Ice Alaska Venue

The World Ice Art Championships are held in the Ice Park in Fairbanks, Alaska. In 2009 the venue may move to North Pole, Alaska. Each team is provided with a site on a looping trail through the park. The sites are surrounded by small black spruce are double as R.V. parking in the summer. In 1999 I rented chainsaws from the blue bus for the competition.

Ice Alaska: Ice

Ice for the competition is collected form gravel pits around Fairbanks. In the summer gravel is mined from old river channels. The resulting ponds contain little organic material. Additionally during nine month winter, temperatures range from +40 to -60F (+5 to -50C). These factors combine to create exceptionally thick clear ice. The following are pictures of an iced over gravel pit.

What would be the VERY BEST way for me to TRANSITION into my newly adopted off-grid, survivalist, subsistence lifestyle? Answered

A 16'x16'x16', 256-square foot, A-frame cabin on an elevated 3' concrete paver floating DekBlock foundation with a 3'x 6'8" front flush door, one rear 48"x 48"horizontal slider window, and another upper 24"x 24" horizontal slider window for the sleeping loft.I'm thinking that one of those standard U.S. Stove designs might provide just a little too much heat for my needs up in the Copper River Basin region of ALASKA's rural backcountry. Who knows? What are your suggestions for the above described "habitat"? Where can I find the best deals for my 256-square foot space? (Heating/ventilation-wise, we're speaking of subzero temperatures and heavy snowfall, so, I don't believe that "opening a window" is a practical solution for me if it gets too hot and smokey inside my A-frame.) Plus, I've done the HEATING ESTIMATE for the A-frame I'm going to build and the numbers come out to about a 620,000 btuh (heat loss) for the new dimensions I'm finally settling on: 16'x16'x16' or 256sq.ft. This calculation is for -50 degrees F with cold floor, ceiling, and glass surfaces taken into account. (Insulation isn't a factor this early in the design.) "Wow!" I thought at first. "A 620,000 btuh HEAT LOSS! I reckon you can never have too much stove even for an A-frame design." (Being that A-frame cabins retain heat so well, and that my sleeping loft may get really HOT in the Winter, this was a preliminary concern.) Foundation:(4) 8"- diameter cardboard cylindrical concrete forms for pin-point piers;(4) 84" reinforcement rods for pin-point concrete forms;(16) Bricks for base of footing;(24) Layout stakes;(8) 5' batter boards;(1) Spool of wire for joining the two 14" reinforcement rods for each footing base;(1) Spool of line for marking building layout lines;(?) Bags of cement;(?) Bags of gravel;(?) Bags of sand...*A few questions about the amount of concrete needed for the four footings and the four concrete piers: "How much concrete will be needed for four 8"-deep concrete footings poured into four 16"-diameter, 44"-deep holes with each containing four bricks and the four reinforcement rod supports? How much concrete will be needed to fill four 8"-diameter pin-point concrete pier forms to an estimated height of about 80"-inches? How many total bags of cement, gravel and sand (aggregate) will my foundation require? Most importantly, how much will it all cost?"A-Frame Structural Triangle (Theoretical Dimensions):Sides = 16'Base = 16'Angles opposite sides = 60 degreesAngle opposite base = 60 degreesArea = 110.85125168441 sq. ft.Perimeter = 48 ft.Framing:(2) 2"x 10"x 16' girders;(12) 2"x 6"x 12' rafters;(6) 2"x 6"x 8' joists;(4) 2"x 4"x 4' collar beams;(10) 4'x 4' plywood sheets for subflooring;(2) 16' framing braces for structural support against wind damage;(?) 3200-square feet of roof/wall sheathing material for exterior surface areas...*A few questions about the amount of roof/wall sheathing material needed to cover the 3200-square foot exterior surface area: "How much exterior sheathing will I need? How much will it cost? I understand that metal sheathing is preferred in the Copper River Basin region for its snow-shedding ability, so, given everything I've just said, what are my options for the A-frame I recently designed?"My total approach to this whole subsistence lifestyle (i.e. living off the land within a small, confined space) is probably all wrong. I understand that I might need to change my complete "mindset" and adopt a sort of NAUTICAL (or MARITIME) theme with my decor, furnishings and appliances.Since I'm really getting into boats anyway (my one chosen option for escaping the bitterly harsh winters of ALASKA's COPPER RIVER BASIN if all else fails), I feel that marine stoves, composting toilets, and an overall nautical aspect in the "finish work" might help me cope since sailboat cabins tend to be tiny, and I may need to transplant a lot of what I have to my seagoing vessel, "Vera Essie".www.geocities.com/wduncanbinns

