Chinese Translation? Answered

What, if anything, do these Chinese characters mean?  I've intentionally hidden the context - I'll tell you later if the translation doesn't make it clear.  I've tried Google images for the individual characters but just get Chinese pages containing them and no translation.

Chinese Knotting

Chinese knots are, in some ways, similar to Celtic knots. Each knot represents a particular traditional Chinese form, and in many cases are representative of Buddhist precepts like the continuation of life. Chinese knotted jewelry usually incorporates a main jade or stone centerpiece and jade, stone, coins or glass beads. The cord from the knots usually is extended upward to make a lanyard for a necklace, but with some bracelet styles the knot or knots are extended around the wrist with a macramé style knot. Chinese knotting was nearly lost as an art form. In recent years, several books teaching knotting techniques have been released. The cord used in making the knots is readily available at craft or fabric stores. Josephine Knot (Chinese Double Coin Knot) http://www.bridgat.com

Chinese Fur Farms

My Friend sent me this shocking video in an email, and made me join a petition to stop it. this is to discuss it, and if you want to stop it, please leave a comment. below is the video link http://www.peta.org/feat/ChineseFurFarms/index.asp WARNING. this is grosser and more wrong than anything you have ever seen. I strongly reccomend that you don't watch it, but just read. if you chose not to watch it, then the video shows chinese people grabbing pups, smashing them on the ground so they won't have the strength to run, then cutting the skin around their ankles, then peeling it off over the poor things head. the only thing is, the animal isn't even unconsious, and then they are chucked onto a rotting pile while they wait in excruciating pain to die. you can even see their hearts beating. if you want to stop this shXt, then please leave a comment saying so.

50cc Chinese scooter problems? Answered

I have a 2001 Chinese scooter, 50cc, and it has some problems... We took the handlebars off to fit it in a vehicle for transport (Yeah, stupid idea, I know now...), and now, the wiring is all messed up. First off, the electric start won't work anymore, I'm going to go through, and check a relay and the battery voltage tomorrow. Second, when I kick start it, and yes, It'll kick start, but only after 50 some kicks.. But when I kick start it, the engine starts going full throttle, but the throttle is not twisted at all. Throttle cable problem? Lastly, the turn signals are messed up a bit. The right blinker flashes one of the headlights inside of the blinker.... What the hell? All the wires are connected correctly. Please help!! Thanks!

K40 Chinese laser conversion to Arduino

After fixing most of the issues on cheap laser cutter I am about to do the next step and install an Arduino board to get rid of the dongle and crappy controller. I also would like to put this in the form of a nice Instructable so others can upgrade their machines as well. But during my research I noticed that several different versions of the controller, laser power supply and control panel exist. If you are interested in upgrading your machine so you can use Inkscape directly and no longer need a dongle and crappy software: Post a pic of your laser power supply (including a clear pic of the connection terminals), a pic of your control panel (both from the outside and the bottom), let me know if you already have safety switches for the lid and water flow. Everything posted here in time will be included in the Instructable if it is different from my machine. Once the Ible is finnished you will get detailed instructions on what you need, how to program the Arduino, get the plugins working in Inkscape and how to do your first real engravings and cuttings on the new setup after calibrating everything. Here is a video showing raster and vector engraving followed by cutting the piece out - what more can I ask for if only spare parts are used? ;) https://youtu.be/GqFTPMBchyQ

The oldest known astronomical atlas -- ca. 667 CE !

I ran across a preprint today which I find wonderfully impressive. It documents a Chinese astronomical atlas prepared some time between 649-684 CE (AD, for the oldsters) , and covering the complete visible sky of the Northern Hemisphere. Star positions are accurate to within a couple of degrees (with naked eye observations). As the authors write in their abstract, This set of sky maps (12 hour angle maps in quasi-cylindrical projection and a circumpolar map in azimuthal projection), displaying the full sky visible from the Northern hemisphere, is up to now the oldest complete preserved star atlas from any civilisation. It is also the first known pictorial representation of the quasi-totality of the Chinese constellations.

Instructables Stickers in Taiwan

A few months ago Instructables user Cousin Steve contacted us about printing up some Instructables stickers to hand out at a DIY event in Taiwan. We thought this was a great idea so I sent Cousin Steve the source files for the Instructables stickers. He then took some awesome initiative and translated our slogan into Chinese, printed up a couple hundred stickers, and has been handing them out to people in Taiwan ever since!Needless to say we were very impressed and excited with his work. We've told him so, and sent him an Instructables robot t-shirt to thank him for helping us spread the word about Instructables to such a far away place. If anyone else is interested in printing up Instructables stickers in their area you can download the original files below, translate the text as necessary, and print up some of your very own stickers to hand out. We just request that anyone making any changes to the designs below run them by us first so before having them printed up.Nice job Cousin Steve!

Has anyone any knowledge of whether the Richard T LaPiere Poll experiement has been updated since 1930?

