Epic Costumes Winners

Thanks to everyone who entered in the Halloween Epic Costumes Contest! The Epic Costumes category has a legacy of some of the most complex and involved projects on our site. The results are always mind-blowing, and this year was no exception. Like previous years, we had no shortage of amazing, EPIC entries. I am very pleased to report that there was more than several heated debates around the lab when selecting finalists, and it was just short of total bedlam while choosing the winners. First Prize Costume Armor with Wonderflex by volpin The Wonderflex Armor won because it had the best blend of process, presentation, and execution. The project gives you a behind the scenes look at how this professional grade costume was made, almost daring you to try and recreate the painstaking details based on the comprehensive instructions. This custom made costume really defined what we were looking for in an Epic Costume entry, and your votes reflected that. Also, the composition of the photographs really sold the hard work that went into this epic costume. Second Prize   Cthulhu by alexthemoviegeek Life-sized Space Marine Armor by thorssoli Bowser's Castle Costume by Mr. Noack These costumes represented everything we hope for in an epic costume; over-the- top DIY awesomesauce! These costumes used several very clever techniques in construction, and the finished projects really show us the artistry and craftsmanship that the authors put into their work. Third Prize Mr.Freeze Costume by rmorrow4 Alien Xenomorph by Mostlymade Bowser Costume by CassiniCloset Orchard Spider by BrooklynAliens Narnia Minotaur by ellwoodjoe The time and dedication put into these creations is evident, and each have their own complexities and challenges that were masterfully overcome. It’s hard to deny that each of these costumes are indeed “epic” and would win the nod of approval from costumes aficionado’s the world over. Congratulations to all the finalists and a big thank you to everyone that entered, you should feel proud of your amazing, EPIC creation. Remember, costumes aren’t just for Halloween, we have an entire channel dedicated to costumes, so you can dress up and have fun all year. If you didn’t win this time around I hope there was something that has inspired you to make another epic costume, next year’s Epic Costumes is open from right now until this time next year! NEW DESIGN - EPIC

I am starting a new project, I want to tweak some of my old design, design some new systems, and reverse engineer some other stuff to create a whole new system that is effective and powerful. I am planning on making this a full turret, so don't worry about size at all, only effectiveness. Let me know if you guys have any ideas of systems to contribute for the plan (see my previous post for details on 'systems').

Epic Science Fair Ideas? Answered

I am not a big fan of doing a science fair project, but I would love to do something big and fun with minimal actual work. Does anyone have an idea?

Question by aarobro56   |  last reply

Epic Science Fair Project?

Okay, Okay I won't do the Digital Taste project anymore. But I need help with a new one. I am in grade 10, but i have a good understanding of arduino and programming. What projects could I do? I really only want answers about electronics or programming, as those are some of my areas of skill. So what could I do? I'm looking for innovations possibly, or really cool things remotely related to science. If possible, it should cost under $100 to make a basic working prototype, and I already have basic arduino electronic parts.Thanks.

Amazing LEGO Crawler Town

A solar array, grandstands, aircraft runway, elevator, and an assortment of support vehicles, this epic LEGO creation has it all! Flickr user DeGobbi has created a rolling city out of LEGO blocks and what must have been months of hard work. There's even a back-story to go along with the epic build: "Crawler town roams the barren wastes of a post steam-punk world after cataclysmic climate change do to excessive coal use. Several such cities exist but Crawler town is the most popular due to the Aero 500 hydrogen fuel cell Air races that are held." Yup, looks like he's thought of everything with this build, there's even a place to grab a beer! There are plenty of close ups of the entire project and all the details, you can check them out here.

Good place to get really good LEDs?

I have recently discovered that CREE has released some new XHP class LEDs awhile ago, and compared the the XML line that I have been a fan of, these ones seem to blow those out of the water. However, they are still somewhat $$$, although not too much. I would like to get my grubby evil hands on a few of the XHP70s, XHP50's, and XHP35s, but the "good" ones are out of stock on mouser and digikey. On amazon there are a few listings but they are overpriced and they do not list the binning or CRI of them. Any other reputable LED sellers? I want to see how well these would work to retrofit into either an existing el-cheapo XM-L flashlight as an upgrade, or a homemade lantern/portable floodlight. I basically want 80% or 90% CRI range and Neutral / warm white, preferably neutral. As you see I am not overly picky, but I want them for good usable indoor light quality. I have been impressed by the XML light output, but not the 6000K 70% CRI crap quality light like the ones I have produce. These LEDs are roughly twice as bright for the same physical size, and about ~30-50% more efficient. What I do want, however, is the highest binning available in it's class (aka the best ones.) Not for any particular reason (other than maybe bragging rights lol), but because I just can't bring myself to order comparatively less efficient ones with low/medium CRIs for pretty much the same basic price when I know damn good and well there are better ones for sale for only pennies more. Feels like I get cheated. :( Also if I order from mouser or digikey, I guess that means I would need to mount them to a star PCB myself, that might be a challenge. Since I do not have solder paste or a proper reflow oven, I prefer to not have to do that.

Fabulous Instructable, lousy result...

