Camera Flash capacitor

First off I'll tell you to NOT TOUCH A CHARGED CAMERA CAPACITOR, IT HURTS. I had a disposible film camera that I took apart. How do I discharge it? If I cut one of the leads off the compacitor would it discharge or explode, damage the circuit board? How long would it take to self discharge?

Disposable Camera Hack?

Hi, im building a capacitor bank for my coilgun, and I have 17 disposable camera capacitors in them. (wired in parallel (or whatever one means + is atached to +, and - is atached to -)) But for some reason wenever I start chrging it, after a little wile, it makes a huge spark across one  of the capacitors. That probobly means its arcing right? but its only 300 volts (there wired in parelell so only the amperage goes up, not the volts).  I then tryed to charge the caps to a point before they arced, wich took about 1 min (the battery is full) and my ammo only shot 3 inches! 17 capacitors, charging for 1 min, and it slid across the floor 3 inches! I have no idea what im doing wrong. Im using wire from a microwave motor  (wich is realy small) for the coil, and its 5 layers thick, wrapped around a hollowed out pen. So, to sum it all up, here are the main problems: 1) the caps arc when charging 2) the ammo only goes 3 @#%!ing INCHES!!!!!! arg! Ps, i heard someware, that if you have enought amps, it will arc even with lower voltages. Maby thats whats happening?

Free disposable camera's or their capacitors

I want to try my hand at making a very powerful coilgun but I live in a small town and our photography store doesn't sell used cameras for less than $3 each! Which means $30-40 or more for the coilgun I want and I don't have that much to spare :( So I'm hoping someone in Australia can possibly send me as many used cameras or capacitors as they can spare, I'd be willing to pay for them as well as shipping

Charging camera flash capacitors from mains supply

Hi everyone, I have a quick question about charging some capacitors.  I'm trying to make a very simple ignition system using capacitors from disposable camera flash circuits.  I'm planning on using maybe 5 or so.  They are rated at 330V and 120uF.  If I were to hook them up in parallel, so that i have a total of ~600uF, could I use a full-wave bridge recifier diode to turn the AC into DC and simply charge it like that without anything else in the circuit.  I don't know how to explain this very well so I attatched a schematic so you can see what I'm talking about.  Any help is much appreciated.. P.S. Ignore the fact that the full-wave rectifier looks messed up, Circuitlab.com doesn't have a f-w r symbol.  Thanks again!

What capacitance is a TO412 capacitor?

It came from a disposable camera and has no informational markings. The camera's a few years old so I can't get any manufacture's info. The "o" could be a zero for all I know, and it also says "PET" below that.

Capacitor bank troubles

I have wired 5 capacitors from disposable cameras in parallel and reattached them correctly to the charging circuit of one of the cameras. They charge as usual, but using my multimeter I find it only charges to about 330 volts. Also, when I touch the two ends of the wires I have hanging off to shock things are touched to a piece of metal, the spark doesn't appear to be louder, brighter, or any more intense. I have included a diagram, so please tell me if there is something I am missing. My goal is to create either a coil gun, or a "flash plate" where I have about 30 camera flash bulbs on a breadboard all linked to a very large capacitor bank to try to get an almost violent flash able to be seen for miles. So far I haven't even been able to light up a flashbulb that I have hooked up to the capacitor bank. Here is the setup:

Would a disposable FujiFilm camera's capacitor be lethal? The capacitor has no markings. Answered

I want to make a shocker, and after reading something here I'm considering just leaving the capacitor out of the camera charging circut for safety. The capacitor has writing giving away the ratings on it, and I simply need to know that I won't kill my buddy with it. Oh yes, and would the charge of an AA battery ran through the circut be enough to shock someone?

ABOUT A CAPACITOR CHARGER

AHHH, Hello everyone. I'm a filipino male college nursing student and a hobbyist. Concerning about the capacitor chargers that I have found about this site and which I'm common about using disposable camera as charger. Well here's my problem and the one I'm finding difficult for my self because I have just only a very little Knowledge about Electronics. For the many sites I visit none of it provides me an easy way of Building a Capacitor charger with LED indicator not using a disposable camera. What I need was a detailed and step by step instructions and easy for me to understand schematics and also the parts needed and its values cause sometimes i'm having troubles and difficulties for electronic symbols about on making a capacitor charger including all their connections or were to connect and wire those parts. I also find it difficult to build because some transformers have 5 pins or leads like on disposable cameras while the big ones have only 4. I'm building my own coilgun and it really works, now what i need was how to build a Fast charging capacitor charger like those that I found on many sites. Just like a other professional and amateur hobbyist I'm just a little one who was just starting. I would really as in really appreciate all the helps....THANKS!!!!!!!! And by the an easy steps in making a homemade stepup Transformer using a house hold materials would also be helpful!!! Thanks again!!! Here's my E-mail>>>>> girudo_sinister@yahoo.com

HV capacitor bank charge indicator?

