Digital photo frame

I want to make a digital photo frame with the ability to dictate the length of time each photo is shown and the ability to type words describing the photo that can be triggered by use of a touchscreen.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Old Laptop----> Digital Photo Frame

This is an idea for a craft project: I'd like to have a digital photo frame, but I just can't bring myself to pay $200 for one. Now, I've got an old laptop sitting around the house that is slower than frozen mollasses, but has a nice big LCD screen goin' for it. It could definitely handle a photo slideshow. It's just a question of changing the laptop physically so it will hang on the wall and look nice-- remove all the unecessary stuff and strap what you still need to the back of the LCD and voila! I've had this idea for a while now, but there's no way in heck I have enough technical expertise to pull it off. So, I'm puttin' it out there to all you people who are smarter than me. One of yall is bound to be smart enough to pull it off. And then the rest of us will follow in your footsteps-- stand on your shoulders as it were-- and turn our old, crappy, laptops into nifty new peices of gadgety wall art.

Storing Digital photos?

What is the best way to store digital pictures? The dates are usually automatically downloaded in a date folder using Windows Live Photo Gallery. I would like to be able to access them easily however they are taking up room on my laptop. I've considered CD/DVDs or uploading Shutterfly, Flickr, etc however not really a permanent solution.

Is there a way to connect a digital picture frame to a computer in order to display information? Answered

I've seen little monitors that can display weather RSS and other random info, and i just thought using a digital picture frame would be a good substitute instead of an expensive little screen.  I'm just stuck on how I would connect the frame to the computer.  any ideas welcome lol

Making a digital picture frame without a working motherboard :-(

So...my iBook G4 died a couple of months ago. At first, We Fix Macs thought it was a (known) logic board problem, but it turns out the motherboard is dead. I've recovered my hard drive, and have the carcass at home. Everything works fine except that it won't boot, or won't stay running once booted. Is there a reasonably inexpensive way to hook up an image player (like an MP3 or other thumb-drive type of thing) directly to an LCD display? Most of the digital photo-frame projects involve restructuring the components of a functioning laptop.I'm not about to try to get this done in time for Christmas, but for my wife's birthday (March) it'd be kind of cool.

building a picture frame?

Have an older Toshiba 2595 lap top (don't even remember how I acquired it, blame that one on the “Old Timers Disease” that I have). I am going to build a Digital Picture Frame from it. When I acquired it there was no battery or power supply with it. While doing some repair work on a similar computer for a friend, I did power it up with his battery and installed Windows 98 SE on the hard drive, so I know the unit works. The HD is only a 6 Gig, but is big enough to hold a couple of hundred pictures and the software program “Slideshow” to rotate them. What I need to know is, will this work on the power supply only. Do I need to do anything with the battery connections? There are 10 pins where the battery went into the computer and I don’t have any idea of which ones did what. Does anyone know what rating of power supply is required for this unit. Could I use a generic power supply instead of having to purchase the exact one for this unit? Of course you know there will be another upcoming “instructable” of how to build a Digital Picture Frame. I will try and make mine a bit more entertaining and perhaps include some new idea about how to do this type of thing.   Thanks Larystoy

Any ideas on how to make this giant photo frame?

Hi! I'm slightly obsessed with this giant photo frame (see attached). I'm pretty sure it's just a concept / one-off, and it's not something I'd be able to afford anyways, so I'm considering how to DIY it. I've got some good ideas for the outer frame rim, but I can't come up with a way to make the huge back plate and matt that would look nice and not be too heavy. For the backplate I could probably use posterboard or 3mm MDF, but I'm not sure of how to join two or more sheets together that won't significantly add to the weight. At this size there will also be some serious stability issues - it'll need some sort of cross bracing. For the matt, I think I could maybe just use nice cardboard and cut the picture holes by hand, carefully lining up adjacent sheets. Proper matt material I think would be way too expensive for something that size. Any ideas? Thanks Alex

Creative framing / mounting photos

So I have some photos that I would like to print out and mount similar to the way they are in the attached image. Any ideas or advice on how best to do so? I'd like them to be on solid blocks of wood, and kind of like, sealed in and to the wood. Very sturdily mounted, almost like wheat-pasted. The only thing I've thought of so far was using casting resin, but I'm afraid it would eat thru the ink and paper... Also, any other ideas for mounting and hanging photos that are beyond actual 'frames'?

A PC-less 12"-15" digital picture frame? Anyone?

After reading DOZENS of DIY's explaining how to use an old laptop as a digital picture frame, I'm hoping someone here can provide a solution.I have an old 14" LCD computer monitor that I would just LOVE to turn into a low-cost digital picture frame. But I DON'T have a spare PC, nor do I want to bother with "booting into Windows/Linux/etc" just to use it. If that were the case, I'd just build a PC out of spare parts for $20. I'm looking for an easier (and less bulky) solution.I've seen DIY projects that turn small handheld media players into tiny digital picture frames, but the screen is typically no bigger than 1.5-to-3.5 inches. I can buy a *working* 3.5" DPF for the same price... not that I'd want one... with far less hassle. I'm looking to use the screen I've already got (spare it from ending up in a landfill), not buy something I don't want nor need.Maybe there's a way to connect one of these tiny media players to a bigger screen? Or maybe there's another way to display photos using something other than a PC that I'm unaware of?With all the old LCD monitors going into the trash, it seems a simple "box" that can plug into any old monitor to display photos, might be a very desirable device.Anyone?PS: I'm a "computer tech" of nearly three decades, so I already know the "complexity" of what I'm asking. Thanks.

