I've been trying forever to get my FTP server up and running properly, to start, this is what I have:Filezilla running as a service, port 21 and also some randomly selected listening ports have been opened on modem/router, all the user accounts have been set up properly, and I can confirm that it works from LAN side of the network. I have a dynamic ip so I had to go the no-ip.com way, but it seems to work pretty good giving me a hostname.myftp.org address.I've had 4-5 people try it that I want to have access to it, and only one of them can actually get on, but he was using a different ftp client that I had never heard of, the other people were trying in mac os x or with filezilla's client software. I want to pull my hair out because I've googled over and over, and I'm following the directions, as retardedly easy as they are, and everything should just work correctly, I have filezilla setup to be a passive server and to retreive an external ip address from a url, and they have a default site that seems to also work okay. I'm just wondering if this is the problem, because I'm also running the no-ip dns software side by side? I don't think it matters though.Oh yeah, and I also have it setup for custom port ranges 5000-5100, so unless I plan on having even 80 or more users at a time, that should be a wide enough range. Also, don't use external ip for local network connections is checked.It seems so simplistic to me, and being able to access it locally fine, and seeing at least one other person get on it made me happy, but is there maybe something wrong in the configuration on their end(s)??Thank you guys if you can help me hit this dumb problem in the head.

Does any one know how to hack into the ftp server of a web site so you can download files and stuff?

I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in a instructable on how to setup ftp for free. Please leave suggestions in the comments if there are enough I will probably make the instructable.

How, if at all possible, can I fix this?  I have a flash drive, but it only transfers at 640 KBs per second, as apposed to 3000+ KBs for a network cable.  It takes forever to transfer my games to my new hard drive and I am about to go crazy.

I am a musician and wanted to put up my albums on torrent sites.  I use Vuze and can create a .torrent but have no idea how to use the files that are on my ftp server.   Can you guys help me out?

Well I decided to join cause I was looking for a solution of a problem I have at my job. I work in a datacenter, and frequently I have to pull delicate cables, which have to run through many corners, sometimes they got stuck between sharp metal pieces on top of the racks, or even the doors. Not only that, but also the times that get to pull them from one place to the other (sometimes cables of 60 or 80 meters. You have to be also carefull on not pulling so much. So I was thinking in to invent something to put in many places as auxiliars that let run the cable in every corner. Many Ideas but I am not in use very frequently with the inventive that your experience have. But I think I discovered what I like most in life. INVENT THINGS.!!!! Hi there, We manufacture CAN bus data loggers for use in e.g. cars, trucks etc.The logger records data to an SD card. When the logger is in range of a WiFi/Cellular hotspot, it will start pushing the data to a specified server. The files will be ½-20 MB in size and need to be transferred frequently (e.g. every few seconds). A user can have 100-300 loggers deployed, all sending data to the server simultaneously. Today, we handle this using the FTP protocol. It’s been a simple solution that most users understand.However, we fear it’s not future proof and we’d like to look into other options (e.g. HTTP, MQTT) - in particular also to enable easy transfers to e.g. Amazon/Google cloud servers.A few questions that we’d like input on:What do you believe would be the best protocol for the case described above? Do you have any examples of use cases, APIs, open source code etc. in such applications? If we switch from FTP to another protocol, is there a way to keep it simple for our “less techy” users that do not use e.g. Amazon/Google servers, but just their own PCs?Thanks a ton for your inputs! I want to know what form I would use to edit a document on my website and have it save on my website in browser. Not using an FTP client. Like how when you comment something on YouTube, it actually stays as a comment on their side of the server. I want this for my personal web server so I can access documents on multiple computers that aren't my computers so I don't have to log in or download anything to others' computers.

I am new to Apple computers, I just got an older system off of ebay for testing purposes and so that I can learn how to use them.  (I want to go into IT for a living, so I will need to learn how to use them.) I need a little help getting started with my first project.  I have made a working program for what I want to do in Windows as a batch file (which I then compiled into an .exe).  For a company that I am starting, people often need to send me large files, and I want to give them a way to do this.  I have two FTP servers (one in the cloud, and one at home that my parents make me shut down every night).  Since these files are large enough that it takes awhile to download them from my cloud server, my script automatically selects which server to use based on the current time.  It then prompts the user to drag and drop their file into the dos window to select the files they wish to upload.  After that, it creates an FTP script which is then executed using the ftp /s command.  This program works great. I would like to get this program working on my mac as well (I realize that I probably can't use the same script, I will have to change it).  I considered using a bash script, but it seems that you would have to start the script from terminal (it can't just be executed by clicking on it like in windows).  I've also looked at automator, but as far as I can see it doesn't even have the ability to upload to FTP. At this point, I just want to make an easy way for people to upload to a specific FTP server without having to enter usernames, passwords, IP addresses/ urls, etc.  I don't even care if it automatically switches between servers like my other script... that is a bonus.  To any mac programmers out there, if you were going to do this; where would you start?  (Stick with bash, applescript, automator, another programming language, etc.) Thanks!

