Hi everyone, i seen some pretty basic questions lol, so i guess mine will be ok :D Basically ive been having trouble with getting this thread to fully work for me www.instructables.com/id/Boot-from-USB-on-a-bios-that-doesnt-support-it/step3/Boot-from-the-disc/ i kno i shuld post it there ... but only one person replied there so i didnt think id get a response, anyhow my problem is i dont have a dvd burner and im trying to install windows 7. as you more likely figured out from the link name my motherboard doesnt support booting usb option from the bios. my computer is a Dell dimension 2350 (prolly a good 10 yr old model) everything still factory cept my 2 512 RAM cards. im using a 8 gig magic gate Pro duo stick in a targus multi-flash card loader (incase you needed details) so i followed the guide in the link to the end, my problem is after i select the USB mode like in step 3... it does a quick reboot u can say, it freezes at the screen with all dots.. im gonna re try and see if i found my error. but i was hopin maybe someone else knows where i messed up. thanks for lookin and your time :) PS: i have created a bootable memory card with windows 7 on it if that makes a difference also

Bio-Char Pellets

I didn't see a speel on this topic yet so now we have one. I wrote this to a forum for bio-pellet maker's and thought that I would pass it along to you to read. Enjoy. ______________________________________________________ Hello, I am new to the forum and to pellet making altogether really. I am an open researcher of the net at the present time have become interested in many topics I come across. The downfall of the net, for some, is that there so much information, it can boggle the mind. I ran across the videos put out by the web site on YouTube and decided to pose a question to the site administrator. They still have not gotten back to me, but I think from the posts on the forum you are a pretty busy group - he is likely looking into it. The newest thing on the 'Save the World' front is Bio-char. I asked if the pellet machine would be able to convert bio-char into a pellet form. I do know that the bio-char can be hand pressed, or screw extruded into briquettes. This is done in many countries around the world. What I think would work the best is the small pellets that your group are making. I will give a little bit of back ground for my idea. Researchers who have explored the rain forests of the Amazon have come across a soil type which is man-made. They call it 'Terra-Preta' or 'Dark Earth'. I have found out that the soil of the rain forest is not particularly suited to growing vegetation (this surprised me) and the ancient civilizations in the area would treat the soils. These plots of land they are finding today are estimated to be 100's of years old (in terms of last use) and are amazingly fertile as compared to other soils in the immediate area. They only run 4-5 feet in depth and cover the known growing plot area of the period. Today’s natives actually hunt out these plots and sell the fertile soil as an income. The keys to this fertile soil is a high carbon content and pottery chards. Both materials are very porous in nature. What happens is the nutrients that come to the treated soil gets trapped in the pores of the material and are held there, rather than being washed straight through the soil. These nutrients are then extracted from the material be the root systems of the plants as they grow. As the spaces in the material open up again they are refilled with newly arrived nutrients. This material has proven that it can remain in the soil for 100's of years - as is found in the 'Terra-Preta' plots. By the way these plots are not isolated to the Amazon they are found around the World in different areas. The thing is that the way they are made - the technique was lost. These plots around the World are being used up and the farmers are running out of nutrient rich natural (organic) soil. Some feel that the burning of the fields in the way to go as it has been done that way for ages. Well, the soil is dying and it working. The soils are being depleted. Plant matter which is made of carbon, takes its building blocks from the soil and therefore the soil is lacking carbon after centuries of use. But, because we had one lazy, or work saving generation, who knows how long ago, we have lost the technique of how to care for the soils. Tests run in Africa are showing an amazing 500+% increase in crop yields in the first year. They are still using un-organic fertilizers as that is what they thought they needed, but that can change now. Their soil is so bad in some areas that nothing would grow. If any farmer could get a 20% increase in annual yields they would be happy. The reason that the use of chemicals came into large use was because of the depleted soils. If the chemicals did not wash away (trapped in the carbon for future use) there would be less need in the future. Ideally there would be none needed in the future. So what are we doing? At present we grow plant material, burn it, and release the carbon into the atmosphere. I don't go for the global warming thing, but do feel it is not a good thing happening. The dirt on my car every day tells me that things are changing for the worse - I didn't see that as a child. What we can do is grow the plant material, burn a portion of it to covert another portion of the material back into carbon, and put that carbon back into the soil. This cuts emissions to the air (from that aspect of society) to 50% of what it was. Pellets can play a big part in this. My idea was to convert plant matter to char and the char to pellets. The pellets would be good as they are finding in test fields that the microbes in the soils like to grow in the larger pieces. 'It makes the soil happy' - they have a community of their own. You do not want too large of chunks as that makes the soil difficult to work with. Too small of piece (on surface soil) will be blown away on windy days. The windblown soil may not seem like a big thing, but the carbon has the nutrients now remember. Keep all you can on the fields instead of the forest. If you wish to recarbonize the forest soil, spread it through the forest in your spare time. It should be said here that the carbon upon introduction to the soil will deplete the soil of nutrients at first. This is the carbon 'charging' itself. The pores of the carbon are filling and will have the nutrients there; it just looks like the nutrients are gone. This is why it is a good idea to pre-charge the carbon before introduction to the soil. Mix it with compost or manure for a couple of weeks and let the pores fill. The nutrients will then be added to the soil with the carbon. This where the pottery chars they find in 'Terra-Preta' come from. They are the holding vessels from the indoor urinals and toilets - charged and stinky they were broken in the fields. This may not work as far as making pellets from bio-char goes. What about bio-char from pellets. This would be easy to test for you people. You have the machines and the wits to do it. The market is there if you want to sell the end material. Every back-yard composter, in every city will want this stuff. I hope I wasn't too long winded on this. It is an important topic, especially if you are a rural resident. City dwellers with a green thumb can help, but the rural residents hold a majority of the bio-matter. For more information Google 'bio-char' also 'making charcoal from wood' you can get into the worm castings and all that, but once the nutrients are in your soil the rest of the good things will come and live there without help.

