Why have a burning contest In the middle of winter? When solar pyrographists (I make up words) will be left out. I use the sun. And it's only feasible in the summer. Just doesn't seem right.

I found this article in class today, and thought it was pretty interesting. a scientist discovered that by exposing saltwater to radio waves, it weakens the bonds in the water, and the hydrogen can be burnt.http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/11/can-saltwater-be-burned-as-fuel/

Burning Man update:The Man caught (or was set) on fire early this morning during the lunar eclipse. The BRC fire crew extinguished the blaze, and they're rebuilding the structure and replacing the neon now. The fireworks and fuel hadn't been added yet, so the damage wasn't total.Story, photos, and more links from Scott Beale of Laughing Squid

Hello, I generated hydrogen simply by applying a DC current to 2 tubes filled with water , the ( - ) tube started bubling and filled up with a gas, i suppose that it should be hydrogen, i sucked the gas with a syringe and tried to burn this gas with a lighter by squeezing the syringe directly over the lighter's flame but the gas wouldn't burn, instead i heard micro pop's , like micro explosions.. Isn't hydrogen flamable ??

Everytime I burn a DVD (I use windows DVD Maker) It works on the computer, but only a few DVD players. I have an older one and a portable one that only some of the DVDs will wok on, otherwise I just get error messages. I also have a newer DVD player in which they all work on. Does anyone know whats going on? BTW- I'm using DVD-Rs. Thanks!

I know one of the easiest ways to rid the magnet wire of its enamel is by burning it with a butane-lighter. Does this release any toxic fumes, however? I work with magnet wire a lot, and am, quite frankly, tired of stripping it with an Xacto. I'd most likely be burning it outside, so it wouldn't be that bad, I suppose.

On Saturday morning my eyelids will be pulled back by retractors and held open, ethanol will be poured into my eyes, a flap of epithelial (outer layer of the eye) will be peeled back to reveal the cornea, then an Eximer laser will burn the surface of the cornea. Apparently, the burning smell can be quite unpleasant :-/ Has anyone else had laser eye surgery? Cheers, Pat. Pending

Questions for you scientific types. Would this work: I have a 3,000 gallon inground pool and no heater. If I took a barrel, stuck it in the shallow end just a half inch above being totally submerged, and lit a fire inside it it would it work to heat the water around it and eventually heat up the pool?

Not sure if this should be posted here, Outdoors or Square Pegs, but it's art related so I'll ask here. I once saw a how-to video, I am 90% sure is was on this site. but there is a chance it wasn't. I would like help finding it again. From what I remember, the person showing off had: a car battery, a long needle, plank of wood and some chemical. the process I remember was (but may not be 100% accurate): 1. (s)he painted on a layer of chemical (or acids) on the wood 2. stabbed the needle on the wood 3. connected the battery to the needle 4. turned the battery on. it then made some elegant, fancy patterns, like a bare tree, or a lightning bolt. lots of 'branches' and paths were burned into the wood (without manual intervention. it was 'natral'). like a chemical reaction. if anyone has the name of this technique, or a video/instructable/guide, I would really appreciate a link. Thank! EDIT: solution found: it's called "Fractal Woodburning" (go on youtube for some videos). I should have known, I love fractials! you need: saline wood needles and a high-voltage power source. and patience.

Cause ive seen the list keep changing (once a entry is posted on that subject) and im just wondering what are the limitations to entrys. - thanx Dj

So I'll be camping in a State Park where you must bring your own wood. Does anyone know the burn time of firewood? We're burning pine and this is something I've never had to consider, as I've normally camped where you can cut your own wood from dead/fell trees... As we have a rather intense upstream kayak journey to get to our campground, we're trying to take "just enough" but not too little :) Thanks :)

The new contest is finally up. I just want to know who's doing what 'Ible so as not to get too confused over everything. (and to avoid stealing *shifty eyes*) Yes I am aware there is an Instructible on it where discussion is already underway, but I think the forum should know about it too.Of course I've also used this to shamelessly promote my new (and the first) Burning Questions 4 'Ible: How to slim up for summer: The Atkins Diet!

I am planning to burn a bootloader onto an Arduino Uno using a Uno as an ISP. The instructions here: http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/ArduinoISP say to put a 10 mf capacitor between reset and ground. But they to not say which Uno to put the capacitor on. Am I correct that it should be on the Uno to be programmed and not the programmer?

Hello to all instructable community, I was trying to find a device that would detect when a bulb is burned and will switch to another lamp. The lamps I am using are 25Watts ac bulbs. I tried to Google a bit, probably didn't search the right keywords, but I couldn't find anything that does what I want. If you got any idea what i am talking about please reply. Thanks to all Omar

I have pale Irish skin that dont tan and trust me I tried everything to get even a little tan color. So simply you can say I burn and peel badly then pale white again. This year seems different, I was sitting in the shade and i got burnt and it was bad and very noticeable as you can see in the photo, but this time I hardly peeled. in some spots I did but very little which is not normal for me. It turned into a tan, so my question is how is that possible, is it a bad thing that a bad burn didnt peel hardly and juat tanned? Oh and to mention I have been taken this women skin, nails, hair vitamin plan at a place called gnc. Could that be helping me absorb the sun better?

Ok....I have 24 leds in parralel attached to a 9 volt battery - and a 10 ohm resistor - as reccommended by LEDCALC.comLEDCALC.com - but, when i connect the circuit and hold the resistor in my hand, it becomes INCREDIBLY hot. Each led is in parallel, individually. So...is it normal for it to be that hot, or did I do something wrong?

The other day a friend and i were disscusing the possibility of riging an old vw beetle engine to run on hydrogen and oxyen separated by electrolosis immediatly befor combustion. heres what weve come up with so far. 1: run a second alternator off of the engine and directly to the gas tank which would be full of water (this would also contain some sugar or some form of electorlite to aid in the conductivity) as you would be burning the H and using the O as you oxidizer it would not be nessesary to worry about which gas is which u would only need one line this line would run to a valve of some sort limiting the flow of the two gasses the carb would then be removed as u are putting O into ur engine so there is no longer any need for it. the line would then be run to the fuel intake where said amount of gas is released (determined by the valve) no here is where we run into what we think might be a problem would the pressure of compression return the gasses to their original state; water? if not then the engine should then run at this point with increased horse power as of the explosive properties of these gasses. (note this is in a nutshell nothing is ever this easy if it was everybody would be doing this) of course as any responsible scientist would do i will tes this on my dads lawnmower first. not really but i do have a test engine my next project is to see if i can get an old snow blower engine to run on black powder if anybody has any ideas on that as well let me know as it is tricky because an engine requires oil but black powder igites dry that is why im going with a 2 cycle so i can try ro run it dry for like 3 seconds and if it works try to figure out how to adapt it to one with oil an maybe eventually my car how cool would that be. it would be like driving a machine gun. not to mention the increased horse power and torque.

I could have sworn I saw an instructable on converting a regular laser pointer (low wattage type) into one that would burn (if only a little), i.e. increase it's power output, but now I am finding it impossible to locate. Has it been removed? Are there not proper tags to help me weed out the other half million laser projects? Have I lost my memory and there never was such a project? inquiring minds want to know...
