Cordless drill? Answered

Looking at cordless drill I noticed one which stated on it that it produced 32Nm of torque at 2000RPM. This seems a lot are they being optimistic. None of my drills have it marked on them.

Drill jig

I'm doing a project where in I am casting hard plastic (not sure what kind) and then need to drill into it at fairly precise angles. The pieces are more or less flat, about 3/8" thick, and I need to drill 1/4" holes in them lengthwise to insert some 1/4" acrylic shafts. I would ideally do this with a drill press but the pieces are kind of long, I do not think they would fit under the press. I have made a test hole by clamping a piece to a table and using a power drill held parallel to the table, but I wasn't able to be quite as accurate as I'd like. Anyone have any good ideas on this? I'm thinking a kind of horizontal jig, but I don't see very well how to make it.

PCB Drilling?

I have heard that tugsten carbide pcb drill bits are too fragile and will break if used with a hand drill. I dont want to buy a drill press due to the cost (unless i can find a small and cheap one)... so will a 1/16 drill bit be ok for pcb holes for standard through hole components? because that is the smallest drill bit size i have that successfully works with my hand drill... any personal experience, knowledge or advice to help me? and thanks

Drilling Help

I am making a movie prop (and writing an instructable along with it) and it requires switches being mounted in pvc pipe. now i have a rectangle shaped rocker switches I'm trying to use, however, if you have noticed drill bits tend to work best when they are round. and i need some way to make this .5" wide hole (the biggest drill bit i have) to a 1" by 1.2" rectangular hole. so if anyone would have a suggestion or solution i would gladly add some credit to them in my instructable. thanks please reply!

Deep Hole drilling

This might sound stupid, but I've been wondering, is it possible to use a gun drill on a drill press? Does a drill press accept gun drills? If not, is it possible to modify the drill press so that it accepts gun drills? How? I've used normal drill bits to make "deep"(about 4 inches) holes in metal before, but it was very, very difficult to get it straight, and the metal became hot as heck after a while, sometimes the drill bit even got stuck in the metal and it was extremely difficult to get it out. Inverted Drill Press?

Left handed drills? Answered

I recently came across a youtube vid showing removal of a broken bolt with a left handed drill bit. Other than the removal of stubborn bolts and studs  why do they make left handed drill bits? Both my rather old mains drills and the pillar drill all turn clockwise for right handed drill bits. Only the cordless drill has a reverse function.

Torque loss in Drill

Hi, I am having some trouble with torque loss from a drill motor and gearbox I harvested for a project. I followed the steps in this instructable (https://www.instructables.com/id/Hacking-Drills-CheapPowerful-GearboxMotors-for-/) to get the motor and gearbox. I then hooked it up to a motorshield and an arduino. Originally the drill (Rigid 18v Cordless) States that it can deliver close to 500 lb-in of torque. However when I hook it up to my apparatus I am able to stop the spinning with my hand.  I use PWM to control the speed but upping the speed still does not produce the required torque. If anyone has any ideas as to why it dropped in torque I would be very appreciative. Thank you in advanced.

Old Makita Drill

I have an old cordless Makita drill the water guy left at our house 15 years ago, I found in my shed with the charger :-). The battery is pretty much completely dead, and I don't want to buy a new $40 one or zap it with a welder. How can I turn it into a Corded drill or use a different battery with it? It is the kind that stores the battery in the handle. 9.6V Battery.

Reducing current to drill

Hey everyone. I'm building a potters wheel for my girlfriend for Christmas, and for the motor I'm using a corded drill. I want to use something like a sewing pedal to control the speed, rather than the trigger of the drill. I've looked it up (on here) and it sounds easy enough, but the problem is that most corded drills are 4 amps and over, and the highest amperage I've found on a sewing pedal is 1.5A, I'm assuming this would blow up the pedal. Is there some way I could use a resistor to reduce the current drawn by the drill? Would the drill still operate on 1/3 the current? It won't need even close to full power. Where would this resistor go? Thanks in advance.

Roybi drill repair

   I have a  roybi drill  hp1802m drill i used it last year and have been gone for 1 year .  [working good when i left]  Now that i am back it won't work.  I have checked it out and found that it is the switch.  is there any repair to a switch??   all the battarys are good and all the rest of the roybi tools still work good.

