All Terrain Hex Limbed Extra Terrestrial Explorer

Here is some inspiration for those robotics hobbyists out there. It is the ATHLETE Robot designed by Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, California. The fast motion videos are my favorite. It has some nice moves, however they might be a little slow.http://www.popsci.com/military-aviation-space/article/2008-04/lunar-habitat-hauler( A portion of the article)The Winnebago isn't exactly a marvel of technology. But there is a good chance that NASA's next generation of lunar travelers will live and work out of a two-piece system mobile robot and habitat combination that will allow astronauts to bring base camp with them that has plenty in common with the humble RV.What you see on this page is the part that makes this home mobile: Athlete (All-Terrain Hex-Limbed Extra-Terrestrial Explorer), a six-limbed habitat-hauler being developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Made of aluminum, this prototype Athlete is eight feet wide and seven feet tall. It gets around using six independently controlled legs equipped with ultra-light wheels. In more-challenging terrain, the wheels can lock in place and function as feet, allowing Athlete to tiptoe through boulder-strewn fields or climb up steep hills. The mission-ready robot, which will be about twice the size of the prototype pictured here and made of steel, should be able to haul a load of up to 15 tons pretty much anywhere it wants to as long as it obeys a 3mph speed limit. That is about as fast as you can go without risking flipping over because of the low gravity, explains Brian Wilcox, the primary investigator on the Athlete project. Here is an informational video of the ATHLETE. Here is a video of the ATHLETE in action! ( Photo from http://www.pestaola.gr/img1/nasa-athlete-rover.jpg)

"Does rubbing alcohol affect plastic, how and what types?" Answered

I am hoping for someone to point me to research information. I am asking specifically about cleaning plastic water bottles and ice chests/coolers with rubbing alcohol. I was told that alcohol can deteriorate the plastic but I was hoping to know what types of plastic are affected by what types and concentrations of alcohol. Thanks

how far can an electromagnetic field reach?

For my project I need to know how far electromagnetic fields can reach. I am guessing its related to power and materials, but perhaps there is some kind of rough formula for calculating potential reach? By reach, I mean, how far can the magnetic field reach and attract (move) something, like metal fillings. Also, is there anyway to know how quickly a magnetic field can move something. In other words what speed will metal fillings move at when the electromagnet is switched on? Thanks all, Joel (the snow athlete)

Health

I would like to know how can I build a WHOLE BODY VIBRATION Board or platform. The unit is basically a small board where you stand and do exercise on it. The vibrator element looks like a compressor and has a variable vibration patterns for different therapies. normally are used by athletes to improve the effectiveness of their workout. They are also prescribed for elderly people that suffers osteoporosis (it has proven to improve the bone density just by standing on it).

Possibility of "gravity chamber" becoming a reality

I used to watch the show  "Dragon Ball Z" when I was younger, on some of the episodes there was a gravity chamber which would increase the gravity in the room. It would go up to 450G (1G= 1 times the Earth's gravity) I know this is completely impossible but could a device like this even exist and if it did would make it to 2G's? Before you respond I know this is just a show and not reality. If this did work this would help athletes train and astronauts (if and when the moon is colonized)

Need to build a device to measure verticals

What i need to do is possibly use lasers, i need about 30 of them around a half inch apart inside an aluminum pole or something. then i need a light connected to each one which will be at the bottom of the pole. After the beams are broken i need a sensor to light up to tell me the beam has been broken. this way an athlete jumps and once his fingers break the beam i know how high he has jumped without having to deal with the vanes in the current device. just push a button to reset it all. no messing with the pole or vanes or anything.

How can I create a "C-string" using a cup protector? (because it's underwear, maybe NSFW)

Hello, We would like to create our own "C-String". We already have a cup protector (athletes use this). Is there a way to make something so that the cup protector stays on despite gravity, or despite "size/volume changes"? (It's for a male). The person wearing this will be lying down. Thus, whatever we make the "String" out of (the part that loops around to the buttucks area) has to be comfortable. Perhaps there's a way to make use of the 3 breathing holes on the cup. ...

Posters offer good advice for creative minds

Inspirational posters typically show some natural wonder or athlete along with some inane puffery underneath it. You know the type. "TEAMWORK: Together we kick the losers down!" and other nonsense. So it's nice to see what art students do when they make posters to inspire the first-years. At University College Falmouth, each first-year gets a free poster designed by a graduate. Some are brilliant and some are just good for a brief giggle, but with dozens to look at something should grab you.Non-students can buy posters for five pounds each. poster listvia Core77

Fixing a 5 character seven segment display clock

This is a count up race clock that fell due to high winds and has stopped working. It is a springco athletics model 2710A. I have already tried respecting and reconnecting all the non soldered pieces of this display. The main chip on the board is a PIC16F887 with 20 pins. Each display is connected by a single ribbon cable with 20 pins and there are jumpers on each display labeled 1-6(presumably for the character placement in the display). If I cannot find a way to fix the current hardware I would like to replace the control board with an arduino that can do the same thing but I do not know how to wire the display to the arduino nor what model to use. Any suggestions are welcomed.

