My first steps into steampunk

I've just taken my first steps into steampunk with a small display and I thought I'd share some pics. I made all the clothes and there is an LED in the contraption behind the blue window. I was making a pair of Victorian style boots for Sybil, but ran out of time, so she has a pair if Barbie shoes for now (good thing Barbie has ridiculously small feet for her size) The male doll is 5 1/2 inches tall. I'll finish the boots at a later time, but I had to finish the display to a point today as the miniature group I belong to has a display at a local model show this weekend (anyone in Newcastle, Australia - come to the Our Town Model Show :-)

I don't know how to make an instructable

So this isn't actually a "bug," but i really need help! This is my first instructable, and i have no idea how to make it! I don't understand.. so i write a step and then add another step, but what shows up in step two is exactly what i wrote for step one. Am i doing somthing wrong? No one else in my family can figure it out either. Also, how do i put pictures to each step? I don't know how to do any of this. I'd like to post one for the halloween challenge, but i don't know how. Thanks!

Layout changes not mentioned in Rachel's update

There were two fairly substantial (from the user's perspective) changes that Rachel forgot to mention in her Site Update post. First, by moving the search box and button up to the masthead, they have also eliminated the old-style "graphical search" interface completely.  It doesn't even show up as an alternative when a Google-driven search is made.  This has already led to two user complaints (here and here). Could the old-style interfce at least be put back on the search results page? UPDATE 17 Aug 2010: The "graphical search" link is back on the search-results page. Second, the interface when you first read an Instructable has been cleaned up substantially. All the steps, with photos and hover-text, are still there, but instead of a truncated table of contents (only the first ten steps), now the full intro and first step are shown immediately. It'll take a bit of getting use to for the old-timers, but I think it's a better interface for new users. Thanks to Rachel for getting these updates out, and especially for answering (pun intended) some of the requests from the community!

Can't delete steps

I'm working on updating some of my instructables, (https://www.instructables.com/id/Solar-Cockroach-20/) (https://www.instructables.com/id/Solar-USB-Charger-20-21/) and one of the things I'm doing is removing some of the steps. In Chrome, in the editor I click the X to delete a step, and confirm that I am sure, and it pulls up a "Confirm Navigation" dialogue from Chrome which says "You have pending form responses. These form responses will not be saved if you leave this page. Are you sure you want to leave this page?" and I can click stay or leave. If I stay it will pull up a dialogue from Instructables saying "We hit an unexpected Problem. If this problem persists, please contact us about what happened." So here we are. The same thing happens in Safari, but the first dialogue is "From 'docs.google.com" instead of "Confirm Navigation" I sent a message to service@instructables.com a month ago and have heard nothing back. Does anyone know what's going on?

The All Steps dilemma...

So the reason i became a member of ibles was to get allsteps, only after signing up did i discover the amazing community we have here !I visited the site fairly frequently before signing up and i just clicked through the steps which was highly frustrating.Have i got this right ?No membership = NO allstepsfree membership = allsteps if you click the box on the instructablePro membership = Allways allstepsif that is right then speaking from experience, i have to disagree, i think the free-membership level should get allsteps preference, that way they can become a member, easily view the whole instructable and then when they realize how utterly awesome instructables is they can sign up for pro.If i had arrived at ibles today and signed up for a free account because i liked it, i would have seen the pro option and thought "ill see what they have to offer first" and then when i tried to look at an instructable i had to continually click allsteps or even worse click through all the steps, i fear i may have lost instructables in the depths of my bookmarks folder. Now i love instructable's i have many friends and lots of fun, and i totally agree with the pro accounts. I just worry that without allsteps preference, the free-members will be dissuaded to stick around and eventually sign up to pro..p.s. im not great at writing long things so just try to get the gist of what im saying :)p.p.s. pic unrelated..

