I'm using Windows XP on a desktop computer Firefox I've been editing some instructibles The last one I edited was : Easy (no power tools) workspace with storage for large paper I've been following the total number of views of my ibles for some days in 'view profile'. After the last edit, I've lost about five thousand views.  The ibles all show the same number of views.  What happened?

Referrers data

I have what I believe is a bug, followed by a question, and a suggestion (or two). First, the bug: When viewing the stats on any of my Instructables, I see something like the attached picture, where there are blanks for some of the referrers. That can't be right... Either that or I'm getting referrals from the NSA... I'm apparently not the only person with this issue, but I haven't seen an explanation for it. It occurs for me across multiple browsers and operating systems. My question is why don't the number of referrers add up to my total views (e.g. 41+40+15+9+8+1 = 114, not 203)? Is this because the other 89 views are coming from inside Instructables? My first suggestion is that the stats window could use a bit of explanation for people who aren't familiar with what referrals might mean. It would be nice to have mouse-over explanations or something. My other suggestion is that I would love more detailed stats information. It would be really neat to see how people are finding my Instructables internally to the site (e.g. was it a link or a search, and if it was a search, what were the search terms?). it would also be nice to be able to see precise referral links from external referrers. Thanks for making this neat data available. I hope that the solution to this bug is quick and easy!

Sonic data transmission?

This is just an idle thought, but I was reading a couple of ROV builds, and the one thing they all have in common is a tether - it's a fact of the world that very little in the way of radio signal can penetrate water. So... Could you send control signals to an ROV via sound or ultrasound?  Could beeps and clicks carry enough data, far enough, and clearly enough, to control an ROV? Even more fun, how much data could come back? Sensor readings? Images? Just throwing it out there for you to toy with, but it would be fun to have genuinely-remote control for this class of robot.

In the latest release of Instructables, we added information about who is linking to an Instructable. You can see it in the info box under the stats tab. What do you think? Is this useful? As a potential author, would seeing that an Instructable gets traffic from many search engines encourage you to post your project?

Storing Simple Analog Data

Hey guys! I just got this cool little temperature (LM35) and I had a small problem. I want to upload this sketch to my ATtiny45 and put it on my plane so I could get the temperature from above. Only problem is I have no way of seeing it. So is there a simple, easy solution to storing a couple of numbers? I though I could just set the temperature every 3 minutes to a variable, but if I turned the board off, the data would be lost. So I don't need to store tons of memory just a couple numbers! Thanks!

Arduino and publishing data online

Hi. I am preparing to start an Arduino project, simple one for now, that consist in reading temperature data and publishing it on the internet. I did in the past some info search on the topic of sending information to an online server where I could see the data. I had a list of several free sites that provide a simple way thru a url + a key to send information to the database. That was what I did want because that way I didn’t have to build, code an http server and so on. Now comes the part I need some help. I had a problem with my pc and lost most of my information, I know BACKUPS, but I didn’t have bookmark’s stored and lost all of them. Try to google for free online http data providers I just can’t find any. I want to send http code to a server using url + key + data and get that information publish on a site with graphs, etc. Can anyone point some sites that I can do that or other ways to get the same result? Thx for your time and help. Best, Serpa

IDEA: Statistics for "data geeks"

Numbers motivate me. I guess I can call myself a "data geek", as some people like to call it. I remember pretty much the amount of views each one of my Instructables has, but that's not the point. I love all sorts of numbers, and I know I'm not the only one. With the new update, we can now see less numbers, which is a bit disappointing... As I wrote, numbers motivate me. I don't know if this would ever happen, but it would be nice to see what actual "achievements" we have.  For example, it would be nice if something like these, would show up in my YOU page, which I know is being updated right now: Most viewed Instructable: My most viewed Instructable is ranked the 154th most viewed on the site... Followers: I am the 67th most followed member on the site... Total views: I am the 35th most viewed member on the site... Total number of Instructables: I am ranked at number 62 as a member with the most published Instructables in total... Number of contest wins: I've won in __ contests which is the most on the whole website!... It would actually be pretty funny if one of these were actually true...