Hello everybody! This is knexsniper1 with a brand new forum for everyone to share their experiences! This time it's about athletics; cross country, track and field to be exact! In this forum, I would like everyone to share their experiences while competing, or just for fun; about the mentioned topics. you may share your fastest times in the 100 meter, farthest long jump, tallest high jump, but these are only some of the things that you can share. the choice is up to you! You can also use this forum for tips on competing, or you can share your ideas on how to compete better. Those of you who compete in these sports will have their name displayed here, and stats about them, such as their fastest times etc. Remember! I want this forum to be as "clean" and appropriate as possible, so don't be calling anyone a loser just because they can not run as fast as you, or jump as far as you, or anything! Just to start this forum off, I will be the first one to post my experiences on this! Any tips on DIY salt pills / electrolyte replacement?

I was trying to figure out how to make inexpensive electrolyte pills. From my calculations, one could make the daily recommended equivalent (assuming no other food has said nutrients): Table Salt - 1 tsp (primarily: NaCl, gives sodium) Salt Substitute - 2 tsp (primarily: KCl, gives potassium) Milk of Magnesia - 1 tbsp (primarily: Mg(OH)2, gives magnesium) Antacid Tablets - 5 pills (primarily: CaCO3, gives calcium) This could be useful to endurance athletes and people who are practicing prolonged water-only fasting. Has any of you tried to make something like this before? What other essential nutrients would you include? Any recommendations for a phosphorus source?

I want to do Parkour...what do I do? Answered

Hello, so I've seen Parkour, it's good, its cool, and it looks like a lot of fun, and, unfortunately, a bit dangerous. I want to get into it, but I'm not very athletic, I'm in martial arts so I have a bit of balance/agility/coordination, so at least I have something, but I'm not in shape.:( I've seen a bit of tutorials and I know I that even with practice, I'm not strong enough to do most of that, so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for some exercise I might be able to try to practice for this.  Any ideas? (PS: First post of anything on Instructables, except for comments, so yay!) (PPS: Any ideas for protection when I'm doing this?) (PPPS: Following most exercise Instructables found in the Exercise guide already)

Operation Immortality

Operation Immortality is a project to collect and archive the very best of what humanity is and has accomplished. On October 12, 2008, Richard Garriott, famed video game designer and the first second generation American astronaut, will take digitized DNA and human accomplishments with him to store in outer space when he journeys to the International Space Station. The archive will include information on humanity's greatest achievements, messages from people all over the world, and DNA samples from some of our brightest minds and most accomplished athletes. During the month of September, every human being is invited to come to the OperationImmortality.com website to submit their suggestions for our greatest achievements and leave a message for the cosmos. A lucky few may also be selected to add their DNA to the mix and join Richard Garriott as he rockets out of the atmosphere. With the LHC ready to do its thing, I think this organization has surfaced at the right time, save the earth, before we might all die.To def.LINK

Full Belly Project, The Olympics and Me

The Olympics are supposed to be the "green" Olympics this year.Since they are going to be held in Beijing they are going to have a fun time making it green. One way they are doing this is all the aircraft that will be flying the athletes will be powed by bio-fuel derived from the jatropha tree. The people in charge of the commercials and filming it wanted to make a way to inform the people watching about this.At Full Belly(who has their headquarters in Wilmington NC) they make various machines designed to shell nuts.Jock Brandis(head-honcho, inventor of the nut sheller) was contacted and asked to make an electric Jatropha sheller. This sheller is going to be shipped down to Miami and will shell Jatropha nuts at a Jatropha farm while being filmed and a commercial will be born.I am helping make this sheller at the headquarters! So my finger prints(and a little tiny bit of blood) will be in the Olympics! (not really, just in a commercial during the Olympics)So, if you do nothing at all with your life, make sure you at least watch the Olympics to see the commercial!

Increase running speed

I don't run very much. I never was all that good at it. Lately, though, I have found the need to improve that ability, specifically my endurance at speed. I can slowly jog a mile, sure, but haulin'-ass-away-from-an-amgry-man-with-a-knife-speeds don't last much longer than thirty yards, if that. I'd like to improve my overall speed if possible, and especially increase the distance that I can cover flat-out before I keel over. I'm not going to be running a marathon anytime soon, but I'd like to be able to get farther than average, as fast as possible, on demand. Any tips for training or proper form? I live at roughly 5400 feet, but I'm just a short drive away from 14,000-foot peaks. I would also like to improve my off-the-line times--in other words, acceleration. If I were to need to run between ten and twenty-five yards, I can do that at my top speed as is, but that speed is not as fast as it could be. I'm generally not even up to full speed until eight or ten yards past the line. Suggestions?