Is this CMO chip compatible with this one for hot swapping?

For those who may it concern, thanks if you can help. So, I have recently found another CMO chip, one strangely on an old modem + audio card, and I want to use it use it on an motherboard I'm going to flash (fear of failure, so I'm going to hot swap with another one it if I can). I'm not an professional in chips, so I'd like to see if anyone can help me out here. Here is the two CMO chips (both are 32 pin PDIP):On the card: AM29F010-90PChttp://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheet/AdvancedMicroDevices/mXxzrq.pdfAnd on motherboard: SST29EE020http://www.ourchip.com/NZILIAO/chips/memory/29EE020.pdfThe motherboard using: GA-6BXChttp://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=1445The only slight difference I've had notice is that the card one had 1MB of memory and pin 30 is not used, while the other is 2MB of memory and does use pin 30. The BIOS awards, updated to the current beta version, and as well I think 1MB is enough room for the flashing (I hope).

Bios speaker randomly beeping? Answered

I finished building my computer a while ago, but initially removed the BIOS speaker as it kept beeping. Not a full alarm like if it were overheating, just a pathetic little "bip" every 10 minutes or so. The speaker is connected properly and it is the one that came with the board, and it makes a proper beep when I turn the computer on. I have disabled the CPU fan warning as I had it connected to my fan controller instead, and I also have thermal sensors on everything and everything runs nice and cool, so I honestly can't figure out what the problem is. I thought it may have been my dying hard drive, but I have replaced it now with a brand new hitachi 500gb sata-II drive that runs smoothly and I still get the problem (it just went off again whilst tying this). Any idea on what could be causing this problem and how to fix it (without removing the speaker). I have also tried it on Ubuntu and Windows, and I get the same problem, not that it should matter.

Dual-Channel RAM? Answered

I have a Gigabyte GA-H55M-USB3 Motherboard and an i5-760 CPU. I have been using 4x1GB DDR3-10600 modules, and then recently bought 2x4GB DDR3-10600 modules hoping to get 10GB, however, I can't seem to get it to work. All the modules are in working order and work individually. I currently just have a single 4GB module in. If I insert more, I either get a constant bios speaker tone indicating RAM error, or it will post successfully, but Windows will bluescreen. I have looked in the booklet and it is unclear as to how I should install the modules, but I thought I had to install them in matched pairs corresponding to the coloured slots on the motherboard. I have tried the 4GB modules in the white slots and the 1GB modules in the blue slots, but it won't post. Putting the two 4GB modules in a white and blue slot will post fine, but BSOD on startup. Any idea how I can get this configuration to work with my board? My CPU and board both support dual-channel DDR3 memory, so I can't see the problem here.

