Corrupted Excel File? Answered

Hi there, We have an Excel file that has become corrupted and even when trying to repair itself an error is produced.

Linking to Excel files

I've been a lurker for a while now and I am currently writing my first Instructable.  I'd like to be able to include an Excel spreadsheet which I developed to help design the item I am writing about.  I have uploaded the file but it seems that the site treats it like a picture.  Is there a way to include a link to a file you have uploaded so that the reader can download it and use it?  I could always upload it to a file sharing site or Google Docs and link to it there but I feel there must be a way to do it withing the Instructables site.  You'd have a similar need for things like CAD drawings or code files.

One Excel 2010 user corrupts spreadsheets Answered

Hey guys, hoping for some insight on an issue I am facing: We have one user that is running Excel 2010. When she opens a spreadsheet, works on it, then saves it, it opens with errors the next time anyone tries to use it. It gives an "Unreadable content error message" and asks if you want to repair the file. It seems to only happen if she saves it as .xlsx, saving it as .xls doesn't seem to cause the same problem. Exact Error: "Excel found unreadable content in filename.xls. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes." She is running Office 2010 Home & Business on Windows 7 Pro x64 I have tried repairing Office 2010, uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2010, making sure it has the latest updates and service packs. Any insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

*.xlsx files won't open? Answered

Problem: The only issue is with Excel *.xlsx documents. A friend somehow managed to associate the .xlsx files with Word, so of course it obviously fails to open with Word. All other Excel files... templates, older *.xls files and such open fine by double-clicking on them. Attempted fixes: 1)I have gone into and set *.xlsx documents to be associated with the Excel program, however the icon doesn't change to the normal Excel 2011 icon (the icon looks like a blank sheet w/ the normal Excel icon in the middle instead of off to the left side) 2)I have run the Office Repair to no avail 3)I have completely uninstalled, then reinstalled the entire Office suite too. 4)Finally, System Restore didn't work What happens when I try to open an .xlsx doc? The hourglass comes up like it's thinking about it for maybe 2 seconds, then just goes away and nothing happens. I wish I could say what happened or what changed to cause the problem, but my friend has no idea. By the way, I can open Excel, go to file-->open--> and open an .xlsx document that way. Or just drag the file into the opened Excel program and it works fine. After everything I've tried, I imagine there is just something registered incorrectly in the registry, but am unable to find out what exactly. Thank you in advance for your time...

Upload Fault

I can not upload excel files to my instructible. I have tried 20 or more times, closed the browser and repeated, tried another browser, renamed the files but nothing seems to work. I have had this problem before and sometimes after about 2 hours of frustration, the files suddenly upload correctly. This is extremely annoying. Can anything be done to fix this fault ?

The file may be corrupted, located on a server that is not responding, or read only.

Hello, I have Win 7 and Excel 2007. When I try to open my .xls files I always get the same error message: The file may be corrupted, located on a server that is not responding, or read only. I`m sure that all my files are on the C disk and they are not read only…just week ago I was able to open it. My friend adviced me to make a scan disk and check my computer for viruses, but it didn`t help in the issue. Can you give me some tips how could I solve this problem?

Predict the Future! ...of data sets

I just made an excel spreadsheet, that predicts the future of data sets. My main reason was because I wanted to have a way to predict my Instructable views, but this could be used for a lot more. This is not completely accurate (as it uses the best fitting line of the data) so don't believe it completely. To use it, just change the first two numbers (at least) to values you want to see grow. Portable Query Machine for Excel files

I was wondering if there would be a way to make a "query machine" that would be portable.  It would need a display and digit pad and allow me to load an excel sheet to the device and then search it using the key pad.  I didn't know if this would be feasible or not so some input would be valuable.  I need something like an RF Scanner that would be used in a ware house except without the scanner part.  Just manually type in a number and a location appears on the screen.

Excellent Forum, Glad I Joined

I just recently joined as a Pro member, but I've received a lot out of Instructables over the years. The last "prank" instructable that I participated in were those cell phone zappers. I don't know what kind of experience or success rate other members had with this, but I just wanted to die laughing at times when in stores, doctors offices, etc..., and someone would either call or receive a call, and 'ye olde zapper' went into action, and I'd estimate a good 90+% of the time, the call was terminated very shortly because of a dropped [or loss of] signal. My unit was rigged  up in a book, so it was really drew no attention.

