Two ideas wondering what people think.... 1. Have the up/down bed for a 3d printer go up and down with water... Just have a little valve that lets water out and the printing bed would slowly lower. At whatever speed you wanted. Could work the other way and fill up. 2. Have the extruded plastic print into water... it would cool instantly and might help with resolution? Just an idea.

Hey guys, I have a couple of really cool puzzle designs that are printable. And I'm thinking of opening an online shop to sell just the designs. What price would be reasonable for a game/art design? And would you ever Buy a design? And if so, what price would you pay for a relatively simple design? What would you be willing to pay for an intricate design? I know thingiverse is awesome, and open source is the way to go. Though currently I'm a poor college student who's playing around with some 3d designs Trying to see if I can earn some extra money here and there. Thanks your help guys, -Tom

Instructables Team - I don't know when it was changed but the "View in 3D" upgrade works very well. I especially like the section analysis and exploded views.Makers - if you are like me and enjoy showing your work in CAD, please consider dropping STP/STEP files into your instructable.

Hi I am planning on 3D printing something and was wondering about some things: 1) What kind of programs can I use? 2) How hard would it be to create in the program/how much experience would I need? It's a pretty complex design and I have never touched 3D printing so this is unfamiliar territory. 3)What are some good sites that will print this design from ABS plastic for cheap? 4) How well would I have to know my math? 5) Is there anything else I need to know before I dive right in? With this knowledge in mind I'd like for you guys to see what I plan on making I really want this made and I would be the happiest man on earth if I could get it. Please help!

I need to find somewhere that has a 3D printer that someone can just go in and pay to use, but I have no idea where such a place could be. Do these shops even exist? Would I have to go around asking people if I can use their 3D printer? Is printing something from a 3D printer a long painstaking process? How do I even print stuff from a 3D printer?? Aaaah!

I am considering buying a 3d Printer, but I need something cheap and easy. I found a model that a like, it's the FDM 3D printer. The problem is, science I'm new to 3d printing, I have no idea what to look for. This particular printer has a low cost with a decent print size. Hello. I am a high school freshmen, and I am on a robotics team. We own a Dimension 3d printer, however I am not able to use it for personal projects. I am a CADer and would love to find parts or broken 3d printers to where I can build my own functioning 3D printer. Being 15 I do not have sufficient funds to where I can afford 3d printers. Any type of help would be amazing! If you have any information, please let me know. Thank you! -Evan

This is an idea that I had for the Make it real challenge. Though I didn't end up taking this path I would love to see it be completed. It goes as follows. >> Make a spherically shaped skull with all of the innards of an actual skull. >> 3d Print it using medial grade materials (Realism) >> Skull baseball :D

This 3D printer is a giant step up from other 3D printers. Where most 3D printers make items that you can hold in your hands, this machine by Enrico Dini in Italy is making items you can walk inside. It lays them up tiny layer by tiny layer and the result is pretty sturdy. One day it might even be used on site to make intricate buildings. Link via Make

3D printers are pretty awesome tools for prototyping objects. Now some people are also using hem to make shoes. People who like going clubbing with yellow skinpaint, apparently. Goofy shot aside, it's an interesting use since you can customize the shoe for your foot perfectly, but the look of something that's 3D printed will likely get old quickly. Link

I have some ideas for a project I want to build, but I'd let to sketch it out in 3D form and create a model. Are there programs that can do this? I'd prefer free ones, but I guess I can shell out a few bucks if needed. I basically just need somewhere to put my thoughts into a 3D design so I can view what I'm actually building.

Hi everyone, Hope you're all well? cartridgesave.co.uk recently held their first ever 3D Print Cup - A challenge issued to 3D artists to design an original 3D character, which they'd then print off (for free!) using a 3D Printer. The designers were all allowed to finish off their creations, and awards were given out at the wrap party, with the best overall design winning a Makerbot 2x Replicator. We had some amazing entries, from all over the UK and even the USA, South America and Europe. A gallery of the all the entrants has been uploaded at www.cartridgesave.co.uk/3dprintcup Hopefully there will be another 3D Print Cup next year, so keep your eyes peeled on the site.

HI everyone. I am wanting to start a 3d printing service business. This would be on a small scale to start. My question is how to securely download 3d files from customers so that I can use those files to create a 3d printed object for them, then ship objects back. I thought about offering the service on craigslist and receive the customer's file through email. But I know that a website would be better, but have no idea as how to implement the capability to receive customers' files securely and while keeping those files organized. Items will be printed using a makerbot, so I would communicate to potential customers as to the limitations of said printer. Thanks, and would appreciate any answers or advice.