Drill battery Switch

Hello! i got a car horn with an motor, the motor is rated 12 Volts so i got a 12 volt drill battery since im not going to install it on a car. However, i got a problem... My plan is to mount 2 switches, a Keyswitch and a push buttom switch. so i bough that .. However it made me think if the small switches can take the Power of the drill batt. I have no idea how many AMps a drill batt got, and the key switch is rated 0,5A / 250 VAC and i the push/switch one is a standart like this https://elextra.dk/images/large/8011.jpg .. Now do you think i need a other switch or will i smelt them by pluggin the Drill batt on ?

"Sonic" drilling or cutting

If we look up sonic drills today we usually get some fancy machines driving pipes in the ground, preferably softer ground.But the term includes all types of machines that use sonic vibrations to advance through a media.With the ancient and claimed to have never existed technologies in mind I did some digging...In the food industry vibrating knifes are quite common, same for "air knifes" on softer food.Even in the meat industry they find more and more uses now.Ultrasonic cutting or welding is the same thing and included in "sonic".Same for some experimental sub sonic drilling methods currently being tested.The general idea might be as old as using vibrating equippment to compact stuff, like concrete, bricks and so on.What you can compact by vibration you can also make "fluid" by vibration.Industrial feeder systems utilise this to the extreme by even making light and fine particles like flour move like water without causing any dusting.What all the techniques have in common that a suitable tool or tool head is used and that it is attempted to use the most suitable vibration frequency for the job.Anyone operating an ultrasonic welder knows the pain of finetuning for a new electrode or just new part to be welded.What does that tell us now that makes the understanding easier?Take a bottle of ketchup, preferably one that is still quite full.Turn it upside down and noothing comes out.Shake it a bit and you are either lucky or drowned in red.But hold it at an angle and start tapping it and the red sauce flows out easily.What it true for most newtonian fluids is in some way also true for non-newtonian fluids.Ever mixed corn starch and water to make these funny experiments with it?Hit it hard and it reacts really hard and is not sticky at all.Leave your hand resting on it and in sinks in and sticks to it.Stirring it very slowly is easy, go faster and you get stuck.You can do similar things with by using an external source for vibrations.For example a vibration speaker mounted to a smal cup of the goo.If you place sand on a sloped piece of plastic or sheet metal then at a low angle it will pile up easy and stay.Start vibrating the plate and the sand will start to flow off.Works fine with a vibration source mounted to a piece of steel bar or rod and a bucket of sand too.Trying to press it into the sand requires a lot of force, especially once you are a bit deeper.Let it vibrate properly and it slides rights down.If we can do the simple stuff as well as really complicated stuff in the industry then what about other materials?So far we use vibrations to make things move out of the way, compact things, transport them or to heat them up for welding plus some cutting applications.Considering the variety one might wonder why no one tries it for "difficult" materials.Machined surface can be found throughout ancient history.Finding "machined things" were vibrations was clearly used is a bit harder.The great walls are not a perfect example here as the views differ quite a bit on how they could have been created.But if we leave things melting them or a secret concret like recipe for creating for example granite then vibrations start to make some sense.You find some interesting videos on youtube where people use speakers, wires and rocks to confirm you can actually "machine" them by vibrations.Especially granite has some quite musical properties, big boulders as well as smaller ones produce destinct sounds when you hit them hard.Tests and measurements were made on granite and other hard rocks to check how fast sound travels in them , how it is refeclted and where the sound comes out or affects the surface the most.Lets just say every sample gave different results.Shape, density and dimensions affect not just the resonant frequency but also where and how the sound travels in the rock.What if??We can use a simple speaker, a plate and some rice to see how patterns form under various frequencies.Works with sand or other granules as well.The interesting patterns are the so called harmoncis.Here we see clear and destinct patters, sometimes with extremely fine lines and areas of softly vibrating granules.Some people say these harmonic frequencies have all special meanings and uses.We mainly used them to avoid problems.Imagine your new TV would not have a housing tested to be stable with all frequencies the speakers can produce.All of a sudden your back of the TV might start to rattle ;)Same for car engines.Harmonic vibrations are eliminated wherever possible.Otherwise they could multiply and affect other things in the engine or around it.Simply put it means we have various options to detect and measure vibrations on a surface or in a system.Back in the day every half decent backup generator had a mechanical indicator for the frequency of the supplied electricity.A set of tiny forks with the desired on painted red and several on either side of it.These forks were designed to get into harmonic and therfor quite intense vibrations at their set frequency.If