I am building my own solar panels and installing them as I go. So far I have mounted three 70 watt panels. I have a twenty amp controller and a 1500 watt pure sine wave inverter. With the array switched on and connected to the batteries (8 x12 volt 134AH) via the controller everything seems fine with a steady 13 -14 volt charge coming through. But when I connect the inverter the PV volts drop to around six and seven volts....The batteries are wired in parrale but not directly to each other. Instead I connected them to a buss bar hoping for equel drain and charge... I then connected the wires from controller and inverter to the bars... I thought this may have been the problem so swapped them all around having the controller wires to the battteries, then the inverter directly to the batteries... It made no difference and the voltages remained the same....I am hoping now that the reason maybe that I do not have enough panels to power the system and as I add more panels the voltage will rise...... l Any thoughts on this will be very welcome.....?

Increase voltage in my 12v Ryobi drill?

I read the inspiring post Hot Rodding a Power Drill Battery by archer6817 and would love to try it. But I have a question.  Can I increase the voltage if I put in new cells,  like 14 or 18 volt?

how can i find out which part of my charger is malfunctioning? Answered

Hello, I am desperate for help. I have a PWR+ charger for my laptop I purchased a few months ago, today it stopped working. What happened? well the charger still has some function, when I checked it with my voltmeter the output varied from 3 to 6 volts, the little LED on the charger was pulsating, not rapidly, but in short 1 second intervals. Could this be a problem with the voltage regulator? The required amount of power that a normal charger for my laptop outputs is a steady 14 volts, not sure about the current. Now my charger is useless and I don't want to spend another 30 bucks to get a new one, please help. Thanks in advance.

never mind I figured out how to wire it correctly!!

I have a generator that puts out 14 dc volts when you pedal fast on a bike. I need to wire it to both a light and a rechargeable battery pack.  The switch has 3 contacts on each side for a total of 6. I want to be able to switch the light off so the battery pack gets charged during the day. The light has wires coming from it. Please Help!!!

What is a 4 pin power connector that can handle a lot of current? Answered

For a project powering red, blue, and green LEDs, with a common positive, I am hoping to power around 250 LEDs with around 5 amps. This means that each wire needs to be able to handle 5 amps of current at 12 volts (or 60 Watts), with the other three wires acting as grounds. I've looked at PC peripheral molex connectors, capable of handling around 5-8 amps however that is over all four wires. I need something stronger, most molex connectors use 20 gauge wire (which handles 1.5 amps), while the national electrical code suggests a 14 gauge wire to handle 5.9 Amps. It doesn't matter to me what the connector is supposed to be used for, if it's an audio plug, power plug, or whatever, this project will be very jerry-rigged. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for a suitable plug.

LED Bike Turnsignal

Hey everybody, this is my first adventure with soldering or LEDs, so hopefully it will go well. I'm planning on making a set of turn signals for my bicycle with two LED arrows which work at 12v, I'll power it with 8 AA and use one momentary switch for each. Does this all seem like it should work? Specs on each piece: arrows : "Mini Arrow Size: 1.50” x 1.50” ,Operational voltage: 12-14 Volt AC/DC" switch: "This momentary switch is perfect for short connections. Normally open and rated 3 amps at 125VAC."

I have a motor from a treadmill and I would like to know what size wire to ues to get the most amp/volts out of it?

What I have is a 17.2 amps ,7099 rpm ,25 c , calss b 2 1/2 hp @ 130 VDC CW rotation. With a drill motor attached I can get 21 v out of it ,today it went into the air a top a 21ft pole and we had a storm come through I had hooked a extention cord to it so I cold get to it on the ground and I was not even getting 5 volts out of it in the height of the wind. It is a 50ft orange12 or 14 gage wire cord . Its hooked up to a blocking dioed that a brother of mine helped me wire via the internetand my load was a 12v battery with 5.95 v charge in it and now it has none. What do I need to do to make it right?

I have been working on a small generator and i need a dynamo to generate the electricity so I did a little experiment to find out what motor i had was most efficient at generating power so I know what I should use a in the upcoming project. On each motor which was spun at the same speed by my Dremel all the results were ordinary except for one motor which surprised me with its super high reading. Upon seeing this I thought it might be my multimeter going dead and giving me false readings i changed out my multimeter and got the same exact readings for the motor. Is this because it really can produce 120 watts or am i doing something wrong? My formula for finding watts was V*A=W the motor was producing around 8.5 amps at 14 volts. I'm pretty sure the formula is correct as well. Help would be appreciated greatly thanks.      Harry

How to mod a toy grade rc car? Answered

I have a mjx 1:14 bmw m3. This things go pretty fast and uses 5 battery=. So it's use 7.4 volt. Now I am thinking to wire 2 4v lead acid battery so it will get 8v and save my money to replace batteries. But I got another Idea. Can I upgrade the stock transistor so I can wire a 9v battery for a serious kick? Don't tell me to save up for hobby grade. They take all the fun because everything is ready made.It is more fun to modify a thing that is not made for modification.

