Cnc questions

Hi, I saw this post at instructables about building your own cnc machine at home and i pretty much got interested.I have just few questions though. Can i make a medium sized cnc machine using that method ? Are there any standard dimensions for the cnc machine  or i can use my own ? I am new to G code so where should i start to learn ?  Which material is best preffered for a medium sized(should fit on my desk) machine ? Sorry if these questions sound a bit odd to you but i have no knowledge about cnc. Thanks

Simple CNC

Does anyone have any information about the three programs, Simple CNC, Simple Art and Simple Engrave. I went to the website, and there is an order page, but the contacts and support buttons are dead.  There is no way to get in contact with them. Before I checked this I actually ordered Simple Engrave and was told I would receive an invitation to the CNC forum.  But I have not received the invitation and have no way to contact.  And of course, no program since it has to be downloaded from the forum. Should I just start a grievance with Paypal?

CNC Homing

Hello, I work on CNC Alamode project, raspberry pi and Alamode is configured to control 3 stepper motors: My configuration: Raspberry Pi Alamode (Arduino compatible), 3 stepper motors and 3 EasyDriver. Everything works, grbl is ok. Here is my story: I wanted to install a homing system, I first started with the x axis, as in the drawing, it worked well, it has stopped the motor, but I realized that the current 5v  passed directly on Limit X (D9), without 330 Ohm resistance. Then I put this resistor like a drawing but now the homing no longer works. My question is: Have I damaged my card, knowing that everything works? Can I redo my original configuration without resistance? My last statement :  4.96 Volts between limit x (D9) and Ground. Thank you for your help. http://www.exonet3i.com

cnc mill vs cnc router

Um two questions whats the difference between a cnc milling machine and cnc router is it that the mill moved the work and keep the tool stationary and the router moves the tool and keeps the work stationary and the next question is which do you think is better to build i want one for mainly small gears and pcbs to make a larger machine and some gearboxes?

Low Cost CNC? Answered

Does anybody know if there is a small, personal CNC in the range of under $1000? I do not feel I am ready to make my own, though I know there are plenty of 'ibles about them that I'm sure are good. Hello, I would like to use my 3 printer scanners I recently salvaged for a CNC. Would you expect the motors to be able to cut aluminum with a multi-speed dremel? If there is enough torque, it would be sufficient to make a 3d printer right?

CNC mill Q's?

Papa is looking into getting a CNC machine for his business and asked me about what to get. I looked into it for a little while but really I have no clue what is going to be needed. We receive imprints (negatives) of people's feet in a floral-foam like substance and normally clean it up a little and pour a mix of plaster into it to get a positive mold, which needs intensive course and fine sanding in a sink, (as well as adding things like metatarsal pads and other custom things depending on the order) and from that point the ordered material is vacuum formed over and the rest of the insert is made. Because of the shape of the feet and added features, it seems like we could cut out the use of the heavy plaster entirely if we use a 3D scanner to scan in the molds and then mill them out with a very basic 3 axis CNC out of cheaper/more light material for the rest of the processing. The question is, what equipment will be needed? I see some of the cheap 3D scanners are really nothing more than glorified webcams and fancy software, while (guessing the much better) laser scanners are pretty $$$. So how can we scan these imprints into the computer as a 3D file? And what are some good cheap CNC machines that can do the main 3 axises and enough to do 6 to 10 molds at a time?

CNC help - Software?

I'm planning on building a X-Y CNC machine.  The issue is softwares.  My plan was to get 2 scanners, and rip out the stepper motors.  Then, as seen on an instructables, use a parallel port with 2 or 3 ULN2003 chips to control the motors. My idea was to do as they did, and use TURBO-CNC to controll the parallel ports, unless there's something better to use? Can TURBO-CNC read G-Codes?  If so, what is the best program to use for creating G-Codes? This project is starting with a 1W blue laser as a etcher / paper cutter CNC.  It it going to be used for getting my machine tuned up.  Once things are in good order, It's going to be turned into a 60W acrylic / 1mm aluminum / thin wood cutter.