My Newest Instructable Insists That it Will Only View All Steps at Once

I made a new step-by-step in instructable, and it seems to insist that it all belongs on one page. View all steps and secondary pictures

I am sure that I'm not the only one with these feelings about the changes in the site "permissions" concerning guests viewing instructables. I have been looking at this site (which I love, by the way), but something that's really, well, stuck in my craw, is the fact that guests cannot view all steps or view other pictures. What purpose does this accomplish? Are the admins trying to bolster the number of members? Just because a viewer doesn't have an account does not mean that he shouldn't be allowed to view all the pictures. I am also having trouble understanding why the admins don't allow guests to view all steps. The site hasn't always been like this. Not too long ago anyone could use most of the understandable viewing features. An excerpt from the Terms and Condidtions of Use (from section 7, subsection F, first sentence): " Instructables, in its sole and absolute discretion, may preserve Content and may also disclose Content if required to do so by law or judicial or governmental mandate or as reasonably determined useful by us to protect the rights, property or personal safety of Instructables, Instructables users and the public." (go look at the last three words again) I don't know about anyone else, but I think that not seeing all the pictures detracts from the educational viewing experience. If anyone has a good perspective on this, I'd love to hear why the site is like this.

"View All Steps" not working in Firefox

Has anyone else been unable to get "View All Steps" to work recently in firefox? After logging in, I click on the View All Steps button on a given instructable and the page refreshes, but when it finishes, I'm still looking at only the first step. Even if I manually append "?ALLSTEPS" to the end of the url, when the page loads, "?ALLSTEPS" is cleared from the url and, again, only the first step. I'm using the latest version of firefox and have even tried disabling all my add-ons but to no avail. The functionality works as it should in IE8, but I prefer to use firefox.

Steps in woodworking project Burning/enamel/Staining? Answered

Alright! So I'm starting a new personal project to create a gift for someone. I want to create a heart shaped home-made picture frame. I want to cut out the heart, have it stained, wood-burn their photos onto the heart, and chisel lettering and enamel that and give the whole thing a finish. Individually I can do each of those tasks, though I'm at a loss as to how to tackle this and which steps to take first. What process should I take for these steps? Should I burn first, or should I stain first? Should I chisel/carve before or after staining? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Embedding videos in Step by Step Instructable.

Less than a month ago, I wrote my first instructable, and was able to embed a 10 sec. youtube video into my instructable. Since then, I have not been able to embed such videos because the embed button is no longer there.    The instructions for step-by-step tell you how to do it, but the embed button is not there.  Where did it go and when can I expect it back?  I think these little video's add something to my Instructable and I miss them.

No provision on my instructable to add a step!

I have posted a new instructable, but when I went into edit mode, to add a new step, there is no provision for doing so: Here's my instructable: https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Quickly-Field-Estimate-the-Weight-of-a-Stan/ I tried using Internet Explorer 8, Opera 12, and Mozilla Firefox 23, but to no avail. This is the first time this has ever happened with one of my instructables. And please, don't hesitate to be verbose with your answer, as others on this forum have posted the same problem, and the posted answers are not helpful at all. For example, others have answered "... click the add step button..." when the post indicated there was no add step button, or "... maybe the instructable was not set up as a step-by-step instructable" and simply left the problem still hanging there.  Hey guys, these are not complete, problem resolving answers. And problem repetition (with lack of suitable answers) does clutter up our help section. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, shastalore

End of World One Step Closer. Or Not.

A vast physics experiment - the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) - reaches a key milestone this weekend ahead of an official start-up on 10 September.Engineers had previously brought a beam of protons - tiny, sub-atomic particles - to the "doorstep" of the LHC.On 9 August, protons will be piped through LHC magnets for the first time. The most powerful physics experiment ever built, the LHC will re-create the conditions present in the Universe just after the Big Bang. This last sentence is the one that's caused a little panic amongst certain groups of the population - they are convinced that the experiment will create miniature black holes which will fall through the LHC towards the centre of the Earth, where they will orbit around, gradually consuing the planet from beneath our feet. When the collider is commissioned, the beams will cross paths at allotted points along the tunnel, smashing into one another with cataclysmic force. My God, have these people never seen Ghostbusters??Scientists hope to see new particles in the debris of these collisions, revealing fundamental new insights into the nature of the cosmos and how it came into being. Now that is seriously cool (well, hot, actually) - to be able to recreate what the whole of reality looked like mere femtoseconds after it started...BBC storyCritics have previously raised concerns that the production of weird hypothetical particles called strangelets in the LHC could trigger the mass conversion of nuclei in ordinary atoms into more strange matter - transforming the Earth into a hot, dead lump.Earlier BBC storyAmusingly paranoid storyAnalog Magazine article