Ice Art Alaska: San Francisco Art Institute Team

INTRODUCTION:In March 2008, a team of five graduate students from the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) are determined to participate in the World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska. Four sculptors will compete in the Multi-Block Classic event, which involves carving over 700 cubic feet of ice in under 132 hours. Additionally, we are bringing one archivist who will record and write about our experience. We seriously consider Ice Art as an opportunity to enhance our artistic knowledge and ingenuity, as well as to positively impact the communities involved.TEAM:Jesse Hensel, Team CaptainEric ReyesStephanie InagakiJesse WaltonLaura Rogers, ArchivistCONTEXTIce Art brings together communities from various countries -consistently from Canada, Norway, Russia, Japan, and China - and at all career levels including professional artists, students, and local residents. Each team has a different approach. Some will celebrate traditional craft while others will pursue edgy artistic expressions. Some will produce monumental forms while others will carve small-scale objects. For six long days, the SFAI team will work intensely together in the harsh Alaskan environment. During morning and evening meals they will reenergize and discuss different carving techniques and landscape traditions with other participants. This experience will undoubtedly benefit those in the competition in addition to educating and entertaining audiences worldwide. For general information about the competition visit: http://www.icealaska.com/COMMUNITY PARTNERS1. Suggestions for airplane window

I have an aircraft window off of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 720. Trying to decide what to do with it. Any suggestions? I already have three other windows (from 737s) that have been turned into picture frames. So I'm looking for some other ideas. Also, I would prefer to keep the item intact, since the research with Boeing leads me to believe there are no others of this interior.Thank you!

Circulating pump with thermostat

I have a 1550 gallon water holding tank and plumbing in an outshed in Fairbanks, Alaska. The pump and pressure tank are also in the outshed heated with an electric heater. To save energy I'm thinking to install a circulating pump inside the tank that circulates through the plumbing inside the outshed to keep it from freezing but not necessarily to the portion of water pipe going under ground to the crawlspace of the house. It should also have a thermostat to start heating when the temp of the water gets to 32 degrees or so. Is there any such thing and if so, how would it be installed? Thanks!

Clean up the pacific garbage dump.

Here is the worlds largest trash dump, in the middle of the pacific, it is twice the size of texas. (a little less than Alaska for people who don't know how big texas is) and it needs to be cleaned up. me and a friend have tried to find some way to do it but were just high school students in north virginia. We are going to need your help to clean it up, so please help through any means possible. Even something such as recycling, reusing, or just trying to get others to do something will help greatly thanks.

What can I re-build with a laptop screen besides a projector, (got one)?

I have a Toshiba satellite pro 6000 laptop that the video card and motherboard are having issues with.  Common problem with these units.  Anyway, I am pretty sure the screen works, and since we have enough old computers and laptops laying around that do work, I thought why not use the screen for something.  Can it be modded to display something?  The hard-drive and peripherals may be of use to someone, but I'm sure shipping would be problematic.  I live in Northern BC, 4 hours away from Alaska so.... yeah.  If someone really needs a part though message me here.

What car should I take on a trip around the world, and how should I fit it out? Answered

In a few years, me and two of my friends are planning to do a round-trip of the world, entirely by car and boat, we want to ship the car from Iceland to the UK, and drive from there to Japan, sounds strange, but it is possible, through some sort of witchcraft involving "Tickets" and "Ferries". The car itself can't be too expensive, but if we're talking about a car that must be expensive, all ideas are welcome :) Oh, and you can view a map of our route here: http://img638.imageshachttp//img638.imageshack.us/img638/109/themap2.pngk.us/img638/109/themap2.png We'll likely be skipping Alaska and taking South America instead, and we have yet to fathom how hard it is to drive in Greenland. (We'll learn by driving in Iceland.) Ideas about tents and so forth are welcome, and many thanks in advance :)

Sculpting From Scratch: Class at the San Francisco Art Institute

For over one million years hominids have made and embellished tools. We make everything from fake flowers to 2,000 ft towers. However, in a world of Ikea and fast food, it is easy to forget the potential of our own hands. Sculpting from scratch combines engineering and play to make freestanding objects that entice the senses and provoke thought. Class projects will focus on learning how to use shop tools, repurposing refuse, articulating objects, illustrating intent, and the question of beauty. No prerequisite.Jesse Hensel is a contemporary artist whose work is informed by the Yup'ik woodcarving tradition. His rugged natural sculptures use an Alaskan frontier perspective to critique contemporary society. Recent San Francisco exhibitions include such venues as the de Young Museum and Mark Wolfe Contemporary. How to chemically reproduce a product called crystal fx or DNA mutant crystals from just an MSDS? Answered

