It's just a curiosity. Anyway, so there I was, reading up on railguns (just for the heck of it), and after reading the part mentioning "millions of amps", it got me thinking, "What power source can provide millions of amps?" Then and there, I thought, "Lightning!", but how I could I use it? Wait... Oh, cranes! I could stick the railgun on a crane, then whenever the crane gets hit by lightning, it would fire a projectile! Now, who's willing to risk their lives to load a piece of metal up there? :D Nah, just joking. Anyway, I was just wondering if this idea would be feasible in the first place, and what would it take to implement.

Ok. I need to create a camera crane. It dosn't have to be very big since I'm using it for stop motion. Just a simple pan and tilt crane with a counterweight to off-set the camera. Now, I can make a regular one very simply using a video crane method that you can find on this site. However, this crane must do 2 things. 1. It must be able to move at incredibly small increments. Only fractions of an inch at a time. 2. The crane must be able to hold it's position in a very sturdy manner. It cannot move even in the slightest because stop-motion requires that the camera does not move at all while individual pictures are being taken. For the life of me, I can't figure it out. Traditionally, a "step motor" is used to create the individual movements for things like this. But they are incredibly expensive. I've had more luck with gears and servos, however I want to figure out the logistics before I just go buy gears individually on a website that may or may not work. Your help would be appreciated. It's been years since I've posted here, but I have an idea that might benefit those who like to make short films on an indie budget. I've had a design for an all-aluminum and stainless DIY jib crane kit that I could sell for under $180. It would have full ball-bearing movement and axes that can be locked. The kit would come with all of the hardware and parts except for the tripod and the aluminum rails, which every home depot and lowes sell (1"x1"x6-10' box aluminum). I would supply templates for the holes. I'm in college now and without a machine shop, but I know of a shop that could mill the parts out for enough money to allow me to offer the kit for a nominal fee. Keep in mind that there really is not a kit or crane out there that can lift 20-30lbs (and be completely waterproof) for under $350. Most cranes are even more than that. Before I put the details of the plan on paper, I need to know if there's a market for something like this, because the initial investment is a few hundred dollars and the shop doesn't do small runs. Parts would be 100% CNC'd and anodized for a nominal fee. My questions: -Where and who should I market this to? -What forums would have an audience that this would appeal to? Any help is appreciated, I'm not so much into videography as I am into making photography equipment.

Cranes are used to move loads from one location to another in minimum time such that the load reaches its destination without swinging. As we all know, that swinging problem occurs due to flexibility of wires but if the wire is rigid and permanently fixed on one side then ???As per the sketch there will be a telescopic arm and one side of the arm will be attached with the trolley of the crane. This rigid telescopic arm will be connected with the load at the time of lifting the load. In this way there will be no problem of swinging as the rigid telescopic arm will be fixed with the trolley and wires will work to lift the load so there is no chance of swinging of load.My solution can achieve these following points at the time of construction.Improved Safety High-Precision Moves Increased ProductivityEasily Implemented on Existing tech Save time Save energy to reduce carbon Cost as the crane can work at the time of high speed air. A 328 foot crane built by ZPMC near Shanghei, China capable of lifting 1800 tons at a time was brought into the Port of Oakland two weeks ago aboard a partially submersible transport ship. It is the largest marine crane to ever work on the west coast.I had been noticing the absolutely massive red white and blue crane on my commute over the bridge to work for a few days, but was unable to find any info on it. Thankfully a project associate from the Public Information Office of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Seismic Safety Retrofit Projects was nice enough to email me back about my query with the relevant info. At an industial facicilty that cuts and welds polypropylene sheet to make huge tanks for steel mills and other industries, three buildings, 24000 sq. ft fabrication area, 4000 sq. ft for mixed sizes of offices, 5 propane forklifts, 1 mobile crane, 4 overhead cranes, 2 utility trucks, 2 heavy duty pickup trucks, several powertools, several extrusion machines, various rigging lifting and handling apparatus, a 25HP rotary screw compressor and a 10HP dual piston compressor, various shop machines and saws, seveveral pneumatic presses and fusion machines, and tons of other miscellaneous stuff. How many guys do I need to maintain it all?