Convert old LCD monitor to digital photo frame

I have a Dell 15" LCD monitor I'm not using anymore. I'm thinking maybe I could make a nice wall mountable picture frame. I have a Digital Decor Photo Viewer with HD component YPbPr & standard composite video outputs. The LCD only has VGA. Is this doable? I'd like to make a nice wood housing to put the screen in and to conceal the photo viewer, like an all-in-one unit. Is there a way to get the video from viewer to LCD that won't break the bank? Thanks.

What can I do with this digital picture frame? Answered

I have a digital picture frame keychain thing that was given to me a while back, and while it was in the original packaging(basically just a tiny box) it didnt come with a driver cd, and it doesnt seem to actually have a brand, therefor I cant find drivers anywhere for it. I've even let windows check online for a driver, but to no avail. so basically, as a picture frame, its useless. So I'm looking for something cool to do to it. I have included 4 pictures of it, and can upload photos of the circuits and such if needed. Thanks!!!!

recording photo frame mod to mini amp/speakers

I bought a little recording photo frame at Walmart tonight for $2.88. Sadly someone had been testing it and the batteries are dead, so I can't check the volume til I can get new ones. What I'm wondering is whether anyone had altered one of these or something similar to make it mini amp w/speaker. I'm wanting to install something like this in some small stringed instruments(dulcimers) I'm making that don;t have much volume on their own. I've looked at all the altoid ideas and mini amps and mini speakers, but didn't see anything that would do what I need. Most were just for ipods. I did see one that used a spy ear and that's what gave me the idea for this. I have one of the cheap little clear plastic spy ears somewhere, but couldn't find it tonight I would be ok for picking up the sound, but I don;t think mounting the earphones on the instrument would give enough sound. The soundbox on my larger. dulcimers did ampllfy some earphones I got at Dollar Tree, but not much. I would add pics of the circuit board of this recorder, but my camera is dead. I would really appreciate any help with this. I need to keep the cost down as much as possible in order to keep the dulcimers affordable. The ones I am making are more a novelty item, so I can't price them too high.

Broadway Photo... scammers?

Well ive had my eye on the Canon Eos Digital Rebel xTi for quite some time now.I found bwayphoto.com and was amazed at their price (body + two lenses = $597)!here's the link: Canon Eos Digital Rebel xTi on bwayphoto.comI've been doing research on both the camera and the website. The camera i am happy with. I love canon cameras, especially their easy-to-use UI, and the reviews are wonderful. It's the site that I am worried about... I have read reviews on it and there are so many bad reviews on it! I bought my camcorder from the site a couple years ago, but my mom did it for me so I don't really know whether she had any problems or not (she doesn't remember either).Actually, she might have fallen for their scams because she bought me an extra battery along with it... anyway... Before i make any decisions, I'm curious if any of you trusty Instructablers have ever used the site (or any of the sites affiliated with the company) and whether or not you are happy with it. There isn't a better price i can find online or in stores, so I'm having a hard time deciding whether or not i should just go for it and have my mom negotiate with them and whatnot...So should I stick with bwayphoto.com and try them out for this, or should i spend more money on the same camera (minus one lense) at a more reliable source?

Digital Picture Frames & Laptop Screens Question

Hello everyone, I'm new here. I have a question for the more experienced techies here. I have an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop. Now the motherboard is toast, due to a cup of coffee indecent over the laptop. Anyways, I see many instuctables here on converting old laptops into awesome picture frames. So I figured I might as well do something with the screen and whatever parts I have salvaged. I noticed almost every project requires a motherboard. Is there a way to possibly avoid that all together?.. Basically, couldn't I just buy a cheap 7" lcd digital picture frame for $40 that would include a remote, an sd card input and or usb input and some how rewire my 15.4" widescreen lcd monitor from the laptop to work with the brains of the picture frame. Could this be done? Any idea on the wiring needed to be done, or if you might have diagrams that can help me.  Any help on this would be greatly appreciated to be honest. Thanks in advance. -Alex

Main photo being cropped on 'explore' pages.

The main photo of an Instructable is being cropped by a few percent at the edges on the 'explore' pages.  The images are fine when the Instructable is clicked to view it, but for myself and others who take photos to fill the whole frame it is annoying to have the edges of the 'content' chopped off.  (I always intend to take a more loosely framed photo as the title image but never seem to remember.) Is this a bug in the image handling or is it done by intent? Edit : I've just realised what's happening - It's cropping to make a square aspect ratio for the thumbnails. Looks like I'll have to compose the photo accordingly.

Digital Conversion of Folding Camera?

Ever since i saw the 'ible on converting a land camera to take 35 mm film, I figured there had to be a way to take this even further. I'm even thinking the first baby step shouldn't be too hard- simply mounting a digital camera to the frame. Now, it would be a little more complex than this- taking the lcd screen off of the base, and putting it on the back of the camera, mounting the actual machinery of the camera where the original lens was, and perhaps even mounting buttons (or on some digital cameras, the wheels for 'scene selection' on the base of the land camera. The only problem I can find with this simple conversion is the fact that it seems most digital cameras use micro ribbons now, which would be (as far as I can tell) incredibly hard to splice and extend (which would be necessary to get the lcd screen, and other components mounted on the frame of the land camera). Does anyone have any ideas for this, or are is my goal too lofty? THanks.

Large Scale Plexiglas Photo Display

Hundreds of picture frames in a family room is overwhelming and cluttered.  Instead of having an individual picture frame for each photograph you want to show off, display all of your pictures on your wall with this plexiglas photo display found on anh-minh.  You could have a few smaller versions of this in one room.  Keep it tasteful by being conscious about where you place the displays and be sure to not clutter your walls!
