Rotary dial phone

Hi all, Yesterday, my grandma gave me an old telephone. My mother used it as a toy, so my grandfather disconnected the wires (for safety). I wanted to connect the phone, but I don't know which connections I need. I attached some photo's to make the situation clear. It would be great if you could help me! Arnout P.S.: English is not my mother tongue so it would be fantastic if you didn't use a vocabulary that's too difficult ;)

Home Dial-In Server

I'm trying to set up a home dial-in server. I'd like it to have these features: -Runs from DOS -Can answer on the fourth ring -If no one is home, can redirect the call to the answering machine if it does not detect a computer on the other end (I.E. redirect if it doesn't hear computer tones) That last note is especially important. I've looked at the getty series, but it seems that it's only for Linux. Is there a way to do it with Kermit, C-Kermit, or any other of the Kermit programs? Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

use a landline telephone, speakers, a mic, and a computer to go online with dial-up

Would it be possible to use a landline telephone, a computer with speakers and a microphone, and a software program to connect to the internet with dial-up? there are multiple free dial-up numbers available, so if I called with the phone, and used the computer to emulate an analog modem and listen to the response with the microphone, would I be able to get online? if so, does anything like this already exist?

I can't get Xbox Live with my dial-up. I tried the steps that instructables gave and I still can't get it.

I have the ethernet cable hooked to my pc, and went to my networks and did the wizard just like instructables said to do but it keeps telling me something is wrong with my IP address. It says my IP address must belong to two or more other devices. I don't know what to do. Thanks for any help.

Dial-up internet server

Hi everyone, I am trying to connect my Sega Dreamcast to the internet with it's 56k modem, without using telephone lines. From what I understand, I need to connect my my Dreamcast to a tone generator, then to a USB modem plugged into a laptop with which to forward the connection over wifi. My question is: Is this is a plausible solution, and if so, could I simplify and shrink this set up. Ideally I would like to figure out if I could build a tone generator instead of buying one and how can I replace the laptop with something like a raspberry pi. I think that once I figured out how to forward the connection on my laptop, it would be fairly straightforward to do the same with a raspberry pi. I would prefer a relatively compact solution if possible. Thanks in advance for any help or thoughts.

Turn dial to generate pulses

Here is my proposal. I'm building a pan/tilt unit. I plan to have a 200 step motor attached to a 20:1 worm gear, (the latter is needed so it will 'lock' in place, and not be solely reliant on the motor's holding torque.. So in order for the output shaft to turn 180 degrees needs the worm gear to turn 10 times. In turn the motor must do 10 revs, which would need 2000 pulse steps. It's the pulse generation that's proving difficult. Whilst a 555 timer could generate pulses, I want it to be 'mechanical' For example, if I turn the knob 90 degrees, I want to create 1000 pulses, (45 degrees creates 500 pulses) and so on, so the knob matches the physical position of the camera. If I turn the knob 180 degrees in 1 second ... the motor will turn 180 degrees in 1 sec. If I turn the knob slowly, pulses will be generated slowly, and the camera/motor will turn slowly. My idea at present is some sort of optical encoder ... but that would need 4000 divisions on the wheel!! Or - a 1024ppr wheel with a 1:4 step up gearing ... but such encoders are several hunderd Pounds!! And I would need two of them!! I have software that will allow me to print an encoder wheel, but resolution will have to be 'course' since it will use an LED / transistor, so I suspect around 64 divs. I purchased a RC servo, wondering if I could remove the motor, and turn the output shaft by hand. Couldn't be done. I've also considered 'planatary gears' in reverse to 'step up' the revs ... but I cannot locate any 'hobbyist' versions other than the Tamayia type. Also briefly looked at RC servos, but having done the maths, it would be impractical to get the output to move (say) 0.1 degrees as the motor would only move about 1/4 of a rev and have no torque!! (One option may be to make it continuos rev, and place a feedback pot externally.but again, moving 0.1 degree around a pot would create minimal feedback) Incidentally, 0.1 degrees is the stepper resolution 180 degrees / 2000 steps Anyone any ideas? Bearing in mind that the speed of the pulse train is dependant on how fast the control (pot) is turned, and also matches physical camera position. Encoders are preferred option as it's then possible to electronically guage which way the motor is turning. If electronic, here is (sort of) what the circuit would need to compute. (Sample and hold?) Moved from 0 to 45 degrees in one second. That degree of movement needs 500 pulses, thus need to generate a pulse width to get 500 pulses in 1 second timescale. ** This is just to give an example. The actual sampling rate would be much faster. If it was a 'slow' 1/10th second, in the above example it would check every 4.5 degrees, and generate 50 pulses in that time scale.

PCB Help: Need to make new dial or short out for coffee grinder

I just followed a great post to hack my Delonghi Coffee Grinder here: http://ping-pong-balls.blogspot.ca/2012/03/so-youve-bought-delonghi-kg89-how-to.html However in the process I shamefully snapped off one of the knobs and part of the circuit board attached to it snapped. I'm wondering if there's a more or less easy way to fix this, such as a short circuit around the timer, or perhaps even create a new makeshift dial. I'm a PCB novice, so any tips or re-directions would be great. Thanks!