Recently, I baked a cake that I had long awaited making. Just the right time. Just the right pan. Just the right season for pecans. It was a sure hit. Everything was beautiful, everything fell into place. The pictures were fabulous. The cake was gorgeous. This was going to be made in many homes. My tutorial was divine and thorough. So came the time to cut the cake. My parents, my son, daughter-in-law and husband were present. I was so proud! Everyone took a slice and began chewing. And chewing. They each had that 'Uh, yeah, it's, uhh, yeah." look on their faces. My son said "Oh, it's not that bad, after you chew it for a while." This was an epic disaster. This cake was so dry, I could have gagged. There were suggestions of soaking it in coffee. Covering it with whipped topping. I could have died. Needless to say, after tasting the crime that was this cake, there was no way it was going up on Instructables. What a waste of time and food product. Thank goodness the chickens loved it. Has anyone else ever experience such when trying a new recipe? Sign me, NOT serving this cake anytime soon.

Show Me Your Epic Fail Projects!

Any good maker will tell you to accept and embrace the process of iteration. And a natural product of that iterative process is failure. You learn a lot by trying something, being less-than-successful, and then attempting it again. It's the act of picking yourself up and trying again that helps dissolve the fear associated with failure. I'm interested to see your most epic failures! Share photos, videos, and stories of your fails from project builds: Slumping, cracking, burned, melted, misshapen… it's all part of the learning process. Can't wait to see how you messed up. :)

Would anyone be able to make a loot chest/locker from borderlands the game?

Borderlands has very interesting loot chest/lockers, and I think it would be a great idea to try and build some of them. Like the way they open up are amazing. It would be a great idea to make as a actual storage unit. I will be doing some research myself, but I am a noob at this. so it would be easier if someone with experience would be able to build one.

Halloween Contests Clarification

Hey Instructables Community! I am in charge of moderating the contest entries for the Halloween Contests; this is to just clarify some things in case you are wondering why you were rejected from a contest. -------------------------- You cannot enter the same Instructable into both the Epic and Easy Costume Contests.  If you are not sure which one to enter, go ahead and enter both and I'll make the call. You cannot enter the same Instructable into both the Decorations and Props Contest.  Props relate to costumes while decorations are simply decorations. Any Halloween Photo Instructable qualifies for the Halloween Photo Contest. Food can also qualify as a Decoration. If you have a Costume with an awesome Prop, it would be best to post them in different Instructables so you can enter each in its corresponding contest.   And don't forget, you can enter up to 3 contests, so read through the contests descriptions when you go to publish and enter any and all it qualifies for! You can enter each contest as many times as you want! The Contests: Epic - Costumes that take more than a day to make if you were to work on it that whole time, we're looking for something that is EPIC! Take a look at the current entries for an idea of what we're talking about.  (If you are rejected from Epic it doesn't mean you don't have an awesome costume, it just means we're looking for something more EPIC.) Easy - Costumes that take about a day or less to make. Props - Something that is part of a costume (meaning, worn or held), including, but not limited to: facepaint/makeup, hairstyles/wigs, swords/sheilds, and masks. Decoration - Something that you would not carry around including lawn and home decor. Photo - Any Halloween Photo Instructable Food - Anything that is food that relates to Halloween Any Questions?   Please leave a comment here or PM me, I'm happy to help out :)

Okay, so I got an ipod touch from my friend for thirty bucks, 3rd gen, with a broken touchscreen.  About two weeks later, (I'm not sure how exactly) the logic board got fried and now all it does is rapidly overheat.  So, the screen still looks fine.  I don't know exactly how many votes  I'm going to get, but I would sure like to have some suggestions, any input would be great.  I will post pictures of the un-damaged ipod when I get ahold of my mom's camera. New Theory For A Pump Action Gun

The black is the gun body, the red is the ramrod, the yellow is the pump, the green are the wheels, the blue could be either string or fishing line. Theoreticly i think that this gun can hold as much power as you can pump if you use high quality fishing line and you have built a strong gun body. I think that this could be a very powerful shotgun if built right. i myself have tried to do this many times through but have never sucseded. I would like to see someone give a shot at this one. I looked around extinsivly and could find no gun like this. I give a thousand congrates to whoever sucsedes in building this. Also if someone does happen to build it I would like partial credit and instructions. I would like to thank all of you for taking you time to read this through.

Dirtmobile?

So I got this awesome idea to make a trike with a snowmobile donor. Use the snowmobiles motor and track for the rear "wheel", and a gokart style front end, with 2 wheels, spindles, maybe suspension, etc.  Nothing too big, maybe 400cc or less. 2 stroke of course =D. I am proficient in fabricating, welding, and have a full auto shop worth of tools, so the actual construction shouldn't be a problem. However, I need to know some things about the snowmobile drive train.  Would the track itself work on dirt, light mud, light puddles (2-4 inches deep), and maybe some sand? If not, are there any tracks available for such terrain? Do most snow mobiles have the engine mounted infront of seat, below, or behind? This thing looks wicked cool in my mind.  OH, heres a good way to put it. Like a snowbike (Dirt bike with tracks in back), with two front wheels. Or a honda ATC with tracks flipped rear/front.

Pride and Prejudice.............and Zombies?

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is the pinnacle of Jane Austen's work, a multilayered comedy about a class controlled society, and slaying zombies. This book is really quite amazing, it is nearly impossible to distinguish Jane Austens writing, from that from quirk books. People having read the "real " Pride and Prejudice tell me that the book is hilarious, and "really kind of weird, " but if, like me you just picked up the book and decided to read it, you will find and epic rivaling "Z war" in hilarity and zombie mayhem. Please, but and read this book! And after you do, give it a rating here, 1 to 10.(1=epic fail, 10= MADE OF WIN) And don't forget to purchase the sequel on September 15th, Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters.
