Finding 550-motor worm ?

Hey there, Recently I bought a bunch of 550-size (drill) motors from eBay, and I've really been itching lately to build some worm gearboxes out of them, the purpose of which would be a robotic arm or anything that requires huge amounts of torque. However, I haven't been able to find a site that supplies metal worms that fit on 1/8 inch shafts, at a reasonable price. Almost all sites I've seen supply only automotive-style parts, but of course  I don't need heat-treated steel. Or, for that matter, to lighten my wallet by $20 for a single worm. As for the worm itself, I don't have any other requirements other than that it needs to be metal (lots of strain on them) and have an inner-diameter of 1/8 inch. It doesn't have to have a set screw or fancy collar or anything- just a plain worm. I'd really like to find a store that sells these at a reasonable price, as I will need around 20 of them. Could someone help me out? Thanks

I'm looking for an affordable and complete 3d printer (or CNC) kit for under $550. Any suggestions?

I just want something small for my little projects, nothing fancy. I want a kit because it's cheaper, and I love putting things like that together. It just needs to come with every part necessary for it to run (electronics, mechanical, printer head, frame, etc)   I'd be fine with a two-axis CNC machine kit within that range too if it had its own spindle. I'm looking at this right now: http://printrbot.com/ Thanks.

My bicycle's mechanical disk brakes are failing! Answered

My rear disk brake is in a sad state.  I squeeze the rear brake lever as hard as I can, yet, my stopping power is nil.  I wiped down the rotor with rubbing alcohol, but to no avail. It might also be relevant that I ride frequently in snow and slush, and also in dusty areas. The bike is the Specialized ''Rockhopper," 2009 edition, with about 450-550 miles put on it. What can I do to fix  the brake so that I won't have to rely on the front brake?

Homemade Pressure Washer Answered

Hey guys, I had a lawnmower which broke at the blades, so I thought I'd turn it into a pressure washer. So  I welded up a frame from a old hand trolley and bolted on the engine. While I was looking around for a pump I realized that the engines made for pressure washers cannot be used for mowers. Is this the case the other way round?, Will a pump work on this engine? I'm 100% sure one will fit. Has anyone ever attempted/done this conversion? Thanks in advance!! WOOHOO!

I got a new knex set today. I got the double-sawblade ride. Now I get a whole **** load of blue rods, yellow rods, gray rods, and especially red rods (I only had 6 red rods before I got this set.)And I get much more yellow, white, blue, green, and gray connectors too. I think I may be able to build the sear rifle I have been hyping up in the chatroom for some time now. but This isnt really an end to my part limitations. I did not get a whole lot of short green rods, and the connectors only took one bag. Now my 550 tub is overflowing with the knex parts I have.Double sawblade is a good part booster.

Arduino LM386 Pre-Amp for Mic ?

I am trying to (pre) amplify the signal from an electret microphone using an LM386. The output goes into the Arduino analog input 5. I have tried multiple circuits, but none of them succeeded. Either the value settles at some constant or its 0/1023 and even when its in the 500- 550 range, the value doesn't seem to be changing with varying sound levels. I tried these circuits: http://wiring.org.co/learning/basics/microphone.html https://randomskk.net/projects/lightstrip/schematic.pdf http://www.josepino.com/circuits/mini_amplifier_lm386 http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/chip-amps/114698-preamp-using-lm386.html and a couple of more ones. I only have an LM386 on hand and cannot change it, as I need this to work out ASAP(in 2 days) for a science fair project. Hope you guys can help me on this. Kabir

CPU: Multiplier vs. Bus Speed? Answered

Hi. I have been overclocking my new cpu (AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE) and I was all excited about having an unlocked multiplier, because of the Black Edition, yet I can't even stably change it! I was told that you should up the CPU bus speed as much as you can while leaving the CPU stable, then move on to the multiplier. Yet after I get to the stable bus speed (235) I can't up the multiplier even one notch. It is currently 15.5. This was the stock multiplier. My question is, is it worth it to lower the bus speed so I can stably increase the multiplier. And is there a way to stably increase the multiplier even after you max out the bus speed that I am obviously not doing? Thanks in advance.

Shop made bench power supply.