Year-to-Data, March 2014

Tl;dr: Check out this pie chart that shows the distribution of projects published in 2014 by category. The outer ring shows the channel within the category that had the highest volume of entries, along with the year to date project count. Do you ever wonder how the projects on Instructables are distributed across categories? I did, too. In a tenuous-at-best connection to the Pi Day Pie Contest, we made a pie chart showing where all the newly-published projects have been categorized since the start of 2014. That outside ring shows the most popular channels within the category, along with a project count for each. Some quick observations: (1) There isn’t as much food as I would have thought. It seems like people are posting food ALL THE TIME, but apparently the overall project volume is coming in via other channels. I guess we’re just getting a lot of good food entries that are being featured more often. The quality of authors’ food photography is getting very good, and the featuring team may be featuring projects under the influence of hunger. (2) Contests drive some (but not all) project builds. Since the start of the year, we’ve run paracord, organization, electronics, and crafting contests. And, wouldn’t you know it, those are the channels receiving the bulk of new projects. Even without a special contest, the Toys channel received an outsized number of projects, so we’ll see what happens later this year when we run a few contests around toys. (Pro-tip: Start stockpiling LEGO and KNEX pieces.) (3) Technology and Living make up just over half of the site’s new content. Sure, the robot has a strong preference for electronics projects, but we’re seeing a lot of great craft projects coming in as well. Either way, an army of hot-tool wielding* makers are creating some really cool stuff. (4) This community may be a little paranoid, but we’re prepared. Paracord and survival projects account for almost all of the outdoor projects we’ve seen so far this year. If I’m stuck in a rural farmhouse surrounded by zombies, I want some of you all right there with me. If you’re worried about the imminent collapse of civilization and are concerned that Instructables won't be around to help with the power out, you can buy a book of some of our best homesteading projects. You’ll be sitting pretty with a chicken coop and some rain barrels while everyone else gets punched over a can of soup. (Don't get punched over a can of soup.) (5) Did you notice anything interesting? Sound off in the comments. I've got some 3 month pro memberships to give away to insightful commenters. :D *or hot, tool-wielding authors.

Convert an earthquake graph into datas Answered

I'm currently working on a project which studies the earthquakes and aims to reproduce seismic datas on paper rolls. I'm using home-made electronics (servomotors) and would like to redraw the earthquakes with the most accuracy. For that, I use the heliplots we can find like here: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/monitoring/operations/heliplots_gsn.php However, each time I find a heliplot, it is an image. But in my project, I'm trying to get the datas as inputs as sort to be drawn directly with servomotors and mechanisms. My question is how could I translate the pictures as datas (CSV for examples) or where could I find an earthquake decomposed under a CSV file?

Recover Outlook Express data?

I'm trying to help a friend who's computer got into a state where windows would not boot. Windows repair and a few other tricks didn't work and he didn't have many programs so I just re-installed windows but not before taking a full image of the original drive state. Everything works great now except he says he had a lot of old emails saved that are gone now and his address book is empty. I already reconfigured outlook express to get his mail (standard pop3) and that's working fine but obviously his old stuff was not on the server nor was his address book. Since I have a copy of all his old data logically their should be a way to recover and manually bring his old email and address book into the new installation. However I wasn't able t do a proper export so basically all i have is a copy of the files from the old HDD. What files should I be looking to copy back from the old image and how should i import them so as to not destroy his new mail that's downloaded but still restore his old mail and contacts?

Want to see the information on the magnetic strip in your credit card? Just take some fine rust powder and blow it onto the card to see the magnetic bands that get picked up by card readers. Make a Data Tracking Form in Instructables?

I like to keep track of my data re: all the instructables that I have done, and have all the data viewable in one place....would be interesting to see others, as well, but that may not be a viable function. Privacy issues, etc....Ideally, by clicking on "you", profile, etc., there could be a "statistics form", written in Excel, or such, with all this data and more...Barring this, and it would be a lot of programming work, is there a way you could simply but the total number of views, for all instructables, to date, under "stats" on the "info" sheet that appears next to an instructable that you are viewing? I have included pictures of a form that I put in use to do this very thing. Something similar, perhaps? Thanks. Cman

How to collect data from a machine.

I am an Radio Control racer, so basically I race toy cars according to my wife, and as part of the racing program when ever you get a new engine for your car you have to go through the Break-in process of the engine. If you YouTube rc engine break-in you will see it is a noisy time consuming process and during my last engine break-in even my neighbor got frustrated and asked me to reduce the noise. The engine break-in is a key process because it will determine the life of your engine an it's performance, so I started to look for options on how to do this process in some other alternative way. So I found in the rc community a person that builds a machine that actually executes this process in a very quite and simple way by making the engine run in a bath of hot oil. After months of trying to get this machine I never received an answer from the manufacturer so I decided to built it by myself with common tools and materials and buying the electronics from eBay. After a month of testing and running with some issues, I was able to put my machine together and make it run with no problems, but now I am looking for a way to improve it. What I want to do is to find a way on how to collect the data from the machine, like the rpms of the motor and the temperature of the oil, so I am able to monitor on my mobile phone. So if someone can help me out with leading me on what needs to be done I will really appreciate all the guidance and support. Best regard William Sing

Security concerns over EXIF data

This is a small security concern which I'd only thought about over night and was worried to check. When you upload images, the EXIF tag data contains info from the camera including if your camera is enabled with GPS, a spot on location. This is only worrying if you're going to post something specifically expensive which will remain in location.  Last week I published an instructable for a recipe using expensive rare ingredients - it's not past the wit of man to take the EXIF GPS data from the image and visit that location. Because instructables are a how-to to do it yourself at home, I don't think there's any need to hold this information.  I know the burden could be left with the author to scrub his images but this could be automated within the image upload system when you process 'original' images.  If it's a specific location that is required in an instructable you could just add it to the text.  So my question is, can you look into implementing it and if possible scrubbing the hundreds of thousands of images currently on your servers.  If not, I may need to go through a few of my more recent ones and do a bit of scrubbing myself which may delay things a little and there's always a danger I'll accidently forget one time. Cheers, Tim