I have been trying to reproduce a chemical paint treatment made by Alsa Corp - Crystal FX.  All I have to go on is the MSDS.  A similar solution is produced by DNA Mutant Paints. Yes, I am trying to do this on the cheap, we are looking at spraying my entire Japanese mini truck in this solution come spring, so... why not make up the solution myself.  Ingredients from the MSDS - Water, Urea, Neocryl BT-175, Aqua Ammonia. Have been experimenting already with urea to some success and another product that is designed to reproduce crystal like ice patterns on your window glass for Christmas.  I found one can at a store that said that container had been sitting there for over 20 years, they don't even know where it came from.  No data solution on that.  Any thoughts, path forward ideas would be great, provided they don't exceed the price of just buying the solution pre-made - about $200.00 plus 150$ for shipping - I live in the middle of nowhere.... 4 hours south of Alaska.  The pictures are of the product applied, and the silly truck is my target, a 1991 right hand drive Mitsubishi Mini Truck

An Odd Walk

Me, my brother, my dad, and my uncle are going to Alaska in my uncle's RV. We stopped at an RV park today that has some trails nearby. They're really just dirt ATV tracks, and I'm not sure how far the RV park people meant for them to go, but I followed them quite a ways (a mile? two miles?) to a recently paved path four or five feet wide. It looked like something fairly major, so I followed it a couple miles. It had benches along it and must have taken a lot of effort to make, so I was surprised that I never saw anyone else on it. Eventually I saw something off behind a hill that looked like well (if that's what you call it) for a uranium mine. As I got closer I saw two sheds, a picnic table, some things that looked like small sandbags hanging from metal frames, something big and wood on the side of hill that vaguely made me think of a catapult without it's throwing arm, and some other stuff I didn't get close enough to describe because a hawk started to look very annoyed with me. I walked back to camp, wondering the whole time what in the world all that stuff was. I never actually saw either end of the paved trail, although I saw that it did continue past all the stuff. I also never saw anyone else on it. ??? What the heck is all that?

Giving away a 1 year Pro Instructables membership!

I'm giving away a one year Pro membership.  Why?  I won one in the Homemade Holidays contest.  I plan on continuing to support Instructables with payments every two years.  So I want to share the love.  Here's how to get a chance at winning.  Your account must have been created on or prior to January 18, 2010.  I don't want people creating fake accounts. You must not already have a Pro membership. You must have at least one Instructable published by midnight Pacific time on January 24, 2010.  It does not need to be new - it could be years old.  (It must meet the guidelines here - in other words, have original photos, decent writing, and reasonable organization.  If you want to know if yours will qualify, post a link to it in the comments below and I'll give you feedback.) Subscribe to me!  (Just click on the orange box over there ---> ) On Sunday, January 24th at 11PM Alaska time I will tally all my subscribers, eliminate pro members, and then do a random drawing.  I'll make sure that the other criteria (no duplicate entries, "worthy" Instructable, etc.) are met and will announce the winner here. Photo by my brother Kevin Dean. Sorry!  This "contest" is now CLOSED. The winner is... II.13 I used the random integer generator at Random.org to select a number based on my subscribers.  Thank you to my new subscribers. (I guess if you want to you can unsubscribe from me... but if I win another I'll probably do this again... and no matter what I do my subscribers will have a shot at it.)  For anyone interested, I added 63 new subscribers.  I benefited by interacting with some new people, checking out some different projects - some really undervalued ones too! And of course, thanks for the Instructables staff for letting me do this!