LEDs keep on taking over. Excellent.

It's no secret that we love using LEDs for our projects. They sip power and are fantastically tiny. You can even get an introduction to how they work with just an LED and a coin battery. If you haven't used one yet, make it a new year's resolution to make one light up this year. If you want to complete any resolutions, that'll be one of the easiest.Yesterday's announcement of the Macbook Air in San Francisco pushes the LEDs further. This isn't the first laptop to have it, but it's a dramatic display of how far the tech has come and how far it needs to go. LEDs aren't perfect for every use, but they hopefully will be someday.According to this article some of the current goals are for better whites, deep-UV, and quantum cryptography. All of which sound pretty tasty. But what about you? What do you want from LEDs that you don't see just yet?

excel problem. averaging results of index match?

Hi all (again) new problem semi related to previous. (check my profile for the ones with NFL in the title) now the problem is i want to get the average score for each team in each season. my current formula only gets the first result of the index/match even if i use some of the tricks i've googled. the data is in the format of YearVisitingTeam(W/L/D)Score@HomeTeam(W/L/D)Score          ie   201249ersW41@2012PatriotsL34 i use a formula to strip "Year(Visiting/Home)Team(W/L/D)" so i' left with Score on either side of the "@" (that was a [redacted] pain) using any and all of the tricks i know i get either 0, 27 or an error of some sort. the only way i've been sorta able to do this is by getting the first home win, first home loss, first away win, first away loss BUT that's only 4 of 16 games each season and not a good representation of the average points for the team in a season. the sheet in question is AVG point - Reg Season the source data is 78 - current regular season (2012 season starts @ row 3152)

VBA Code Needed for a certain formula in Excel?

I have an excel sheet, and I am trying to bring some sort of automation in to that sheet (since I use it quite often) with the help of macros. The fact is that I am really new to macros and VBA programming language, so I need a little help in writing the code to find the 10th percentile (the formula for it is PERCENTILE(array, 0.1) for each bin value (50, 100, 150). If you see the picture attached, the wanted percentile values are in Q, the bins for which I want to find the 10th percentile value, are given in Column M (50,100,150) and the main data on which the 10 percentile value will be based is given in Column D. By Using the data given in D and filtering out a certain bin width in column E (Example: Filtering bin width 50 or 100), we could find the Percentile value against each of the bin value given in Column N. As said earlier I am new to VBA code, so any help will be appreciated in order to find the percentile values for each bin. the link to the original spread sheet is given below:

Problems with Excel formula? (semi-related to previous questions)

Hi all, i've got a problem with a formula in my excel spreadsheet that i'm using to get the scores for NFL teams 1978 - Current i have the data ok but the problem is with matching the the specific games. i've CONCATENATED the data to provide unique data points also it's in two columns (Home & Visitor) in the format of YearTeamW/L/DScore     eg. 2012TitansW35 in the VERY unlikely event (and i've check a random selection) that the team has 2 wins at home with the same score this could cause an error. here is the formula i'm using: (version ~8000zzzzz lol) (all one formula, just added a line break to make it fit) =(IF(MATCH($A$3&$B$2&"w*",Home_Team,0)=MATCH($A$3&$C$2&"l*",Visitor,0),INDEX(Visitor,MATCH($A$3&$C$2&"l*",Visitor,0)) ,IF(MATCH($A$3&$B$2&"d*",Home_Team,0)=MATCH($A$3&$C$2&"d*",Visitor,0),INDEX(Visitor,MATCH($A$3&$C$2&"d*",Visitor,0))))) Here's a link to the folder with the spreadsheet. (NFL Stuf (test).xlsx) Sheet: Past Season Summary - what is says. eventually where the formula is going. Sheet: nfl2011lines - 92   - the data (actually 1978 - 2012 but i named it before i added all the data) Sheet: TESTING - my "sandbox" so i don't [Censored] the main sheets Semi-Related Question1 Semi-Related Question2

Need to loop a VBA - Macros Code in Excel 2010?