Hello! I have a capacitor bank with three 330v capacitors (from disposable cameras, of course... those things are awesome) connected in parallel, but I'm planning to add more. I'd like to indicate when the device has been charged using an LED, but I'm pretty sure that most LEDs can't handle 330v. The disposable cameras often have indicator lights, so how do they do it, and how can I implement it with more capacitors?

need help with capacitor charger

I am new to this so please excuse my stupidity. I want to make a capacitor charger (for a small coil gun) I know there are instructables about them but they are all with chargers that came from a camera which I really don't want to do because i would like to make my own circuit that i can play around with and not blow it up by accident. If someone has a link to a project like this please post if not i have another question. Could I just take let's say a camera that has an 80uF 330v cap and switch it with a parallel bank that has 5 or more 220uF 25v caps or something larger. Would that work or would that blow the circuit or would it be better to buy the same caps as the camera and hook them together. Thanks

How much Joule does a coilgun need?

So I always wanted a coilgun but in germany there arent any stores that give away used cameras with flash for free because they all send them away whole to a factory for development. I recently bought a pack of random capacitors for 2,50€ and now im asking myself if the capacitors in it are enough. There are many different caps in it but the biggest  are : one 63V 1000µF and six 100V 100µF.  The single big one has a power of 1.985 J and the six small ones a power of 3 J together. I dont want a gun to kill people but i still want it to shoot and penetrate paper and stuff like that. So how much Joule do i need for the gun to work properly

capacitor bank questions.

Hello all, this'd be the first post i've ever made, and may be in the wrong place....... edit- i guess it was in the wrong place, since no one replied.... so i'll try here.... i'm tryin to make a cap bank from 30+ flash cameras (possible? possible outputs? how do i calculate that?)  and i have some question/problems. is it possible to take a bank like the above and use as a spot welder?   if so, how would i trigger the spark without the trigger becoming the spark gap?  another possible use i have for it is a rail gun...... theoretically, if counter evidence isn't provided by all of you much more tech inclined ibblers a second concern is that the caps come in at least three different micro farad ratings. would one explode if it's rating is lower than the higher ones?  (the ratings are between 80ish to 150 ish (don't remember)) i rather need the weilder for a possible steampunk project that i just bought a bunch of metal junk for....(knowing me though, i'll never get around to doing it....)

Disposable Camera Flash Circuit? Answered

I was making a coilgun through the flash circuit of a fujifilm disposable camera and multiple other capacitors I had laying around and I wanted to have the capacitors in a separate spot from the charging circuit.  However, I accidentally nudged the capacitor that was already on the circuit a bit too hard and ripped up some of the copper connections underneath.  Typically I can usually find another place to solder the ends of the component back to the circuit by looking at the circuit board and connecting the leads to something that is also connected to where the part is supposed to be. But there happened to be some sort of blue plastic film covering that specific part of the circuit board which i cannot take off and is preventing me from seeing where else I can place the leads of the capacitor.  If someone is familiar with this could you please tell me where I can solder them on?  The flash circuit is from a QUICKSNAP-FLASH400 model fujifilm disposable camera. Thanks!

Capacitor bank charger question.

I know alot of people use a standard disposable camera's circuit board as a charger for coil guns, but would this be sufficient for a bank of ~20 of those capacitors? If not, what would I use to charge it? They are 330v 80uF capacitors, by the way. EDIT: Or would there be a way to modify the existing charger circuit to charge the larger amount of capacitors?

Capacitors, where to get them? Answered

For a school project, Me and my friend build a medium sized railgun, however, we can't keep the capacitors we used to power it. My question would be, Where can I get some capacitors to replace the used capacitorbank. I am looking for capacitors with both a high voltage rating, and a large amount of capacitance. (the total bank contained 8 1000uF, 385 volt capacitors, I would like to get at least half of this out of my replacement-bank) so does anyone know: places where I can buy this kind of capacitors for a small amount of money, which do ship in europe. common used electronics containing this kind of capacitors to salvage. I already found some in a computer PSU, one in a computer monitor. And I know they are used in disposable flash cameras, which are not very much used any more, and can hardly be found here (Unless I buy them, which is going to cost me a very large amount of money) Places where those capacitors are commonly used, and where I might get them for little money. They don't actually need to have the exact same voltage and capacitance, but I would prefer them to be somewhat close to it. ( > 100 uF, > 100 Volts) I am also looking for a new charger. chargers from disposable cameras might work, but tend to overheat and break down rather fast, I would like to know if there is something better.
