Homebuilt AC

Hello again everybody, bwpatton1 here with another one of his strange Ideas..... not as dangerous this time. Well, we built a gameroom, and currently it has a 10000 BTU window unit, in the South Texas summer it has a hard time keeping up, it also uses 900watts, well 900watts by itself isnt bad but we have two of these b/c we have two floors. I was wondering if i could build an AC to help supplement the run times of these AC's. My idea was to get an old refrigerator (and keep it outside) and run copper tubing through the freezer and into the refrigerator area and out of the refrigerator. Then, run this copper tube to a copper coil with a blower fan. Sound good sofar? Then I would run the end of the tubing back to the top of the freezer, somewhere in there there would be an inline pump somewhere............ OH and the lines would be filled with water/antifreeze??? Does anybody think this would be efficient enough to build? Or am I just wasting my/your time Diagram- the thing to the left is the refrigerator, and the squiggles are copper coils, and the thing to the right is a blower/coil. You were supposed to be able to read the writing on the diagram but the camera wouldnt cooperate

Can i bypass an AC/DC power supply to AC/AC?

Hi! I recently aquired an used guitar effect pedal, a Behringer X Vamp, to be more exact. It is 2nd hand so it came without the power supply. AC to DC Converter

Anyone know how to convert an AC to DC without using the Neutral Cable. Just a Single Live wire. Is there a way to split the incomeing Live wire to positive and negative phase and convert to DC from there? ANyone have any ideas?

Hello, It Is Now Summer where I live, and it is getting VERY hot. I Want to put in an Air Conditioner, but whenever I do, My electric bill goes through the roof! I have an old car part (Cannot remember what it is called, its the part that uses the turning engine to charge the battery or something like that... I Cant remember) and I would like to use that (made into a mini wind turbine) to charge my spare car battery, and use a DC to AC Power Converter to power the air conditioner... Converting Dc to Ac

Ok this is my first post on this site so forgive me if i sound stupid...i like to tinker with things so just to tell a little about things i have done...completely rebuilt a pc..wired up an adapter for an old xbox to work on pc...the easier things....fixing frayed speaker wire....rebuilt/and upgraded a zune 30gb to zune 60gb the usual most proud is overclocking my amd 64x2 4000+ to 2.9Ghz.....everyone said it couldnt be done...........anyways on to my question.......i want to know what all i will need to convert Dc to Ac power for a set of old desktop speakers i found in my closet.......i have an idea of what i want to be able to do.......put them in a backpack and make it portable.....currently i have two old 7.2v 1200mah Rc car batteries that i would like to use to power it.....and i also have a charger for can charge and discharge...its old but now my next step is what else am i going to need to complete this project...i dont know a whole lot about electricity but know enough to follow directions...if someone has already done this or knows how to and could walk me through what i need to do i would greatly appreciate it....

Inductive coupling with/and AC? Answered

Several things I wanted to know, but couldn't find; If 2 AC outputs are of the same amplitude, but of different frequency, will one necessarily be higher in power? In a conventional transformer, (not resonant) does a higher frequency allow for higher efficiency coupling? Does this change if the transformer is resonant? Is a 'standard' transformer more efficient than a resonant one at a very close range? (Provided that frequency, power, etc. are all the same?) And lastly, does the resonant frequency of a resonant inductive coupling circuit affect the frequency at which it couples? Converting AC to DC

I have a single phase 3.5 hp AC motor, I would like to convert to a 12 volt DC.I'm no electrical expert but I think it can be done.From watching youtube vids and asking Mr. GoogleI understand a DC motor runs slower say 1750 rpm,where my AC motor spins at 3,450 rpm.I also understand a DC motor has brushes.Besides the speed being different, and changing the cord out,is there any reason WHY this couldn't be done?Any potential drawbacks?Any help or knowledgeable advice would be much appreciated.Thanks guys,skip

Removing a vehicles AC? Answered

I am stripping down a 2004 ford explorer to put under my 1948 ford f-1.  I have the body ready to come off except for one problem.  The heater/AC.  Those hoses are the only thing keeping me from removing the body.  Is there any way to remove the freon and dispose of it because I know it is illegal to discharge it into the air.

Window AC in a RV....

Thank you to those who gave me the ideas for plywood on my ceiling and walls.  I am hopefully going to be starting that project in a few weeks.  Work has not allowed me to do anything before now.  My next dilemma is a window unit I have installed.  I have an older model rv and when I purchased it the main ac was inoperable.  I do not care to get it repaired.  I have installed a window ac, but,  can anyone tell me what is the proper way to insulate or proper insulation to use for the inside....Thank you, Thank you in advance :)

AC Voltage Attenuation?

Hello, All- I am making my second version of the "Tube Lamp." Others have managed to wire in these neat-looking old analog meters on theirs, and I thought that would be something I'd like to try. I bought a couple 1-10VAC meters from The problem is (besides the fact that I am an electronics idiot) that obviously if I try to wire in this particular meter to normal 110 AC, the meter will blow up. Is there a way to attenuate the voltage coming out of the dimmer to "play nice" with the 1-10 VAC meter? I suppose I would need to divide the voltage by a factor of 10. How would I step down the voltage to the meter only, while supplying the bulbs with the proper voltage? Any help would be appreciated!