Scrabble is an obsession and I can completely understand why a couple would show so much love for the game that they would make an absolutely huge waterproof version for their backyard. Yup, it's lawn Scrabble and there's nothing wrong with that.He fashioned the board from pavers laid in a bed of sand â€” 225 of them, to be exact. He installed them all in one day and had the back pain to prove it.Jane Crane painted the bonus square in the proper colors and made letter tiles from craft-store wood plaques. She took apart shelves and reconfigured the pieces to make tile racks, and pavers and tiles were sealed to prevent water damage.Now Scrabble games at the Crane house are a physical as well as mental pursuit. The players have to get out of their seats to place their tiles on the board and pick new ones from the selection spread out face down in the grass.They haven't faced many challenges, other than having to light patio torches when darkness falls or dealing with the few times their dog, Maggie, has run across the game board. I've an idea for a project which will need a transparent plastic hemisphere, around 3" to 4" diameter, to house it. Any ideas where I could find something suitable? What would do the job is one of the clear balls from arcade crane grab machines, but I'm looking for something less down to skill, judgement and how much they've rigged the machine.

Not squashed squirrels or a mangled moose, but useful stuff. Let me explain:I was driving along and there was a bright yellow thing in the gutter. It turned out to be one of those hanging crane controls, with a couple of metres of cable attached. She Who Must Be Obeyed wouldn't let me stop and collect it in her car, when I went back later in my car it was gone. Shame.What's the best stuff you have found lying dead in the street?

LEGO and Star Wars fans, get ready to have your mind blown! Flickr member Marshal Banana has created a scale replica of the iconic Sandcrawler, as seen in A New Hope. There are LED's inside and out, faux weathered exterior, an operable ramp that drops down and even a crane that can lift cargo and place it on a conveyor belt inside. And yes, it moves. The entire project took 9 months to plan and build. I've been wanting to teach myself more about mechanics, and I want to work on a rebuild project. There are problems though: my workshop is small, I don't have a shop-crane, and there's not a lot of money to put into it. I was wondering If there are any motors that are just like that of a car's that are small, cheap, and readily available. I've taken apart a few two- and four- stroke engines, nothing more than a lawnmower. I want to self-educate myself more. Thanks.

I've built a sturdy static trapeze (welded bar, spliced rope) and would like to know how to rig it in a cost effective but safe manner. My mounting point is a steel beam, and the two ropes of the trapeze end spliced around 24mm galvanised steel thimbles which I need to fix to the bar. It would be great if methods could be provided that utilise materials found at local hardware stores - I know you can use crane slings but the only supplier I can find is a prohibitively distant one :)

Hi there, My son just received a bunch of older K'nex but without the instruction booklets. Any ideas on how to get booklets from the early 90's. Their website wasn't helpful. I need booklets for GIANT SET that has over 1800 pieces that includes instructions for Tractor Cab, Centerpost Crane and more. Also for the intermediate set that has 770 pieces that will build an airplane, ferris wheel and monster truck. I will take photo copies and would be happy to pay for the copies, shipping and trouble. thank you!! My son just loves to build and he will create what he can.

Both RC helicopters and DSLRs have shown some amazing advances and when they're combined the results are amazing. Eric Austin has a company called Heli Video that specializes in this with a helicopter-mounted Canon 7D and the footage rocks. With a free-roaming helicopter he can get shots that swoop in and out and then look down from above without any need for a crane or anything else. There are also no mistakes allowed as a crash means several thousand dollars worth of gear get wrecked. I can give you an excellent opportunity to learn some things about insect detectors, and to challenge your creativity! I need a some help from a programmer/ technical person for my art project (immediately)- Short about the project: The Project is planned for the end exam exhibition at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, June/ July 2008, but might also be shown at later occasions. The work is an installation with video projections, machines and live insects. A box is located on the top of a pedestal. The box contains crane flies, which will be seen through a small window. The crane fly's movements are intercepted by sensors which translates the movements to commands for a machine. The walls in the room are covered by video projections. By means of wires, the machine can move around in the whole room. Technically what I need is: Through an actometer (insect movement detector) the electric impulses created by the movement of the insects, can be viewed in a software on a computer. What i need to do is to use the graph of movements in the software to send output commands to a machine (made by me, controlled by Remote controlls). I am not sure of how this can be done in the best way possible, but I have some suggestions which I can explain more precisely later on. I am looking for someone who have knowledge in terms of programming, and could be able to come up with a good solution, as well as maybe collaborating/ helping me out with my project. To mark my retirement of making knex guns, From Tuesday the 24th of november, my whole set of K'nex will be up for sale on eBay, which is made up of the power tower crane, space tower, 2 cyber K'nex sets and countless other sets, and includes 4 boxes full of wheels, gears and motors (8 electric motors to be exact), i will ship internationally if requested and if you state that you are a K'nex gunner i will include the orginal semi-auto prototype that i created, a splodies grenade and launcher loaded and ready to fire and a large box of rubber bands free (this will be broken down if a non knex guner buys it) i will post a link to the sale after it has been listed and good luck! pictures uploaded...