The Lost Ring ARG

We just sat in on our friend Jane McGonigal's SXSW talk on how life could be far more awesome and rewarding were it organized more like alternate reality games, and were lucky enough to get a peek into her new game, The Lost Ring. The concept is pretty neat: Ariadne woke up blindfolded in a corn maze outside of Johannesburg with no memory, Olympic-calibur athletic skills, and a tattoo bearing the words "trovu la ringon perditan" -- Esperanto for "find the lost ring." She sets out to find what is happening to her, and discovers others with similar stories. There's already a wiki, and the game will almost certainly spawn offshoot projects all over the net and physical world. Background info:The Lost Ring is a global alternate reality adventure created in partnership between McDonald's, AKQA and Jane McGonigal. Designed in collaboration with the IOC, The Lost Ring invites players from across the globe to join forces online and in the real world, as they investigate forgotten mysteries and urban legends of the ancient games. The Lost Ring recognizes McDonald's historic sponsorship of the Olympic Games, and brings the spirit of the Games to people around the world. It started a week ago and should run for around 6 months. Go check it out, and join up!

Need some suggestions with a School iPhone app

Now that I'm back at school, I've been assigned with the task of creating an official school iPhone app. I was told that it needed to be easy to use, and contain information that students would need, or like to see. Currently the school has an intranet, where you can access the Daily Notices (teachers can post stuff etc), email, 'Our Files' (web FTP interface for documents), school calendar. It used to have your class timetables and attendance records, but it no longer works because we switched to a new system and it'll take some time to connect the new database to the website. What I want to do is create an app which goes further than the intranet, and has features that students want. Because it's a long weekend, I can't do any sort of survey at school to find out what people want, so I'll ask you! If you were at a high school, what information would you want quickly? This is what I want to implement so far: Notices Canteen prices Exam timetables School Rules Calendar Notification system (i.e a popup saying something like 'Don't forget about Athletics Day tomorrow!') Photo Gallery Does anyone else have any ideas? I've included a screenshot of what the current intranet looks like, and what I want the app to look like.

Garlic as health booster

From Unlocking the Benefits of Garlic in the New York Times:The power to boost hydrogen sulfide production may help explain why a garlic-rich diet appears to protect against various cancers, including breast, prostate and colon cancer, say the study authors. Higher hydrogen sulfide might also protect the heart, according to other experts. Although garlic has not consistently been shown to lower cholesterol levels, researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine earlier this year found that injecting hydrogen sulfide into mice almost completely prevented the damage to heart muscle caused by a heart attack."People have known garlic was important and has health benefits for centuries," said Dr. David W. Kraus, associate professor of environmental science and biology at the University of Alabama. "Even the Greeks would feed garlic to their athletes before they competed in the Olympic games."Now, the downside. The concentration of garlic extract used in the latest study was equivalent to an adult eating about two medium-sized cloves per day. In such countries as Italy, Korea and China, where a garlic-rich diet seems to be protective against disease, per capita consumption is as high as eight to 12 cloves per day.I read this and immediately thought, "1-2 medium cloves per day! Christy and I probably eat that much in a single serving!"Try upping your garlic with these awesome recipes:Roasted TomatoesRoasted Eggplant with GarlicRoasted Sweet PotatoesGarlic Mashed Potatoesand here are some more recipes with lots of garlic.

Wakeboarding Tricks

I'm counting down the days until summer for one thing; wakeboarding. Its something I think I'd be good at, I don't like sports, but i'm sort of athletic. Last year i was just getting the hang of it by the end of the season. This year i'm stronger and bigger, and i'm optimistic that i'll be able to get a lot better this year. Plus my friends are going to learn with me on our boat.I'm positive that i can get the basic two wake jump down, riding switch, doing surface 180's and maybe a 360. Maybe some simple board grabs? No idea. But I wanted something I could practice on and perfect that's more than just that, some kind of aerial trick. Are there any wakeboarders out there that are willing to tell me what to start off learning once i have the basics down? Thanks, I cant say how excited i am for school to end...29 more days....hopefully by the end of summer i'll be acceptably good.as a side note, does anyone know the legal age in FL to drive a ski boat alone? I took my boaters safety test and i already have my learner's permit for driving a car.i know you have to be 14 with a boaters license to drive a PWC, but what about boats?I also know for people under 21 you have to have a boaters license and (i think) a picture ID. But i'm not sure, does anyone know for sure? Thanks

I HATE group work.

