Pulling cables

Hi, hello, this is my first message and why not my first Idea, for the community and of course for me. Well I decided to join cause I was looking for a solution of a problem I have at my job. I work in a datacenter, and frequently I have to pull delicate cables, which have to run through many corners, sometimes they got stuck between sharp metal pieces on top of the racks, or even the doors. Not only that, but also the times that get to pull them from one place to the other (sometimes cables of 60 or 80 meters. You have to be also carefull on not pulling so much. So I was thinking in to invent something to put in many places as auxiliars that let run the cable in every corner. Many Ideas but I am not in use very frequently with the inventive that your experience have. But I think I discovered what I like most in life. INVENT THINGS.!!!! Cable Ties

At present, I live in a flat I need to connect the indoor tv aerial in the kitchen to a set in the bedroom. This involves leading the cable around doors and possibly across the ceiling, to get to the opposing wall. Under normal circumstance, I could use cable ties with pins, but making holes is not allowed in the flat. I have been told that adhesive cable ties must help, but they appear very difficult to remove, and might leave stains. Any suggestions

Ethernet cable

I have broadband. I'm trying to set up a second network. The first one has a modem and a router. My second network just has a router so far. Since I'm subscribing for the internet, can I make an ethernet to coax cable. What I want to do is take one end of an ethernet cable and one end of a coax cable and put together. Which wires do I put on? This is probably really confusing, but this is the best way I can describe it.

Weird cable? Answered

OK so im wondering if this on the market (a little back story) Im building myself a home media center using an old pc and xbmc. I'd like to connect to my TV through HDMI so i can get full 1080p video from my media center the only problem being is that my old pc doesn't have an hdmi port only a dvi, so i was wondering if a cable or box existed that could combine the dvi from the graphics card and audio from the headphone port into HDMI allowing me to simply plug the other end into my TV.                                       --------DVI (female from graphics card)                                      /   HDMI (male)<---------                                     \                                      --------Audio from PC (female from little green hole by usb slot on the mobo) Something similar to that, preferably cheap otherwise I'll simply pick up a new $50 card from Newegg.

What can I make with old keyboard cables?

I have cannibalised a crate of dead keyboards , preparing for a Maker Fair workshop but now i have miles of straight and coiled cables. Anyone got any ideas what we can make with them? Some have connectors but most dont. Ideally some easy way to get the outer insulation off would be helpful too.

Cable extension parts

I am working on a project involving a Presario V5000 laptop (well mainly its innards) and would love to find extension cables for some of the components.  For example, the keyboard attaches to the motherboard via a 24 pin flat ribbon-like cable (see example image).  It would be great if I could get a simple extension piece (male to female) to give me any additional length, but I cant seem to find anyone that makes this, or what the techincal name is for that type of cable. (is it even a cable?  Is it a flexible circuitboard?) Anyone aware of a good vendor for hard to find laptop accessories like this??

Serial to USB cable?

I have a serial cable for my Garmin Etrex, one side a serial plug the other goes to my GPSR. I am about to get rid of my desktop and only use my laptops but I don't have a serial port on either. Knowing this the serial cable is useless unless I spend another $40 - $50 on a "Serial to USB Converter". So, I cut it to see what and how many wires are inside of it and found only three. I was thinking of making my own cable but I don't understand the difference between the two ports. I saw the GPS 'ible here and it's no help unless you don't have the serial cable already... Here are my questions:1. As long as I connect the proper data in, data out and ground to the USB cable shouldn't it work?2. Are serial ports and USB ports that much different?I read a lot on the pfrancs website and i noticed a few of the connectors looked like they may have had USB cables hooked to them. I've searched and searched but came up with squat! If you have a really good understanding about USB and serial ports can you please help me or direct me to someone who can? Thanks in advance!

fixing a laptop cable

Hello all! Love this site. First time poster. I have a problem with my laptop cable. It stopped working--I had to maneuver it into all sorts of strange positions to get it to charge my laptop. It finally refused my attempts by not charging at all. So I did the least sensible thing possible and cut into it with wire cutters to see if it was a frayed cable that I could possibly just wrap with electrical tape. Because the adapter was real bendy, more bendy then usual. I thought something inside wasn't connecting right. So now I have a really messed up laptop cable. There seems to be only one wire that extends from the adapter into the cord. I kinda cut into that too by mistake. At the end of the adapter there is a metal knob type thing, I don't know what its for but it doesn't really look like it connects to the cable. Is it fixable? I have beginner soldering skills. I've looked at other laptop cord repair instructables, but I'm not even sure where to begin. Thanks for any help! -Gil

Ribon cable colors

Hi all,   I just read the "Web controlled powerstrip" by rleddington. A great build and it brought something to mind; Most everybody knows the resistor color code. The rainbow ribbon cables follow that same code. A lot of folks are unaware of this. There are ten colors and if you have more than ten wires, the color pattern repeats. If you know resistor code, this makes it a lot less confusing when wiring up a lot of circuits. If you follow the pins number/color on one end, the other end goes real easy without having to look up or follow a chart you made.   Hope this helps! Thanks again for all the great projects.