Simple CNC question... Answered

This is probably really obvious, but I wanted to know if there is a better way.  I was thinking about how I would go about making a simple "mounting plate".  Then I realized that wouldn't I first have to cut it to size and then mill out the holes.  But then the since I had to cut out the plate it kind of takes the point out of the cnc, because I wouldn't be very accurate for the outside dimensions.  So is there a way to machine the outside, even though it would be in the cnc's vice? Thanks in Advance! AI

So if there are any experienced personel please clarify this doubt for me, because this error wont matter so much according to my calculations. thank you for looking into the matter

the use of threaded rods for cnc miller and cnc 3d printers

I got some threaded rods today. They look straight. 16 threads per inch.  The tag on one of the shorter ones says 3/8" - 16x36", course threads, zinc plated 1700lb. I was planning to use these for the x,y,z control for a 3d miller/printer. I realize it may be slow. Someone mentioned that the McWire repstrap uses a 4 1/20 (the only part I understand is 20 threads per inch) was really slow, but someone made it work with 2 1/16. I did not really have plans to attempt position verification because I think the resistance vs torque should be minimal for a threaded rod setup. I figure I could get away with just sending it specific pulses for a specific amount of time. Could I have some feedback on this?

CNC Electronics - Grounding and probe

Hello!Reading about proper grounding of cnc electronics I saw that ground has to be isolated from power supplies negative. So, I have a copper plate with ground cables from 48v, 12v and 5v power supplies with ground cable from the wall. Everything works fine but the machine itself, has no ground cable because if I attach the negative of my probe cable I will be connecting negative to ground... This morning touching the machine structure and the door handle (the door is metalic) I felt a light discharge. Should I connect the maching to ground? Can this affect in any way the electronics with that negative to ground? ( the discharge was lightly, I can live with that lol)The router has no ground cable, maybe that was the reason for the discharge. Thanks!!

I have been asked to re create a spinning wheel and thought it would be cool to use there services for a part which would be very difficult for me to make otherwise.  Any help would be ace. :)

CNC Miller as a laser cutter

I have a theory that I would think should work, but opinions are good. If I was to get a powerful laser diode, like 300mw, and machine out a holding device for it to go into a CNC millers collet, then wired it up to a power supply, and put it in a CNC machine.... Would I have a half ass laser etcher? I would have to manually turn the laser on or off, and the feed would have to be really slow, but would I be at least able to engrave stuff?

How to avoid CNC crashes

Hey.I am wondering if it is possible to define particular areas on the bed of my CNC machine which I do not want the toolhead to pass over. My setup is an Arduino powered CNC pen plotter running GRBL. I am generating GCode in inkscape. I know I can set a safe height for the tool to pass over work safely but what if that height doesn't suffice. Can I define an area that the tool must not pass through? As a simple example:Before running a file the tool is at the origin. On sending the file the tool will take the most direct path to the first line to cut/draw. Imagine there is an obstacle that would cause a collision if the tool takes this direct path. Can I do something to ensure the tool navigates around that obstacle?I hope that makes some sort of sense :)Any ideas appreciated

3D Model Maker (CNC)

I don' t have the technical or computer skills to make this happen, but I'll bet someone out there does. I've heard of and read about these polymer 3d model makers and I understand that a few colleges have them. I know that one in my area does, as it was reported in the local newspaper. I also understand that they are quite expensive. I've seen the Instructables for some 2D routing tables, and even a couple for 3D work, using a hot glue gun or some other flexible material for building the model. Crude results, comparatively speaking, but impressive from the standpoint of the home hobbyist.  I've recently learned of a product called Solarez, which is a UV curing resin for fiberglass work. No limits on the working time of the resin, no gelling up in the middle of a job, it seems like a dream for complex fiberglass projects. Put it in the sun and three minutes later, it's fully cured. There are videos on YouTube for the fiberglassing aspect of things. They are not as exciting as the Instructables, but they are instructional. I plan to use Solarez in my future fiberglass projects, but I have a quart of very expensive epoxy resin to use up first. I figure if you fill an aquarium with Solarez and put a Z-axis table at the bottom, and a 2D UV laser on the top, you've got exactly the same thing for which others are paying thousands of dollars. I don't know how strong the Solarez would be in a stand-alone construction and I doubt that the manufacturer of Solarez intended it to be used in this manner, nor do I know how the stuff would react to a UV laser, and if it is practical from an elapsed time frame of reference. Again, I don't have the tech skills, nor even the need for such a device, but I think it's within the skill set of some of the more talented Instructable builders here. Just some random thoughts...