Will a 240 Volt AC Motor Operate on 120 Volts AC

I need to know if a 240 volt ac squirrel cage fan motor can be safely run on 120 volts ac. An quick internet search reveals several sources that all say no, but I am concerned that the people answering the question don't know what they are talking about - as is often the case on the internet. I know there are a lot of want-to-be engineers out there ready to answer any question posed even when they have no experience or knowledge of the issue. Please do not guess at this or offer some unsubstantiated opinion.  I need a real answer to this question. Here is what I do know about this issue from researching a couple of electrical engineering sites. Lowering the motor input voltage by 50 % does several things. 1) The motor will run slower. 2) The torque developed will drop to about 25% of its full voltage rating.  3) This decrease in torque can make the motor stall when trying to start under a heavy load. 4) There may be drastic speed fluctuations due to load variations.  5) The motor current will double if the load remains constant. I can understand how these issues could cause severe problems in some applications, but perhaps not in the application I am looking at. I want to use a squirrel cage motor rated at 1/20 HP, 240 volts, 0.5 amp in a direct drive fan application. Here is how I am looking at this issue: - I need to reduce the fan speed so the speed reduction is a good thing in my application. - I have test run the motor on 120 volts for about an hour and there is plenty of torque to operate the fan. I figure at the lower speed there is less air load on the fan blades so less torque is required. Again a good thing for this application. The is no heavy load at start up and the motor seems to have plenty of starting torque for the fan. The fan does not reach full speed as fast as it does on 240 volts, but it still does so in about 4 to 5 seconds so this shouldn't be an issue either. Since it is a fan moving air and not some machine moving gears and levers the load is constant so the speed does not fluctuate at all. Again this should not be a problem. The possibility of the motor current increasing is my only concern so far and apparently it is not an issue since a test run showed the current decreased from 0.5 amps at 240 volts to 0.4 amps at 120 volts.That is a significant current drop instead of the predicted increase. Since this is a fan, I think the current decreases because the load decreases with the lower speed. For these reasons and based on my apparently successful test run I think the motor will operate fine on the decreased voltage. However, I am not sure how to factor the motor slip into this. Slip is the difference between the synchronous and asynchronous speed of an induction motor. From what I have read the slip will increase dramatically when the voltage is cut in half, but I am not sure what physical affect that will have on the motor. If you know what effect that will have or know of some other factor I am not catching please let me know.

Can anybody tell me how to convert dc to ac i actually want to convert 9volts dc to 9 - 7 volts ac cause i need to supply this ac voltage to a step-up transformer so that it will convert it into 200volts the real problem is when i provide 9volts dc to the step-up transformer it only gives out 41volts in output but when i gave it 9volts ac from another transformer it gives out 200volts ac and that's what i need but i need it to be battery powered so i need to convert the 9volts dc supply from the battery to 9 or less volts ac that's all i want to ask how to do it!

AC Adapter - wrong amperage?

My dvd player's ac adapter died, and while your forum on opening it up to fix it was great, it is not a simple short that can be soldered. This is a basic electronics 101 question. The old adapter put out 9v 2.2 a. I have an adapter that puts out 9v 3.0a that fits. Will I fry the dvd player by trying it out? or will it only take what it needs? Thanks for your advice. JB

A small AC power source? Answered

I want something to power LEDs from (I want to stop fussing about the polarity), preferably cheap and compact (I've no intention of buying a lab power source to play with it once in a fortnight, and I don't have the money). I thought about mobile phone chargers, laptop chargers and model railway power sources (I own one of these), but they are all DC. Can you think of something? PS Is it true that a motor connected to an AC source would stay still?

ac motor speed control

My uncle recently gave me a compact, functional ac motor with an axial blower attached to it. its a pretty cool thing, and i am planning on putting it in my mac's plexi case (when its built). i have no clue how to vary the speed. from what i found on wikipedia, an inductance motor cannot have speed control. how do i know if this motor is brushed or inductive?? and if its brushed, how do i vary its speed? help!!??

Ok, so I was under the impression that brushless motors were AC motors (and therefore conducted AC current), until recent internet searches proved me wrong. I am curious how AC current is conducted, is it conducted using brushless motors? Or is it a different type of motor that will generate such electricity?

Ok Yes I know that It has to be DC for it to work as a generator. But I found a fan from Dads greenhouse and its rather larged, used for air circulation. Is there any AC to DC fix? Any rewiring or turning the coil around? Any help or suggestions would be of great help.

El Wire AC inverter

El wire is cool and all but all the circuits that come with them are so half assed made it isn't funny. I have yet to get a circuit that is up to spec's that even closely adheres to any of the soldering tips and ticks, good soldering joints, anything. crap crap.  i have the components but the board is whack. how do you go about making a AC inverter for Elwire?