Two Hands Two Legs and lots of walking in SF

And we're off! The documentary tour of hacker spaces in America starts off in Boston with an early breakfast:At 3:30 on September 8 I began making the WOD's [waffles of departure] and gathered my friends. This was it, I was having my goodbye breakfast. We sat around a giant LED display that was playing tetris on autopilot like we were at a sports bar and called the AI engine out on it's bad plays. Choice is the name of the game in AI, how do you make the optimal choices with limited knowledge about the present and doubt about the future?I drank my cocoa considering the choices I've made to hit the skies and shoot a documentary on hackerspaces, and it filled me with exhilaration. What could be more critical than doing something that gives you the energy to do the thing you want to be doing? There has to be this ignition point to push the chooser into action, creating this snowball of awesome gathering steam as it goes downhill. Rather than chilling with Sysiphus on his uphill downhill journey. Feeling energized, feeling pumped, I called my friends around me and we ate to good health and poured generous libations of yogurt smoothie [Spilled the contents of the blender on the floor]. **************Later that very evening I found myself SSFed :: Suddenly in San Francisco:Walking down 17th street passing bodega after fruit market after bodega and suddenly we intersected. The assembly of the Two Hands Project was complete as we fortuitously intersected directly at the gates to NoiseBridge nouveau. An odd bunch from Chicago/Alaska, Michigan/Boston, and Florida/notsureyet we were meeting for the first time since the inception of the project, and we were ready to rock. Having almost no equipment after meeting up with Mitch and experiencing excellence and consensus in action we go to Sadies house (what a great lady), stay up late, and work all night. Starting the tradition that will continue to this day. Hopping on Paul's tiny folding bike I run across town gathering Mic's, video cameras and miracle fruit. Meeting up with the crew dazed and confused walking around town with tons of gear on their back we were glad to have a brief breakfast with SkyT, Mitch and FBZ before checking out the reMakeLounge. At the reMakeLounge we met up with Inna who saved our lives, 300 times. With her help we were able to talk with the folks at the Internet Archive where we met up with Mang. She drove us over to Oakland, back to SF, and finally back to the Airport. If there's one lady that made the SF leg of this trip possible it was Inna.Mang and his roommate Mike have an awesome Hacker Space appended to their home. We were given a rare peek into Radish Research which they opened up to us. It's been amazing how much people have opened up to us this trip! I'd like to take this moment to thank you all for your kindness, generosity and ability to withstand the rush that is The Two Hands Project. Hee!Posting would happen more frequently if it weren't for the emergency nature of this trip. But keep an eye out, I'll be posting shorter things more regularly I hope._Bilal GhalibAnd now, a brief video of the first leg of our trip:

BP Holdings , BP styrelsen godkänner Rosneft Deal l Current

Många soldat löner fördubblats i januari. BP Holdings

I need help for my electric imp/arduino project....