I recently bought the C. Crane FM transmitter. I have not had much luck with it even after turning up the pot as described on the internet. However, I am not giving up yet. Below are some possible things that I have thought of to improve the sound quality of the radio at a distance from the transmitter. 1. run wire from the antenna of the FM transmitter to the ductwork in my house. I already tried this. I had better luck attaching the wire to the exterior of the ductwork in my basement rather than the interior of the ductwork. 2. create some sort of repeater(s) to get around walls. This device would have to be a receiver/transmitter. 3. create my own FM transmitter with the best parts that I can find. 4. Use a homeplug system. Your suggestions are much appreciated. I don't know a darn thing about electronics so if you have any recommendations for good books that would be nice.

I am in need of a vertically adjustable wall mount that would hold a 32" LCD TV and raise/lower the tv with 12-24" of travel. I live in an apartment and am on a tight tight tight budget, so I am trying to dual purpose a TV to be both computer monitor and bedroom television. My problem is that when the TV is sitting on the desk, I have to look between my feet to see it from the bed. It just isn't comfortable viewing. If I were to mount it at proper viewing height from the bed, I would be craning my neck to see it. I have scoured the internet and the only mounts they make like this are as expensive as another TV. I am a novice at this kind of thing, so the simpler and cheaper the better. If I could mount some sort of track to the wall and use a heavy pin to set the height or something like that, that would be an idea. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you, Sean

Check out this awesome time-lapse of Burning Man 2007! Video by peef from the Shipyard -- thanks to Star for the link.From peef's notes: The images were captured by a Canon G3 mounted in a weatherproof housing of my own design up on a 20 foot pole next to the Powertainer. There were 18,486 images shot at 2272x1704 which is almost 4 megapixels each. Some of the full-size stills are stunning! The camera was controlled by a custom Daemon I wrote using the Gphoto library, which ran on the Powertainer's Slackware linux system and the images were stored full-size on a hard drive. After the event, I ran another piece of code that downsampled the images to 640x480 then composed them at 30fps into a MPEG-4 video. My friend Tom Sepe added the Music and Titles for me and Voila!The Man burns ( prematurely! ) around 3:55, then is temporarily removed by crane for repairs. The actual burn happens around 8:00. In between you'll catch lots of neon, dust storms, and some beautiful shadows crawling across the playa.Gorgeous still photo taken by Scott Beale of Laughing Squid.

Right, so in "The Big Bang Theory" there is an episode where Sheldon makes an rc stand with a monitor on, and it has live footage of his face on it. There are ways to do this, but they all seem to point to using an rc car with a 10 metre range and 30 minutes battery. The flaw with this, is that if you want to be at work using one, or at someone's house with it, then you're gonna need a lot more than 10 metres! How can you make it so that you can control it anywhere, either using wifi or just connecting somehow? (I'm sorry, I'm really bad at electronics, so excuse my poor understanding.) As an example, you don't need wifi to text someone, so do you need it to control an rc vehicle? Ideally, I'd like to make one at about £300-£400, and as like the one from the big bang theory as possible, so not just a tiny stand that people have to keep charging and you have to crane your neck to see. I'd be happy to use a £60 tablet with skype for the video, but what I'm mainly concerned about is how to control the rc stand/vehicle from a distance away. Thanks a lot! -Finzaz