I have an old Treo 680, Palm TX, and Blackberry Curve 8310 that I'm trying to figure out what to do with. I wanted to turn the TX into a portable FTP/WebDAV/Samba/Whatever server, but there don't appear to be any good programs available for that, and I don't think it can connect to my school's WPA2-Enterprise network anyway. Does anyone have any ideas for what I could do with them?

I downloded this program and in the "readme'' folder it says: Install Instructions Upload the files to your server in the exact same structure as you see in the sourcefiles.zip. This is important! MAKE SURE FOLDER "TEMP" HAS 777 AS PERMISSION To do this just navigate to that folder with your favorite ftp program, select its properties (often right mouse menu) and set it to 777. If you dont do this the images wont be written and the save button wont work! BUT!!!! if you have MOD_SECURITY enabled dont set your permissions to 777 but keep it at 755 the default value. If you dont do this the final end result wont be saved eventhough a "save file" box is shown! That's all there is to it.

So if you google "Home networking" you will come up with a ton of articles about home networking "basics", well I have reached the point where basic is just not enough. I have ..... 9 or 10 computers....and I want to do something to expand my network even more (not really in size but in awsomeness), my house is wired with cat 5e and has wireless. I guess im at the medium level of networking knowledge, I dont know how to program unless its HTML but I definatley know my way around a computer. My network consists of three desktops, one attached to an LCD TV as a media center, one is just a workstation and the other soon will be in the gameroom as a media center. Hello everyone, As the title suggests I am trying to host my own website by using the device combo mentioned in the title. So far I managed to create a DNS hostname free from www.dyndns.com mostly because of my Dynamic IP address. I also managed to get the router to update the IP in dynds' database. The problem is that whenever I type in the hostname in the addressbar the router's login page shows up instead of the website (and I do understand why this is). The website itself is stored on the flash drive connected to the router via USB. I think that by typing ftp://my-hostname.dyndns.org/path-to-the-html-file-on-the-flashdrive  I can view the website but this is not very easy to remember so I doubt any person wanting to visit my site is going to remember the path. Is there a way to make my website show up when typing the hostname instead of the router's login page? And if not can I atleast, in some way, redirect people to the html file?

Software security issues are often obvious to a second pair of eyes. I just posted the PHP scripts for my personal contact homepage as an instructable:Simple PHP personal contact homepage (web3.0!)Can you hack it? Preferably a copy on your local machine and not on my actual server... I deleted all my administration files and classes prior to making this post, just in case.I have two primary concerns:1. General PHP injection attacks. Proper handling and escaping of form data.2. The admin interface has a sessions based authentication mechanism. Login is compared to a MD5 hash of the password, then a session is created with an MD5 hash of the user's IP address. Each subsequent page load compares the authenticated session IP with the user's IP address (again, an MD5 of both). The goal is to prevent remote session stealing related flaws by tying the session to an (unknown...) IP address. Obviously if you have access to the local machine this is all moot, but there is little I can do about that. If an intruder were to get around the session authentication, they would be able to upload files just about anywhere on my server using the admin upload interface. This is a bit of a concern...I think in light of this, I'm going to add an option to limit the web admin interface to one IP address. My IP is fairly static, and if it changes, simply upload a new config file by ftp.