HATE HATE HATE!It is really the one thing I dread about school. More than anything. It makes me want to pull my hair out. It is a requirement in Kentucky schools that you have a group assignment in each class and it makes my life a living hell.I always end up doing all the work and I really don't like other people getting the same grade as me for doing nothing! For example - I am in a group with five other people right now, 3 of which are athletes. They can never do anything. They constantly say they're busy. They decided that we should do our outside work tomorrow, right before I have to go into work. And as if that's not stressful enough, none of them actually mentioned doing the work we need to do before we go out and do assessments. The pre-assessment work is very involved - we have to do six physical activity assessments on elementary school kids, with 3 criteria that should be met for each assessment, as well as making up data collection sheets for each assessment. We also need to get our assessments OK'd by the teacher before we go. So now I'm sitting here stressing out wishing that I could just do this project myself and ease the pain. I emailed the teacher and let him know what was going on, and none of my group mates have emailed me back yet.I think I'm going to go make grumpy faces in the other room and get off the computer. :P

Simple, yet annoying mistake made by game developers

I have found a simple yet annoying mistake that game developers seem to love to make. Before I go on, lets get this straight: Parkour is a method of movement focused on moving around obstacles with speed and efficiency. Originally developed in France, the main purpose of the discipline is to teach participants how to move through their environment by vaulting, rolling, running, climbing and jumping Free running or freerunning is a form of urban acrobatics in which participants, known as free runners, use the city and rural landscape to perform movements through its structures. It incorporates efficient movements from parkour, and adds aesthetic vaults and other acrobatics, such as tricking and street stunts, creating an athletic and aesthetically pleasing way of moving Okay, so the main difference is that free running is pretty much parkour, except it involves flipping, tricking, and is just all around more free; hence FREE running.  But here's the thing I made this forum topic about. In the  Assassin's Creed series, you climb up buildings, jump from one to another, and that's pretty much it. Scaling, jumping, rolling, and that's all there is to it. Yet they call it free running. You don't flip or trick or anything, therefore isn't it parkour and not free running? Another game where this mistake is made is in Tony Hawk's American Wasteland--but there's one difference. In THAW, you do front flips, back flips, wall flips, you climb buildings, scale buildings, etc. So it should be called free running, right? Well tell that to the guys over at  Neversoft, because they call it parkour. Why? What is it about these developers that make them blindly call something one thing, when it's actually another? Do they even think of looking at sources? Have YOU seen this mistake in OTHER video games? Tell me your opinions on this!

iRobot Create Submission: Automatic Field Chalker/Painter

Hello fellow Instructablites,As both an athlete and innovator, I am constantly looking for fun, easy, and creative ways to circumvent mundane tasks or activities. One specific task I've noticed many a time is chalking or spray painting line dimensions onto a playing field or court. For some sports, such as baseball and driveway basketball, the playing fields are chalked instead of painted. The lines are time and again washed away by a rain storm and it must be done over. With soccer fields, the painting must be done once a season, plus the second coat for playoffs. Basketball courts must be taped once a season as well. What compels me so much to create such a bot is the degree of simplicity that can be achieved for these tasks. There is so much complexity in laying out a correct set of lines and arcs. From circular three point arcs to proper dimensions of a volleyball court, there is plenty of room for human mistakes. A fully automatic Roomba would be able to both speed up and eliminate incorrect, and potentially gerrymandered, field lines. They will be pre-programmed on the bot and selected for what particular field it is designated to line.I am convinced that all of these types of tasks can be implemented into an "iRobot Create" to lessen the burden and hassle of the aforementioned activities. My brother Steve and I have developed this idea and fully believe it can be implemented well within out intellectual boundaries. After reading some of the comments we've received, we are now taking into consideration some new ideas. In-route Calibration. We aim to implement an accelerometer to keep the dead reckoning honest. Chalking repository. Instead of heaving all the chalk around in one huge battery draining load, we are considering using chalk/paint stations to refill the coating supply. Hopefully this will keep power usage at a minimum. Tank treads. These will probably enhance the fielder chalker/painter in every way, since it will be used outdoors.Thank you for taking the time to read our entry!Nick and Steve

"It's not like everyone who does DIY is a communist!" - Instructables in the Financial Times

I get attributed my favorite quote so far in DIY fanatics find a cyber showcase: "It's not like everyone who does DIY is a communist."Eric Wilhelm was studying for his PhD in mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000 when he decided that he needed an athletic pursuit. So he took up kite surfing, a sport that was then in its infancy.Because kite surfing was so new, there were no established manufacturers producing reliable equipment. So Mr Wilhelm decided to make his own. He began sewing kites from rip-stop nylon and crafting boards from plywood. "It's a perfect sport for an engineer," he says. "You can build all your own gear."Mr Wilhelm posted instructions and pictures of his craftsmanship on his personal web page. It soon gained a following, and readers e-mailed to ask where they could find documentation of similar projects. The website evolved into Instructables, a San Francisco-based portal, and Mr Wilhelm is its chief executive. The business employs 10 and registers 5m unique visitors a month. The site, Mr Wilhelm explains, serves as a sort of collective repository for creative types who want to show off their wares.More broadly, Instructables is a symbol of the latest evolution of a do-it-yourself culture of invention that has been the lifeblood of California's Silicon Valley high-technology industry. Apple, Google and Hewlett-Packard are just three global companies that began with a couple of creative tinkerers experimenting in a garage. ...But isn't there something incongruous in a profit-seeking marketplace for specialised goods that are supposed to be the antidote to big box shopping? Herein lies the paradox of the DIY tech ethos: much as it would like to escape the confines of the throwaway economy, it cannot exist too far outside consumer culture.Mr Wilhelm of Instructables does not see a conflict. The DIY movement, he says, "is not anti-capitalist...It's a backlash against mass market. It's not like everyone who does DIY is a communist."More news and press about Instructables here.