Can I upgrade this particular BIOS?

I have an HP Pavilion a6042n desktop computer. The current BIOS is Phoenix - AwardBIOS CMOS Setup Utility. The current version is V6.0 the BIOS revision is 5.03   03/02/2007. I have another HDD that I wanted to add in with the original one. The purpose was to set these two up as a RAID 0 but while searching through the setup utility, I could not find anywhere to change my sata mode. I also cannot find my bootable usb when I'm rooting through my boot sequence all I find are the HDD group, the cd/dvd group, the network group, and the floppy group. So either I am being very dense or I really need to upgrade my BIOS...

I updated the BIOS version on my Toshiba laptop but I'm not sure if it worked. Please help.

Hello I have a Toshiba laptop and I noticed that I had somethings that needed updating.  It suggested a BIOS update to 3.5 and one to 3.6.  I typed some command code in and said I had BIOS 1.9.  I have had a few problems with my computer lately and thought this may help.  I chose the update to 3.6 and attempted to follow the steps listed.  It performed the update and restarted.  My next steps said, "While the "Toshiba" LOGO is displayed, press the F2 function key to start BIOS Setup.  Check the version of BIOS and press the f9 function key then enter to load setup details.  Press the F10 function key then Enter to save settings and exit.  The computer will automatically reboot."  The problem is that when the Toshiba logo popped up it immediately disappeared (before I could press f2) and the blue windows screen started to come up.  I waited a few seconds but the Toshiba screen never came back up.  I waited a bit more and the computer was loading like normal.  I figured I needed to do the function keys like instructed but it was on the blue windows start screen not the Toshiba screen. I restarted my computer and at the Toshiba logo I pressed f2 really quickly. A black box with white writing (command box, script box?) popped up and then disappeared so I never got to press the f9 or f10 keys.  Everything appears to be funcitioning well.  The only difference is that my homepage changed from Google to Toshiba (which I set back to Google) and for some reason when I open the internet it automatically opens 2 Google tabs instead of one.  I googled to see if I messed anything up with the BIOS update but can't figure anything out.  I found info on how to check the version and when I typed in msinfo32 it said I had BIOS 3.6 since 2012! My first code that I typed was NOT msinfo 32 and that code said I had version 1.9 prior to me doing this.   I'm not sure if I already had version 3.6 and the different code gave the updated version OR if I updated it and it shows an older date (the update was done today 2.24.13 so I'm not sure why it shows the date of 2012)  Does anyone know about this?  Did I mess something up?  Is it ok that I didn't do the f2, f9, f10 steps correctly?  By the way, as you can probably tell, I'm not "that" computer savvy so please explain it to me in simple terms.  Also I didn't know this would be complex prior to starting.  I thought it would be a regular update like my anti virus software etc.  I read (after the fact) that I should only update this if I was sure I could complete it correctly, but I had no reason to think I wouldn't be able to correctly update it.  Thanks for reading and I appreciate any help/advice you can give. Updated to add:  I was able to fix the 2 tab problems, now only 1 IE tab opens when I open a webpage.

