CO2 hydrogenation (CO2 + hydrogen = methanol) how to ?

I am wondering if methanol production (as a byproduct of CO2 and hydrogen) would be possible as diy project  . I have been reading about CO2 hydrogenation that (as topic mentioned) would lead to methanol production. Methanol would be easier to store than hydrogen ,no needing special equipment (refrigerated containers ). Anyone familiar with this ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol One of the patents available: http://www.google.com/patents?id=mTI5AAAAEBAJ&pg;=PA7&dq;=co2+hydrogenation&hl;=en&ei;=J0PuTeT6KseD-wbZ_cX6Bw&sa;=X&oi;=book_result&ct;=result&resnum;=6&ved;=0CDIQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q;=co2%20hydrogenation&f;=false

CO2 valve question? Answered

Hi ... I would like to ask for your opinion about my idea : I got as a present a CO2 airsoft pistol. Unfortunately it's too powerful for the UK airsoft norms. So I would like to make it weaker. I took the magazine apart and I had a look at the valve. I find out, that the moving part in the valve (that release the CO2 from cartridge to the gun) is able to move cca 2mm. Now my question is : If I would limit the movement with "something" so that the moving part woudl move only 0.5-1mm ... would this make the gun weaker ??? Thank you for your opinion or any suggestions.

CO2 breathing animals?

Obviously from what we see today, evolution branched off into two sides, the co2 producers, and the co2 users.  Now all animals that walk or swim the earth today breath in oxygen and out co2.  It may sound crazy, but have we not even attempted to produce oxygen making creatures.  Evolution just didn't really branch off to this kind of creature and it would be very difficult to create.  Todays Autotrophs don't produce enough energy for a large animal.  Trees and small single cell organisms use tiny amounts of energy, but could a hybrid allotroph, which gets the majority of its energy from eating like a normal cow, but then it also uses co2 and sunlight maybe, and then you can eat it.   Just a crazy thought that has always bugged me.

Mystery of the CO2 Balloons!

Filled some balloons w  co2  from dry ice in a soda bottle.   As expected, they act like a lens, a magnifier of sound. No mystery there. Just as a dense glass refracts light, the denser gas refracts sound. The mystery is why balloons filled with co2  leak down faster than identical balloons filled by mouth. Yes, there is some co2 in my exhaled breath, but it is mostly  n2,  and  o2.  I would hav expected the n2 and o2 to leak out more quickly, being smaller molecules. So whatzup wit dat?

CO2 analyzer (sensor)

Dear friends My research topic is about designing a chemical reactor for CO2 capture. I have designed an experimental reactor and I need to measure the concentration of CO2 in the outlet of the reactor. Accordingly, I need a CO2 analyzer (CO2 sensor) that would be able to measure the concentration of CO2 and record it in the computer. I have searched google, but I have not found too many products that can be used in my research. Could you inform me if you know any CO2 analyzer or sensor that meets the following criteria: 1) I need to record the variations in CO2 concentration in short periods of time, for example every 20 sec. The analyzer should have a data acquisition system or can be connected to data logger to record the data in the computer. 2) I need to change the flow rates every time I begin the experiment. The range of flow rate will be between 1 to 5 Lit/min. The flow gas usually contains 25% of CO2. While I appreciate your kind attention, I look forward to hearing from you soon. Best regards Saeb

CO2 88 gram modification

Ok my fellow creators I am asking for your help. CO2 project is making  portable air tools without lugging around air compressor. Have pipe work and connections already done and modified the CO2 adapter to puncture canister when screwed in to release air. The problem I am having is once I attach an air tool it work fine, but after I release trigger air keeps flowing through because of to much pressure. If I read correctly its about 100 psi. Thought about direct connect from tool to air but I would like to be able to switch out tools. Have air tool change connectors at end right now. I do have high pressure shut off valve. Its just trying to regulate air flow with amount of pressure this thing releases. To be honest eventualy may be weaponized. Thanx in advance for your input.