This regulatory action does not include agricultural uses of fertilizer-pesticide combination products (turf farms), or products that have a single active material with both fertilizer and pesticidal properties. 3.0 Background Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) regulates pesticides under the Pest Control Products Act including those intended for lawn and turf uses. All pesticide products that are registered for use and sale in Canada have undergone rigorous health and environmental risk assessments including the pesticides present in fertilizer-pesticide combinations. Pesticides are often combined with fertilizers and sold as fertilizer-pesticide combination products, which are regulated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency under the Fertilizers Act. When pesticides are combined with fertilizer such that the two components can only be applied at the same time and to the same area, the delivery mechanism for the pesticide component is brought into question. The very nature of combination products removes the flexibility of applying the pesticide as a spot application due to the need to accommodate the fertilizer, which is designed for broadcast application to the entire lawn surface at specified times of the year. Pesticides should only be used when and where there is a need. Broadcast applications of pesticides over the whole area are warranted only for severe pest infestations that are widespread. As pest infestations are typically patchy, spot applications of pesticides to those areas are most often sufficient to ensure adequate control in turf. To be effective, fertilizers and pesticides must each be applied at the appropriate timings, which typically do not coincide. Fertilizers are most often applied in spring or early summer, and/or in late summer or fall. A spring-applied lawn fertilizer results in increased tillering and rapid growth as temperatures increase, resulting in turf of increased density. A fall-applied lawn fertilizer also results in increased tillering and may result in increased winter hardiness. The majority of pesticides found in pesticide-fertilizer combination products are broadleaf herbicides belonging to the synthetic auxin group of chemicals. This group of chemicals only controls broadleaf weeds that have emerged and are actively growing in the lawn. These herbicides are not preventative in that they will only control weeds that have emerged and they do not prevent weeds from becoming established in the lawn. Further, this group of chemicals is not long lasting in that they do not persist in the soil to prevent future weed infestations. Combination products have been purchased for their convenience and ease of use as a two-in-one product to address separate lawn maintenance issues (for example, nutrient deficiency and various pest infestations) with a single application. However, these products are unsuitable as a delivery mechanism because they support broadcast application of the pesticide when this might not be warranted. Ultimately, fertilizer and pesticide applications should be based on need. Fertilizer should only be used if the turf will benefit from additional nutrients, and pesticide should only be used as a broadcast treatment if the pest densities are sufficiently high across the area to be treated. Targeted, well-timed liquid formulations of pesticides minimize pesticide use on the lawn and turf sites. 4.0 Regulatory decision Based on consultation with the provinces, experts and registrants, the PMRA has concluded that fertilizer-pesticide combination products for lawn and turf uses do not support the goals of best practices for pest management in turf. The PMRA, in conjunction with Canadian Food Inspection Agency, is taking action to uncouple the fertilizer-pesticide combination products intended for lawn and turf uses. A date of last sale of 31 December 2012 for fertilizer-pesticide combination products for lawn and turf uses has been set in order to allow for replacement products to be made available where needed. Should situations arise to warrant the use of a fertilizer-pesticide combination product for lawn and turf uses, the PMRA will assess combination products in terms of the timing of application and flexibility to apply as a spot treatment, as well as potential risks to human health and the environment. The PMRA decision to uncouple fertilizer-pesticide combination products is not based on the health or environmental risk assessments but rather the nature of combination products. Combination products remove the flexibility of applying spot applications of the pesticide due to the need to accommodate the fertilizer, which is designed for broadcast application to the entire lawn surface at specified times of the year. Turf fertilizers will continue to be available for broadcast application when needed. Pesticide-only products will also continue to be available for lawn care use to homeowners and commercial applicators for either spot treatments of localized weed patches or for use as broadcast applications to severely infested turf areas when warranted. Although more time consuming, pest control in lawn and turf can be achieved with careful pesticide spot applications that target only the pests that are present and separate broadcast applications of fertilizers. Now if only the US were to follow suit...