the one for 50Hz looked blurry then all was good ;)The same principle god be applied on a big boulder of granite.Place the "vibration meter" at the desired spot and start moving around the vibration source on the surface until you find a spot that causes maximum response on the meter.Best thing here is that if you then place that surface area onto another peice of fixed in place granite both pieces will start to loose substance if vibrations are applied.The fine sediment forming is then usable as an indicator where to move the vibration source to continue once the effect literally wears off.Is it feasable?Well, if we trust mainstream science then the answer is no.A huge amount of vibration energy would be required for such a hard material, despite ancient proof that says otherwise.Semi industrial test also seemed to confirm the theory as only with very high amplitudes (loudness) and while automatically adjusting for the resonant frequency changes a measurable amount of material was removed.I struggle a bit with that as for the testing tool heads made from hardened steel or carbide were used.And that with little or no regards on how the head and tool itself affects the output.I mean in terms of having the max possible movement happening right t the tool contact surface!There is a huge difference between applying a vibration to a tool and using a system, tool and tool head DESIGNED to work at the desired frequency!Otherwise we wouldn't need a computer to design and test a horn for welding purposes or shade a knife spefically so that the vibration go along the right axis and in the right direction.You not break a hard thing with a very soft thing unless it travels fast enough to become harder as the target!This complicated explanation basically just confirms that if you hit water at a too high speed then it will just break you into pieces instead of offering a soft splashPlease do not jump of bridges or such to confirm this yourself!!If that is really true and science says it is, then how about the other way around?Works fine too, or we wouldn't have pressure washers or water cutters.Now for the part where I hope some really smart people leave helpful comments:If we can cut steel with just a stream of water, then I ask:Isn't for example copper much harder than water?Steel is much harder than copper but water cuts through it.The answer here it simple or complicated, depending on how you want to expain how it works.Comes down to speed and pressure plus the right nozzle shape to prevent a beam expansion.But then water is indeed "harder than steel".Questions:Lets say we would use a copper pipe that in lenght, thickness, hardness and diameter is optimised to transmit a frequency so the pipe end sees the max vibration like a feed horn for ultrasonic welding.Not to hard to calculate these days :)Now imagine said "main frequency" would be optimised for the pipe but also be a harmonic frequency of the rock to be worked on.The pipe end would deform quickly, abrasion does the rest and it fails before even making a decent sratch that is not copper metal on granite.No matter how hard we press nothing good enough will ever happen.BUT: If we would add more hormainc frequencies to feed our pipe we can multiply the amplitude quite easy!Just try with a sound generator from your app store, needs 2 or more channels to be usable.Pick for example 400hZ on one and 800Hz on another, then finetune around these number to hear how the tone changes ;)My theory goes like this:If all "working frequencies" would just harmonics of the resonant frequency of the granite, then they can be tuned so the effect on the pipe end is minimised.The overlaying frequencies however should result in the same effect a water cutter has: The pipe becomes ultra hard.The better the match and the more you have to get it right the harder the pipe will be.Adding now a "drilling frequency" or multiple could be used to drive these harmonics slightly out of phase.Like with the sound generator on your phone we end up with a pulsating sound, or vibration.While the pipe still vibrates at the same "hardening" mix the drilling frequency creates a peak like a jackhammer.Try it by using the heaphone output on a small speaker and placing some light and tiny things into the cone.The will violently jump around during these pulsing tones.For a drilling system the output can be mechanically maximised by utilising a pitchfork design.A head holds the vibration speakers and the tynes are tuned good enough to the frequency of the speakers.Always two would have to operate in sync though as otherwise the pitchfork movement that transfers the sound down the center bar won't work.This head could then be desgined to act as a holder for a quick change of work out pipes that are no longer long enough for tuning.I guesstimate that a well tuned design would result in a copper pipe being able to drill at least 10 to 15cm into solid granite before it wears off too much.And we are talking here about just a few mm to get the thing out of tune!But would dare to desing such a thing just to confirm a theory that no one ever really dared to test? ;)And if friction welding works as good as ultrasonic welding, then what would happen if we try this with the right frequencies and vibrations instead of wasting tons of energy?

Cordless electric drill motor.? Answered

I have been experimenting with an old motor from a cordless drill no markings on it - Any one have any power information for these motors - they seem to produce a LOT of torque for such a small motor.? I find I can lift 4 Kg fairly easily - I guess I could do it the old way and measure and calculate HP.