Calculating heating effect.? Answered

I have been experimenting with making a hot wire foam cutter. This needs to be at least 600 mm wide. I have to hand a PSU capable of providing 14 volts at 2 amps (or slightly below) This is 28 watts. Now the question i would like to calculate the heat the Nichrome wire will reach at any given wattage but have no idea if I can do this. I have several wires that work to different levels, resistance of 30R, 4 R, 137R at the length I am using. Any one any  ideas how to calculate the temp or are there too many variables? So far I have worked empirically and arrived at the conclusion I need either around 18 volts at about 3 amps or I need a wire with a resistance of around 7R to suite the power i have available. I do know that the 20+ watts I am generating is just heating the wire to the melting point of the polystyrene foam. The melting point of the foam is apparently around 220 to 240 deg C (internet) At present it isn't cutting fast enough for my project. which required producing 5 mm thick sheets of foam with a reasonable consistency. i am cutting them from a 50 mm thick 1000mm x 500 mm block.

curtis air compressor?

I have a 1925 Curtis Air Compressor and we are rebuilding it to be a working show piece. The General Electric Motor is  running the Curtis Compressor, and we need the manual of the motor/compressor/tank or all of the Information about it that we can get ahold of so it can be rebuilt  to the exact color, wiring , ect, so we can put it back to its' original  origin. Here is the information from the plate that was barely  readable. Help me reduce my carbon footprint and big fat gut!

So I'm trying to arrange a set up where every morning I pedal my bike, in a training stand, attached to a car alternator, attached to a deep cycle battery which will ultimately be feeding all those computer peripherals that I have scattered across my desk. No exercise, no DSL, etc. (And no, I don't do subsistence farming in my back yard (yet) so I know I'm not really doing much environmentally besides reminding myself how much energy all those littler peripherals suck.) Anyhow, I've seen numerous articles where people are easily getting 12-14 volts out of their alternator. At a level of effort that feels like 20 mph on level ground I'm getting maybe 3v. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Grounding Issue in DIY Circuit

Hello everyone, I'm having a bit of a problem getting my LM317 soft-start circuit to function properly. If you'll take a look at my schematic, I've built everything on the schematic up until the relays and diodes get involved (specifically where the output forks into two). In order to check that I soldered the board correctly, I hooked an LED up to where the fork would be to make sure the soft-start worked. Here's where things get funny: If the LED is connected to the rectifier's negative, the LED behaves as I expect it to, with a slow turn-on. However, if I keep the LED connected to the same positive point, but hook the led directly to ground, nothing happens. In fact, using a multimeter showed that no voltage would flow to ground from the positive, but that 14 volts were flowing between the same positive point and negative. I need voltage to flow to ground, this is a ground safety interlock for a welder I'm working on... does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for reading :)

30 minute DIY AM particle-acceleration

Last fall, I verified an initial relationship of resonance between two bifilar wound wires (of any length). The predictable sequence resonates at the following levels - 20 Hz, 30 Hz, 50 Hz (and all multiples of these 3 frequencies). I used a Parallax Propeller Board - with PGEN 2.0 software from Innovationshop in Germany.   This software allows for a waveform built of 32 stacked frequencies to be created and amplified.   I have used it to successfully break the bonds of distilled water - as one of my earlier videos shows 2 years ago. Help with a game system mod?

I'm buying a sega game gear to mod. I want to add an a/v input without using the tv tuner accessory. Is this possible? I cant find it anywhere online, but i did find a pinout and it seems possible. I know i could connect the audio to pins 44 and 45. Would it work if i connected the video in to pin 43? Any help would be appreciated. slowing down my robots 12v motors