ALL STEPS BUG - IMPORTANT TO FIX

After the recent site updates, I noticed that the view all steps link on top is replaced by a tiny push button next to the download button. Problem: I have not set the default view all steps option in my profile yet whenever I visit any ible, it shows all steps. Consequences of the problem: The ible takes time to load, eats bandwidth, many options like vote, stats are not functional unless the ible fully loaded Steps to reproduce: Open your browser Visit any ible, make sure you don't have allsteps set in your profile. If you see all steps enabled in ible, disable and view normal ible. Now open another tab in your browser and view a different ible. Notice that both ibles look normal (not all steps) Now come back tp first ible and press allsteps button, let the ible fully load. Now switch to other tab and fresh the page. You will notice that the allsteps button is already pressed and ibles loads all steps. Now open any ible and you will notice it is opened allsteps Possible cause of the problem: Before the site update, a ALLSTEPS querystring value was used in the ible URL to maintain the state of allstep. After the update it appears like cookie or session is used to persist state of allsteps button which is not unique and therefore allstep state of one ible is reflected in another. Environment OS: Windows 7 Home premium Browsers: IE9 and FF 20.01 I noticed this does not happen in Chrome 27.0 as the button relies on the ALLSTEPS querystring

Differences between the Step-by-Step and All-Steps webpages

I recently made changes to the first step in my Instructable and I've noticed that over the past few hours the page showing all of the steps has been updated while the page showing only the first step has not.  By not updating I mean that the content update has not taken affect, the number of views is less than is shown on the other page, new comments haven't been added, the number of followers and favorites shown is less, etc.. Only the first page appears to be affected, though.  So, everything looks correct for: https://www.instructables.com/id/Awesome-Console-Cable-Bracelet/?ALLSTEPS and https://www.instructables.com/id/Awesome-Console-Cable-Bracelet/step2/Preparing-the-RJ-45-connector/ but not for: https://www.instructables.com/id/Awesome-Console-Cable-Bracelet/#step1 Some other info: - occurs whether logged in or not - reproduced on Chrome 31.0.1650.63 m, Firefox 13.0, and Opera 12.16 (All running on Windows 7) - doesn't appear to be due to browser caching Let me know if there is any other info I can provide. Thanks!

Intro and Step #1 on same page = weird?

I guess this isn't a bug, as it works as planned, but I do find it personally annoying that the Intro and Step 1 are on the same page, but there are separate thumbnails at the top for the respective sections.   When you click on the step 1 thumbnail, it just jumps down. I like clicking through the thumbnails as a way to see the overview of the project, and I always have to skip that step #1 box. I would personally put the intro + materials on the first page, then the start of the procedure (Step 1) on the next etc.  I don't consider the materials to be a "step".  Maybe it's just my OCD acting up.  Anyone else?

Unable to edit image-free steps of Instructable.

I had great difficulty finishing off my latest Instructable. It's 8 steps, and I had all 8 written, but only images on seven of them. When I tried to edit the final step and add an image, the editing page froze.  When I clicked on the step with no image, I got the "saving" spinner, which spun for a few minutes, and then it went back to the first step (not the intro). I tried re-ordering the steps, moving the image-free step to step seven temporarily, but it still froze when I clicked on the image-free step. I eventually had to delete the step completely (using the re-ordering tools) and re-create it from scratch. Bug experienced on up-to-date Firefox and XP and on slightly out-of-date Linux and FF.