In 1930,  Richard T. LaPiere deomonstrated that, at least in some areas of life, people did not always DO what they said they did,  nor did they always "believe" what they said they did.  He took some friends of his on a trip across the USA;  they were of Chinese decent, but spoke unbroken English.  They were turned away from only one establishment out of hundreds.  Detailed records were kept of everything that happened on the trip.  Once home, he "polled" these same hotels and found that, except for a VERY few (one to be exact and one abstained) all of them said they would NOT harbor someone of Chinese decent in their hotel. To make sure the trip itself had not influenced the owners,  he polled places he had not gone and got the same results.   No one would say they would accept them in their establishment.  Remember, this was 1930.   This throws out an interesting dynamic.  If people generally do not do what they claim they will do (for whatever reasons.....) then polls and questionaires are not really worth very much. Anyone know of any updated studies on this subject?

Instructables in Chinese, German, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish!

Here's some exciting news. Instructables is now available in five new languages!: Chinese, German, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish! These aren't linked anywhere from the English version of the site, and there are errors and bugs, but we're ready for you to start checking it out and helping us make it better. Currently, you can only author Instructables in languages other than English (or at least marked as Spanish, Portuguese, etc..) from the iOS mobile app and the new editor. The Android app will follow soon and the new editor will shortly become the default editor. For those of you who are multi-lingual, would you please translate your existing Instructables, and share it with your friends who don't speak English? Instructables' mission of helping you share what you make and find inspiration from others is clearly not limited by language. I'm proud that we're now more inclusive. Let us know what you think, and please report bugs in the bugs forum category.

Powderly Released From Prison - Plans Instructable

As you may have heard instructables friend James Powderly was being held by the Chinese government for planning a pro-Tibet laser tagging event. He was held for 6 days and was finally released on monday. Here's what he had to say in a statement on Artnet:Powderly, who feels he was subjected to psychological torture, nevertheless stresses that what he went through pales in comparison to the ordeal of political prisoners or other inmates. He intends to share his experience with human rights groups and politicians, as well as with the public through his art. "They're going to really wish that they killed my ass," he said.If you're interested in his experience you can check out the article at Artnet, or you can wait for Powderly's own instructable in which he plans to instructablize his "Beijing projection machine" calling it "How to Get Yourself Thrown in a Chinese Jail." And from the test image you see below, it looks like it's going to be great. We're glad you're back and safe, James.

Are these power supplies good?

The cheap bare metal power supplies from ebay or other sides have been reviewed many times on youtube and people have found that they are actually decent. But I cannot find any reviews of the sealed plastic kind of power supplies. The "bare metal" ones I am talking about look like this, and the "sealed plastic" ones look like this and this. Edit: None of your replies answer my question. I am not asking which one I should choose, I am asking if the plastic ones are just as decent as the metal ones. There are a few reviews of the metal ones, and people have found that they are actually quite decent. Here are some: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwFrP7uK5lM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71NWT5vrbk8 But I cannot find any reviews of the plastic ones, so I don't know if they are just as good. I am asking if anyone has gotten any of these and made a review with some tests, or knows of a review of these.

Chinese Spies Hack Gmail Accounts: Google Gets Angry

Google Threatens To Quit China Over 'Spies' 10:05am UK, Wednesday January 13, 2010 Peter Sharp, China correspondent Google has threatened to pull its operation out of China, claiming cyber spies have penetrated the system. The internet giant said "highly sophisticated" attacks had been launched to hack into e-mail accounts of human rights activists in China and around the world. "These attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered - combined with the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the web - have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China," Google chief legal officer David Drummond said in a blog post. Chinese authorities said they were "seeking more information on Google's statement that it could quit China", the official Xinhua news agency said, citing a government official. The unnamed official from China's State Council Information Office also said: "It is still hard to say whether Google will quit China or not. Nobody knows." Google's threat came after it announced it would no longer censor search results in China. Searches on google.cn for the iconic photo of a man standing in front of a line of tanks in Tiananmen Square in 1989 found the image immediately, as well as results for other sensitive topics such as the Dalai Lama and the banned Falungong spiritual group. No company should be forced to operate under government threat to its core values or to the rights and safety of its users. Leslie Harris, of the Centre for Democracy & Technology Google said 20 other companies had been targeted including media, finance, chemical and technology sites. "Google has taken a bold and difficult step for internet freedom in support of fundamental human rights," said Leslie Harris, president of the US-based Centre for Democracy & Technology. "No company should be forced to operate under government threat to its core values or to the rights and safety of its users." At Google's offices in Beijing, human rights activists laid a bouquet of red roses and white lilies in support of the company. "We want to express outrage, but not at Google. Coming here is a type of support for Google," said IT worker Zhao Gang. "Google faces very strict and adverse conditions in China. Something we knew in our hearts is now out in the open. I believe it's a watershed moment for the internet in China this year." Google stressed that the decision to review its controversial operations in China had been taken by the company's US executives and not by staff in China.   For some, it seems to be too little, too late considering the strict censorship the Chinese government enforces.  However, by playing by the rules, Google was able to get its foot in the door and now has some potential leverage.

Is it alright if I peel off big peices of skin that are just barely attached to my chinese water dragon? Answered

My Chinese Water Dragon is almost always shedding in at least one spot, and I was wondering, is it harmful in any way to pull of a big peice that is mostly shed, but just sitting on him?  I have been keeping reptiles for years, but this is one question I have.  Does it harm his new skin in any way?  I have been doing so, and he seems fine, but is there a problem with that?
