OFFF 2009

At the 2009 OFFF, International Festival For The Post-Digital Culture, I gave a talk about the DIY movement, and what drives it forward, which was part of the NERDFERENCES PANEL With Eric Wilhelm, Peter Kirn, Gijs Gieskes; curated and presented by Julia Carboneras. You can find a PDF of my slides attached below.

2009 Maker Faire

Our presentation booth details for this year's Bay Area Maker Faire has just arrived and all of us here at Instructables are revved up and rearing to go. We are especially excited that Radioactive_Legos has decided to show off his 48V Electric Bike at our booth; it was a runner-up in the Craftsman Workshop of the Future Contest. If you have an awesome project that you have posted to Instructables and would like the chance to show it off without getting your own booth (having your own booth is awesome, but a hefty time commitment - sometimes it's nice to be able to see the Maker Faire!), contact noahw and let him know! We'll probably have room for your project at the Instructables booth, and we'd love to showcase as many cool user projects as we can. Also! Even though this year's Maker Faire is only now two months away, you still another 10 days to sign up for your very own presentation booth. Sign up at the official Maker Faire website.Whether you're coming to present your work or gawk, we look forward to seeing you!... and for those of you on the east coast or in the UK, we have you in our hearts ;-)

Christmas 2009 inspiration

Each year I do a "Christmas Project" that I give to friends and family. I'm completely uninspired this year. Anyone have something great they've made? I have to be able to make it for 15 or so people and the cost is usually $5 to $10 a person (though some years I have a more expensive project so I give to fewer people). I've done velvet scarves, candles, curry mix, blacken seasoning, kleenex holders, spiced nut mixes, caramels, painted dinner napkins, bent rebar garden art, and a few more I can't think of (I wish I had step-by-step photos for all of these!). Thanks for the ideas.

DTV Don't be fooled!

Just an announcement. I believe that, as an instructables member, I have the duty to share this info. Some people may, and probably, already know this. CABLE/SATELLITE subscribers will NOT BE EFFECTED. There are a lot of news and ads going around scaring people that their TVs will go black on midnight Feb 17, 2009 if they do buy DTV tuners. I am just worry that a lot of people are gonna be cheated b/c they are not explicitly saying (or warning) that this will not effect cable/satellite subscribers, only those that use local public broadcasts (antennas). OK. Now spread the news! *If this announcement has help you please BUMP this topic (since others may still be fooled)

Maker Faire 2009: Piperoids

Roaming through the Bazaar Bizarre I found Piperoids, awesome little papercraft robots. And, like The Intarwebs, they're made from a series of tubes. According to the website, you don't need glue or tape for assembly - just scissors and your fingers. These little guys have quite a bit of character, too.

More steampunk fun: check out Doc Nagy's incredible steampunk keyboards and laptop casemod. Ridiculously detailed, gorgeous stuff. Even more on his site, Datamancer, subtitled Prestidigital Datamancery & Paraphrenalic Technofetishism. I like. We totally have to run a casemod contest...

Maker Faire 2009: Porkshanks

I met Instructables member Porkshanks (creator of the Ambience Enhancer) while wandering through the Steampunk Village. Lots of cool things - so much, in fact, that I completely failed to take a close-up of the Ambience Enhancer!Check out the rest of Molly's work here on deviantART.

Maker Faire 2009: TotusMel

We got to meet awesome needle-tatter TotusMel, hanging out in the shade with the rest of the Etsy Steam Team and other Steampunk Makers. Her tatting looks even more incredible up close. I'm torn between buying one of her masks and learning to make my own! (OK, maybe I should do both - it takes a long time to learn to make things that look so good.)Check out more of TotusMel's work at her Etsy store!

Harry Patch 1898 - 2009

Let's raise a glass of respect to Henry Patch, (and along with Henry Allingham, plus their cohort) , the last Tommy to fight in the First World War. He was born a Victorian ( that's the 1800's ) reached his majority as an Edwardian ( early 1900's ) and died an Elizabethan, (that's nowadays over here in Blighty). He outlived both his sons, and he still had an eye for the ladies in the twilight of his years.Above all maybe was the fact that he was a pacifist.

For Instructables, 2009 is a Green Year

Part of Instructables' mission is to inspire our community to create and share great projects. We do this though contests, theme months, and challenges that are seasonally appropriate, part of a bigger cultural trend, or simply areas where we want to see more great Instructables. This year we've decided that our overarching theme will be "Green."Our Green category focuses on the environment, reuse and recycling, and saving energy or making it in new ways. However, there's more to it. Green projects cut across all of our categories, and DIY is deeply and inherently green. When you make something yourself you often save materials, time, or money, while simultaneously generating less waste and creating a relationship with your project. Because of that relationship, you are more likely to cherish the final product, upgrade it, repair it, or even pass it along to someone else who will also cherish it. All of these actions involve making more with less, and that is fundamentally green. From my perspective as a life-long DIYer, I feel that it's time our culture took an active interest in all things green. I want to make sure the things we do are meaningful. We may have passed peak oil, but we can all work to ensure we pass "peak waste." So, to help inspire you, we'll be running a number of Instructables project contests all with a green theme. Some will be large, and some will be small -- we've even arranged sponsorship to give away Voltaic solar laptop bags and an Epilog laser cutter! To help you plan and get your projects started early and finished on time, we'll be publishing the timing of several of the contests scheduled during the first half of the year. Obviously, I think the best time to do a project is when you're most passionate about it, but I recognize everyone can benefit from a little extra motivation. Things are, of course, subject to change, but if you have even the slightest inkling of a green project, start now; especially since the real prize will be inspiring everyone that sees your work make their own lives a little bit greener.

Maker Faire 2009 (Bay Area)

Who all's going to Maker Faire in May?

Your favorite knex weapons of 2009.

Oblivitus isn't doing the list this year, Mr. Muggle is.  However, he screwed up and made us choose from a rather restrictive list of guns to choose from, which I think ruins the spirit of this vote.  So I decided to do my own poll. You can vote for ANY GUN* you wish for.  Yes, your vote will be counted regardless on the type of gun or rating.  The only restriction on the vote is that the guns have to be made in 2009.  (EXAMPLE): My 3 votes are: -ZKAR v2 -TR8 -Mepain's shotgun pistol thingy. (www.youtube.com/watch) You can not vote for your own guns.  If a gun you vote for is not posted on ibles or KI, but on a site like Youtube or The Knex Forum, you must provide a link to it. That is all. *made in 2009.  May not be your own gun. EDIT- Up for debate- Should each of the 3 versions of the TR series count as one gun, or as 3 seperate guns?  For example, If I vote for the TR8, but someone else votes for a TR36, should it be counted as 2 votes for the same gun, or 1 vote for a different gun each?