Hello I have an atx dual sata 550 watt power supply... I have seen a bunch of instructables on here that allow just a few different voltage selections.. I have also seen a few with potentiometers to allow it to be more adjustable (dial up or down the voltage). That is what i want, i dont want to be limited to just three different options. S my question to you is, what type of potentiometer do i need to buy for this? And will a regular autostore purchased dashboard voltage meter window work? Also, what type of fuse/or breaker should i use?. Do i even need one? I also head i need some kind of "switch" for this as well. I found circut diagrams, i found list of items needed, but most of the instructables ihave found arent very specific on the specs of these extra items needed... Any help or direction would greatly help. Im going out to radio shack today and would love to grab the items needed to finish this priject. Thanks all...

What video card to buy? Answered

My old graphics cards died (two 8600 GT's in SLI), so now I need a replacement.  I've narrowed it down to either a GTX 260 or a Radeon 5000 series card, basically I can't decide whether Direct X 11 is worth it or not.  I've always been a fan of nVidia and I'd prefer to stick to their cards, but if I can get the same performance for the same amount of money with an ATI card w/ DX11 then I'd probably go with ATI.  My (original) price limit was $150, but since there isn't jack for that much, I've bumped it to $200.  I'd prefer not to go over that.  So how does the Radeon 5000 series compare to the GTX 200 series (within my price range)? Also, is DX11 worth it? My PC's specs: OCZ 550 Watt PSU (50 amps total on the 12v rails, 2 X 25A) Core 2 Duo E6850 Asus P5N-E SLI mobo 2 GiB DDR2 800 Mhz RAM 3 7200 RPM SATA drives The usual DVD drive A fairly crappy 16" CRT (1280x1024) Vielen Dank!

My computer locks up with an audio loop, help! Answered

I recently upgraded my hardware (I put in two 8600 GT's in SLI, and an E6850, both used), and shortly after, my games began to lock up. Whatever was on the screen would stay there, and the last second of audio would loop. The only way to get out of it was a hard reset. Then I noticed when I unplugged my other two hard drives, games wouldn't freeze up anymore. So I replaced my 400 watt PSU with a 550 watt, with 50 amps on the 12 volt rails. Everything seemed to clear up, until today, when I was browsing Newegg and listening to Audioslave (not very resource intensive), and it locked up with the same symptoms for no apparent reason. I'm getting worried now, as I shelled out 75 bucks for a decent PSU and the same stuff is happening. My CPU idles in the upper 30's to lower 40's, and peaks at 60 C in games. I know it's a bit toasty, but it shouldn't be hot enough to cause this sort of problem, right? So if anyone has any ideas about what's going on, any help is appreciated.

Animating Xmas Parade Float

Below are some pics of the Xmas parade float that a few of the other dads and I put together for last year's town Xmas parade. We are planning on keeping the same theme this year but wanted to upgrade a bit. Our goal is to automate the reindeer to give them some linear action that will give them the appearance of flying. When reviewing the pics, please note that the frame that the reindeer are attached to will be completely rebuilt. I was thinking of a frame with a double 2x3 side. Where one of the 2x's will have a channel routed out in it and the other one with the reindeers attached will then be able to slide back and forth by it.Another note is that Rudolph will not move. I have included some rough sketches of my initial thoughts using a motor and a cam. My problem is in finding the right motor for the job. I would need a high torque, low rpm (about 20) motor to do the job and I can't seem to find one. I have thought of using a mixing drill and a speed controller, but the mixing drill has an rpm from 0 - 550 and I am not sure the speed control will be able to slow it just 20 and even if it does, I am not sure there will be enough torque at that reduced rpm.I am certainly open to other suggestions. Thanks in advance for any thoughts or comment you may have.

Living in a box, living in an expensive box...