History of Printing Mesh

Sit in on a trade show seminar or visit an online forum, and you'll encounter countless debates about the "right" type of mesh to use. The truth is, while there are some guidelines to follow, the best way to determine what's right for your shop is by trial and error. Only problem is, who has the time to experiment? There are literally hundreds of mesh types out there. Trying to choose the best one can seem like an overwhelming task, but by following some general rules of thumb, you can narrow down your mesh choices to a dozen or so. Then testing each kind won't seem so unmanageable. Specs. It may look like the screen on your back door, but screen printing mesh isn't the same kind of material. The biggest difference is that unlike what keeps bugs out of your house, this type of mesh is made from fabric, not wire. For this industry, monofilament polyester is the most frequently used mesh material. When you start shopping for mesh, you'll also need to determine the weave, count, thread diameter and color that's best for your shop. The type of weave is a no-brainer. When researching mesh, you may come upon the terms plain-weave and twill mesh. The difference between the two is how the threads are woven to create the mesh pattern. Make sure you purchase plain-weave mesh instead of twill mesh, which can cause moiré problems, especially in the high mesh counts. Mesh is often referred to by its mesh count – i.e. 120 mesh, 230 mesh etc. – representing the number of threads per inch. The lower the count, the bigger the mesh openings. Low mesh counts are commonly used with specialty inks such as glitter and puff to allow big ink particles to reach the substrate. High mesh counts are mainly used to print fine details and halftones. Printing through high mesh counts also produces a thin layer of ink on the garment, creating a soft hand. Mesh with a count that falls somewhere in the middle is what most screen printers rely on for their basic, everyday print jobs. The last factor you'll need to decide on is thread diameter. Until a few years ago, terms such as S, T and HD were commonly used to refer to thread diameter. Now, however, a more universal method of referring to the diameter number (in microns) helps keep consistency throughout the industry. While there's no standard thread diameter for each mesh count, there's generally a heavy-duty and a light version for each mesh count. The thinner the thread, the better the detail, but the weaker the fabric. The mesh manufacturer or your local distributor will help you weigh the benefits of each and determine what's right for your individual shop. As you shop for mesh, you're sure to come across different colors. Mesh is typically offered in white and yellow, although orange is available from some manufacturers. During exposure, a white mesh will refract the light similar to the way in which a fiber optic cable works. The light travels down and out, affecting edge definition and quality. This isn't as important with lower mesh counts, but when you're doing a lot of fine detail and halftone work, such slight adjustments will show up in the final print. For this reason, many printers stick with white for lower mesh counts, but use yellow or orange for higher mesh counts. Assess Your Need. Everyone has a preferred type, but there are some general guidelines to go by when you're in the market for mesh. Look around your shop and you'll find clues to what type of mesh counts you should be printing with. The three factors to base your decision on are the type of garments you're printing on, your ink type and the kind of frame system that you use on a regular basis. You'll also need to take into account the type of print jobs you typically do. For most screen printers, T-shirts are the order of the day. They can probably get by using a middle-of-the-road mesh count such as a 110 mesh. However, if you print a lot of athletic numbers and use thick ink to withstand the rough treatment jerseys encounter on the field, you'll probably need a coarser mesh count to allow the thicker ink to reach the material. In such cases, it's not necessary to use a high mesh count. On the other hand, if you do a lot of halftone and fine detail work, you'll need a higher mesh count to retain the minute details in the design. Also let your distributor or manufacturer know what type of frame system you use, as some types require sturdier mesh (and higher thread diameters) to withstand repeated use. In general, most screen printers find that a 110 mesh count will work fine for most jobs. The key word here, though, is "most." Don't rely on 110 mesh for each and every single job. Instead, try out different mesh counts with different print jobs, and keep a record of your production results. Note the mesh type, screen tension, type of ink and whether the print job is multicolor, process color, etc. Also note the garment type: Are you printing on a nylon jacket or a cotton T-shirt? Regularly reviewing your records will help you see a pattern, and decide which mesh tends to work best with a particular ink and design combination. You'll be surprised by the varying results between your "everyday" mesh count and one that's a little higher or lower. If you want to experiment with different mesh counts, start with the coarsest mesh and work your way up to the higher numbers, noting how the print looks with each version. Hit the Trail. Most screen printers have an established local distributor that they order supplies from. Others may prefer to order directly from the manufacturer. To find a list of mesh distributors and manufacturers, check out IMPRESSIONS' 2003 Sourcebook. Decoding the Salesspeak. The world of mesh can get a little technical. Here are some key terms to help you navigate the terminology: Low-elongation (LE) mesh – Most monofilament polyester fabrics are low elongation. The term refers to the mesh's ability to retain its tension level. In the past, stretching screens required tensioning the mesh to say, 25 N/cm, letting it relax to a lower tension then repeating the process. Today's low elongation mesh typically only requires one go-around. Monofilament polyester mesh – Some printers who've been around for years still use multifilament polyester mesh. However, the majority of the industry has switched to monofilament. Although it must be abraded for good emulsion adhesion, monofilament mesh tends to stretch, hold tension and print better than multifilament mesh. Plain-weave mesh – Almost all mesh for the textile printing industry is plain weave. The term refers to the method by which the threads are arranged to create the mesh openings. Warp – The threads that run the length of a roll of mesh. Weft – The threads that run the width of a roll of mesh. The Numbers Game. Mesh is typically ordered by the roll, usually in yards. The price depends on the width of the roll (40", 50", 60" wide, etc.), the mesh count and the color. White mesh is not quite as expensive as yellow or orange mesh, because it doesn't go through the dying and rinse processes. Setup Surprises. Be careful how you open the packaging surrounding your new roll of mesh. Avoid using a knife if possible – mesh can be damaged just by being carelessly opened. Once you've opened your new mesh, store it someplace out of the traffic flow. Try hanging it on a wall like a paper towel roll. Getting it up and off the floor can prevent accidental damage. Keeping the roll visible also allows staff to monitor the supply. Don't wait until the last minute to order mesh – you may not be able to get a new supply in time for that next rush job. Care and Feeding. Once you stretch your screens, what can you do to keep the mesh in top shape? For one thing, be careful with your screens. While coarse mesh can withstand more wear and tear, high mesh counts can be easily damaged when moving them around the shop. To extend the life of your mesh, try stretching your screens so that the squeegee stroke runs parallel to the warp. After several print jobs, who can remember what the mesh count is on a particular screen? To help keep confusion to a minimum, consider writing the mesh count number directly on the screens or frame. Or, color code your stock: white for lower mesh counts, yellow for the more detailed work. So while there's no hard rule for what mesh counts to use, knowing what to look for can help you find what's right for your shop. – CW from Internet