Joule Thief Toroid not helping to step up, Why? Answered

Hey fellas..I am having problems with joule thieves especially with the toroid part.... First time I wound my Ferrite Core and the joule thief ran smoothly... But recently I had to unwind it to try other wires which didn't work.. So i again wound up the toroid just like the first time when it used to work but unfortunately this time it didn't work... I have checked everything and found that the only problem is that the toroid is not helping to step up the voltage.. When i applied 9V across it, the LED glowed but for 1.5V it didn't. So there is a problem with the toroid.. But what it is and why is it happening I don't know..I mean for the same core and same style of winding once it worked and now it doesn't, Why ?? Can anyone help me ??

What kind of stepper motor should I get? - for 3 axis cnc desktop mill

I am currently working on building my first desktop CNC mill, I plan on it being 3 axis and the spindle being a dremel tool. I am searching for stepper motors that will work for my project and would like some suggestions as to what kind/which ones I should buy. I have seen ones from 96-200 steps/rev, does this make a large difference which end of the spectrum I use? I figure the more steps, the more accurate it can be but for my basic machine would 96 step/rev be sufficient? aka what kind of accuracy can I expect from 96steps/rev? Should I get bipolar or unipolar? Does it matter if the controller connects through USB or parallel port? is there even a difference Thank you for your time

Intro step text disappears from published instructables

A few days after publishing an instructable I checked back to find the text from the intro step was missing. There is no way that I deleted the text by accident, as I did not edit the ible between it being fine and the text vanishing. The pictures seem to be unaffected. This first happened after publishing this ible in December and it just happened again with this one today. In both cases I replaced the text, which so far hasn't had any problems. What's going on? I often put important information in the intro step and having it disappear is pretty inconvenient. For anyone else who runs into this problem I was able to find the text using the history tab when editing.

Glitch: Can't publish?

When I add the body of text for each step, hit save and go to the next step, it carries over my text from the first step. When I delete that and add the text for my next step, save and go back to check the first page, it's the second step's text there on the first step page. Gah! Finally, after 4 different days/attempts at it, I thought 'this instructable is simple enough, why not just cram the steps onto the first page and let the fine people scroll through my photos and figure it out on their own' but when I did that and hit 'publish' it gave me a warning that said "Before publishing your instructable you must add a description'. Wah! Frustrating!  So I thought I outsmarted it, but it still won in the end.

What was your first EVER gun that you made?

Heh my first ever attempt at a gun was 2 grey rods and a ton of orange connectors connecting the grey rods making a barrel. then i strapped on a rubberband for power put a grey rod in the barrel pulled on it at the other end along with the rubberband and Walah! My first ever Knex gun. My next design was the same thing except with a firing pin. Then after that a trigger then a very premature handle. The funny thing is that my first gun was probably the most powerful out of all my guns...pretty much ever. Then i stumbled upon Instructables finding first the amazing killerk gun then my guns took a step forward and now i am creating crossbows gatling guns sniper rifles shotguns and all of those types of guns. But my simple pull back gun was what started it all. Whew! wrote a novel there well i just wanted to know what the best builders out theres first guns Please Comment

Two bugs with Instructables layout update -- Step 1 is inescapable

In a recent post, I mentioned that the presentation of Instructables had changed slightly.  Instead of the first ten steps in a "table of contents", now you see the Intro and Step 1 in full.  It turns out that there are two bugs associated with this change. First, Step 1 seems to  always show up, whether you've viewing the Intro, or viewing Step 17. UPDATE 17 Aug 2010:  This has been fixed. Second, when you click on the links for either the Intro or Step 1,  you see the same thing, those two steps together in full. UPDATE 17 Aug 2010:  Actually, if you click on the Step 1 icon in this case, the page jump-scrolls to the start of the Step 1 text.  This is a feature, not a bug. There's no problem with "View All Steps" (for paid users).  That behaves the same way it always has. UPDATE 17 Aug 2010:  "View All Steps" now uses jump-scrolling.  If you click on any of the step icons at the top of the I'ble, your browser will scroll to the start of that step on the same page, rather than loading a new page.    This is a feature, not a bug.

I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion if i should first transform the 120 VAC to 24 VAC and then convert the 24 VAC to 24 VDC? or if there is a 120 VAC to 24 VDC with a normal wall plug for sale.