Four Europeans are in the final stages of selection to be locked into a series of sealed boxes for a year and a half. They are competing for two of the six places in Mars500 - a full-scale simulation of a short-stay Mars mission (a year and a half each way, a month on the surface - don't get me started on how wasteful that is...). The Mars500 facility, which is located on the IBMP site in Moscow, comprises four sealed modules. The total interior volume is about 550 cubic metres. There are no windows. The walls in the living quarters have been covered with a wooden panelling to make them feel slightly less austere. Looking after the participants' needs will be a mission control-room sited just outside the containers. But the experiment's designers are determined to make the training exercise as realistic as possible, so they will introduce a time delay in communications after two months. Because it can take about 20 minutes for a message to travel from Mars to Earth, it will take this amount of time in the simulation also. Message delay The crew and their ground controllers will send text messages to each other and then have to wait for the replies. It means there can be no real-time conversations with friends and family - and, in moments of crisis, it will mean the crew will have to make crucial decisions themselves. I think the biggest test will be the social side - how will six humans, no matter how well-selected, deal with having nobody but each other for years on end, and being in each others' faces twenty-four hours a day? Could we end up looking at the first murder in space? BBC Story ESA article Institute for Biomedical Problems

The FootHold Snare

One day, you might find yourself lost in the woods while camping! One day, the stock market will crash and are YOU ready to survive? Traps and Snares are one of the most important things while surviving. Blake Alma, the founder of The Art of the Outdoorsman once said, "A trap is as someone else hunting for you when you can't, it is truly your best hunting buddy!" This is so true. Unlike fishing poles and firearms, traps and snares work when you are sleeping! Hence, learning how to make a simple snare indeed helpful and lifesaving for it is an art of an outdoorsman! Let's get started on this foothold snare. You need: A shovel, 550 lb. test paracord, and bait. Note: There are laws regarding trapping. Step 1: Digging your Hole Picture of Digging your Hole I hope you got a good shovel and back! You will need to dig a hole 2 to 3 feet deep. Yes, I know it is a true pain, but it can save your life or get you free food! Diameter of your Hole: - Raccoon/Opossum/Mink/Groundhog/Large Rabbit (6 inches) - Coyote/Fox/Bobcat (8 inches) - Animals under 550 pounds/Deer/Small Elk/Very Small Bear/ect. (12 to 18 inches) Step 2: Camouflaging After digging your hole, add leaves, thin sticks, tree bark, or grass over the hole. Do not put to much "camouflage" over the hole or else you may prevent the animal from falling down in the hole. Step 3: The Snare Wrap the paracord around a stick or you finger making a small loop. Tie the small loop, and pull your finger out. Make sure the knot is very strong. Put the other end of the paracord through the small loop. You should then have a giant loop, known as the snare itself. Make the loop's (snare) diameter slightly smaller than your hole's diameter. Tie the snare extra line around a tree, sapling, or log near by. Make sure it holds. Place the snare itself over the hole, on top of the "camouflage". Step 4: The Path of the Least Resistance Sense the animal has plenty of ground to step on, it might be hard to get him in your hole. Hence you need to create a the path of the least resistance. You need to make him limited to where the animal will step. Make a path to your foothold snare using leaves, sticks, logs, and grass. Make it easy for the animal to walk through. Like us we want to walk on a nice smooth sidewalk, not on a beaten trail. They want to walk on a path with the least resistance, they don't want step on pointy sticks. They want to step were the feel most comfortable. That is way you need to make a path to your snare, so it will step into your snare! Step 5: Baiting your FootHold Snare Picture of Baiting your FootHold Snare Place your bait two to three feet ahead of your foothold snare. Raccoon and mink like fish. Opossum like processed meat like hot dogs. Groundhogs like sweet apples. Coyote and fox like meat. Deer like deer feed (duh!). How it works: The animal will smell the bait and take your path of the least resistance. While walking up to your bait on the path, he will step his foot in the hole. It will pull his foot out of the hole and continue walking. (When we pulls his foot out the snare comes out with him.) Then the snare tightens around his foot, making him trapped. Total Views Count - 15/09/2011

Here's this week's! Kiteman will be posting next week's total views group update. Just because. This forum topic is a printout of the results of a Perl script I run weekly. To be included in it, join this  group. The Perl script visits the profile page of each member of the group and extracts their Total Views then saves them to a file that can be opened by me in Excel. I then post the last 3 columns so everyone can compare their weekly gain with their friends. Total Views Count - 03/11/11

