Hey everyone does anyone know any good ideas for making a portable ham radio transmitter and receiver that can fit inside an iPhone case (the cardboard case you buy them in)? It would be good if it was a kit, but it would be better if it can be made using a breadboard and other bits and pieces. Anyone have any ideas?

I am currently building an RC hovercraft, I plan to use a single 12 volt 2.1 amp hr lead acid battery to feed both the lift fan for the skirt and the power motor for the drive. However the fan for the skirt is 12v 0.3 amps. How can I reduce the feed to the required amperage with out affecting the other feed from the same battery that will power the drive

I want to cover a stairway. The motion detection camera that is in the library here is a very good start. I want to add the following functions. 1. long battery life 30 days min. 2.. Rotating photo storage. i.e. when the memory is filled up, the camera will overwrite the oldest photo. 3. Date and time stamp A unit like this could be left in place for a long period and only accessed if something has happened that need to be checked.

I am currently working on a project that requires energy harvesting ,so i decided to use electromagnetic induction for the purpose. However I can not decided how to design my magnet and coil combination. All i know is i want 2.6-3.3v and 26mA for round about 4 ns. The setup in brief required a movable permanent magnet and a stationary coil. The moment of the permanent magnetic is like a oscillating pendulum just for once but with a sleed of say about 15km per hours. So can you please suggest me how should i start designing. thank you

You set two voltage values v(low) and v(med). There's a connection on the board V(stat). S is the voltage from the battery.V(stat) = 0 if S is higher than v(med) => State 1V(stat) = 3.3V if S is between V(low) and V(med) => State 2V(stat) = alternates 0 and 3.3V between 0V and V(low) => State 3So I was thinking (of displaying this via 2 LEDs (green and amber))State 1 - green on, amber offState 2 - green off, amber onState 3 - alternating between green and amber.I was hoping to combine the LEDs into one bicolour LED. If anyone has any cunning plans or improvements they'd be appreciated.. whatever it end up with though it mustnt use up too much battery power.

I want to start a few projects using a Arduino board and know what I'm going to do. The problem is I do not understand some concepts and parts with electronics. I was woundering if anyone could recomend a decent Electronics Book to help me grasp concepts and what specific parts do. Try to keep it in the $20 range because I have a gift card to amazon. Hey, I've just started getting into electronics, it interests me alot. I have a pretty good understanding of each individual component, but don't have a good one of how they work together, so do any of you know of a good 'circuit cookbook' that has easy circuits with explanations? That would be great. Also, what components should I always have around if I'm just tinkering? I have a bunch of resistors (1 ohm to 1M ohm) and a bunch of capacitors (.22 UF to 2200 UF).

Hey guys, ive been a big fan of the site for a long time but have only just signed up. I just wondered if anyone could recommend to me some good books/guides on basic electronics and circuit building. Iv always been interested in the way electronic devices work and after viewing some cool looking instructables on here decided i want to try and learn about how to make them. So here goes, I am trying to figure out how to make basic sound generating machines. Preferably generating a sound that can be modified with a potentiometer or something of the sort. The principle is simple, these will be for messing around, possibly, if the result is good, using in some random recordings of mine, so most of the machines will have a jack out plug. Anyhow I was wondering, what, in a circuit, actually makes sound, what is the base of all sound generating electronic devices (synth, analog stuff, beepers) what actually creates the wave, the current that is sent to the speakers? Have I just answered my own question by saying current? Is it just the electrical current, and putting random resistors, capacitators, potentiometers and stuff changes the sound that is generated? Any help is more than welcome! and if anything good comes of it, I'll post some sound clips!

Ive been making tons of projects lately and i keep asking myself the same question. What is going on in those little components i solder on. Say i was to take resistors, capacitors, transistors microchips etc... and snap them in two, what would I see? What is it that allows people to program microchips, Is it essentially typing code and sending it into a natural resource? What allow wire to carry information? Does anyone else ask themselves these mind boggling questions? Or better yet does anyone have answer?

Under the right circumstance in a synchrotron for example, electrons accelerated to very high speeds can be made to give off photons. Apparently to preserve the laws of conservation of momentum and conservation of energy. i assume this means the photons in this case have mass to allow the electron to obey these laws so does this mean: 1. Electrons contain the photons 2. Electrons generate the photons 3. Photons are spontaneously generated by some other effect 4. The electrons are dragging photons along with them. Why do i have a feeling I am not going to understand the answer, if I could I probably wouldn't have asked the question!

Is there something that exists that can wirelessly short-circuit electronics? I haven't found anything on Google. I'm pretty sure i read something about a guy making something called an F-Ray that did this, but that was in Tesla's lifetime I think. In short I want to build something that can over-voltage or short circuit electronic devices/machines. I don't care if it ruins them or temporarily disables them.

I need to level a 32' long machine. Lengthwise is easy, but along it's width is a pain. I have to check in about 8 places along the machine. This takes awhile to do with only one precision level. Since these levels are about $120 each it is not realistic to buy eight. I need to save time and effort. I was thinking of trying to build a bunch of electronic levels to place in their designated areas so I can find the "level" of each area without moving a level to it. Any ideas?