 Hi everyone. I have a question I hope someone can help me with regarding my current robot build so I hope this is the right place to ask. I am in the middle of building my own version of a full size K-9 with a few differences that I will be doing an Instructable for when he is completed. I am currently waiting for some parts from EZ Robots to arrive which are due sometime this month (June, 14) and so far I have pretty much completed his body and rolling chassis. The question I want to pose has to do with the rolling chassis/drivetrain. The parts for the chassis have mainly come from a kiddies ride on car which has two 12v, 30w drive motors which produce two fixed forward and reverse speeds (slow 3MPH and fast 5MPH) and a single speed 12v steering motor, connected to a control/radio control receiver box, controlled by a R/C controller and powered by a 12v 7Ah rechargeable battery. The R/C controller will be located inside the body and 2 servos, via the EZ Robots EZ-B controller, will move the joysticks for the chassis movement (one servo for forward and reverse, and the other for left and right). I have this pretty much sorted, but hear is where I need the help . I want to slow all 3 motors down a bit. I would like to have the steering motor turn slower so there is more precise movement via the servo control, and would like to be able to adjust the speed of the drive motors so I can have a slower, almost a crawl, speed while K-9 is roaming the house, and then be able to readjust the speed so he can move quicker around larger area or open spaces. The current "slow" speed is about 3 MPH but it is just a bit to quick to navigate autonomously around my house so I'm looking for a hopefully simple solution. I had an idea of simply splicing through one of the motor wires on each motor and wiring in a 12v potentiometer which I could attach to his control panel and adjust it/them as needed (or even servo controlled, but first things first). Could it be as simple as that or would I need something more? I have also read online about maybe using a PWM but I wouldn't know how to wire it (or them as the case maybe) up. Would using a PWM do what I'm looking to do and would it even work on the set up I have? I am not really experienced in using or installing resistors or soldering circuit boards ect, so a simple "easy for me to do" solution would be great, so any help and advice or solutions anybody here can offer really would be appreciated, and thanks in advance . Would this automatic curtains / blinds controller design work?

Hi all, I have been searching for ways to make an easy and cheap automatic curtains/blinds controller but have not really seen any that actually meets my basic needs but also does not require lots of complex IC components. Please let me know of any instructables I may have missed. So here is my design - hoping everyone can help to validate it and discuss design faults and improvements (mainly to reduce costs). The Requirements: 1) Costs: Total costs should be around $20 per curtain. I think professional systems cost about $100-$200 per curtain controller. 2) Parts: Easy to build and put together with some soldering. Parts are easy to find/buy or substitute for similar components. 3) Function: At least 2 buttons. One UP button and one DOWN button for manual triggering (wireless buttons would be better). 4) Function: One press of Button A fully opens the blinds with the motor stopping at the correct place to avoid damage to the blinds or the motor. The opposite goes for Button B to close the blinds. 5) Function: The controller should never be able to open or close the blinds past the normal safe positions, causing damage. 6) Optional Parts: Complete system is small enough to fit inside the blinds/curtain's cover / awning. I think it should be easy to fit in most covers anyway. Briefly how it should all work: With the curtains rolled up, you would press button A, which would roll the curtains DOWN, then stopping at the correct place (covering the whole window). Pressing button A once again would not do anything or further roll DOWN the curtains. Then, press button B and the curtains should start rolling UP constantly, stopping just before it gets to the top. Pressing button B once again would not do anything or further roll UP the curtains, avoiding damage to curtains or motor. Design/diagram below (sorry for the poor details, i used MS-Visio to draw it out). The Parts/Components (under $30 at time or writing): 1) 5-10kg servo $7 (using 5volts) that can be power in forward or reverse spin. Slow spinning speeds would be best for safe and low power operation? 2) Some hand made adapter to firmly connect the servo motor shaft to the curtain's shaft to spin/roll the curtains ($0 free). 3) A wireless power relay $14, (12 volts) with 2 channels and "constant on power" functions (links below). I guess wired relays are fine, but I would want to hide the wires to the buttons. 4) 2x 5V regulators $2, to reduce the 12v power from the Relay to 5v for the Servo. 5) 2x Magnetic or reed switches $5 (12 volts) that is Normally On (normally connected). 6) 4x Rare earth magnets $1 to work with the reed switches. These are small, thin and easy to hide, but are very strong. 7) A power source for the relay, 4x 18650 batteries?. Should be 12 volts or depending on what relay & servo combo you use. (links below) Construction: 1) Make an adapter to connect the servo to the blind's shaft. I dont have a picture of one or the steps for this as every servo & curtain combo situation will be different, but im sure it should be simple to make. Fail or malfunction of this part would cause too much damage to anything really? 2) For best practice, use temporary wiring to connect all the components together as per diagram and test out the functions as if they were installed in their places and on the blinds. 3) Glue or connect the adapter, curtain shaft and servo shaft together. Also mount the servo firmly somewhere, on the wall or curtain cover so it doesnt end up spinning itself. 4) Position both magnetic switches on the wall, behind and just under the curtain's roll of fabric as per diagram. A lot of testing and playing around will be needed to create the correct gap between each switch and curtain.    Switch A   (Limiter A) will be the most difficult to position. It will be used to stop the servo from rolling the blinds too far down. This means the magnet glued on the blinds is up high on top, which will be rolled inside layers of fabric and may spin close to Limiter A multiple times which may cut the circuit/power earlier than intended as the magnet spins round and round. Limiter B should be easier. 5) Wire the 2 channels on the relay to the Servo and the Limiters. The 5V regulators goes between both channels of the Relay's power OUT and the Servo's two power Inputs. Screw or glue the relay to somewhere firm like inside the curtain covers. 6) Glue the rare earth magnets to the desired positions, or sew them on if you dont trust the glue. The magnets will physically cut the power to the servo by activating the Magnetic reed switches, so using 2 magnets would be even better, just incase the servo you use spins really fast or has a lag. 7) Connect the relay to the battery/power cable. Of course double check all is good before adding power. In my case, I will have 12v power cables available to use. 8) Put the curtain cover back on to hide everything. Hopefully you did not create creases in the curtain fabric where the magnets are glued. Oh and maybe remove the curtain draw strings (used to pull up & down the curtains) to avoid breaking the Servo? Detailed explanation of how it should work: - The blinds are fully rolled up. - Press Button A once, Relay provides power to Channel A, Servo spins clockwise constantly (rolling down the curtain). - Servo's positive line A is cut (circuit open) when Magnet A rolls out and comes close to Limiter A. Relay is still outputting power to Channel A but no power goes to the Servo. - Press Button A once again, the Servo should not do anything. The Relay should then stop outputting power to Channel A. - Further presses of Button A does nothing but toggles Channel A's power on and off. Magnet A & Limiter A still disabling power to the Servo. - Press Button B once, Relay provides power to Channel B, Servo spins anti-clockwise constantly (rolling UP the curtain). - Servo's positive line B is cut when Magnet B rolls up close to Limiter B. Relay is still outputting power to Channel B. - Press Button B once again, the Servo should not do anything. - With this "latch" functionality of the Relay (see link below and product details), it is also possible to stop the curtains mid way, which might be useful for some people, i dont think i will use it. For future upgrades: I think it would be possible to control this controller from a PC program, by directly connecting IO cables to the Relay's button A & B on the PCB. Sending pulses from the PC as though it were remote button presses. Or just bring the remote to the PC's IO ports and connect there. Would anyone disagree? The battery on my Volvo keeps dying. How should I determine and fix the problem? Answered