This forum topic is a printout of the results of a Perl script I try to run weekly. To be included in it, join this  group. The Perl script visits the profile page of each member of the group and extracts their Total Views then saves them to a file that can be opened by me in Excel. I then post the last 3 columns so everyone can compare their weekly gain with their friends. While you can easily see this data for you on the You page, this script allows people to compare their success/gain with their friends. I hand out patches as achievements when members of the group reach 50k, 100k, 250k, 500k and 1m views. Total Views Count -- 13/10/2011

While you can easily see this data for you on the You page, this script allows people to compare their success/gain with their friends. I hand out patches as achievements when members of the group reach 50k, 100k, 250k, 500k and 1m views. Sorry, I've not posted one of these in a while. Enough people left me comments and messages this week that I finally remembered to run the Perl script again! In fact, it's been just over two months! Sorry! ----- This forum topic is a printout of the results of a Perl script I run weekly. To be included in it, join this  group. The Perl script visits the profile page of each member of the group and extracts their Total Views then saves them to a file that can be opened by me in Excel. I then post the last 3 columns so everyone can compare their weekly gain with their friends. Connect a Sketch Answered

This is a People counter, well hope to be if working.ha. Lazer across a doorway hitting a LDR. The 4 digit 7 seg display counting up 1 each time a person breaks the beam.  As of now i  have a counting sketch from the Sparkfun example. It is counting up 0 to 999 and at the same time i have an LDR reading to the serial monitor and blinking the LED on pin 13. But they are not "interacting". I am trying to get the beam breakes from the LDR to advance the count by 1 every time it is broken. In the loop function is the mills that was advancing the counting. I have changed it to   displayNumber(counter).  Among other things. But i haven't been successful in having the LDR advance the count. The sketch is still missing some "stuff". What could i change to have the counter advance by 1 every time the lazer beam is broken?    Thanks W /* 6-13-2011 Spark Fun Electronics 2011 Nathan Seidle This code is public domain but you buy me a beer if you use this and we meet someday (Beerware license). 4 digit 7 segment display: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9483 Datasheet: http://www.sparkfun.com/datasheets/Components/LED/7-Segment/YSD-439AR6B-35.pdf This is an example of how to drive a 7 segment LED display from an ATmega without the use of current limiting resistors. This technique is very common but requires some knowledge of electronics - you do run the risk of dumping too much current through the segments and burning out parts of the display. If you use the stock code you should be ok, but be careful editing the brightness values. This code should work with all colors (red, blue, yellow, green) but the brightness will vary from one color to the next because the forward voltage drop of each color is different. This code was written and calibrated for the red color. This code will work with most Arduinos but you may want to re-route some of the pins. 7 segments 4 digits 1 colon = 12 pins required for full control */ #define ldrPin A2    // pin used for input (analog)    int digit1 = 11; heliostat and sun tracker basic program

In the late 1980s, I designed, built and programmed a computer-controlled heliostat. Its mirror reflected sunlight into my living-room, making it much brighter. It worked excellently with almost no attention for many years, until a neighbour's tree grew and blocked sunlight from reaching the mirror. The computer was a Commodore VIC 20, which was old even then, and had only 4.5 kilobytes of memory. The program I wrote, in Commodore BASIC, fitted into that space and handled all the control functions. It even included a few "bells and whistles". For example, at night-time the mirror was automatically parked face downward to reduce the buildup of dust. That particular program would work only on a VIC, and I haven't seen any of those for many years. However, I have recently taken the astronomical and trigonometrical parts of the program and made them into a new program which I'll append below. It calculates the position of the sun in the sky, as azimuth (true compass bearing) and angle of elevation, as seen from anywhere on the earth at any time on any date. It also calculates the required orientation of a mirror if it is to reflect sunlight in any desired direction. With the addition of some code to enable the computer to control motors, this could become the software for a computerized sun-tracker or heliostat. I'll append two versions of the program. The first is in QBasic, and contains quite a lot of explanatory comments. The second version is in a very generic BASIC, and has been tested on many implementations of the language. It even has line numbers! Personally, I prefer the QBasic version. The coding is more elegant. However, the generic version is likely to be useful to more people. It's public-domain. Use it for any purpose, even commercially. Enjoy! dow ' SunAlign.BAS (Version for QBasic and similar dialects) ' Calculates position of sun in sky, as azimuth (compass bearing ' measured clockwise from True North) and angle of elevation, as ' seen from any place on earth, on any date and any time.