Why has nobody just dug down? Answered

I know we have really deep oil wells and geothermal things, but why have we not even attempted seeing how low we really can go.  In this day and age automation is easy and affordable, yet we haven't designed some simple machine to drill down to extreme temperatures and pressure to see what is really happening inside our earth. I propose a machine, similar to one of these http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunnel_boring_machine and we set it up to build a tunnel at a 45 degree angle and to place concrete pieces around just like it normally would, except on its own.  Water would be used to remove the material and if that became too difficult due to high pressure then.  A station would be built to boost pressure every so often.   Who doesn't think it would be awesome to walk around at the same depth as an oil well normally is, or deeper.  Because this drill is self contained it would have endless possibilities, at least until it melted or needed a cutting head repair.

How to make a homemade drill press?

I dont have a drill press at home because it cost too much for me but it is really easy to drill on anything if you have this kind of power tool. I have a portable hand drill and I am thinking of fabricating a holder for this as if I am using a drill press. Multiple drills sharing a single power source

Would it be possible to run multiple cordless drills off the same power source? I do not want to run the drills all at once, but rather have them share the power source. I was thinking of modifying an ac adapter with a voltage and amperage less than the tolerances of the drill. Are there any safety concerns? If I do this will I blow myself up? Could I run them at a higher voltage/amperage? Is this idea dangerous and stupid or just stupid?

Using a mounted drill to power axle mounted device

Hi, I have just constructed a chicken plucker as in the photo. As an initial attempt the device worked really well - except for the connection of the drill to the axle. This was not well aligned so it ate the threaded bar which was trying to pull itself out and not helped with the thread direction. Are there examples of how to better power such a device?  I would like to be able to re-use my drill, I suspect properly aligned would work better. I could also swap to a non threaded bar but would need suggestions on how to keep the plucker barrel in place. Cheers

Why Cordless Drill (Bosch 7,2volt) do not work using Laptop Adapter

Hello all.. I got problem with my cordless drill. It's battery is leak and i need to replace it using Laptop Adapter power suply. I have HP laptop adapter with Voltage Output 18,5Volt 3.8Amp. I just connected the + and - of laptop adapter to the cordless drill, BUT it do not want to turn and ONLY MOVE SEQUENCE (move-stop-move-stop-move-stop....). Its move is so strange for me, it's like pulse voltage because the drill just move for a moment then its stop, then its move and stop and always like that... I don't know is it DC or AC, and I've try to make circuit to make its voltage become DC using 4 diode and capasitor, But the result is same (move-stop-move-stop...). Then, I try to connecting the cable adapter to the drill and then pull off and connecting again with rapid sequence. Then the drill want to turn fastly... Please Help me, how to solve this, i need this adapter work for my cordless drill.... I've make a test to, I used AC dinamo (not DC dinamo motor) and connect it with the Laptop adapter, it's turn normally and fast... Please anyone here help me...

24V Panasonic rotary hammer drill - battery and wires got hot (drill didn't) and drill stopped working. Answered

I have a 24V Panasonic rotary hammer drill, model EY6813. It came with two 3.0 amp-hr NiMh batteries, both of which had a problem with one of the contacts almost welding itself to the contact in the drill, and also in the charger. I stopped using those batteries. Now, using an external 7.0 amp-hr NiCd, it's worked fine until recently. The drill began to intermittently shut-off, then quit working altogether. I then noticed that the battery, the wire running to the drill, and the contacts in the drill were hot (battery was very warm, the wires & contacts were VERY hot). Any ideas about the problems with the NiMh or NiCd? Could it be the drill and not the batteries? The hot batteries/wires occurred after minimal runtime, so I don't think its a matter of overdrawing the battery, but I'm just not sure. The vent holes on the drill are not blocked.

Power Tool Repair

I have an old Bosch electric drill (CSB 420E) which has started behaving strangely: Its speed has dropped greatly, and it sparks so much I could turn the lights off and still see what I'm doing. I suspect a fault in the armature or field coil, but they both look OK. Brushes seem ok as well. Any ideas? I'm reluctant to junk it because I am too mean to buy a new one.

Dremel Plus Drill Press?

Would it be Possible(practical) to substitute a Dremel for a drill in one of those presses where you add your own drill? (Which I can't seem to find the presses, that I'm talking about online. Although I know they exist.) Found one, and it seems to be used with a dremel. (I think.)

Drill press motor placement ?

I'm building a drill press out of an old jigsaw motor and was wondering if it would be too shaky to mount on the drilling arm. If so, how could I mount it elsewhere? Would pulleys be the way to go?