USB charging and data transfer problems

I recently got some mobile phones given to repair the USB ports. You might know the problems claimed on faulty USB problems first hand: charging takes forever, device is not always recognised in Windows, data transfers are interrupted or the device disappears suddenly and without any reason from your explorer. Although a lot of devices can suffer from from those symptoms and will work fina after paying money for a new USB port I also discovered a totally different source for the problem. In my case the cables itself. It is obvious that you should try a different USB cable before going through the lengths of replacing a USB port, but: a) not all cables are the same even if they have the same connectors! Some cables contain resistors to regulate the max charging current, others simply have flimsy and hair thin wires inside, prone to breaking. b) not all chargers are the same either! For example Apple chargers provide a voltage on the data lines that in return tells the device how fast it can charge - totally against the USB standards but Apple claims it is fine because they don't use a USB connector on the device side... Why does my device get problems with the USB? Well, to be honest, I don't know as it is not my device ;) Joking aside I will narrow it down to wear and tear. Both the connection on the phone and inside the USB connector can and will wear down over time. With daily charges for power users it is obvious that at some stage one part has to fail. Having a spare, quality replacement cable at hand often helps to find the source of the problem. In my case I had the cables for the phones but also a brand new and with 5$ quite expensive cable to spare. Guess what? None of the supplied cables worked while my new cable performed perfectly with all "broken" phones. After checking the USB ports with good light and a magnifying glass I could see dust, dirt and worn contacts. For 3 of the 5 devices a decent cleaning with methylated spirit and a small brush fixed that issue, the other two will either need a proper new cable or a port replacement. What to do if I have USB problems? 1. Check on a different PC or for the charging use a different charger. 2. Try a different, if possible new cable. 3. Check and clean the USB port. Only if the above won't help at all you should consider that the port itself might be faulty! Is there something to prevent the repair? Yes: don't use your USB port too often ;) This means, you can use a QI charger (wireless) and for the data transfer WiFi, on Android Airdroid is a really good choice. Keep your device clean! This does not mean you are a filthy pig, but more that a phone with an uncovered port tends to collect dust and dirt over time. In your hand bag, pocket or car, it does not matter time will get unwanted stuff in there. If you want to keep your device happy use a cover that also covers the USB port. I checked all the above and think I need a new port - what are my options? If in warranty go the offical way. Out of warranty a repair shop will fix it fast, but not always at reasonable costs, depending on the device and labour involved. Some devices are easy, others require the display to be removed to acces the port electronics. Online tutorials on how to dismantle your device should be available and if you are good with sensitive stuff you can do the repair yourself. Some sellers of replacement ports not only include all the tools you need (watch out for this if you don't already have them) but also videos on how to do it. I hope this little info helps people to avoid high repair costs for no good reason.

What I think I need is something that will allow me to switch between four different data lines simultaneously but default to four other lines. For example: Input 1 has four lines. Input 2 has four lines. There is one output with four lines.Real World Problem:I bought a digital picture frame for super cheap and didn't get a chance to research it. It is powered by a USB wall transformer. When the picture frame is receiving power from the wall, it displays the images. When it's plugged into the computer, it goes into update mode and mounts a drive that you can copy images to.What I Want Now:To be able to flip a switch and have it change from USB wall transformer to USB PC. So, from the above: input 1 = USB wall power, input 2 = PC USB, output = picture frame. The switch box would have a 2x USB Mini-A inputs and one USB Type A output. What I Want Later:I imagine it's trivial(?!) to change the physical switch out for a 555/556 timer and two potentiometers so that I can have set a Frequency and Duration of changing from the default wall power to the PC's USB power. What I Get:A picture frame that every x minutes switches to the PC for y minutes so that I can write an application to look for a newly mounted volume called KODAKFRAME (just an example) and create images for it of things like the latest news and weather or maybe even just change out the pictures for variety. My Real Motives:I'm an IT guy and would love to use this as an auxiliary display for info that isn't critically time sensitive such a free disk space, recently received FTP files, etc. Thanks in advance,3Toe

How to download data into the PICAXE 18m2 ?

How to download date into the PICAXE 18m2 ? im really confused over this. the products i have :  picaxe 18m2, uln2803a( not sure if this is necessary), chi030 project board, AXE027 cable, and 3 AA batter power supply. i basically have the demo kit. i was wondering if you could use this kit to download the date from the PICAXE programming editor to the picaxe18m2 or do you have to build a separate download circuit to accomplish this ? if someone can clear my confusion. im also confused about the USB Download Circuit and Serial Download Circuit and their difference. if someone can make a small guide using pictures or video  and maybe even do the demo led test off the picaxe manual, (http://www.picaxe.com/docs/picaxe_manual1.pdf) i would greatly appreciate it. thank you