The future of "mobile" energy...

Right now our current standard is still to use LI-Ion batteries when it comes to rechargable and power demanding devices. We all want more power for our phones, laptops or battery powered tools on the job.And we also want to be able to charge our batteries faster and faster.Back in the old days a D-Cell like lead acid battery in a flashlight was good for about 3 hours until it started to dim a bit. With up to 4 batteries inside they were not just heavy but also quite hazardous.Chargin was usually done over night and you just hoped they were not blowing up while charging.I spare you the other types that came after and that we still use as they all have their good and their bad sides. If we trust our marketing experts than quite soon we will only have electric cars on our roads and battery the size of a suitcase shall be able to run your car for hundreds of miles. The ideas of graphite based batteries or those using crystals and their forming reactions are all great and promising. Some will certainly make it to the consumer in a few years. The one thing that we are never told though is where all the energy to charge those batteries is supposed to come from.Replacing the combustion engine with electric motors is one thing but if no fossil fuel is used....Energy does not come out of thin air!Right now a lot of countries already struggle to provide a reliable power supply grid and distribution network. If you ever enjoyed a scorching hot day during a blackout caused by everyone using too much electricity you know what I mean...The population is growing as fast as the energy demand for our industries.Solar and wind are well and good but without proper storage solutions of not real use because no one can really predict how much they can produce. You know, weather and such things...If we trust our so called experts than all will come together really nice.By the time we have really powerful batteries we will have enough alternative energy supply chains up and running to keep them charged.I have a few issues with this entire concept, so let's see what other people have to about this:Imagine you have a nice and big cabin somewhere really remote and beautiful - but with no electricity for miles.Obvious solution for the modern hunter or nature lover is to invest into free energy.Free because that is how your solar, battery and inverter system would be advertised. You buy the stuff and after that all the electricity comes for free - the things pays for itself!Reality is a bit off though as you need to maintain and replace the costly batteries over time and such things. All this however totally changes for a residential home.Getting a huge solar system on your roof is no problem.Getting off the grid next to impossible. You see, once (or even before) you sign up for an electricity contract it is defined that your home is in a residential area. This brings certain limitations like the requirement to connect ot gas (if available), water, sewage and electricity.Only way to enjoy your "free" energy is by getting a good deal with your supplier. Some countries do it differently but around here it goes like this:Whatever you use still comes right off the grid. That is because your solar system really struggles to cope with load changes and providing surplus back to the grid. And since your meter is not capable ofworking properly with it either...To make it "fair" it is metered how much you use and how much you supply. Most companies here even do this on at least an hourly base - just to fair...For your bill the amounts are then adjusted. What you supplied is taken off.Sadly in most cases going negativ is not an option - if you provide more than what you use only your supplier is laughing. To make things worse what you supply is valued far lower than what you get from the grid.Often the difference is above 20%.Control....Around here quite a few people basically covered house, shed, carport and all with solar panels. This was while we had a great subsidy from the government to go solar...After now over three years most of these people still struggle to get anywhere near even for their investment.Without the grants the timeframe to break even was estimated to be around 12 years - which is about the time for when you need to replace the lot anyway and start over. Some do get nice savings on their bills though but families with kids not so much...If you have little to no chance to get your investment back before you have to replace it, then it is not really that much of a good deal after all.Imagine in town with hundreds of small houses everyone would be able to get the same money back for the electricity they provide...Pay 18 cents per kWh from the grid and get 18 cents perkWh for what you supply and once you provide more than you use you get money back. The providers won't allow this to happen as it means they not just loose some money but also they would lose control. How could they justify another price hike? How could they explain the blackouts? Why should tey pay you at all... ;)If a city with enough open and unused space would decide to go solar on a huge scale and while add also add a lot wind turbines....Someone would need the electricity provided and someone need to step in for those times where demand is above supply. Here the old triangle of power goes into full swing....You see a city or town would need also need a sub station to handle the electricity and to distribute it to the town houses, shops and so on.Funny thing is that only a "provider" can do such things.Doing it privat is usually only possible in really remote areas, like big mining outposts that just have no other option than using generators or solar/wind.And in most areas a town or city is no longer allowed to be a provider of electricty - at least not in the drirect form.Buying in bulk is no problem, having your own supply system however is not in the books.Right now most, if not all the big wind and solar farms are owned and operated by energy providers. There is billionaires everyhwere who could build a solar and wind farm the size of Texas if they really wanted but they won't do it either...Starts with the land, goes over the usage rights and won't end with activists claiming how