How to remove watch face/dial?

I have been trying to clean the crystal/glass and a minute hand of a watch. I do not have a tool for removing a watch crystal/glass so I thought I would try removing the movement and face from the back. I managed to remove the movement but the face/dial seems to be extremely firmly built into the case, see photo, and I cannot seem to remove it from the back. It is a chronograph and the two chrono buttons do not screw out like the crown does, which stop the metal face/dial coming out too, but regardless the face/dial seems to be extremely firmly pressure fitted so I cannot see a way of removing it without bending or breaking it. Is the only option to remove the crystal/glass itself to clean it up? If so, I don't have a special tool for removing it, has anyone removed a crystal like this with a knife or other tools? It is a plastic/acrylic domed type crystal/glass.Thanks.

What To Do With A Really Old Laptop?

So I inherited this Toshiba laptop with Windows 95 on it. It has a ?86 processor and about 16MB RAM and about 800 MB hard drive. It has a laptop PC card that supplies dial-up access and a floppy drive. It runs on AC power.(Edit: It has 8 Megabytes of RAM and a 750 Megabyte hard drive. More tiny than I thought.)What are some good ideas to do with this? I am thinking about installing some kind of Linux on it, you know, to beef it up somehow, make every megabyte count. I'm especially interested in the dial-up card, specifically whether I can hack it to access wireless signals... My brain wheels move, but no work gets done! Aggghh!

3D printed combination lock anyone?

I am in the finnishing stages for a fully 3D printed dial combination lock, similar to what would be used on a safe.Unlike what you might find in other places there is no metal parts. No crappy amount of possible combinations either, 72 per dial dial...I took me a few weeks and quite some filament to get from a draft in Sketchup to something that actually works as planned. As it was more a training excersize in Sketchup for me I had the the following goals:1. Everything is 3D printed with as little afterwork as possible.2. All required springs are 3D printed as well as all other moving or stationary parts.3. Where otherwise fasteners or screws would be required only short leftovers of filament are used to keep the parts in place.Only exception for security reason is the mounts for the front dial and holder. These should be glued or screwed in place if the actual intention is to use it as a working lock.4. The lock shall not be pickable by means of felling, hearing or just trying out random combinations. The above points I got sorted to my satisfaction. However I would like some feedback from trustworth beta testers on the general design and functionality. It is one thing to design something that just works but a bit harder to design it the best possible way.Another big drawback currently is that it seems to be impossible to export proper STL files in Sketchup once they reach a certain complexity.Automatic services or programs to fix these issues result in drastically increased file sizes. Some of the problematic part go from just under 200kb to over 10mb after "fixed".This is not acceptable for me and I have to work on fixing this issue. Most slicers correct these tiny errors automatically and produce a correct print but I prefer proper STL files of small size and complexity over inflated ones that I then need to double check for a long anyways.A few details need changing as my tests showed that you can't drive up print details to a certain level without risking to be unable to mount the parts without further sanding.I hope to have a full set of clean STL files ready for testing by the end of this month. If you are interested to try it out and maybe contribute to an improved version your time will be valued by being mentioned as a beta tester for the upcoming Instructable.Be warned though! This is not for the faint of heart and certainly not for someone who does not know how to calibrate all aspects of the 3D printer involved. The lock also uses quite a bit of filament, currently around 37m all up but I am working on reducing this by replacing solid parts with framework instead where possible. The assembly can be time consuming and frustrating if you realise only once finnished that you have certain parts in the wrong position or orientation. But as said, my goals were not really on making it as easy as possible LOLWhy desing a lock that is neither secure enough nor free of metal parts if there is other options ;)If you happen to work with an Inventor and PLA on the left side then I can provide ready to go .gx files if prefered. They would then be already confirmed to be working and usable on one of my printers.Let me know what you think ...

Is it possible to modify this watt dial to work with less current? Answered

I've got a few of these watt dials that I would love to use in a project, however, they will not be reading wattages and will rather be controlled with Arduino. Right now they are set up to read up to 3750 w at 125v, which is much more power than I can source with an Arduino or would be achievable with this project.  The way it is set up is that current goes through the magnetic coil and creates a magnetic field perpendicular, attracting a small magnetic block (slightly visible in the photo). Would simply rewrapping the coil with thinner magnet wire in more coils work?

I am thinking perhaps to link it to a thermometer to control its intensity when it reaches some temperature thresholds and depending on the time of the day (preferably a schedule). What kind of mechanism is used in a date dial on a watch? It stores tension, moves a disc a set amount - not gradually.

I've looked high and low, but can't find a description of the date dial mechanism.  Unlike hte hour hand or the moon dial, it doesn't move gradually - it moves a set rotation percentage,  all at once, so exactly one number is displayed at any given time, and at midnight, it switches over.  Does this make sense?  Does anyone know about this mechanism?  What are the components? I'm trying to create an analog random story generator, using the same principal as the date dial on a watch.  Instead of numbers, the discs will have pieces of a narrative written on them.  Each one will rotate at a different rate, and each disc will be divided into sections with once sentence each.   The intention is to hide all but one sentence behind a board, with a window cut out to display the one.  A drawing would make more sense.