Hey, I have been working on a project centered around what chris nafis has already done with the grove dust sensor. So far, I have managed to get the dust sensor hooked up to an arduino and I have been getting it to display data, but that's about it. My next step was to get an elecrric im on sparkfun's imp shield to read serial data from the arduino in the form of numbers and then output it to COSM. However, for some reason, this does not seem to want to work on the leval of the imp. I followed most of jimb0's instructions on sparkfun for imps and arduino, but this does not seem to work. I have an arduino leonardo outputting serial data with serial1 at 19200 through pins 1 and 0 to the shield, which it then supposed to connect an imp running a program to patch this to a cosm node. I know nothing about squirrel, just using this code to do things: // Transmit data between UART and Input/OutputPorts on the impee // by: Jim Lindblom //     SparkFun Electronics // date: September 26, 2012 // license: BeerWare //          Please use, reuse, and modify this code as you need. //          We hope it saves you some time, or helps you learn something! //          If you find it handy, and we meet some day, you can buy me a beer or iced tea in return. local rxLEDToggle = 1;  // These variables keep track of rx/tx LED toggling status local txLEDToggle = 1; // impeeIn will override the InputPort class. // Whenever data is received to the impee, we'll jump into the set(c) function defined within class impeeIn extends InputPort {     name = "UART Out";     type = "number";         // This function takes whatever character was sent to the impee     // and sends it out over the UART5/7. We'll also toggle the txLed     function set(c)     {         hardware.uart57.write(c);         toggleRxLED();     } } local impeeInput = impeeIn();  // assign impeeIn class to the impeeInput local impeeOutput = OutputPort("UART In", "number");  // set impeeOutput as a string function initUart() {     hardware.configure(UART_57);    // Using UART on pins 5 and 7     hardware.uart57.configure(19200, 8, PARITY_NONE, 1, NO_CTSRTS); // 19200 baud worked well, no parity, 1 stop bit, 8 data bits } function initLEDs() {     // LEDs are on pins 8 and 9 on the imp Shield     // They're both active low, so writing the pin a 1 will turn the LED off     hardware.pin8.configure(DIGITAL_OUT_OD_PULLUP);     hardware.pin9.configure(DIGITAL_OUT_OD_PULLUP);     hardware.pin8.write(1);     hardware.pin9.write(1); } // This function turns an LED on/off quickly on pin 9. // It first turns the LED on, then calls itself again in 50ms to turn the LED off function toggleTxLED() {     txLEDToggle = txLEDToggle?0:1;    // toggle the txLEDtoggle variable     if (!txLEDToggle)     {         imp.wakeup(0.05, toggleTxLED.bindenv(this)); // if we're turning the LED on, set a timer to call this function again (to turn the LED off)     }     hardware.pin9.write(txLEDToggle);  // TX LED is on pin 8 (active-low) } // This function turns an LED on/off quickly on pin 8. // It first turns the LED on, then calls itself again in 50ms to turn the LED off function toggleRxLED() {     rxLEDToggle = rxLEDToggle?0:1;    // toggle the rxLEDtoggle variable     if (!rxLEDToggle)     {         imp.wakeup(0.05, toggleRxLED.bindenv(this)); // if we're turning the LED on, set a timer to call this function again (to turn the LED off)     }     hardware.pin8.write(rxLEDToggle);   // RX LED is on pin 8 (active-low) } // This is our UART polling function. We'll call it once at the beginning of the program, // then it calls itself every 10us. If there is data in the UART57 buffer, this will read // as much of it as it can, and send it out of the impee's outputPort. function pollUart() {     imp.wakeup(0.00001, pollUart.bindenv(this));    // schedule the next poll in 10us         local byte = hardware.uart57.read();    // read the UART buffer     // This will return -1 if there is no data to be read.     while (byte != -1)  // otherwise, we keep reading until there is no data to be read.     {         //  server.log(format("%c", byte)); // send the character out to the server log. Optional, great for debugging         impeeOutput.set(byte);  // send the valid character out the impee's outputPort         byte = hardware.uart57.read();  // read from the UART buffer again (not sure if it's a valid character yet)         toggleTxLED();  // Toggle the TX LED     } } // This is where our program actually starts! Previous stuff was all function and variable declaration. // This'll configure our impee. It's name is "UartCrossAir", and it has both an input and output to be connected: imp.configure("UartCrossAir", [impeeInput], [impeeOutput]); initUart(); // Initialize the UART, called just once initLEDs(); // Initialize the LEDs, called just once pollUart(); // start the UART polling, this function continues to call itself // From here, two main functions are at play: //      1. We'll be calling pollUart every 10us. If data is sent from the UART, we'll send out out of the impee. //      2. If data is sent into the impee, we'll jump into the set function in the InputPort. // // The end It's not mine, but I modified it slightly t work with numbers instead of strings. I an then using this arduino code on a leonardo: ;int pin = 10; unsigned long final; unsigned long duration; unsigned long starttime; unsigned long sampletime_ms = 30000; unsigned long lowpulseoccupancy = 0; float ratio = 0; float concentration = 0; void setup() {   Serial1.begin(19200);    while (!Serial) {     ;    }   pinMode(10,INPUT);   starttime = millis(); } void loop() {   duration = pulseIn(pin, LOW);   lowpulseoccupancy = lowpulseoccupancy+duration;   if ((millis()-starttime) > sampletime_ms)   {     ratio = lowpulseoccupancy/(sampletime_ms*10.0);  // Integer percentage 0=>100     concentration = 1.1*pow(ratio,3)-3.8*pow(ratio,2)+520*ratio+0.62; // using spec sheet curve     final = concentration*35     ;Serial.println(concentration);     lowpulseoccupancy = 0;     starttime = millis();   } };int pin = 10; unsigned long final; unsigned long duration; unsigned long starttime; unsigned long sampletime_ms = 30000; unsigned long lowpulseoccupancy = 0; float ratio = 0; float concentration = 0; void setup() {   Serial1.begin(19200);    while (!Serial) {     ;    }   pinMode(10,INPUT);   starttime = millis(); } void loop() {   duration = pulseIn(pin, LOW);   lowpulseoccupancy = lowpulseoccupancy+duration;   if ((millis()-starttime) > sampletime_ms)   {     ratio = lowpulseoccupancy/(sampletime_ms*10.0);  // Integer percentage 0=>100     concentration = 1.1*pow(ratio,3)-3.8*pow(ratio,2)+520*ratio+0.62; // using spec sheet curve     final = concentration*35     ;Serial.println(concentration);     lowpulseoccupancy = 0;     starttime = millis();   } } I would really like some help, as this is my science fair project and I am the only person that I know that knows about Imp, and sadly we don't have any hackerspaces around where I live in alaska.