CO2 canister discharge for arm mounted gun? Answered

I'm looking to modify a simple airsoft gun for the purposes of making the needed weapon props for a assassins creed costume a friend of mine is working on. With that said, the arm cannon/crossbow thing (sorry, I sadly never played the game!) is one I'm playing with now, and I got to thinking about taking a simple CO2 powered airsoft gun, and modding the barrel to take softer projectiles, and to be mounted to someones wrist. The question being: would the discharge from a CO2 cartridge harm someones hand? There will be leather between gun and wrist, by the way.

CO2 Cartridge discharge thrust?

I am trying to figure out how much thrust would be created with a full discharge of a typical small CO2 cartridge.  Way back when in High School we built CO2 powered drag racing cars in shop.  (I can't remember how we dischardged them?).  But I want to rig a similar device to discharge underwater.  I want it to give a "turbo boost" to a fairly heavy model boat after the boat gets moving a bit.   So it doesn't have to get the boat moving or up to a speed. It's more to give the boat a good push after it gets going. How much thrust would that generate? In water?  I could probably rig 2 cartridges to fire simultaneously on each side of the boat.

Beer, brewing, bottling, and CO2

This started as an unrelated comment thread on a post about freezing blueberries. It seems like such a great topic I created this forum for it. Brewers? Ideas? Beergnome: I do it for a living ;) we force carbonate as a rule. we only naturally carbonate for special order casks. our economy of scale doesn't allow otherwise.. fezrock it is possible to create a counter pressure rig for judging bottles for your homebrew, I'm sure there is an instructable for it,, if not there should be. it requires you creating an envelope of CO2 in the bottle, then having a T rig that will take the beer under pressure in the bottle with counter pressure of CO2 to keep the dissolved CO2 in the beer in solution. Its a bit of work, but if you care about competition at all. a clean bottle always bumps up the score. Fezrock: Nice career! I'm still quite the novice, but practice makes better! As to your question, I haven't seen anything like it. Topping the bottle out with CO2 would help the end product, but wouldn't do much for pressure loss. Nitrogen would be similar, but whichever is the heavier gas (not sure) would be marginally better for this lo-tech solution. On a small scale, if a sealed environment could be created to fit your capper around your cap, more gas pressure could be applied. I imagine an upright lever capper would be needed to work that out. Thanks for that idea seed! On a larger scale, if you could cap in a larger chamber, you could set the CO2/N2 pressure in the chamber to whatever you needed it to be. This would also give you space to insert your brew without introducing air. Or just overcarbonate the brew to make up for carbonation loss to outgassing. Crazy idea: add a small amount of dry ice without freezing the brew. (you don't need leftover yeasts anyway!) It sounds like a fun experiment, and could be adjusted to suit your pressure needs.

Use a Co2 regulator for air?

Can I use a Co2 regulator to regulate high pressure air.  I am trying to build a high pressure system using a scuba tank or paintball/airsoft tank to operate air tools, pressurize pipes, fill tires, inflate balloons, dust work areas and computers, etcetera.  There are C02 regulators but not many 'air' regulators.  I just want to use air and not Co2.

how to make a air powered short shot and stop air just passing by after the munition left the barrel?

Hey,i've got a question,i want to make a air pressured gun, but i wont make one that just lets you build up much pressure, and then in one single shot get's empty. i want to make it like a paintball gun, so you can shoot more than one time with the same pressure tank. i found this : http://www.howstuffworks.com/paintball-3d-gun.htm that must axplain a bit how a paintball gun works. but i still don't get it. and i also found this: https://www.instructables.com/id/Airgun-with-eXplosive-air-Release-Valve/, so want to maybe combine those ideas, like make something in front of the nut of the explosive air-realese valve. that does the same thing as the paintball gun. something that knocks the valve back one time and then reloads itself. i don't have a clue how to do something like that, that's why i ask it.thanks for your time!

what would it take to make a co2 laser from scratch?