Right after we hear about Ponoko, and their laser-cut designs that you can make and sell, here comes another company that offers the service of making 3D prints via its website Jujups.Their statement:We believe that "everyone has an inherent desire - to design" Design is about self expression. It is about satisfying your desires. Once upon a time only a small portion of humanity could read or write. We would like to say that once upon a time "only a few people could design but, JuJups changed that.JuJups is powered by design technology that structures design in an intelligent way, just as much as CSS and Html structures text and graphic data in an intelligent way so that non-techies can create wonderful blog graphics and web pages that we enjoy today. JuJups will do the same to the world of products.Basically, it's easy 3D printing with templates. They'll expand into more stuff later.A wider range of products will follow in the near future.JuJups is planning in association with ZCorp to expand 3D printing capacity to support the growing demand for customized objects. Customized giftware, memorabilia, toys, etc will soon be added to the list of items that can be custom designed. Many companies have now created opportunities for custom-made products, such as custom printed T-shirts, mugs, magnets etc. however, the customization is mostly in 2D.

I am trying to make a softbody animation in Blender 2.46, but there is no deflection button so it can git a floor. Is there any other way to make it so the objects react when they hit each other? On the tutorials I have seen there is a tab called softbody collision. Mine only has collision and the options bake and self collision. I don't know if they are using a different version or what. Can anyone help?

I would like to make a short video with some basic CGI in it. Basically I just want to overlay a moving 3D model (Possibly a flying creature) onto some prerecorded video. Can anyone recommend an easy program I can use to make a moving 3D model? I tried Blender but it is too complicated, so if you could recommend a simple editor that would be great.

I just stumbled upon this while looking through kickstarter. It's called the Buccaneer, it will retail for ~$350 and you can pre-order it in August. From what I've read it will ship late this year, or early next year. Check it out on their Kickstarter page or their website.

I myself don't own a 3D printer, but for those lucky fellows out there that do, I think sculptris could be a great tool for 3D printers. It's basically a virtual clay sculpting program. You can also paint your sculpture. Here is the link to download it. Happy printing! (just watch out for nargles)

Morning all from the shire or Oxford UK My names is Rory, happy to be a member of the site and always enjoy a good discussion Thought it would be helpful for myself and others to start a bit of a debate about 3D printers in general. I build my own 3D printer last year and was happy with it the 6x6x6 results were not the best but better than anything I had produced before, I regreted ever selling it TBH but now the time has come for me to think about getting another. Ideally looking to have a scanning unit too but it is wether to build or buy.......TOO MUCH CHOICE!! Since last year ive seen a massive jump in the tech used in this area and my main questions are: What do each of you use and why that specific printer? Whats your best results ( best object made ) which to people perfer shop brought (ready made) or home made (DIY KIT) If you could choose any 3D printer what would it be? Cheers all, Look forwards to seeing how this thread discusses this topic

I was thinking about 3d printing aluminum and was wondering if you could do something like this. You have a stainless steel air tight cylinder, surrounded with some refreactory, then nichrome wire, then insulating refreactory. The first layer of refractory is to prevent an electric short between the wire and the stainless steel cylinder. Stainless steel so it will take longer to oxidize. You would fill the cylinder with aluminum, close it, turn on the heater, t would heat up the stainelss steel and aluminum and melt the aluminum. Temperature could be regulated. Air would go to a hole in the top of it, the air would be regulated by a solenoid valve and a a pressure release valve. A needle with come out of the bottom, however it would be bent into a upside down U shape and one side would poke out the bottom, this would preven the aluminum from running out when there wasn't pressure. When the solenoid is open, aluminum comes out, when the solenoid is closed the release valve is opened to get rid of any excess pressure and stop the aluminum flow. This would be put in the place of the the traditional extruder, would this work?

Is it true that there are 3d printers that print in metal? If so what kind of 3D Printer is this and about how much do they cost? Oh also how exactly does that work when 3D Printing is supposed to be additive manufacturing and metal isnt a liquid or even flexible at solid states?

Hi, I've been looking around for a cheap 3D scanning system for fun and I was wondering if anyone has tried out PTAM or PTAMM for 3D scanning? Can these programs record point cloud datasets and pass that info to other computer applications (like the Blender point cloud skinner script) to convert the points into 3D models? This could be a way to make a 3D scanner for like $10 or $20 (or free if you already have a camera). Here are a couple links for the info: PTAM PTAMM http://ewokrampage.wordpress.com/projects-using-ptam/ Blender Script I was thinking to try it out in a week or two when I have some free time but it'd be fun to know if anyone has some experience with it! Thanks