Mini AC-DC transformers?

Is there a device, such as a ready-made mini AC-DC transformer I can build directly into a project, so that I can connect it to AC mains... without a wall wart? I was thinking of taking apart a cellphone charger and just building it into my circuit, but it is not really the shape I'd like it to be... it's a lot larger than I would like. Flatter would be good...?

Need help with AC motor

What is a low cost way of vary a 2 pole ac motor? I know a vfd can handle the job, but I am looking for a way under $100. Also can someone help me out with some wiring. If I have a 120 VAC motor plugged into the wall, how would I reduce the voltage enough to run LEDs off the same supply wire? In other words, I only want to have 1 plug and run a motor and LEDs at the same time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rectifying ac increases voltage?

I have a transformer that outputs 16 volts ac.  I built a 4-diode full wave rectifier and added a 4700uF 35 volt smoothing capacitor.  Now my dc voltage measures 21 volts?  I thought the voltage would drop because it has to pass through diodes.  What explains this voltage increase?

DC to AC Inverting for boat

This spring I am looking to build a pontoon boat from scratch (Besides the pontoon logs). Its going to be a large boat and I am wanting a few amenities to go along with it. Im trying to figure away convert the car battery wich is on the boat to power appliances such as mini-fridge, lights, radio, box fan, and maybe a PS2 with Television. I need a high wattage out-put to power everything too. For sure: 8 lights - 75 Watts ea. 20 inch tall Mini-fridge - 200 watts Stereo - 150 watts Box Fan - 120 Watts Maybes: PS2 - 180 watts 20" Television - 300 watts I want this to work if all the for sures were going at once. I want to know how many car batteries I will need approx for 10 hours (or longer) of use with the "For Sures" And I want a clean way of doing this. Any advice would be much appreciated!

running LED strip on ac

So i started working on a new project with RGB LED strips and I needed a power source, I dug around my box full of wall warts and saw one that said 12v 3000mA and thought ''perfect!''. I never hit the wires with my multimeter, just used a spare chunk of led strip to figure out polarity.. Anyway, plugged a line into my strip and into my LM7805 and blew my voltage regulator, only then did I look at the power supply and notice it was 12v AC! So to my question (sorry for the long winded intro) How are my LEDs working with AC power?? I switched the leads and they turn on with either line attached, so its obviously alternating, but how could these turn on at all?

AC motor power supply

I have an old Dayton electric motor I pulled out of a lab blower. (I have no idea how old it is, I pulled it out of my grandpa's bottomless basement.) It looks like it still works, but I found it with no wires or anything attached to the terminals. (All of the internal connections look good, however.) So, here's the tricky bit, how do I run power to it? I copied everything off of the label on the motor, and I'll post it on the end. I've got very near to 0$ in the project bank, so the cheapest I can possibly do this the better. I don't need anything nearly as sophisticated as speed control, or anything like that. Enforcing polarity with an AC adapter?

Several months ago, I posted an I'ble for adding an AC adapter to something. The adapter I chose, from Radio Shack, is actually a two-piece "kit" -- the wall wart cord ends in a generic two-pin female jack, and they sell a bunch of different end plugs. The jack is symmetric, so that the end plug can be put on with either ground or hot on the outside.I've just realized that this could be a problem. If the electronic device expects red to be positive and black negative, then putting the jack on backwards would be equivalent to installing all the batteries the wrong-way about. Not a great feature.To "protect" the device, I'm considering adding a diode bridge to ensure that the internal "red wire" always carries the positive, and the "black wire" is always ground. Do more experienced folks consider this a good idea? Is it necessary? Would it be better, perhaps, to just epoxy the end plug so it can't be reversed?

AC Pump Motor Not Working? Answered

I have just come across a free pool pump and hope I will be able to get it up and running.  So far I have had absolutely no luck with it.  The run switch seems to work and so I don't think it is the culprit.  I have even tried two newish capacitors which I know work.  When I plug it in it just hums.  It doesn't throw the breaker so I don't think a short is the problem and it isn't bound up as I can turn it easily by hand.  There is also no sign of twitching as the motor attempts to start.  The overpower protection switch seems to be good and shows continuity across all polls.  The motor itself has continuity where I believe it is necessary so I am at a loss for what could be wrong.  The motor says it is good for 115 volts as well as higher but I would prefer not to shove higher voltages through it if not necessary.  Do any of you have ideas on how I could get this up and running as the pump is in excellent condition and will be useful as a runoff booster pump.

Ace ads and Firefox on Macs

As of right now, some of the Ace Hardware ads are misbehaving on Firefox browsers on Macs. They're showing up where they shouldn't and sometimes replacing the whole page. We're working with them to get this fixed ASAP but it is nighttime at Ace HQ so I don't expect a solution until the morning. In the meantime, things are fine in Safari, so if you need your Instructables fix NOW, I suggest using that. No problems are reported on Windows machines. If you are seeing misplaced Ace ads, please comment with your browser & OS versions!