I have a 1996 Volvo 850 GTL Wagon.  We drive it infrequently, averaging 2 trips per week.  If it isn't driven in 10 - 14 days, the battery will invariably be dead, and I'll need to jump start it, or charge it with a trickle charger overnight.   At first, I thought the battery was worn out even though it was wasn't quite to the end of its warranty period.  I replaced it, but this didn't solve the problem. Next, I thought our typically short trips weren't allowing the battery to fully charge, so I specifically changed my driving habits and used the trickle charger to top up the battery on a regular basis.  After doing this, the battery would measure in the 12.3 to 12.6 V range, but after two weeks without driving would be again be dead, measuring in the 11 V or lower range.  Even after needing a jump-start, the battery will start the car again after just 5 minutes of driving. I've measured the steady-state current draw from the battery after the car has been off for several minutes to several hours using both a clamp-on style ammeter (<0.1 amps; lowest the clamp-on could measure) and an inline current meter between the negative terminal and the negative terminal's clamp (40 mA). 40 mA seems reasonable from what I can find online, and shouldn't be enough to drain the battery over 2 weeks.   So, I have an 11-month old battery that won't hold a charge for two weeks, and I'm fairly confident there's no abnormal current draws from the car.  Should I replace the battery again and hope for the best?  Is there any truth (and references!) to claims that a lead-acid battery once drained too low can never recover? Updated with new information for the various suggestions below: After fully charging the battery, I disconnected it for 48 hours.  It remained at 12.6 volts over the entire period, and when I reconnected it, easily started the car. I don't suspect the alternator:  When the car is running, 5-6 amps flows into the battery and the voltage on the battery is 13.6 V; and if I drive the car once or twice a week, the battery never dies.  I do suspect something with the keyless remote.  I stopped using my keyless remote years ago because I found it too bulky to carry around -- I lock and unlock the car using the key in the door.  Christy still uses her keyless remote.  Recently, she was the last one to drive the car before we went out of town for 10 days.  When we got back, I was positive the battery would be dead, but it started the car without a problem.  So, I ran the experiment of leaving the car unlocked, locked with the key, and locked with the keyless remote.  After a few days, the battery would be dead when locked with they key, but not when locked with the keyless remote or left unlocked.  Frustratingly, I've checked the current draw in all three configurations, and it's 40 mA in each case (and stays that way for several minutes).  For now, I have a solution that keeps the battery from dying if I don't regularly drive the car, but I'd still like to understand what is going on. Updated with solution 2010-09-02 At the car's next regular service, the shop recognized the problem.  On cars of this type and age, the crimp on the positive terminal can fail turning the positive wire to the battery into a resistor rather than a wire.  This is diagnosed by measuring the charging voltage on the battery and giggling the wire (it will jump around, and not remain at the required 13.8 V), and by noticing that the wire itself is hot.  Volvo recently released a fix for this, and previously the shop had to remove the entire wiring harness, at great expense, to fix it.  So, my battery was never getting fully charged, and I've selected the best answer from among the suggestions that my measured charging voltage was too low.