How I had a computer turn on automatically when the BIOS did not support It

So, I just got a Kindle and want to automate the downloading of news feeds to it. I wanted a PC to turn on when I woke up in the morning, download the feeds, transfer them to my Kindle, then shut off. First problem: The spare PC I put together for this does not support automatic startup in the BIOS, and neither do any of the other motherboards I had. So, I thought of a way to use an alarm clock to turn it on. When the alarm clock would go off, it had a speaker that would produce a tone. This means it was switching power to the speaker on and off very quickly. This would not drive a relay directly, so I made a "filtering" circuit consisting of a few transistors and a capacitor. When the clock goes off, it charges the capacitor with a transistor. This buffers the on's and off's into a kind of pulsating DC current into the cap. The capacitor drains into another transistor, turning it on. This activates two relays at once. One presses the button to turn off the alarm, and the other turns on the computer. Since the alarm was turned off just a moment ago, the speaker does not sound again and it does not turn the computer back off. In the first picture, you see two sets of black and white wires going into the PC. One comes from the relay to short the power switch momentarily, and the other goes to the +5VSB on the power supply. This line provides +5v at low currents, even when the computer is off. The 5v powers the buffering circuit. That was the difficult part and took about 4 hours. Everything else was easy. When you get a Kindle, Amazon gives you a free email address you can use to send files to it. I installed Calibre (an awesome free e-book manager) on the PC and had it run on startup. I set it up to download the feeds then email them to the Kindle through WiFi. Turning the computer back off was easy as well. All you need to do it make a shortcut to "shutdown.exe -f -s -t x" and add it to the startup folder. The .exe is the Windows shutdown program. -f force-closes any open programs, -s specifies a shutdown (instead of restart, logout, etc) and -t x is how much time it will wait before shutting down, in seconds. I set it to a half-hour. So, now I can have my news feeds on my Kindle before I leave for school. :D Funny thing is, the whole alarm clock bit could have been avoided if I wasn't too lazy to just press the power switch when I woke up in the morning! XD

Bio-mechanical electricity - 13W per knee.

A stroll around the park may soon be enough to charge the raft of batteries needed in today's power-hungry gadgets.US and Canadian scientists have built a novel device that effortlessly harvests energy from human movements. The adapted knee brace, outlined in the journal Science, can generate enough energy to power a mobile phone for 30 minutes from one minute of walking.A slow walk can generate an average of 5W of electricity, but they have models that will produce 13W - enough power for a one-minute stroll to provide half an hour of talk-time.The prototype makes you sound like an extra in Terminator, but the inventors are predicting saleable products within 18 months, probably powering (in the first instance) modern prosthetic limbs.Soldiers may also benefit from wearing the knee brace to power the multitude of devices they now carry ,such as night vision goggles and GPS."They treat batteries like they treat food and water - they are so essential to what they do," he said.Link to BBC articleLink to BBC VideoLink to Science Magazine articleThis whole idea seems like a "Good Thing" to me - even without the computer-control, I don't see why a pedestrian or jogger couldn't wear a pair of generators similar to those in wind-up torches, charging phone and PDA as you stroll around doing the shopping or jogging across the park. Get them with a Nike or Motorola logo, and we'd see hundreds of people wearing batman-style utility belts, stacked with all the gadgets the modern human "needs". It could really help wearable computing take off as well.

Disk boot error? Answered

Last night, I wanted some files off my laptop drive, so I stuck it in an external enclosure and plugged it into my desktop (whilst on). I then turned off the desktop without unplugging my laptop drive and turned it on again today, forgetting to unplug it. I have USB booting enabled, so it tried to boot from the laptop drive and as I was out of the room when it was booting, it entered the recovery partition as the hardware is incompatible. I have done this before, so I just turned off my computer, unplugged the drive, and restarted. Instead of booting from my primary internal drive, it got stuck on the post screen. It detected it, but wouldn't go any further. I then thought that it was still looking for the USB drive, so changed the boot order and removed usb boot, same problem. Removing my primary drive just returned the error "disk boot error, insert boot drive and press enter to continue", so I inserted the primary hard drive (I have it in a hot-swap bay, so it can easily be removed, although being my primary hard drive, not "hot"). After doing so, it kept returning a similar error. I then figured that it was still looking for my laptop drive as a primary boot device, so I cleared CMOS with the jumper and after setting it up again, disabling every other bootable interface except the sata port my primary drive is connected to, and it still just gets stuck on post. I have left it about 10 mins and still get the same problem. It is also hard to enter BIOS or any of the other utilities, as it waits until after post, so I have to either remove all drives or insert the laptop drive in it's enclosure. How can I get my desktop to boot from the primary hard drive again? Inserting the install disk is also hard, because I don't actually have a DVD drive yet, so I installed Windows 7 extended trial through a memory stick from my laptop with a disk drive. I have since deleted it off my memory stick, and my laptop is now in pieces hooked up to my monitor/keyboard/mouse instead of my desktop. It is on it's back and the hard drive bay is open in case I need it again. My BIOS is award with additional features on a Gigabyte GA-H55M-USB3 board. Both drives are Hitachi sata-II drives, one being 3.5" and one being 2.5".