Sports without cable?

Our cable company is terrible. We've tried getting satellite (directv) but there is a big tree in the way and we rent so we can't do anything about that. You can get good quality versions of all of the actual shows that we watch online somewhere (directly from the network's website, hulu, etc). And watching them that way gives you all of the convenience of having a DVR - watch whenever, rewind, fast forward, pause, etc. Also, our TV has a PC input (which we use frequently). So I was thinking of getting a cheap computer to leave hooked up to the TV and set it up to easily navigate through shows. That way we could get rid of our EXPENSIVE and CRAPPY cable. The only problem is sports. I couldn't care less about them but I live with my boyfriend, who loves hockey. Hockey is the hardest sport to watch with low resolution (the puck is tiny! I can't find it in HD sometimes). It's also never shown on the local channels (so no option of the cheapy cable or using some kind of antenna). NHL.com has a subscription you can get to watch online but it won't show you games if it's available on your local cable. So basically - does anyone know of a good place online to watch live (preferably free and good quality) sports? Hockey is the most important but also football/baseball/basketball. Any help would be appreciated!

HDMI to VGA cable? Answered

Cable remote control

Hi all I am interested in building a specialised tracked vehicle but instead of your "normal" remotes I would prefer a cable remote control that can at least use 12 or more functions. I actually look of building this in to a small Metal Case like you use for camera equipment with a monitor in the Lid and include the battery pack to power everything.  Anyone got any ideas of how to build such a remote and the outlay of the functions. I have some knowledge in electric and schematic. I do have a CTC 3D Printer with Dual Extruder but I only just got this one and have so far not used it as I want first to get the feel for it on how to work with it and look up a variety of videos on YouTube before I use this one in anger. I also do not yet have the Case as I am still bidding on one on eBay. I plan to start the build in September / October and be looking at the moment for a large (1/16 or larger) Tracked Vehicle Chassis. I once did see one in a Chinese Online Shop but cant find it again. I am sure that I bookmarked it but again, I cant find it. So I am looking over various online shops for a set but so far I had no success. If anyone has build something similar before please get in touch with me as this is my first real project that i would really love to pull of over the winter time to hopefully use next summer.

Problem with audio-cables/soldering

I bought sum cables (dual-lines) and want to solder stereo jacks, but then i found out that a phone jack got three points to solder although there are only two cable-lines leavin the jack - i would like to know how to solder that. The project is: We got a flat share here and i wanted to connect all computers (that got stereo jacks) with a switch (4 connectors per channel) and connect the switch with a pair of boxes in our kitchen so that we can chose the line in from the switch and not have to pump up the volume in our rooms to listen to our music while being in our kitchen; so there's 3 computers[stereo jack out] -> [4 line cable-ins]switch->[4 line cable outs] -> [not defined in; eventually stereo jack outs->stereo jack in-active-]boxes and i got this dual-lined cable (solid twisted copper; 100meters-spin), a pack of each kind of stereo jack plugs. What do i do to get sound?

Does a USB flash drive need the power cables found in a USB extension cable, or does it only need the data cables?

So, I have a project I hope to complete in modifying a tron identity disc.   Here is my hopeful setup: A flash drive is hidden inside the disc with a usb power cord extension going from it to the outside world.  My hope is to have the 5V of power coming from my computer turn on a set of extra LEDs in the disc, while the data can be accessed and transferred.  Does a USB flash drive need the power inputs from a normal USB cord to function?

how to wire a light socket?

Hello,  Me and my girlfriend live in this old apartament building build around 1910.  one of the rooms in our apartament is lacking lighting. and id have a light socket that id like to install. below im attaching images of the place in the ceiling where the light should be.  the wires of the light socket i have got does not have any coloring.  there are 2 silver wires wrapped in transparent plastic sleeves. one of the sleeves has a small bump on it. there is no writing.  i tried to follow some instruction materials but cant reason much through it.  in that room there is a box to turn the light on, and a plug socket. the wire from it goes to middle of the room with this space for light which is on the picture. then from there another second wire to plug socket at the end of the room.  i already know that i need to turn off electricity in the house and about safety. i tried to wire the socket based on instructions found elsewhere first but there was still no light in the room. the plug sockets in the room work without any problems.   i appreciate all the help.  thanks a lot.