This is a clam shell bucket, from an old toy crane. I am taking this to a machine shop, welder, had having them make it 18 inches wide. It would be used only with rope, no block and tackle. Problem: As best I can surmise, about 1-10 percent of hand dug, round water wells used by around 4 billion people on the planet are full of silt, dirty, and old plastic jugs used to pull the water up from well. As the silt rises in the well, the wells slowly become too dirty, or the locals need to pull the water out in buckets, then allow the silt water to settle. It is way to expensive for people who earn 10 USD per day to pay people with pumps to drain the wells. I want to create a 1-2 man powered clamshell bucket system to clean these wells. What is the best way to make a method to clean a dug well? How much would the steel, rebar cost? Labor is 10 dollars per day in central American, South America, Africa etc. Thanks for help, I will take the finished bucket to Lome, Togo West Africa to test, and modify, iterate. The Large Hadron Collider(LHC) is to be unveiled this year. It is designed to solve the much talked about energy crisis, and hopes to do so, but can it be worth all of it? From Wikipedia- (On October 25, 2005, a technician, JosÃÂ© Pereira Lages, was killed in the LHC tunnel when a crane load was accidentally dropped. The construction of LHC was approved in 1995 with a budget of 2.6 billion Swiss francs, with another 210 millionfrancs (Ã¢ÂÂ¬140 M) towards the cost of the experiments. However, cost over-runs, estimated in a major review in 2001 at around 480 million francs (Ã¢ÂÂ¬300 M) for the accelerator, and 50 million francs (Ã¢ÂÂ¬30 M) for the experiments, along with a reduction in CERN's budget, pushed the completion date from 2005 to April 2007. 180 million francs (Ã¢ÂÂ¬120 M) of the cost increase have been due to the superconducting magnets. There were also engineering difficulties encountered while building the underground cavern for the Compact Muon Solenoid. In part this was due to faulty parts lent to CERN by fellow laboratories Argonne National Laboratory or Fermilab (home to the Tevatron, the world's largest particle accelerator until CERN finishes the Large Hadron Collider).  The total cost of the project is anticipated to be between US$5 and US$10 billion. On March 27, 2007, there was an incident during a pressure test involving one of the LHC's inner triplet magnet assemblies provided by Fermilab and KEK. No people were injured, but a cryogenic magnet support broke. Fermilab director Pier Oddone stated 'In this case we are dumbfounded that we missed some very simple balance of forces.' This fault had been present in the original design, and remained during four engineering reviews over the following years. Analysis revealed that its design, made as thin as possible for better insulation, was not strong enough to withstand the forces generated during pressure testing. Details are available in a statement from Fermilab, with which CERN is in agreement.)

November 2010 Hello Everybody! We decided to visit valley View Park a couple days ago and boy did we get a surprise. The amount of construction has rocketed sky high in the last two months. we'll start with some pics of the car park. As you can see in the 1st picture the park has begun to make space for an expanded car park as there wasn't much room in the old one. The new car park is just across the road. As you can see in pic 2 the old car park has been asphalted except for a few spaces. All these cars are owned by workers or management. As we got closer to the park we saw the closed sign as seen in pic 3. The reason of this was unknown but we we're determined to find out. Behind the entrance we can see a sign. In pic 4 we can see that it's a logo for the park. It's a scenic picture of trees with Valley View Park written in red. We we're allowed in and went to see the garden. It seems the janitors have to come to the park every now and then to water the plants as can be seen in pic 5. we decided to go see How the rides are going. We asked the man in pic 6 about the new name for Inversion Spinner and we received more information than was expected. Apparently Inversion Spinner will be given a new name, a new colour and it will be relocated.. What is going to replace it is still a mystery but we will do our best to find our. There will be nothing done to Dodgems which can be seen in pic 7. No work has been done on Python or Ferris Wheel as seen in pics 8 and 9 We ran into Mr. Fredrickson before going to see destruction. He stopped us from looking at the construction while we took a picture of Destruction. Pic 10. Mr Fredrickson then let us see what has happened at the construction site. We couldn't believe our eyes. We looked up and saw the start of an inverted coaster! Pic 11. Mr. Fredrickson told us that he was able to contact the popular B&M; company from Switzerland to build a coaster in Valley View park. This makes the coaster the first B&M; in Australia. In pic 12 we can see that there are some fences to stop people from falling out. The first drop looms over the path to Destruction. Pic 13.From the Queue line of Destruction we can see the station of the new coaster. Pic 14. We asked Mr. Frederickson what the name of the coaster will be but he kept that a secret. Form the top of the castle of Blackbeard's voyage we can see the whole coaster so far. As we can see in pic 15 the first hill has been built. It has not been confirmed if there will be any inversions but It will still be exciting nonetheless. In pic 16 we can see the crane working with the track pieces. Mr. Fredrickson said that the park will be closed during Summer break. He hopes the park can receive enough money after Summer Break to maintain the park. He is taking a major risk in this action and he is hoping that the new roller coaster will earn enough profit. Unfortunately we will not be able to talk about Valley View Park until the end of Summer Break. Goodbye everyone. Stay tuned.