Hello everyone I need to apply a loop to the following code such that the constant (50) in ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=IF(C[-7]=50,C[-8],"""")" is replaced by a variable that has the values depending on column M as shown in the picture. Furthermore I also want my code to progress downwards and fill all the empty places, depending on the adjacent row value in column n. Do I need to switch over to absolute reference? The code is as under: Sub Percentile() ' ' Percentile Macro ' '     ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Rough Work"     Range("L2").Select     ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=IF(C[-7]=50,C[-8],"""")"     Range("L2").Select     Selection.AutoFill Destination:=Range("L2:L124252")     Range("L2:L124252").Select     Columns("L:L").Select     Selection.Copy     Columns("AG:AG").Select     Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteValues, Operation:=xlNone, SkipBlanks _         :=False, Transpose:=False     Columns("Q:Q").Select     Application.CutCopyMode = False     Selection.ClearContents     Range("Q1").Select     ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Percentile 10%"     Range("Q2").Select     ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=PERCENTILE(C[16],0.1)"     Columns("R:U").Select     Selection.ClearContents     Range("R1").Select     ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Percentile 25%"     Range("S1").Select     ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Percentile 50%"     Range("T1").Select     ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Percentile 75%"     Range("U1").Select     ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Percentile 90%"     Range("Q2").Select     ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=PERCENTILE(C[16],0.1)"     Range("R2").Select     ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=PERCENTILE(C[15],0.25)"     Range("S2").Select     ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=PERCENTILE(C[14],0.5)"     Range("T2").Select     ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=PERCENTILE(C[13],0.75)"     Range("U2").Select     ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=PERCENTILE(C[12],0.9)"     Range("U3").Select End Sub You could find the Main Excel sheet here:

How can i make the code for an excel macro be universal and not only work for one file?

So i am writing a macro to graph a large set of data. After finishing writing the macro it worked fine on its original fie in this case 234 here is one of the original sets of key data. ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(1).XValues = "='234'!$A$27:$A$1490" It specifies the 234 as the file to retrieve the data. I assumed that after replacing the 234 in the line of code above with a command like sheetname. like so below. ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(1).XValues = "='sheetname'!$A$27:$A$1490" Who ever can successfully answer will receive a patch. Feel free to ask questions because what i wrote above is a slight bit vauge.

VBA Code for finding the 10th percentile value for a certain bin Range?

Hello everyone I hope that you all are fine. I have an excel sheet, and I am trying to bring some sort of automation in to that sheet (since I use it quite often) with the help of macros. The fact is that I am really new to macros and VBA programming language, so I need a little help in writing the code to find the 10th percentile for each bin value (50, 100, 150). If you see the picture attached, the wanted percentile values are in Q, the bins for which I want to find the 10th percentile value, are given in Column M and the main data on which the 10 percentile value will be based is given in Column D. As said earlier I am new to VBA code, so any help will be appreciated in order to find the percentile values for each bin. I can give the excel sheet as well if someone want to try hand on it, and let's me know the email address. Additional Note: (The spread sheet is sorted out with respect to column E, is Ascending order (50, 100, 150) and the number of count for each bin width is given in column O, so you can just find the range of each bin by adding the count for each bin i.e range for first bin (50) is from 1 to 1+8542, similarly the range for the second bin (100) is given by 1+8542 to 1+8542+6862. I will be very grateful if someone spares some time for me. Kind Regards raishikoh

What excellent examples in CAD of low drag coefficient pickup trucks exist that are available on the internet?

Vehicles have been designed to minimize the aerodynamic drag with notable success. Production candidate vehicles (such as Aptera, Twike, and Honda Insight) achieving drag coefficients of 0.25 down to 0.11. Solar Challenge vehicles have reached 0.07. Nose cone and fastback upper and sealed or faired lower body designs can achieve significant reductions in drag, and are worth attention. I am attempting to optimize a design for pickup trucks and cross-over utility (CUV) vehicles that are based on the same basic chassis design. Can anyone contribute designs, examples, or sources of information on optimized pickup design? BTW, I am simultaneously searching for a safe design that has the vehicle center of gravity at or below the axle height, as it should be to prevent roll-over accidents. Risk of injury and death are significantly higher in pickup trucks and CUVs than cars, and now pickups and CUVs account for more than 50% of new vehicle sales. This tragic fact needs to be reversed with safer design.