Ok so i was wondering if any of you algae growers out there have ever tried fertilizing with chicken manure and if you have found the gross bugs/ parasites/ oil crap on top/gross things, and how you got around that i tried boiling the manure in water for ten minutes to kill the stuff but it didnt seem to work? ok so ive heard of the chemical way of making bio diesel but is there any way to make bio diesel or bio gasoline or bio ethonal without nasty chemicals from the oil straight from the algae press. Im 16 and my parents dont want me to have harsh chemicals nor do i have the money to go buy them. thanks

HP, Lenovo, ... Laptop Bios update boot loop fix

I had to install Windows on an older HP laptop today. And being the nice guy I also updated the Bios to the latest available. Now these Windows tools for this job are great fun, start it, press a few buttons and all is updated.Well, until you realise the thing ends in a constant bootloop going back to the bios update part created on the recovery/backup partition.Going the official way by asking the support is pretty much useless as my searches only came up with copy and paste answers but no solution. Some people got desperate enough to order a new bios chip, program it and solder it in :(But the fix is sooo easy and obvious that it might take a little kick to realise it ;)I assume you downloaded the right tool and bios update. For HP and Lenovo it all comes in one pack anyway.I also assume the tool stated that all went fine and the backup and update were done correctly. Now the boot loop that you experience is actually on purpose ;)You are required to enter the bios - for my HP it is the ESC key, then F10.Here you load the defaults, then adjust what you need - like the boot order.Once you set the boot order to the internal HDD or the OS boot manager you are good to again.I hope that will help the desperate people that got nowhere by trying the support for their laptop ;)

I need help with modding my original xbox, can you help?

I found an original xbox (1.0 motherboard) at a garage sale because i wanted to put linux on it. I softmodded it with the splinter cell exploit like on this. I now have the xbox at the modded xbox dashboard. I wanted to put in a new hard drive so it would have more space for linux and installing stuff. when I plugged in the hard drive it didn't boot up. I think I have to replace the BIOS with cromwell (using raincoat). I know you have to make 2 bridges on the motherboard to rewrite the BIOS and i have done that. Now I'm at a confusing part, do i have to use bSOd to flash the BIOS or is there something else i have to do? Thank you for the help.

I am downgrading my laptop, (Acer Extensa 4420), back to XP from Vista. Please help with detailed steps!

I am downgrading my laptop, (Acer Extensa 4420), from Vista to XP (Windows XP Essentials 2 Professional)I wanted to know what exactly I need to do. I have a back up of my drivers, both on CD and Flash drive just in case, and I have been reading this guide on how to do so.https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-UPGRADE-from-Vista-to-Windows-XP-on-an-Acer/But before I do anything, I want to know if I have everything in order, because this is my personal/school laptop and only means for internet. The main part I am worried about is looking in my device manager for what AHCI Disc controller I have. I'm worried that I will not have reconfigured the BIOS right on the XP installation and that I might mess up my computer entirely. Please help me with some good instructions on just what I should do! Thanks!

Hard drive wiping problems REFRASED

Hi, I posted another question on the same topic, but I don't think I got my point across. I'll lay down the basics - Is there any way to erase a hard drive WITHOUT having to boot from a cd (like dban or the windows xp install cd) and WITHOUT having to access the accounts. My computer is so corrupt, I can't do either. Don't tell me what I could check to make it work, just answer the question. No, I don't want to take the hard drive out and use another computer to erase it. I do know that I would need the XP disk to reinstall it, but I would need that if I weren't going to install Ubuntu instead. Yes, I tried booting from the ubuntu disk, it didn't work. Also, don't say "well, you're out of luck, take it into a repair shop." That's NOT answering the question. Thanks in advance.
