Moving Ears

Hello,I was just wondering if anyone could help. I have an idea for something I want to build, however I just need a push in the right direction.I’m working on a costume with antenna ears. I could just make them static however I want to add a bit of movement. Basicially I want them to, when I tilt my head down, the ears flatten (think a cats ears when angry) and when I lean my head back, they point up. The rest of the time they stay in the middle.I want them to be automatic. I really hate triggers or controls, as soon as someone notices how you are operating it, the illusion is ruined. I also don’t want to use electronics (the sound of a motor).I am absolutely sure I can oull this off, however I’m not sure the best way of doing it. I was thinking fluid filled tubes, as the water exits one it enters the other. Or the mechanism in dolls so they sleep while lying down.Does anyone have other ideas or pointers?

What is wrong with my girlfriends ear?

Me and her went to go eat lunch/dinner at her dads. On the way there, she said her ear was hurting and it was red (hour: 1). (hour 2) now her ear was throbbing and she was basically crying when I touch it and it was starting to look like a burn. I was thinking that it was from her curling iron, but she said she didn't touch it. (hour 4) after lunch/dinner we go to her moms house to hang out and her ear is still throbbing and has a white burn like mark on her ear cartilage. (hour 4.5) she puts ice on it and still hurts, after about 10 minutes after the ice, it started to ooze out some green pus like discharge, yes from her cartilage. she doesn't have it pierced. it seriously looks like it could had been from a curling iron except for the discharge... so she takes some pain killers and tries to go to bed. (hour 5) me and her mom take her to go to the hospital to see what is going on when she it was hurting so bad she was literally crying.(hour 5.25 - 7) we wait in the lobby to be checked out by the doctor, in that time, she was in so much pain that she barely talked. and if we did, she didn't want to talk about her ear with the discharge still oozing out.(hour 7.5) doctor evaluated that its an infection of some sort but has never seen it, so he prescribes her some antibiotic pills and drops. the drops to be put directly onto the sore.(hour 15) in the morning she shows me her ear and it was kinda dried up, but still pretty liquidy. it looked the same for about the rest of the day. she said that it wasn't hurting as near as bad and i could actually touch it and not have her cry or wince in pain. What could this be? and how and why did it happen in less than 12 hours? could it be from the curling iron but just a weird reaction to heat? I will see if I can get some pictures from her to post. but this is what she said hopefully about the ones on her phone (i took some with her ipod) "I deleted them because they are gross."... understandable because they were... very...

Dvd player is a tad loud

I gots a question, I have this Panasonic X410 dvd player, it's a real nice unit for 1999, and makes a real nice big single disc cd player..but on my stereo when I play music, it keeps lighting up the peak indicator on my reciever, which probably isn't too good to do that often. I wanted to know if there was a way to "tune" this thing down a bit as far as the line level outputs, but there's not onscreen volume control that I can find. Also, I'm fairly pertubed as to why there's two sets of video rca outputs and two sets of the audio jacks, respectivly, set side beside each other. There's no specific labeling of their function other than just video and audio out, not video 2 or nothing and I don't remember any mentioning of in the manual a few years back when I still had it. This unit has a nice 10 bit video dac with a 24 bit audio decoder (96khz something), I really want to hear what the fibre optic on it sounds like, but hey I can't afford a $3,000 amplifier right now, does anyone know of any kind if "converter" or way I could install a fibre optic board I can get my hands on into my surround sound unit I have now. Ideas ideas, I guess I have spring fever eh?

Pre-historic Video Amplifier Antennas useless?!

I've been learning quite a bit about video amplifiers recently. And it's brought me to a question. When antennas were the source of video-signal, you would often hear horror stories of people having to get up off of their couch to adjust the "bunny ears", to get a clearer signal. I'm just confused. Why would they have to be adjusted? The signals, if my understanding is correct, is electrical signals sent through the air, and the signal would cover thousands of feet. It surely didn't matter if the antenna was all but a few inches from one spot or another. The signal should be able to hit it just the same no matter what, correct? If you are in a car, it's one thing - you're moving. But in a house, you're stationary. Any explanation?

Upside Down Heart Earrings

Hey guys! Just like to share something new I learned :) Obviously, it's a heart shape earring but what's interesting is how to create it and how to slide in the bead at the center of the heart. I had fun creating this cute thing from watching the video by Ross Barbera. I can't share the steps here as it's not my own, but if you like to find out how to do it you can watch it HERE. Cheers!

Any ideas on an in-ear white noise device to help stutterers/stammerers?

Hi, This is my first post. I don't know much about this kind of tech but am eager to learn.  I want to build a hidden/discrete wireless earpiece which can play a short burst of white noise (1-2 seconds) when a button is pressed (see below for an explanation of why on earth I want to do this). The button would need to be able to trigger the white noise from a range of around 1 metre so that the controller can be kept in my trouser pocket. There are earpieces around which play white noise (to help people sleep in noisy environments) but I want to be able to control whether or not the white noise is playing. I thought about using a wireless earpiece (e.g.) with bluetooth, however it seems like the maximum range for this would be around 40cm. Anyone know of alternatives?  WHY WOULD I WANT TO?! Individuals who stutter/stammer often experience blocks. It's not that you'll hear them repeating sounds or anything - their speech just totally freezes up. For reasons which aren't entirely clear, listening to white noise can help stutters who block to start talking. White noise can be played before trying to speak, disrupting our auditory feedback - resulting in less blocks. Some devices have made use of this, e.g. Edinburgh Masker (http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/kuster/edinburghmasker.html), but were ugly, bulky and didn't allow you to manually control when the white noise was playing. Other devices, like SpeechEasy make use of Delayed Auditory Feedback (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_fluency_device#Delayed_auditory_feedback) - which can help some people but is of no use if you aren't already making some kind of noise. Is this impossible?  Many thanks for anyone with ideas on this! Cheers Oli

is it possible to build a fairly cheap in ear system for live gigs?

I find it easier to deliver a good vocal performance when i can hear myself singing.although gigs generally provide monitors, i have and often use an in ear system when playing in my local church band and the difference is incomparable, for obvious reasons. the only problems is these systems are extremely costly. for now i am just wanting to play some acoustic gigs so a simple transmittor and in ear system would do the job.do you have any diagrams of any such devices?many thanks

How to remove a tiny shell from ear canal?

Okay, I know this is going to be weird, but my 4 year old daughter stuck a tiny shell in her ear canal about 3 weeks ago.  Its probably 5mm in diameter, flat snail shell.  It reminds me of a very small man hole cover.  We've seen several doctors, including a specialist, and we're just waiting to see if it will come closer to the outside before having to put her under general anesthesia to remove it.  So, my question is there any way to get it out without hurting her?  I figured the scientific minds here might know some way to remove it.  We've tried ear candles, flushing it with water, olive oil, ear drops, tweezers, even gluing a stick to it (yes really).  So, we've tried a lot of stuff with no luck.  I won't do anything harmful to my child and won't hold any one liable for suggestions.  There just has to be a physics based answer to removing this thing that we're missing!
