We understand you can run two systems but would like to format a hard drive and try Linux on an older machine. Would appreciate which kernel to down load. We would like to use it for Email, web browsing, word processing, and pictures. Any comments would be appreciated. Ross

A had this idea of hiding a pc behind the toilet and then having an arm that can swing out with a an lcd on it. I took some measurements and I think I would have to make a custom case out of wood so it be 2 inches thick. The image upload wasn't working.Bathroom measurementshttp://gmod-tv.com/Bathroom.jpgComputerhttp://gmod-tv.com/comp1.jpg

I unplugged my SATA HD to take to my friends to reformat. When we plugged it in it gave him the blue screen. He told me to take it home and see if it still works on my PC. I plugged the HD and my moniter responded by going into power saver. I checked both sides of my VGA cable so it isn't that. PLEASE HELP!!!!

I have a Dell Dimension 4600C, but it was ruined when my room was flooded (Thanks Joe the Plumber!). I know the power supply is fried (no power comes out, the circuit board looks white and wet), but I'm not sure if the motherboard is bad. Only the bottom 1/2 inch got wet, and it looks fine. Everything else in the computer works, but the computer was plugged in when it died. Is there a way to test the motherboard (without another computer or PSU)? Should I buy a PSU without knowing if the motherboard works? A new motherboard is too expensive, I might as well get a new computer, but the power supply is only $20. Henry

Anybody interested in an instructable on building this desk that I'm going to build in the near future, it takes 1 and 1/2 sheats of 3/4th inch plywood to build. It's wide enough to hold up to 3 21 inch monitors. It can hold just about any mid tower computer nicely, and under it i will be putting in a drawer but these aren't the final plans so I don't want to design a drawer just yet, next to the keyboard pullout would probably be a place to store documents, or in my case drawings. and on the right you'd have your multi purpose shelving may end-up making the spaces non permanent. Dunno we'll see how things go, I may not even use these plans.

Hello all. I have been having a really fun time going through the forums lately. I started in the tech section or whatever it is called. I have no idea what page I am on but I know I am looking at posts that are about 3 years old. Not looking at every single post of course but about 5-7 posts per page. But that is all besides the point, let me get to my question. The other day just because I happened to have an s-video cable around I hooked one of our laptops to the TV. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the image on the TV. So I have decided to make an audio cable for it and start to use the computer on the TV for some stuff. Money is tight around here (that is why I am making the audio cable and not buying one) and we do not have cable TV. All we have is a converter box and ever since a really bad storm about 1 1/2 months ago we barely get any channels. I am still trying to get management of my building to look at the antenna on the roof. But after I saw what kind of quality the laptop had on the TV we are starting to look at getting netflix. Figure it is only $7.99 per month and you get your first month free so I think it is worth checking out. Since it looks like we will be using a computer with the TV quite often I have decided to make a media computer out of one of the towers sitting around here. I am not worried about the power of the computer since the tower I have in mind is not all that old. But I am trying to decide what OS to put on it. I know there is a "Windows media" edition but I do not know much about it other then I think it is getting quite old. I am leaning towards putting either XP or Windows 7 on it since I have those disks. But I thought I would ask on here for peoples input on the matter. I plan on networking the computer to my windows 7 desktop in order to access my 1tb hard drive for stuff I download. My wife will be using this computer too so that is part of the reason I am leaning towards windows xp or 7 so she will not feel lost in some OS she does not know. So now you have all the details. Should I just go with XP or 7, or is there something else I should look at?

Hi :DMy old computer has died and I'm planning on just ripping it apart and salvaging bits and bobs for a new build, Here's my plan:CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo Desktop Processor E8600Graphics card: GeForce 9800 GX2RAM: 4GBWiFi card: some brand, i haven't researched yetCase: Jeantech JNR-105 Luna ATXMy main problem is i cant decide on which Motherboard... do motherboards come with their own power supply? I think a 500 watt power supply would be more suited than the current 300 watt. which leads me to another question, can people recommend cooling options? (not water cooling though, i dont trust it enough to have hundreds of pounds of hardware surrounded by water)

I was using my computer and then all of a sudden it turned off! Now won't switch on again. I have hoovered it out and I let it cool down. When I switch it on The cooling fan for the processor jumps but doesn't move, and a red light under the power symbol flashes and there is no signal being sent to the monitor. Also the fan for the psu does not move. Nothing on the mother board looks like it has burned out. I was only running the internet. I am now using an old laptop All comments welcome Oscar

I'm developing a holder for my Droid smart phone, that would allow me to use it like a wrist computer, while protecting the phone at the same time. Would anyone be interested in an instructable? I could make it so that the plans would be adaptable to most any touchscreen smart phone (I can't promise it would work for every phone, but I'll try to make the plans as universally adaptable as I can.)

So, in continuing my series of stupid newbie computer questions, I present: Building Your Own Computer!-The Computer-As you've heard, I first had a computer that messed up, then I took it to the computer dudes, and they said it was completely FUBAR, then I asked how I should salvage it. Now, after laying my eyes on the beautiful Linux-running $72 Computer, I said to myself that I should make one...-What I Have-I stripped my computer tonight, and I came up with a CD drive (doesn't burn, just reads), Floppy drive, hard drive, power supply (how the heck do I understand all those wires?), nice looking heatsink with matching fan, and various other parts from the Windows 98 computer. -The Problems--I checked the links provided at the link above, and the prices had either raised, the item is out of stock, or the item had vanished completely...-I would like to buy a minimum of parts because I am in debt with my parents, and being 13, I don't have a job to pay them off.-I would like to run Linux, as it is one of the coolest things I've found recently. -I do know that the link above is thumb-drive booted, and I would like to avoid that, but no biggie if I can't.-I also don't know that much about computers, so I want to keep the computer sweet and simple. -The components that I salvaged might not work with the new components (I.E. Motherboard)-Maybe more.-Pluses--It will be cheap.-Case mods should be easy.-Mistakes dont cost much.-Linux is free.-Linux looks very nice.-It shouldn't need much RAM to run (Am I correct here?), so I can run more complex programs without it costing me.-I have extra parts from the old Win98 computer that died.-Probably more, but this is all I got right now...First postSecond postI am saying this right now- I suck at understanding computers, and if possible, comment to me like you would your 93 year old grandpa.

On the back of a computer wheres the fan
I have a used computer I bought yesterday and I have a problem. I was adding parts for a computer that "died" and I ran into a problem. I added some RAM and it worked fine. The problem came when I tried to add the hard drive. I pluged it in and while it was starting it said it couldn't find the boot file. I shut it down, removed the hard drive and now in says " NTLDR is missing". WHAT HAPPENED???