Now that I'm back at school, I've been assigned with the task of creating an official school iPhone app. I was told that it needed to be easy to use, and contain information that students would need, or like to see. Currently the school has an intranet, where you can access the Daily Notices (teachers can post stuff etc), email, 'Our Files' (web FTP interface for documents), school calendar. It used to have your class timetables and attendance records, but it no longer works because we switched to a new system and it'll take some time to connect the new database to the website. What I want to do is create an app which goes further than the intranet, and has features that students want. Because it's a long weekend, I can't do any sort of survey at school to find out what people want, so I'll ask you! If you were at a high school, what information would you want quickly? I just put a new Forum up on my server. I want to see what it's breaking point is and also would find it handy to get ANY feedback from it, I know there will be a couple things astrew on my forum, but for the most part it's your average SMF forum, with a little bit of work done to it to set up the settings to my likings and changed the theme.I know there are a malicious few that will stumble across my forum link (not necessarily members on this website), but I welcome the testing of my server's security, as I also need to know of any leaks.Also, aside from the testing aspect of my forum, I welcome new users, as I would like to have a user-base of more than 5-6 people, just makes things more exciting ya-kno? I've had a little experience with the security system setup from my last post, but I moved, and I'm going to try something different. Should I use Ubuntu Desktop or Ubuntu Server for webcam monitoring? I'm a Windows user who would like to eventually learn how to use Linux as well as i can use Windows. But in the meantime, I'm about to set up webcam monitoring in my house. I've got a few USB webcams, and one LinkSys wireless webcam. I'll obtain the monitoring software from a third party. I need an operating system that can handle processing four video streams as well as running the security software. (I'm also going to use remote admin software so that I can have a "headless" setup.) I'm currently running WinXP Pro (Corporate) on a machine with an A.M.D. Athlon rated at 1.02 Ghz with 2GB RAM. A friend of mine recommended that I use Ubuntu Linux, which I think is a great idea. The problem is that I don't know if I should use the Desktop or Server edition of Ubuntu. Also, since the rest of my network (and family members) uses Windows, the remote admin software I use either has to be cross-platform, or be Linux compatible with a web-interface. So should I use Ubuntu Server or Ubuntu Desktop? Or should I stick with Windows? Also, as far as the webcam security software is concerned, I need software that handles multiple streams and has options for motion detection, record on event, notification through email, and a web interface (HTTP server). Also, FTP options would be nice to have, but are not required. Any suggestions for this? (Win?/*nix)

My father's store has eight computers at the moment and management has been a bit, well, annoying. (I'm his IT guy at this point.) When the store only had 3 computer, managing them was as simple as scheduling defrags and virus scans, periodically fixing hardware issues and network problems, and reinstalling XP every few years. They had LogMeIn, which was nice, and helped get the computers back and running quickly. A few years later wiith eight computers, though, It's just too much. The biggest problem I'm facing now is the lack of automation among the different computers software-wise, especially when downloading new software. When installing AVG, I have to do it eight times. Updating LogMeIn? EIGHT FRIGGIN TIMES! I noticed that my entire town's school system's computer' system's IT people's method to manage their thousands of computers was a great approach, (don't mind the apostrophe's,) and I hope to try to apply similar management methods to the store. The thing that I'd really like to do is to have all of the computers, essentially,  be identical. This means, for example, that all user accounts work on all computers, and the hard drives' contents would be identical, other than specific drivers for the different computers. So, where do I start? (I wouldn't mind doing some light programing for that, or, em, scripting would be the term, actually.) I assume I need a server of some sort, probably a logon/PXE/FTP windows server, right? Or would it be simpler if I do the whole thing using Linux? Do I need a specialty program? Should an actual IT guy be hired at this point? Please help.

I'm looking for a component that I don't know the name of because I have very little electronics experience and asking google these types of things seems to get me everywhere except where I need to be. What I think I need is something that will allow me to switch between four different data lines simultaneously but default to four other lines. For example: Input 1 has four lines. Input 2 has four lines. There is one output with four lines.Real World Problem:I bought a digital picture frame for super cheap and didn't get a chance to research it. It is powered by a USB wall transformer. When the picture frame is receiving power from the wall, it displays the images. When it's plugged into the computer, it goes into update mode and mounts a drive that you can copy images to.What I Want Now:To be able to flip a switch and have it change from USB wall transformer to USB PC. So, from the above: input 1 = USB wall power, input 2 = PC USB, output = picture frame. The switch box would have a 2x USB Mini-A inputs and one USB Type A output.What I Want Later:I imagine it's trivial(?!) to change the physical switch out for a 555/556 timer and two potentiometers so that I can have set a Frequency and Duration of changing from the default wall power to the PC's USB power.What I Get:A picture frame that every x minutes switches to the PC for y minutes so that I can write an application to look for a newly mounted volume called KODAKFRAME (just an example) and create images for it of things like the latest news and weather or maybe even just change out the pictures for variety.My Real Motives:I'm an IT guy and would love to use this as an auxiliary display for info that isn't critically time sensitive such a free disk space, recently received FTP files, etc.Thanks in advance,3Toe