I think I have the basic concept, you take a full mirror and a one sided mirror, put them between a tube, pump in 10% co2 gas 5% argon or something inert, charge it with a neon transformer and a few welder's sticks for the anode and cathode respectively, then most of what comes out the one sided mirror should be laser emissions. I know I'm missing something though... any suggestions? I'm not worried about refining the beam into something that could: cut metal, make holes, be a nuisance to my neighbors, I just want a multi-watt laser in my barn that I could use to start my wood stove at the press of a comically big button.

The World is a Complicated Place: "Eat whale and save the planet" - Norwegian lobby

This strikes me as laughable, but at least the issue is being properly framed. "Eat whale and save the planet" - Norwegian lobbyBy Alister Doyle, Environment CorrespondentOSLO (Reuters) - Eat a whale and save the planet, a Norwegian pro-whaling lobby said on Monday of a study showing that harpooning the giant mammals is less damaging to the climate than farming livestock.Environmental group Greenpeace dismissed the survey, saying almost every kind of food was more climate friendly than meat. The survey, focused on whale boats' fuel use, showed that a kilo (2.2 lbs) of whale meat represented just 1.9 kilo (4.2 lbs) of greenhouse gases against 15.8 for beef, 6.4 for pork and 4.6 for chicken."Basically it turns out that the best thing you can do for the planet is to eat whale meat compared to other types of meat," said Rune Froevik of the High North Alliance, which represents the interests of coastal communities in the Arctic."Greenhouse gas emissions caused by one meal of beef are the equivalent of eight meals of whale meat," the study said. The Norwegian-based Alliance said it was the first to measure the "carbon footprint" of whaling. Fish and seafood was comparable to whale meat with relatively low emissions.Norway and Japan, the two main whaling nations, are seeking new arguments to promote whale meat after years of condemnation from anti-whaling nations for breaking with a 1986 moratorium on all hunts meant to save many whale species from extinction.Oslo says, for instance, that the small minke whales it hunts are plentiful in the North Atlantic and that a 2008 Norwegian quota of 1,052 animals will not harm stocks. The meat is eaten mostly as steaks or in stews

How to make methane compressor from bicycle pump? Answered

Methane (biogas) is a byproduct of a number of green alternatives such as a compost heap. This methane can be captured and processed usefully in small volumes. However it must be compressed to some level that will produce a controlled flow, let's say 14-20 pounds per square inch. In fact the methane could be captured and stored in a bicycle inner tube for later processing. Anybody got any thoughts on how a bicycle or small aquarium pump could be modified to compress small quantities of methane?

Using CO2 for a Jetpack blast off smoke prop?

Hey Guys! I'm making a jetpack for this upcoming Halloween. It's going to have lots of moving parts and cool stuff using an arduino, but the most important feature I want is a thick blast off smoke effect. I have been looking online, and it appears to me that a CO2 fire extinguisher would be great. However, these are expensive and not easily modified to be electronically triggered. I've considered a paintball CO2 can and a Sodastream. Will either of these give me the effect I desire, and is this plausible? I'd like the smoke to be at least as thick as the stock photo I attached, hopefully thicker and stronger. Thanks! I'll be sure to post pictures when I finish.

Is it possible to mount a CO2 tank on the side of a painball gun?

I suppose I could just rig something up and attach it through the existing bolt holes, but I was wondering if there was a manufactured product that does this that I could work from. At the moment I have my tank mounted under the front barrel by way of a home-made rack. This works, but messes with the balance of the gun. any tips or links appreciated.

How might I alter a greenhouse paraffin heater to burn more CO2 and less heat, please? Answered

I've built a few things since coming across this site, one of which is a basic hydroponic table for salad greens. I have a paraffin-based greenhouse heater, but I want it to burn with less heat. Do you know if this is possible, please? Alternative suggestions are welcome, with the aim of burning natural fuels to produce CO2. The heat is not needed during these warm days (although it is turning a little colder outside the greenhouse!) I have had a look at 'professional'solutions and they run to about US$500 which is far too much cash. I also checked to see what they did different to a normal burner but other than saying they burn lean they are not helping any further. I'm guessing they burn lean by allowing less oxygen into the fuel/air mix? Thanks for stopping by.