One more forum post and then I swear I'll take a break!!! I would like to build a sort of a "secret box," where access would be had through a sort of electronic "key." A few specifications: (1) the box would be permanently out of doors, and (2) the "key" would be simple enough that I could give interested parties the schematics and tell them to make one. I'm thinking a USB connection would be a natural, but I'm not an electronics person, so I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks!!!!!

I have a spst relay(operating voltage-12v) using for switching the solenoid valve(24VDC and 0.5Amp) which connected through 24 V battery. relay is again connected to the transistor BJT NPN . So please suggest me that which transistor is most suitable.

Hi, i'm a bit new to electronics. I was wondering if its possible to turn on the flow of current by another electrical signal. Yes, i know about transistors and relays but these switches turn off as soon as the second current is stopped, how to make this change in switch permanent, i'll be precise, i'm working on a laser alarm system, and it works fine, but the thing is that when i block the laser, sure the buzzer goes off, but when the obstruction is moved, the buzzer turns off, how can this be kept on until turned off manually by a switch. i know it must be quite simple but i dont know, please help thanks

Okay. I'm going to make an electromagnet to hold the spring in place while it's compressed, and then as the power turns off, the spring will release and shoot the catapult. However, I'm not an engineer-- I'm making this for tech class. How should I design the catapult so that this will work as a triggering mechanism? In what way should I set up the spring and electromagnet relative to each other? Thanks in advance.

OK so I made some throwies, had a lot of fun with them and now want to learn more. (My 89 yold mother put some on her cane! It is almost a Rosarch test to see what people think of to do with them.) I am very intrigued with all of the things that you can do with led's. HOWEVER, I really don't know anything about electronics. Where should I look, what should I do to learn some basics? I have forgotten everything I (n)ever knew about electricity. I would like to be able to read and understand a simple circuit diagram. I would like to be able to figure out simple circuits and projects on my own. Any suggestions? GLO

An idea has occurred to me about how PC boards are currently made. The normal process now is a destructive one, where unwanted copper is etched away. What about figuring a way to electroplate the traces onto a substrate? Various toys and model parts are made of plastic, and yet have been electroplated with a cheap form of chrome. Why not apply that to PC boards? I'm thinking that a photographically negative mask could be used in a photo-sensitive process to apply the conductive surface to a heat resistant substrate, and then the copper traces could be electroplated on. Anyone have any thoughts on this, primarily at a hobbyist level? **note - cross posted in burning questions.

OK, so a few years ago my brother got an r/c something or another for his birthday, one day i was screwin' around with it and to my suprise, when i pressed a certain button on the romote, all the lights in the room went out. when i released the button they came back on. I tried it in a few rooms, and it usually had the same effect. i'm guessing there is some sort of combination of capcitors/risistors or something that did this. The r/c toy has long since been lost and i can't recall what it was, and i'm more in to mechanical stuff then electrical stuff, so if some one with some knowledge could help me out, i want to build another one for messing with people at a halloween party.

I do some work with the FIRST Robotics kids and it is amazing to see what they are doing. Big problem though seems to be a general lack of electrical test equipment. They don't really have the money to buy oscilloscopes, function generators, CAN and I2C analyzers. So I got one of the M3 Discovery boards from STmicro and it is really cool. It has four 5MS A/Ds on it plus a whole host of other features(CAN, I2C, Serial etc.). http://www.st.com/web/en/catalog/tools/PF254044 So it got me thinking. Why couldn't we turn one of these chips into an "All-In-One" electrical toolkit and keep it cheap($50-$60, BOM ~$20). It would be fairly easy to turnkey. I threw together some simple specs, what do people think. 1) Will supply general use drivers so a user can use the app or write their own. 2) Oscilloscope a. Two Channel i. 2MHZ of Analog Bandwidth per channel ii. 10MS/s per channel iii. Trigger on rising edge, falling edge, on-command, run-stop actions iv. Datalogging for extended time periods at up to 10hz per channel (data stored directly to console), maybe higher rate will just have to see 3) Serial – 2 Ports a. I am making a project and i want a way to make two devices that one of them has an LED on it and when the other devices goes out of a certain range 30m lets say the LED either comes on or goes of and i dont want them to be connected.It's for a school project and i wanted it to be small so I could attach them on to bicycles let's say and then if my brother goes 50m ahead of me the LED will come on/go off on his device so that he is aware of the distance between us I know nothing about electronics at the moment, this might put you off helping that's okay i hope that makes sense to somebody and that someone has an idea. thanks

I was taking apart this toy car called a formula fueler from hot wheels and found these to parts that look like leds but on a board. They each have a led thing and two wires on has red and black wires while the other has purple and black wires. The red and black one has thes letters on it "LED REV:03 B4048-0030050" and the one with purple and black has "PHO-TR REV:00 C4331-003-5000". What are these and what are they used for? Should i keep them for future projects?

I'm interested in taking on a few of the projects in the electronics category, particularly the high voltage compilation. Obviously though, this is some pretty dangerous and complicated stuff (maybe just to me), so anyway, I was wondering if there were any books, web pages or guides with basic starting out info that might help me understand what those guides are talking about? You probably should assume I know nothing about electronics, because its more or less true.