bad it all is.Means it won't happen and if it does then the energy providers get together and claim they guy might have money but does not have the right to provide energy unless he actuall starts a corresponding company and plays by their unwritten rules. Can we still dream about it though? The dream is kept alive like the fire of hope that is only a tiny amber. If you sign up for electricity you are asked if you would like to pay bit extra so your electricity comes from alternative sources. Why is that bad, after all it is green? The initial investment might be huge for a wind farm but after that it is more or less just providing mone out of thin air.You can look the cost up for the new windfarm build near you.Same for the electricity prices in that area. And also the expected output of the entire farm.Do the math and calculate how quickly they break even....Once they do it only profit but you still pay the extra to go green.A bit like the new road that came with a toll....After 5 years the motorists paid it off but 10 years later they are still being charged while the road is disintegrating...Now add electric cars and our constantly rising consumption to the mix...We can't provide the electricity ourselfs as we don't get fully paid for it, we can go off grid either. The atom as the source of electricity is being phased out slowly as well. Finally as some might say, considering the thausands of years we have to deal with the produced waste and what aftereffects the storage might bring. Our providers will keep their grip on us for as long as they can.No government will stop them as in return they wouldn't have electricity.A cold war if you like.We never cared how much fuel our cars use until the OPEC decide to limit supplies and drive the prices up.And you can see the riches especially in Saudi Arabia. For most of the big OPEC players it really does not matter anymore whether or not they have oil or not. They make the same or even more money by other means and more modern means now. After this initial shellshock we woke up and decided that for the shopping trip of the wife a small car with just 4 cylinders will do.Overcrowded cities and roads also pushed us more into thinking small.Again it took force to go further, this time by governments slowy "going green".Emmissions, greenhouse gasses, polution, particles and corbon monoxide...Sounded all godd in the ads but it meant we could no longer afford our old car or even got banned from entering the town center with it.But a lot people still can't afford a modern car that meets the standards.Once they finally got the money and car the laws change again and they need yet again a newer car. This created a huge export and recyling market and profits for other people though. And what differenc did it all make in reality? While we were forced to improve and lose money countries like the US refused for years to even consider reducing the pollution.Countries like China and Russia even increased their pollution to impossible levels. We all remember how Bejing was literally shut down for the Olympics so the athletes have a chance to survive the games...We know how the pollution or global warming problem is misused to make money. The governments get huge payouts in the form of taxes from those cars that can't meet the specs. The dealer smiles with the increased sales of cars. And again the government smiles too as they get taxes from this as well.We know it happened before and is still happening with everything realted to fossil fuels, global warming and pollution, so why would electricity be any different?Reactors and coal fired power plants are phased out with basically nothing to replace them.Solar and wind will provide and till then we keep what we really need to keep....There is no plan for what comes after coal and the atom. There is no alternative.Batteries need electricity. And providers will always be the middleman controlling both the price and the availability. So how does this actually work you might wonder...No matter who invents or produces a new device to provide electricity - there is a very limited market for them.A farmer can't buy a full size wind generator and place it on his land...But an electricity provider can buy thausands of them....And if you go bigger than ask yourself who would need a 10 or 100MW fusion generator?Providing electricity is only a viable option if you go big and if you can sell the excess with a profit margin.Leaves only our electricity providers as customers. If you don't have to care about the buying price because it will be put down one way or the other onto your customers than it is like a credit.Only difference is that once it is paid off you start to get money back!Imagine that for your bank account ;)And if you know what you sell can have a very generous profit margin because your buyer does not care then the solar or wind farm will be quite costly to build..."We know we are not cheap, but who else can deliver you what you need?"And like our big supermarkets there will be an agreement on what the wind generator can cost.Ressources....Be it wind, be it solar or just the modern electric motor in your car - they all require stuff that is very limited on our planet.Take Neodyminum.Without it we have no wind generator or fancy motors as we wouldn't have powerful enough magnets.Vital elements and mineral required are only available in a few spots on our erth in quantities justifying mining them.I won't make this much longer than it already is, so please look up what is really needed to keep our future solow and wind projects alive. Then go and check where we can find thes things in good quantities.Once you did you might realise why the world tolerates the abuse of human rights, freedom or just self expression in other countries ;)If only China would stop today to export and sell their rare earths and prcious minerals basically our entire production worldwide would suffer quickly.Entire industries break down quickly and prices for certain things would literally explode. The US already started to re-open long abandoned mining projects as suddenly even the most costly operations become viable again.Think about this next time you fancy a world free of cars and truck using combustion engines ;)
