Bearings?

I'm looking at the VXB.com web site and can anyone tell me if the bearings are a fiber casting outside or a full metal bearing. Better yet does anyone have the part or kit number. I spoke with a sales rep and she asked if I needed a fiber outside or full metal bearing.

The Bears :-(.

Ok, this is a forum topic for Chicago Bears fans (and really, all sports fans). Who thinks that the Chicago Bears are the most depressing team to be a fan of? I just got done watching the Bears/Falcons game. That was depressing. They had their chance to come back... and they blew it! Oh well, there's always next week.

Difference between a 608zz and 608 bearing?

I have started the swap to go to this extruder on my 3D printer. As such, I am taking the time to go ahead and use new bearings. I have a set of eight that came from a [one week old] skateboard someone broke, but they are 608zz. The BOM of the extruder calls for 608. From what I can see, the only difference is that the 608zz have a plate that covers the ball bearings, versus 608 which appear to be open. Is this true? and if not, what is the difference? Can I use the two interchangeable? thanks in advance!

Got stuff, need ideas!

Hi everyone!  I work in industrial bearing distribution, and every now and then something falls into my lap that I get to play around with.  Today we got a bunch of bearings back that had been made slightly different than the customer had requested.  So, I've got a big box of these things.  There's nothing wrong with them, it's just that the little tapped holes are slightly misaligned and can't be used in the original application.  They are designed to press lightly onto a 5/16" shaft.  The tapped holes are 6-32 thread.  Also, I can easily get cheap 5/16 shafting and I've got a crate full of 5/16 single split and double split shaft collars. My question is, what would you do if had all of these little guys?  I couldn't bear to send them all to the steel recycling place, as they're perfectly good bearings and pretty neat to boot, but I'm not sure what to do with them.  I thought I'd throw it open to the group--any ideas?

Bearing/fulcrum for a pendulum

I want to swing a locket on a chain like a pendulum and I want to minmise the friction experienced where the chain attaches to the supporting post. What sort of bearing or similar device should I use for this? Ideally it should be available in a bronze/dirty brass colour but I guess I can deal with it if it isn't.

Low friction "bearings"

For several of my projects I required some sort of bearing that would not only allow for a minimised free play but also very low friction. Before you get too exited: This is not a new type of bearing or anthing for heavy duty loads, not even for ongoing use without servicing.I found that even slightly heavier things rotated on makishift bearing far easier if the axle was verticall instead of horizontally. This gave me the idea to try a simple needle-bearing approach. This is how it goes:1. Grind and polish your axle to get a nice needle point - it must be perfectly centered!I prefer to do this with the axle in a fast spinning drill on a fine grinder. The polishing in a simlilar way, but please do not try it with a cloth in your hand on a spinning axle!2. The other part of the bearing is a screw or pin with a punch mark.I grinded and polished a punch for this so it has an angle of 60° and polished it to a mirror finnish. If alignment is of importance then of course the pin/screw must work for this purpose! If in doubt make it spind an use a pencil to get the true center.A drop of sewing machine oil and it spins nice and with very little friction. The key is to adjust the gap(s) between axle and punch mark to next to nothing. You don't want any pressure along the axle as you would "drill" a hole into your mounts. And you don't want it too loose to avoid wobble.I hope it might give you an idea for your next project.

how to get a stuck bearing cup out?

I was taking apart my rear wheel, when I noticed the lack of bearing balls and appropriate parts. I wanted to remove the bearing so I can replace it with a new one, however when I was attempting to remove the last cup of the bearing, it is stuck in the hub. The local mechanic couldn't get it out and said I needed a whole new cassette and hub; I was hoping there was some nifty way I could remove it.

What to do with Ball Bearings?

For some while I've had a pile of ball bearings sitting here on my lounge room table, and without knowing what on earth to do with them, I now ask you. I have found uses such as adding to my "mousetrap racer," a small car, run by a mouse trap, that can go up to 15 metres. With ball bearings it goes twice as far as it used to, so I have become curious... what to do now though? All ideas would help, and an instructable would be even better. Cheers

I would like to make a Kydex sheath for it, but have not found a source that will let me buy a few or one sheet  at a good price. Still looking. Anyone know of a good source please let me know. what should I do with 20 1-inch diameter steel balls? Answered

How to order the correct ball bearings and threaded rod so that they will seat well and not be loose or have play?

I am trying to design, what will essentially be a very specific miter box / saw guide for a hand saw. Here is a product on the market that is almost exactly what I am trying to build. The only difference between what I need to build and this miter box, is that the miter box from that link cuts at a 90-degree angle to the workpiece being sawn, whereas I need to saw boards at angles much more acute than 90-degrees. There are commercially available adjustable miter-boxes, such as this one, that allow you to set whatever angle you need, and it will still guide the saw straight. However, they are made for cutting baseboards and molding, so the angle-range is only 90-degrees to ~40-degrees or so. I am cutting wooden boards for making, "scarf joints". So, I need to saw through 4" thick boards at an 11-17 degree angle. Where the above miter box saws perpendicular to the board it is sawing, the one that I am building, at 11-17 degrees, will be closer to cutting parallel. The housing, I think I can cobble together from angle aluminum and hardwood. However, I haven't bought ball bearings since I was a kid riding skateboards. I was hoping to take a threaded rod and push it through the hole in some bearings, then use some spacers and/or washers to space them apart, and secure the whole bearings/spacer/bearings sandwich with some washers and nuts. I do not live near a place that actually sells bearings much less carries bearing and threaded rod in the same store. Therefore, I cannot try it all out right there in the store. So I am going to have to order the bearings and the threaded rod off the internet. I need bearing where... Heavy load is not an issueHow fast they spin is also a non-issue.But that are...Shielded from the sawdust (do not have to watertight)Fit snuggly on a threaded rod and not rattle around. A loose guide-bearing isn't much of a guide, eh?Would one of you fine gentlemen help me by pointing to where I can buy 16-20 bearings, a threaded rod that will definitely fit them, and some .50 - .75" spacers (metal or nylon) that will also fit the bearings?

What's the most low tech way to make wooden bearing balls for a wooden ball bearing?

Last century I read an auto-biography by a back-to-nature man who needed to transmit power from a stream paddle wheel to his cabin by belts.  He said the hardest part was making a ball bearing.  He carved the balls out of oak with a knife and roasted them brown near a fire.  These lasted a long time.  How did he do that -- or how could he have done it using low tech?

Problem removing a glued on bearing from glass

I am a bit stuck and usually this does not happen too often :(Got a lazy Susan with two glass plates and the bearing sitting in two aluminium disks. The thing still works fine but the plates were never really centered properly.Starts to drive me nuts that it is always "wobbling"...My first attempt was to figure out if the glue might just be hot glue, so I gently heated it all up.Was a not go but didn't expect it to be that simple.Next try was to use some clay around the aluminum disk and then fill the dam with acetone to dissolve the glue.It did not even soften it a bit :(To make it complete I also tried it with Methye Ethyl Ketone as it never failed me but it seems the glue used is chemical resistant. In terms of echanic tried with a thin bladed tool but can't get it into the non existing gap between glass and aluminium. And even braided fishing line seems to fail as after about 20 minutes of trying to get in the glue I got nowhere. My last resort would now be to put it in the oven and slowly heat it up until the glue fails.Problem is that I highly doubt the Lazy Susan is meant to tolerate this and that it will crack. There is also the bearing and possible grease to consider as I have no clue yet whether or not I can take the disks apart to get to the bearing. Is there any good idea or tip that I missed that I can try before risking to heat it up?In case you wonder: The disk is about 5mm out of center...
